Why Live Performances Can Feel Flat and How to Fix It
In this episode of Intentional Musicianship, Jeff Price explores why strong musicianship does not always translate into a compelling live performance. Today's audiences are conditioned by film, television, and social media. Their attention is constantly guided through camera angles, movement, and intentional storytelling. When they attend a live performance, they bring those same expectations with them. The challenge is that most musicians are trained to focus on accuracy and execution, but not on directing the audience's experience. This episode introduces a simple but powerful shift. If live performance does not have cameras, then the performer must become the camera. Through a real world example of a live music video producer and a conversation with a developing band, we break down the gap between thinking about performance and actually rehearsing it. We also provide practical tools you can apply immediately: Describe your performance visually, not just musically Map your performance like a storyboard Use audience perspective through a simple "fishbowl" exercise Identify where attention should be directed at all times If the audience cannot see what matters, they will not fully experience what you are playing. This episode challenges you to move beyond playing correctly and begin shaping what the audience sees, feels, and remembers. Why Good Musicians and Educators Protect Their Ears
As musicians and educators, we spend our lives surrounded by sound, but we do not always stop to think about how that sound affects us over time. In this episode of Intentional Musicianship, Jeff Price reflects on lessons learned from decades of performing and teaching, including his years with the United States Army, and how hearing health became part of professional responsibility. This conversation is not about fear. It is about being intentional so musicians can continue creating, teaching, and listening for a lifetime. Jeff shares practical strategies for hearing protection, leadership habits for educators, and why building a relationship with an audiologist is just as important as maintaining your instrument. Money, Fundraising, and Finishing the Experience
Money is part of the musical ecosystem, whether we like it or not. But how and when musicians ask for support matters more than we often realize. In this episode of Intentional Musicianship, Jeff Price reflects on an online holiday concert that felt less like a performance and more like an unnamed telethon, and why that disconnect matters. From there, he explores how expectations shape trust, why audiences do not mind being asked when intent is clear, and how musicians can design endings that feel respectful instead of awkward. Using the familiar "exit through the gift shop" metaphor, this episode looks at how nonprofit ensembles, educational programs, and independent musicians can create space for audiences to linger, reflect, and choose how they want to engage. The focus is not on selling, but on finishing the experience well. Topics include breach of expectation, clarity in nonprofit fundraising, environmental asks for working musicians, and why optional support works best when it feels earned. This is not a how to fundraise episode. It is a conversation about alignment, honesty, and choosing approaches that fit who you are, your mission, and the community you serve. Enjoy the Journey: Gratitude for the Moment You're In
In this episode of Intentional Musicianship, Jeff Price steps back from techniques, tools, and optimization to focus on something deeper: gratitude for the moment you are in. Drawing on personal perspective, shared musical experiences, and the realities of life on and off the stage, this episode explores how musicians and audiences alike often rush past moments that later become the most meaningful. From rehearsals and performances to hallway conversations and shared silence, these are the moments that shape us. Jeff reflects on how perspective changes over time, why music so often marks life's biggest transitions, and how presence, not perfection, is what creates lasting impact. He also reminds us that audiences choose to be there, that performances do not need to be flawless to matter, and that gratitude builds connection. This episode is an invitation to slow down, notice who you are sharing the moment with, and recognize that the journey itself is worth appreciating right now, not later. #IntentionalMusicianship #EnjoyTheJourney #Gratitude #MusicianMindset #PresenceOverPerfection #MusicAndMeaning #PerformanceReflection #AudienceConnection #SharedExperience #MusicAsCommunity #MusicianLife #LivePerformance #MusicEducation #ArtAndAwareness #BePresent Welcome to Intentional Musicianship! What wins Auditions? Raising your Average
Why do so many talented musicians walk into auditions hoping for a perfect day instead of relying on consistent preparation? In this episode of Intentional Musicianship,, Jeff Price reframes what it actually means to win an audition. The answer isn't perfection, luck, or peaking at the right moment. It's raising your average. Building on Episodes 38 and 39, this conversation explores what happens after you decide to take the audition. Jeff explains why professionals don't just aim to be their best on audition day. They aim to be solid every day. When your average is strong, confidence replaces fear, and auditions stop feeling personal. You'll hear personal stories from the field, practical mindset shifts, and a clear redefinition of the audition as what it really is: an interview. Whether you're preparing for an orchestral audition, a competition, or simply trying to show up more confidently in performance, this episode offers a grounded, realistic perspective on preparation that actually works. The takeaway is simple. Success doesn't come from one perfect moment. It comes from being prepared enough, often enough. #IntentionalMusicianship #WhatWinsAuditions #RaisingYourAverage #MusicianMindset #AuditionPrep #PerformancePractice #QuietConfidence #MusicianLife #PreparationOverPerfection #AuditionIsAnInterview #ProfessionalMusician #MusicCareers #PerformanceConfidence #PracticeSmart #ConsistencyWins Welcome to Intentional Musicianship! Should You Take This Audition?
In this episode of Intentional Musicianship, Jeff steps back from audition preparation and looks instead at the decision to audition in the first place. Rather than focusing on how to win an audition, this episode explores what an audition actually delivers once you do. Using real examples drawn from current orchestral job postings on audition aggregator sites like Musical Chairs, Jeff examines how opportunities that appear similar on the surface can represent very different lives once you read the fine print. Auditions may feel like an extension of school, but they are not academic exercises. They are gateways to work, and work shapes lifestyle, priorities, and daily reality. This is a concise, real-world perspective, not an exhaustive guide. The goal is to build awareness, encourage discernment, and support better decision-making before you invest time, money, and energy into an opportunity you may ultimately be the one who has to live with. #IntentionalMusicianship #Auditions #MusicCareers #OrchestralJobs #MusicianLife #CareerDiscernment #PortfolioCareer #MusicEducation #ProfessionalMusician #DecisionMaking #AuditionProcess Welcome to Intentional Musicianship! What is This Music Degree For?
In this episode of Intentional Musicianship, Jeff Price takes a thoughtful, personal look at school and graduate school as investments, not just financially, but in terms of time, opportunity, flexibility, and long-term life impact. Rather than telling anyone what to do, this episode invites listeners to ask two essential questions before committing to another program: Why am I doing this right now? So what is this degree actually expected to return? This episode is about thinking critically, investing wisely, and owning your decisions People mentioned in the podcast: A Degree Is Not the Career. Reframing the Thoughts That Steal Joy
In this episode of Intentional Musicianship, Jeff Price Jeff Price explores what happens after a performance, when the music has ended, the applause has faded, and the internal conversation begins. Drawing from a recent studio recital experience, Jeff reflects on how joy can slip away, not because the performance failed, but because of the thoughts that quietly surface afterward. Comparison, imagined judgment, and premature self-evaluation often replace the confidence, poise, and generosity that were present while sharing the music. This episode examines the mindset shift that occurs once we leave the stage and why timing matters when it comes to reflection and growth. Jeff discusses the difference between healthy evaluation and self-talk that undermines joy, why audiences experience performances differently than performers do, and how receiving gratitude is part of professional maturity. Rather than offering formulas or prescriptions, this conversation invites performers and educators to reframe post-performance thinking, honoring the act of sharing first and then preparing intentionally for what comes next. Intentional Musicianship exists to help musicians and educators create better live performances by examining everything that surrounds the music, from mindset and preparation to communication and audience experience. Collaboration is Not a Gimmick
In this episode of Intentional Musicianship, Jeff Price reflects on a series of live performance experiences — from a surprisingly effective Halloween concert to holiday programs, world music showcases, studio recitals, and Winter Gala performances — and uncovers a unifying insight: Collaboration is not a gimmick. It's how music communicates. Jeff explores how contrast, collaboration, and thoughtful programming help audiences listen more deeply and connect more authentically. You'll hear why concerts that look and sound the same can unintentionally disengage listeners, even when performed well, and how intentional design allows musicians to do less on stage by doing more work up front. Whether you're a performer, educator, programmer, or producer, this episode reframes collaboration as an act of care — for both the audience and the musicians — and offers practical insight into how contrast builds meaning, transparency builds trust, and programming becomes storytelling. #IntentionalMusicianship #colaboartionIsNotAGimmick #MusicianMindset #MusicEducation #LivePerformance #ConcertDesign #AudienceEngagement #Stagecraft #StorytellingThroughMusic #CollaborativeMusic #MusicProgramming #PerformancePractice #BandDirectorLife #OrchestraLife #JazzEducation #StudioRecitals #WorldMusic #HolidayConcerts #Choirconcerts #MusicalCommunication #BreakingTheFourthWall #PerformWithPurpose #MusicTeachers #ArtsEducation #OnStage Welcome to Intentional Musicianship! What Makes a Concert Truly Unforgettable?
In this episode of Intentional Musicianship, Jeff Price asks a simple but powerful question: What makes a concert truly unforgettable? Inspired by a recent faculty recital titled Jeff Siegfried and Friends, Jeff reflects on how laughter, storytelling, pacing, and genuine connection transformed an already excellent performance into something memorable. We'll explore why audiences remember moments, not measures; feelings, not fingerings, and how musicians can intentionally shape concerts that feel welcoming, warm, and deeply human. Together, we'll look at how small choices on stage, variety, dialogue, natural pacing, collaboration, create the kind of experience people talk about long after the final note fades Mentioned in the podcast: Jeff Siegfried West Virginia University College of Creative Arts and Media #IntentionalMusicianship #AudienceConnection #LivePerformance #MusicianMindset #PerformancePractice #StagePresence #StorytellingInMusic #ConcertDesign #MusicalExpression #BandDirector #OrchestraLife #JazzEducation #MusicEducation #MusicPodcast #ArtsEducation #MakeThemFeel #HostingNotPerforming #UnforgettableConcerts #friendsonstage Welcome to Intentional Musicianship! Short, Sharp, and Brilliant: Lessons from the Canadian Brass
In this episode of Intentional Musicianship Jeff Price reflects on an unforgettable evening with the world-renowned Canadian Brass at the Robinson Grand Perfroming Arts Center in Clarksburg, West Virginia, a performance that showed what happens when mastery meets personality. This was epic. I was impressed how their legacy has been part of all the music I have perfromed in groups through the years. I mean what band, or group has not performed one of their publications. From impeccably tight playing and short, engaging pieces to clever humor, staging variety, and even a playful merchandise twist (yes, branded socks! I didnt talk about the voluminous publishing platform!!!!!), the group turned a concert into a community event. Jeff unpacks how their pacing, show flow, and approachable humor built instant trust with the audience — and how local educators and ensembles can adapt these same strategies for their own performances. Listeners will discover how clarity, pacing, and intentional stagecraft can transform a concert from technically correct to emotionally unforgettable. Goldilocks and the Three Musicians: A Fable for Performers
Once upon a time, a listener named Goldilocks went out looking for the perfect concert. She didn't know exactly what she wanted—but she knew she'd feel it when it happened. First, she found a group that was technically perfect, but emotionally cold. Then, a performer who was all charm and chaos. Finally, a group that got it just right—not flawless, but real, warm, and unforgettable. In this story-meets-real-life episode of Intentional Musicianship, Jeff Price shares a whimsical fable followed by three very real performances. He dives into what separates a one-time invitation from a repeat gig and how musicians can move beyond being "good enough" into being unmissable. Fearless Performances: Pre-Mortem Analysis for Musicians
Hello there fellow musicians! 🎵 Ever feel like you're walking around with a cloud over your head, worried about all the things that could go wrong during a performance? Today, we're borrowing a tool from the business world called a pre-mortem analysis. It's all about brainstorming and storyboarding through your shows to identify potential issues before they happen. This way, you can plan better, reduce stage anxiety, boost your confidence, and connect more deeply with your audience. This episode is extra special because it was a live podcast experiment with my producer, Eric, co-owner of Red House Productions. Heidi wanted to help me grow a bit so, we decided to go off the cuff on a Saturday afternoon to see how this one take style of podcast would work. Ideas from the episode: Identify potential performance issues early using a pre-mortem analysis. Brainstorm solutions for possible stage mishaps to boost confidence. Create contingency plans for technical and environmental disruptions. Embrace mistakes as part of the live performance experience. Visualize the entire performance to anticipate and mitigate problems. Use real-life examples to humanize and learn from performance blunders. Adapt and stay flexible to handle unexpected challenges on stage. Practice stage presence and audience engagement techniques. Role-play potential disruptions during rehearsals to build resilience. Share your pre-mortem plans with peers for feedback and improvement. #StageAnxiety #PerformanceConfidence #MusicianMindset #FearlessPerforming #PreMortemAnalysis #StagePreparedness #AudienceConnection, #PerformancePlanning #MusicianWellbeing #LiveMusicSuccess #ConfidenceOnStage #OvercomingStageFear #PerformanceTips #MusicianTips #IntentionalMusicianship Folks mentioned in the podcast: Red House Productions Welcome to Intentional Musicianship!!!! Your Network Makes the Dream Work
Today's episode is all about networking and how important it is to grow in this area. We will explore 7 key concepts in the context of what I discovered when I went to a local music Expo. The show may sound like an infomercial, but it's not—it's all about the stories and connections made at this very special local event. Getting to the stage takes a lot of personal work and effort. Consequently, it takes a lot of support. In the beginning, each of us was probably supported by a special family member and friends. Maybe a local church or a place where you performed regularly, like a community music program. Of course, we had some support from some awesome teachers. And we've developed relationships with friends. As we went to school, we made more friends and colleagues and met more teachers. These relationships start to connect like a big spider web. It makes our world become linked, and it also makes it a very small world. Key Concepts: Resource Building Reputation Enhancement Collaboration Opportunities Support System Professional Development Visibility Legacy Building One of the best parts about being a musician is the people you meet along the way. It doesn't matter if you're a music educator at a local high school or a soloist on tour; it's important to take advantage of those networks because they allow us to amplify our access, inspire others, collaborate, grow, and resonate with new opportunities long into the future. Navigating Audience Expectations and Preferences
In this episode, we breakdown a recent study commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, it was revealed that 76% of adults would be more likely to attend an orchestral concert if there were modernizations to the concert experience. With shorter concerts, more matinee performances, and more interactive elements like 'meet-and-greets' and social media engagement topping the list, it's clear that both new and seasoned audiences are craving a more accessible and engaging live music environment. As musicians aiming for intentional performance, understanding these evolving audience preferences can provide a roadmap for connecting more deeply with our listeners and growing a more engaged fanbase. The Power of Eye Contact in Musical Performance, Breaking the Fourth Wall to Deepen Audience Engagement
The episode emphasizes the power of eye contact in performance. Jeff explores how eye contact can break the fourth wall between the performer and the audience. It contrasts the norms of ensemble culture, where musicians typically focus on their music or instruments, with the potential for deeper audience engagement through mindful eye contact. It also addresses common objections like the distraction of bright stage lights and personal comfort. Key Points 1. Importance of Eye Contact: Engages the audience and communicates that they matter. 2. Current Norms vs New Possibilities: Many musicians focus inwardly or on their fellow performers. There's an opportunity for deeper engagement by focusing outward toward the audience. 3. Recording for Self-Review: Capture your performance to objectively review your eye contact habits. Make adjustments as needed. 4. Intentional Eye Closure: If eye closure is necessary for emotional or technical reasons, make it deliberate and intentional to not seem disengaged. 5. Bright Stage Lights: Offer techniques like body orientation to signify where your attention is, especially when direct eye contact isn't possible due to lighting. Tips for Application • Use Audience Sectors: Break the audience into sections. Look at different sections at different times to give the impression you're engaging with everyone. • Frequency Check: Be conscious of how often you close your eyes or engage with the audience via eye contact. Aim for balance. • Nonverbal Cues: Utilize your body language to augment your eye contact, especially when lights are too bright for direct eye contact. The goal is not just to be technically proficient but also to be effective communicators on stage, turning casual spectators into committed fans. #intentionalmusicianship #performancepractice #stagepresence #audienceengagement #eyecontact #musicalstorytelling #performancetips #communication #stagecommunication #performerskills #audienceconnection #musicperformance #musicianlife #concerttips #performancetechniques #livemusic #musicianadvice #engageyouraudience #musicalexpression #stagecraft Produced by Red House Productions Welcome to Intentional Musicianship!!!! Optimizing Musical Expression for Adaptable Performances
In this episode, we explore the nuanced art of live musical performance, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and connection with the audience. The discussion covers key musical elements like dynamics, articulation, tempo, and tension, highlighting how these can make or break a live performance. Musicians are encouraged to think beyond the notes on the page and consider the emotional and aesthetic impacts of their choices. For instance, using musical marks like fermatas or cesuras can add layers of tension and engagement in a piece. Practical Tips: 1. Consciously Use Dynamics: Tailor your volume levels to the venue and audience. Practice your pieces at different dynamics to be prepared for any performance setting. 2. Articulation Matters: Adjust your articulation based on the venue and the specific sound you're aiming for. This nuance can significantly impact how your music resonates with the audience. 3. Contextual Tempo: Be mindful of your audience when deciding the tempo of your piece. A faster tempo can add excitement, while a slower one can provide emotional weight. 4. Use Musical Marks for Tension: Experimenting with fermatas or cesuras can create additional emotional layers, making your performance more engaging. 5. Don't Be Literal, Be Effective: The exact notes might be less critical than the emotional impact they create, especially in live performances. 6. Adapt and Overcome: Keep a close eye on your audience and adapt your performance in real-time for maximum engagement. The ultimate goal is effective communication with your audience. By incorporating these techniques into your practice and performance, you'll not only improve your musical skills but also enhance your ability to connect with your audience, fulfilling the goal of creating an intentional, engaging musical event. #intentionalmusicianship #musicalexpression #performancepractice #livemusic #audienceengagement #musicalstorytelling #stageperformance #contrastandcompression #musicianlife #dynamics #articulation #musicaltechniques #musicteachers #soundcheck #livemusicproduction #musicianadvice #musicalcontrast #musicalcommunication #storytellingthroughmusic #musicalperformance #musicpodcast #stagecraft #performancetips #musicianship #audienceconnection #musicdynamics Produced by Red House Productions Welcome to Intentional Musicianship!!!! What does the Customer Want? Bridging the Gap in Expectations
Welcome to another episode of "Intentional Musicianship." In this episode, we delve into the fascinating world of audience dynamics and expectations through the lens of the Kano model. Let's explore how the Kano model's three categories—Dissatisfiers, Satisfiers, and Exciters—play a pivotal role in creating exceptional musical experiences: 1. Understanding Dissatisfiers: The Kano model classifies Dissatisfiers as basic expectations. These are the fundamental elements that, when lacking, lead to audience dissatisfaction. In the context of music performances, they include issues like wrong notes, poor tuning, and imbalanced sound. However, the significance of Dissatisfiers varies depending on your audience. 2. Recognizing Satisfiers: Satisfiers, or Norms, encompass elements that meet expected standards. These are essential for maintaining a satisfactory performance, such as providing a clean venue, clear directions, and accessible facilities. For different types of audiences, what constitutes a Satisfier may differ significantly. 3. Embracing Exciters: Exciters are the elements that surpass expectations, leaving a lasting impression on the audience. This category represents opportunities for musicians to elevate their performance and create a unique brand. Examples include innovative stage design, engaging storytelling, and multimedia integration. Audience-Centric Planning: Tailoring your performance to your audience's specific Dissatisfiers, Satisfiers, and Exciters is essential. By understanding your audience's expectations, you can plan a more engaging and satisfying experience, whether you're performing for a school audience, competition judges, or a general public. Modern Trends and Adaptation: As audience preferences evolve with modern trends, musicians are encouraged to adapt. Incorporating multimedia, integrating movement, and exploring various art forms can help performers align with contemporary expectations and stand out in a crowded entertainment landscape. Balancing Performance Elements: Achieving a memorable performance involves balancing various elements, from stage presence and costume changes to storytelling. The episode provides examples of iconic performers who masterfully integrate these components to captivate their audiences. Emotional Connection and Storytelling: The power of storytelling and emotional connection is highlighted through an example where music is paired with a heartfelt letter. This emotional resonance can transform a performance into a deeply moving experience for the audience. Building a Unique Show: Crafting a unique and engaging show requires careful consideration of your context, audience, and goals. Understanding the "voice of the customer" is emphasized as a crucial step in creating an extraordinary musical experience. Success Stories and Continuous Improvement: The episode shares success stories from musicians who have thrived by focusing on audience engagement and continuous improvement. These stories underscore the importance of honing your craft through practice, experimentation, and perseverance. As you continue your musical journey, keep the Kano model in mind. By identifying Dissatisfiers, meeting Satisfiers, and embracing Exciters, you can tailor your performances to create exceptional experiences that resonate with your audience.
