As a member of the United States Alpine Ski Team from ages sixteen to twenty-three, she experienced both success and failure at the highest level, navigated the trauma of injuries, and gained a rare, firsthand view of the world through international competition. After stepping away from racing, Kim began her career at Sugar Mountain Resort and worked her way from weed eater to Vice President, learning the business from the ground up.     Beyond the Trailhead: How Access Can Build Advocacy

    Join us as we talk with Maddie Bartosh, Trail Programs Manager at Rutherford Outdoor Coalition. Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Maddie studied psychology and biology at Coastal Carolina University before heading to Western North Carolina to work with ROC. She served two 11-month terms as an AmeriCorps Trails and Education Coordinator, where she led trail workdays across 18.5 miles of trail in Rutherford County, guided outings on local trails and the Broad River, and helped coordinate youth education programs. That experience sparked a deep love for outdoor recreation, especially sustainable trail building, land stewardship, and youth education. Now as Trail Programs Manager, Maddie oversees trail programming, strengthens partnerships with groups like Conserving Carolina and the Carolina Climbers’ Coalition, and continues to engage volunteers and community members in meaningful outdoor work. She is currently developing a Regenerative Tourism Program for the Lake Lure area and a streambank restoration plan for the Broad River following Hurricane Helene, both aimed at connecting more people to the land and waters that make Rutherford County special.

    Growing Greenville: How a City Connects People and Place

    Join us as we talk with Andrew Schmidt! Andrew D. Schmidt, CDME, CHME, MPA is a thirty-year veteran of the hospitality industry with a mix of hotel, destination marketing, and academic background. Andrew has worked with the Greenville-Pitt County Convention & Visitors Bureau (Visit Greenville, NC) in various capacities for thirty years and currently serves as the President & CEO for the CVB and Greenville-Pitt County Sports Commission. Andrew was an Adjunct Faculty Member of the ECU School of Hospitality Leadership from 2001-2016 and currently serves on the North Carolina Travel & Tourism Board, Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina Board, and as Chair of the NC Sports Association. Andrew holds a graduate degree from East Carolina University in the field of Public Administration and received his undergraduate degree from ECU as well.     A Creative State: How the Arts Shape North Carolina

    We are so excited to talk with Vicki Vitiello! Vicki is the Deputy Director for the North Carolina Arts Council! Vicki takes on this role with more than 25 years of leadership and senior program experience with the agency. In her 10-year tenure as Director of Operations, she oversaw pandemic recovery efforts and the distribution of $25 million in federal funding to our state’s hard-hit nonprofit arts sector. Vicki helped manage the growth of the N.C. Arts Council’s annual grants portfolio to more than 1,000 awards annually, and established the North Carolina Creative Forces Initiative, which brings arts to military-connected audiences for healing and resiliency. A lifelong advocate and supporter of the arts, Vicki has also held leadership roles at the Durham Arts Council and the Arts Council of Wilson, and served as Executive Director of the Arts and Humanities Assembly of Boulder, Colorado. A hallmark of Vicki’s approach to arts administration is building initiatives to invest in artist professional development, arts in education, and community engagement and outreach programming.     Cultivating Success: Nature, Education and Community

    Join us as we talk to Paige Burns! Paige has served as Horticulture agent for Richmond County since 2007, and in addition as County Extension Director since 2019. Her work has covered multiple areas related to plants, natural resources, and economic development. Paige works with specialty crop farmers in the areas of production, pest management, farm food safety and developing marketing outlets. She also helps homeowners with lawn and garden care, pest management, and educating the public on native plants and the unique longleaf pine ecosystem. She supports the Richmond County Beekeepers Association and runs the Richmond Roots Garden Club, a monthly meet-up with programs and field trips for people passionate about plants which she started in 2023.     Join us for a conversation with a panel of experts from the NC Main Street Program! Today, we’re excited to welcome Amy Suggs, Naomi Riley, Charles Halsall, Sherry Adams, and Joy Almond. Amy Suggs is a Main Street Specialist with the NC Main Street & Rural Planning Center. She works closely with local Main Street programs, facilitating strategic planning and providing technical assistance. Amy is a frequent presenter at the NC Main Street Conference, other statewide trainings, and has shared her expertise at the National Main Street Conference, Main Street Now. Naomi Riley is the NC Main Street Education Coordinator with the NC Department of Commerce. With over 16 years of experience revitalizing communities across North Carolina, she’s known for her strategic thinking, collaborative leadership, and dedication to small businesses. Charles Halsall is a native of Pittsburgh and a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Regional Planning. He has been with the NC Department of Commerce since 2006, serving in roles from community planner to economic development planner, and joined the NC Main Street team in 2017 as a Main Street Program Specialist. Sherry Adams brings over 35 years of experience in downtown revitalization across North Carolina and beyond. For the past 17+ years, she has served on the NC Main Street team at the North Carolina Department of Commerce, helping communities transform their downtowns into thriving economic and cultural centers. Her career spans leadership roles including Main Street Director for Rutherfordton and Burlington, Downtown Development lead in Davidson, and Vice President of Downtown Greensboro Inc. Sherry is passionate about partnerships and collaboration to build vibrant, creative downtown communities. Joy Almond served as the Main Street Manager for the City of Albemarle for eight years. During that time, she implemented the Downtown Albemarle social district, played a key role in developing the Downtown Albemarle Catalyst Grant, and led numerous community-driven events. In December 2024, Joy joined the NC Main Street and Rural Planning Center as a Main Street Program Specialist, supporting local Main Street directors to foster community engagement and economic growth.     Unlocking Potential: Education, Work, and Well-Being

    Join us as we talk to Anita Brown-Graham! Anita is the founder and director of the ncIMPACT Initiative and the Gladys Hall Coates Distinguished Professor of Public Law and Government at the UNC School of Government. This initiative seeks to expand the School’s capacity to work with public officials on complex policy issues including economic mobility, the expansion of prekindergarten, and extending the labor pool. In 2020, she was named the Gladys Hall Coates Distinguished Professor of Public Law and Government at the School. Brown-Graham previously taught at the School from 1994 to 2006, specializing in governmental liability and economic development aimed at revitalizing communities. She served as director of the Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI) at North Carolina State University from 2007 to 2016, where she led efforts to build North Carolina’s capacity for economic development and prosperity, working with business, government, and higher education leaders from across the state. Brown-Graham began her career as a law clerk in the Eastern District of California. She is a William C. Friday Fellow, an American Marshall Fellow, and was named Distinguished Global Fellow by the Eisenhower Fellowships in 2021. The White House named her a 2013 Champion of Change for her work at IEI, and the Triangle Business Journal awarded her the inaugural 2021 Andrea Harris Trailblazer Award and named her a 2017 CEO of the year. Brown-Graham serves on the boards of several organizations, including Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina.     Roots & Refuge: Healing People and Place at Harriet Tubman Freedom Farm

    Join us as we get to talk with farmer Dallas Robinson about her passion project, the Harriet Tubman Freedom Farm! Dallas loves cats, plants, and soil! Her farming journey started in 2017, when she finally took the advice of a persistent college friend to attend the Soul Fire Farmer's Immersion that summer. It was love at first ripe tomato. Dallas apprenticed on various farms in North Carolina, Illinois, and completed the Farm Beginnings Course in Asheville in the fall of 2019. The Harriet Tubman Freedom Farm was launched in 2020. Like a pea tendril meanders, so has Dallas's path and she is very grateful to have come back to the farm in Whitakers, NC. They are from Tillery, North Carolina and their work spans agriculture, education, law, and community empowerment. Julius Tillery is a fifth-generation cotton farmer dedicated to preserving and redefining the legacy of Black cotton farming. He founded BlackCotton, a company that transforms raw cotton into home décor and accessories, aiming to honor his roots and promote Black-grown cotton. Julius has been recognized for his leadership and contributions to agriculture and rural development. His efforts have earned him accolades such as the 2021 Williams C. Friday Award from NC State University and Distinguished Young Alumni Award from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Paul Nicholson is a proud native of Tillery, NC and currently serves as the Director of a nonprofit organization based in Halifax County, dedicated to empowering youth across District 27. Paul has held impactful roles in public, charter, and private educational institutions. His diverse experience fuels his mission to guide the next generation toward their own greatness, blending technology, mentorship, and purpose-driven leadership to create lasting change. Gary Rudolph Redding is a dedicated attorney and educator with a deep commitment to public interest law and community empowerment. A native of Tillery, NC, he is a third-generation “resettler” in the historic Tillery New Deal Resettlement Project, an initiative born from President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1935 New Deal. Rooted in his humble beginnings and inspired by his family’s legacy, Gary continues to uplift marginalized voices and shape narratives that honor history, identity, and justice.     Join us as we talk to Julius Tillery, Paul Nicholson, and Gary Rudolph Redding, three men from Tillery, North Carolina whose work spans agriculture, education, law, and community empowerment. Julius Tillery is a fifth-generation cotton farmer dedicated to preserving and redefining the legacy of Black cotton farming. He founded BlackCotton, a company that transforms raw cotton into home décor and accessories, aiming to honor his roots and promote Black-grown cotton. Julius has been recognized for his leadership and contributions to agriculture and rural development. His efforts have earned him accolades such as the 2021 Williams C. Friday Award from NC State University and Distinguished Young Alumni Award from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Paul Nicholson is a proud native of Tillery, NC and currently serves as the Director of a nonprofit organization based in Halifax County, dedicated to empowering youth across District 27. Paul has held impactful roles in public, charter, and private educational institutions. His diverse experience fuels his mission to guide the next generation toward their own greatness, blending technology, mentorship, and purpose-driven leadership to create lasting change. Gary Rudolph Redding is a dedicated attorney and educator with a deep commitment to public interest law and community empowerment. A native of Tillery, NC, he is a third-generation “resettler” in the historic Tillery New Deal Resettlement Project, an initiative born from President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1935 New Deal. Rooted in his humble beginnings and inspired by his family’s legacy, Gary continues to uplift marginalized voices and shape narratives that honor history, identity, and justice.     Connecting to the Coharie River with the Coharie Tribe
