Olive Oil Consumption and Reduced Risk of Dementia Mortality

This research investigates the link between olive oil consumption and dementia-related death. The study followed a large cohort of US adults for nearly three decades, assessing olive oil intake and diet quality. Results indicated that higher olive oil consumption, particularly more than 7 g/d, was associated with a significantly lower risk of dementia-related mortality, even when considering overall diet quality. Furthermore, substituting margarine and mayonnaise with olive oil showed a reduced risk. These findings suggest incorporating olive oil into the diet could be a valuable strategy for reducing dementia mortality risk, especially for women. The researchers highlight that olive oil may exert neuroprotective effects, potentially improving vascular health and reducing inflammation in the brain.

Mediterranean diet could help lower cancer risk in obesity

This research investigates the relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) and the risk of obesity-related cancers (ORCs). The study analyzed data from the European Prospective Investigation Into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort, involving over 450,000 participants across 10 European countries, and found that higher adherence to the MedDiet was associated with a modest reduction in ORC risk. Interestingly, the study found no evidence that this association was mediated by body mass index (BMI) or waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). The study concludes that embracing the MedDiet could contribute to cancer prevention through pathways beyond just managing weight. Further research is recommended to understand the mechanisms that may be contributing to the protective nature of the MedDiet.
