Modernist Fish
by James Green
We're all moderns in a modernist world, swamped and distracted from the truth by secularism, "the deep state", the "deep church" and more. And so, we have to put in extra effort to relearn how to live a fully traditional Christian life again. James Green and Tim Dominik are two such "modernist fish" here to journey with you on this process of relearning. Here, we'll discuss theology, philosophy, free will, Catholic spiritual life, politics, history, and more in conversations sure to be full of hot takes, wild claims, and how to see the world as it really is, which is most definitely not what the world has been telling you it is. This is the podcast accompaniment to the Grain of Wheat Substack at grainofwheat.substack.com and conversations will often parallel or accompany written pieces from the site, with audio versions of selected articles also to be made available on this podcast feed. Oh, and also just like our Substack page, everything somehow relates to John 12:24! <a

Is Waiting It Out Enough of a Plan? (w. TLM_Ryan & Michael Naaden)
A discussion on the crises in the Church and world with TLMRyan & Michael Naaden, and how to fix it while being more hopeful and less divided when we all have different models of the crisis, which originally aired on Michael Naaden’s channel and which Stephen Kokx shouted out in his discussion yesterday with The Catholic Esquire.TLM_Ryan is on X at @TLM_Ryan and on YouTube at Pre-Conciliar Radio. He recently appeared on Avoiding Babylon. Michael Naaden is a sedevacantist liturgical scholar and comedian, and is on X at @realsedepicante and on YouTube.Timestamps* 00:00 Introductions* 3:45 Is it productive for Catholics to debate each other?* 7:55 Should traditionalists “check out” from the chaos?* 14:56 Do popesplainers even believe themselves?* 17:18 Is Trad-Inc a real thing? Are people self-censoring and why?* 34:18 Should laity make Catholic content, or are they displacing the clergy?* 39:28 What is the “recognize and resist” position?* 48:02 Are traditionalists blackpilling too much? * 55:07 What is the plan to fix the crisis? Is waiting it out a plan?* 1:11:13 When does traditionalism become too political?* 1:23:44 How are we not all just being Protestants?Related and Referenced Articles Notes:Michael and TLM_Ryan are quite a bit more pessimistic on the outlook, but I would also encourage checking out Dr. Kwasniewski’s wise words on the subject of the crisis and how solutions require building up personal piety regardless of the overall nature of crises at large: This is a public episode. Catholic Inc. & the Bureaucratic Infiltration of the Church (w. Michael Naaden/SedePicante)
Michael Naaden at @RealSedePicante on YouTube and X and I chat about theology, Church politics, humorous Catholic influencers, the managerial bureaucratic anti-Church within the Church, the problems that have befallen Catholic Inc. and Trad Inc. ever since Pope Francis deranged Catholic media, how John Courtney Murray and LSD influenced Vatican II and the Novus Ordo, “End the Fed Save the Church”, and positive constructive steps forward that traditionalists, regardless of their views on R&R vs. sedevacantism, can agree on. Michael is the most rational, seemingly non-crazy sede that I’ve ever talked with and while I still think the position is wrong and not the best model for what has been going on in the Church, I’m not necessarily presuming to condemn those who have reasoned to it in good faith. Some sedes clearly seem to come from an angry and/or scrupulous perspective, which more closely fits the definition of schism, but Michael, on the other hand is quite willing to reason through things and seems interested in the good of all Catholics and the need to not just wait for God to act or for the “end times counter Church” to self destruct. This video premiered on Michael’s channel and is reproduced with permission. Modernist Fish Episode 3: Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Sedevacantism, and the Life in Christ
Episode 3 of the Modernist Fish podcast is an interview with Orthodox catechumen Ian (a.k.a AverageSoutherner online). We met online earlier this week while debating some sedevacantists and had a great conversation on theology. Today we decided to have another about what unites and still divides us as Orthodox vs. Catholics, what is true vs. false ecumenism, the sad state of sedevacantists like the Dimondites, how to debate heretics with charity, on living a full spiritual life through praying constantly, and more. We had so much to say about all of these topics, that we made it nowhere near other theological issues like Palamism, Hesychasm, and Monarchical Trinitarianism, as well as of course the Papacy and conciliarism, so we hope to have another conversation soon.Timestamps:2:00 Ian's background 12:30 Resilience of the Russian people's faith 16:10 Eastern vs. Western theology 26:15 Jay Dyer 27:30 Orthodoxy 28:50 Prayer Rule and a Spiritual Father 41:23 Cures for Scrupulosity 43:25 Sedevacantism 55:15 Debating w. vs w/o Charity 1:06:19 Ecumenism 1:11:04 The Dimondites make some valid points 1:14:51 Comparison between Post Vatican II west and the "Old Believer" schism1:23:29 Empathy for the Pope 1:27:02 Curiosity 1:32:49 Ora et Labora and entering into eternity 1:36:22 Fasting 1:40:05 The Life in Christ 1:46:11 Constant Prayer 1:47:59 LaborWatch the video version of the conversation on YouTube here: We're all moderns in a modernist world, swamped and distracted from the truth by secularism, "the deep state", the "deep church" and more. This is the audio version of the entirety of my series on James Lindsay, Charles Haywood, and the debate over the “woke right”:Links to written versions:(0:00-25:05) Part I talks about the background of James Lindsay as well as arguments for what he is right about. Don't Be Woke About the "Woke Right": Part III
This is the audio version of Part III of a multi-part series as the whole James Lindsay saga is massive, and he, as well as his opponents, are crazily prolific. . Part I detailed the background of James Lindsay as well as arguments for what he is right about. Part II focused on where he and his much-loved vision of classical liberalism are wrong, or at least how he is much more paranoid than he should be, as well as how he is falling into the same sort of mimetic dialectical trap that he critiques. Modernist Fish: Episode 2 - Jordan Peterson? Lunatic, Liar, or Believer
Episode 2 of the Modernist Fish podcast is about Jordan Peterson and how Christians ought to relate to him and to his work. This is the audio version of the show. You can watch the original video version on Rumble at https://rumble.com/c/c-7040750 or on YouTube here: Several diatribes against Jordan Peterson have been published online recently, bringing new criticism against the otherwise conservative favorite. Who is he? Why, given that his work seems very Christian and he has brought many people back to Christ, does Jordan himself not seem to believe? Is Jordan lying to himself or the world? Is he a lunatic in some way or another, and incomprehensible to others and to himself? Or is Jordan on his way to becoming a Christian? But what’s holding him back? We're going to look into Jordan's philosophy and his wrestling with his own faith to determine how Christians should wrestle with and relate to Jordan's work and other similar popular (and controversial) public intellectuals.Sources: Jordan Peterson on the Power of the Easter Message: Against Jordan Peterson - by Sanfedisti: JORDAN PETERSON: CANADIAN PSYCHO - Frank Wright: Navigating Belief, Skepticism, and the Afterlife | Alex O'Connor CosmicSkeptic | EP 451: The Terror of Believing in Christ | John Rich: More about the Modernist Fish podcast, available through this Substack site and newsletter alongside YouTube, Rumble, and various other podcast platforms:We're all moderns in a modernist world, swamped and distracted from the truth by secularism, "the deep state", the "deep church" and more. Don't Be Woke About the "Woke Right": Part 1 (Audio Version)
This is an audio version of Part 1 of a multi-part series on James Lindsay and the “woke right” saga. The story is massive, because he, as well as his opponents, are crazily prolific. He has for example published over 272,000+ X posts (tweets). This, Part I details the background of James Lindsay as well as arguments for what he is right about. Part II will focus on where he is wrong, or at least where he is much more paranoid than he should be, as well as how he is falling into the same sort of mimetic dialectical trap that he critiques. Part III will evaluate a realistic path forward for the political and religious right that avoids the mimetic traps leading to wokeness in all its forms while discussing how one should relate to the work of complex and controversial intellectuals like Lindsay. Part II will hopefully be out next weekend.Read the written form of the article on the Grain of Wheat Substack here: https://grainofwheat.substack.com/p/dont-be-woke-about-the-woke-right(Music is "Chant of the Ancients" by Cheryl Vera licensed for reuse with attribution and a public domain version of the 13th century Spanish song "Santa Maria, Strela do Dia")More about the Modernist Fish podcast, available through this Substack site and newsletter alongside YouTube, Rumble, and various other podcast platforms:We're all moderns in a modernist world, swamped and distracted from the truth by secularism, "the deep state", the "deep church" and more. Modernist Fish Podcast Episode 1: Why Byzantine?
Episode 1 of the Modernist Fish podcast features a discussion between James Green and Timothy Dominik about the relationship and differences between the Roman and Byzantine Rites, why Tim became Byzantine, the differing strengths and weaknesses of being one or the other, and what each Rite has to offer the other. We live-streamed our discussion originally on Rumble earlier today, but had some minor confusion at the beginning of our discussion and one of our computers randomly shutting down in the middle, so the audio version has been lightly edited for clarity. The end product is a little sub-optimal still, but we will hopefully have technical details improved a bit by the time of our next interview show. Thank you for your patience.Modernist Fish features interviews and discussions about all the same sorts of topics covered on this site along with audio versions of some of our most popular essays.
