    26. The healing power of creativity after cancer and loss - with Lisamarie Pearson

In this episode, we're talking about what resilience looks like in real life—not the polished version, but the gritty, painful, keep-going-anyway kind. My guest, Lisamarie Pearson, shares her journey through a life-altering diagnosis, losing her grandmother, and the identity shift that followed. In the middle of it all, she rediscovered a skill her grandmother taught her: how to sew.  What started as an outlet quickly became a lifeline, and eventually, a purpose-driven business creating her now-beloved "octopals." If you've ever felt lost in survival mode, unsure of who you are anymore, or craving something that feels like you again—this conversation will remind you it's never too late to start over. Lisamarie is the founder of Scatterbrain Toys, where she creates sensory-friendly plush toys designed to inspire creativity and bring comfort and joy. In this episode, we cover:  The emotional toll of navigating cancer and grief at the same time. The identity shift that happens after trauma, and how to rebuild from it. How creativity can become a powerful tool for healing. The mental load of motherhood and running a business—and why time feels so limited. 25. How long does postpartum really last? Anxiety, OCD, and intrusive thoughts after baby

Everyone talks about the first six weeks after having a baby. But what if postpartum lasts much longer?  In this episode, we're having a raw and honest conversation about how long postpartum really lasts, especially when it comes to mental health.  My guest Alyssa Maio and I explore how the common narrative around "baby blues" can minimize the reality of what many mothers experience.  If you've ever felt like something wasn't quite right after having a baby, even long after the newborn stage, you're not alone. This conversation is about normalizing the reality that postpartum recovery can take much longer than anyone prepares you for. In this episode, we cover:  The myth that postpartum recovery ends at 6–12 weeks. How the phrase "baby blues" minimizes what mamas are going through.  What postpartum anxiety, OCD, and intrusive thoughts can really feel like. Why these symptoms are often misunderstood or dismissed. What I wish I knew about postpartum mental health before having my babies.    Resources & Links: What does maternity leave look like in other countries? 22. From Baby Pics to TikTok Teens: Protecting Our Kids in a Digital World - with Prof. Joana Gaia

Today we're diving into one of the trickiest parts of modern parenting—raising kids in the digital age. From posting baby photos to getting them their first phone, the Internet is woven into every stage of our children's lives. But how do we balance sharing and connection with privacy and protection?   Joining me for this conversation is Professor Joana Gaia, Clinical Assistant Professor of Management Science and Systems at the University at Buffalo School of Management.    She shares why our online and offline lives shouldn't be treated as separate worlds, and how applying the same social rules to both can help us raise more self-aware, digitally responsible kids.    If you've ever second-guessed sharing that cute photo, felt uneasy about your child's screen habits, or wondered how to keep up with AI, this episode is your roadmap for navigating it all.   In this episode, we cover:  The real risks (and realities) of AI, from deepfakes to data collection, and what parents can actually do to stay ahead. Don't panic! Joana breaks down what data fraudsters really want (and it's not what most parents think). The most overlooked online safety tool that can make a huge difference in protecting your child's privacy. Why "just say no to screen time" isn't the answer. And the guilt-free permission we've been waiting for!  Plus, Joana shares the unexpected online game she uses in her classes to teach project management.   Connect with Joana:  Through the University at Buffalo    Connect with Christine: Follow on Instagram Follow on TikTok  Check out my website   Be sure to subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode!

    19. The Future of Women's Health: Fighting Misinformation, with Dr. Nina Strollo

In this episode, I'm delighted to sit down with Dr. Nina Strollo, a board-certified OB/GYN, for an unfiltered conversation about the growing crisis in women's health care. Nothing is off-limits. We dive into how the current political climate is stripping away access to reproductive care. And Dr. Strollo sheds light on how a broken medical system, compounded by the spread of misinformation on social media, is putting women's health at risk.  We also confront the realities of medical gaslighting and gender bias in exam rooms. Now, more than ever, finding a trusted provider and reliable information is essential. Dr. Strollo encourages women to be skeptical, stay curious, ask questions, and protect their right to informed, evidence-based care. And support each other!    In this episode, we cover:  How legislative attacks and policy changes are rolling back women's rights and forcing doctors into impossible decisions. The dangerous ripple effect misinformation can have when it reaches the exam room.  How we can empower the next generation of girls to make informed, confident choices about their own bodies. The most exciting thing going on in women's medicine right now, according to Dr. Strollo.  The ONE simple action we can all take today to drive meaningful change in women's lives.    Resources & Links: Women's health has been overlooked for decades. 18. Why intimacy feels so hard after kids (and what to do about it), with Jill Barrile

This is the conversation I've been CRAVING. And maybe you have too. I sat down with Jill Barrile, intimacy and relationship coach and boudoir photographer, to have the raw, honest talk about intimacy I've been wanting to have for a while.  Once kids enter the picture, everything changes, including the way we connect with our partners. Between parenting, managing a household, and working full time, intimacy often falls to the bottom of the list.  But what if it doesn't have to? How can we fuel our relationship and connection, even in this chaotic, beautiful, overstimulating season? Jill brings a judgment-free energy to this episode, and offers both practical tools and deep, soul-level insight into what real intimacy can look like after kids.  If you've ever felt disconnected from your partner — or from yourself — this episode is for you.   In this episode, we cover:  The very real challenges of maintaining intimacy after becoming parents. Why connection often feels like an afterthought when you're just trying to survive the day. The simple shift I needed permission to make in my relationship. Why scheduling date nights feels transactional, and how to reframe it. How to clear mental clutter and create space for intimacy and connection. The one question Jill asks herself daily to stay anchored in joy.   Resources & Links: I came across this article about being touched out last year and it really hit.    Connect with Jill:  Follow on Instagram  Follow on Facebook  Check out her website   Connect with Christine: Follow on Instagram Follow on TikTok  Check out my website   Be sure to subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode!

    17. Crunchy, Silky, Scrunchie - What kind of mom are you?

In this episode, I'm joined by Danna Berlad, fellow millennial mama and founder of Feel Good Snax, a healthy snack brand born from her desire to feed her kids additive-free, protein-packed treats. What started as another internet deep dive, turned into a lesson about crunchy, silky, and scrunchie moms. These playful labels are helping millennial moms name how we show up as parents, while shaking off the judgment we so often feel from others (and from ourselves). Danna and I had fun figuring out where we fall on the spectrum. And then we put our mom styles to the test!  At the end of the day, we both agree: whether you're proudly crunchy, totally silky, or thriving somewhere in the middle (I see you fellow scrunchies), the only "right" way to parent is the one that works for you.   In this episode, we cover:  What it means to be a "crunchy," "silky," or "scrunchie" mom. Danna's journey of becoming a momtrepreneur.  Natural vs. everything else — why is feeding our kids so complicated? The pressure and stigma around breastfeeding. Sleep training, co-sleeping, or crying-it-out…the kids are OK.    Resources & Links: Here's the list of "dirty dozen" foods with the highest amounts of pesticide residues. 14. Unpacking nudity, food attitudes, body image, and enforced modesty

In this episode, my guest Alyse Tuccio and I reflect on our childhood experiences around nudity, modesty, food, self-control, and body image. What started as a casual chit chat during a Brazilian wax, turned into a deep dive into the ways modesty standards were enforced differently for us versus our brothers.  In this unfiltered conversation, we unpack the messages we received growing up about our bodies, the fear of being objectified, and how these lessons still shape our behaviors today.    In this episode, we cover:  Is there a "right" age when parents should stop changing or using the bathroom in front of their kids? Bathing children together is an opportunity to teach them about body awareness, boundaries, and consent.  Fostering a healthy relationship with food starts with parents' behavior.  The connection between enforced modesty and body shaming.  While pop stars shaped our perception of the ideal body type, parents used them as blueprints for what is "inappropriate" dress.  Does clothing choice have anything to do with sexual assault? 13. Daycare vs. staying home: A stay-at-home mom's journey through preschool, big emotions, and doubt

After taking the month of December to focus on my family and celebrate the holiday season, Momming as a Millennial is back with a new episode!  When my guest, Amanda Phillips got a text message from her son's preschool teacher telling her he was crying "too loudly" and disrupting the class, she started doubting her decision to send him to school.  At a complete loss, she emailed me wondering if she had done her son a disservice by not sending him to daycare. Overcome with emotion from reading her message, I set out to find some answers.  Join me and Amanda as we discuss her journey as a stay-at-home mom, the impact of the pandemic on family structure, and all aspects of the daycare debate.    In this episode, we cover:  Why more and more American women are leaving the workforce to stay home with their children.  COVID, childcare costs, political and societal influences—oh my!  One mom's journey of leaving the workforce to stay home with her babies.  How do finances work when there's one income? A stay-at-home mom's purchasing power.   One thing SAHM's and working parents have in common.  The great debate—is it better to send your child to daycare or keep them home?   Resources & Links: It's clear the COVID pandemic disproportionately impacted women in the workforce, especially in female-dominated sectors.  What is the average cost of child care? Depends on what state you live in.  More and more American women are forgoing work outside the home to take care of their children, citing the high cost of childcare as the biggest driver.  I reference this study from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) when discussing daycare vs. staying home.    Connect with Amanda:  Follow on Instagram    Connect with Christine: Follow on Instagram Follow on TikTok  Check out my website   Be sure to subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode!

    12. Your questions answered: Real talk for millennial moms

Exactly one year ago today—on the day before Thanksgiving—I made a big decision: I was finally going to commit to developing and launching a podcast. Now, a year later, I'm taking a moment to reflect on how far I've come, and I can't help but feel incredibly grateful. Grateful for this journey. Grateful for all the support I've received. Grateful for each of you who listens, shares, and connects with this podcast. So this episode is all about YOU—the listeners who make this so rewarding. I wanted to take a beat and answer some of the questions you've been curious about. A huge thank you to everyone who submitted a question! If you have more questions or ideas for future episodes, I'd love to hear them. Send me a DM on Instagram.   In this episode, we dive into your amazing questions. Here's a sneak peak of what we cover:  My journey of practicing patience—it's something I work on daily. Why Tara Mohr's Playing Big is a must-read for every woman (seriously, go grab it!). The truth about feedback: It says much more about the giver than the receiver. It's normal to feel resentful or unappreciated sometimes. 11. Parent or friend? The hidden struggle of being my mom's best friend

This episode is HEAVY. I've been working on myself for a few years, and in doing so I've uncovered some traumas and brought to light some hard truths.  In this episode, I open up about my relationship with my parents. It's an emotional journey, and I don't make it through without shedding a few tears. My extremely supportive guest, Stephany Weingartner and I explore the concept of parents as friends. We discuss some difficult situations we experienced growing up, highlighting how complex parent-child relationships can be.  This conversation isn't easy, but I hope that by being open and vulnerable, I can encourage others to start similar discussions in their own lives and begin the healing they deserve.   In this episode, we cover:  How the roles and responsibilities of being a parent differ from those of being a friend.  The challenges of parent-child role confusion and enmeshment that can occur when parents treat their children as friends. What happens when parents rely on their children as confidants, or lean on them for emotional support. It can create lasting effects on the child's mental well-being.  The concept of parentification—when children are made to take on adult-like caregiving or emotional responsibilities for their parents. The importance of setting boundaries, maintaining a clear parental role, and protecting children from adult burdens and responsibilities.   Resources & Links: Clinical psychologist Maddy Drew says while your child is still young, parents should avoid pursuing a friendship with them. 10. Momming when you're Type A, with Mandy Kraska - Part 2

We're back for part 2! I'm joined again by Mandy Kraska, an experienced educator, as we dive deeper into how personality traits influence our parenting styles.  Mandy kicks things off by sharing how her personality translates into her role as teacher. It looks something like: high expectations and personalized support, with some tough love mixed in.  I share a cringe-worthy story about managing my son's daily homework assignments, which quickly became a high-stress situation. Thankfully, I'm not alone!  What's the right approach -- helicopter, gentle parenting, laissez faire? Mandy and I get into the weeds on how our personality tendencies and challenges shape our approaches when it comes to helping our kids (or choosing to step back).    In this episode, we cover:  How high expectations and personalized support outside of the classroom translates for students who speak a language other than English.  The challenges of homework time, perfectionism, and learning to let go. Getting overly involved in our children's homework has only caused stress for us and them.  Focusing on real-world skills both at home and in the classroom emphasizes the larger goal we have as parents - helping our children grow into capable and well-rounded adults. When research shows that stepping in too much can hinder children's independence, how do we find the right balance? There's no one-size-fits-all approach, but achieving the right mix of hands-on support and encouraging independence is key.   Resources & Links: Here's the study that discusses how kids can benefit when parents take a step back.    Connect with Mandy: Follow on Instagram    Connect with Christine: Follow on Instagram Check out my website   Be sure to subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode!

    9. Momming when you're Type A, with Mandy Kraska - Part 1

This episode is all about personality types and how they impact our parenting styles, both positively and negatively. I'm joined by Mandy Kraska, a seasoned educator, who brings a unique perspective to the conversation. Join us for an honest conversation about our own personality traits and the ongoing struggle to find balance between routine and spontaneity.  Spoiler: I earned the nickname "All Business" in my early 20s, so you can guess what type of personality I bring to the table! And in the best guest moment I've experienced so far—Mandy shares why she always employs the Boy Scouts motto: Be Prepared.  We had so much to cover that we couldn't fit it all into one episode. Stay tuned for part 2, coming soon!    In this episode, we cover:  The intricate relationship between personality types and parenting styles.  How understanding your personality type creates self-awareness, helping to manage both internal and external conflicts. The self-imposed stress to create "perfect" experiences for our children, and recognizing when to let go to avoid burnout. Setting realistic expectations, and finding a balance between structured routines and spontaneity. Managing the heavy mental load and overstimulation that comes with parenting and always being "on."    Resources & Links: Learn more about the four personality types and see where you fall.    Connect with Mandy: Follow on Instagram    Connect with Christine: Follow on Instagram Check out my website   Be sure to subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode!

This episode is all about the highs and lows of traveling with children. 6. Balancing family, motherhood and aspirations, while avoiding burn out

In this episode I'm joined by Allison Lee, an Asian American mental health therapist and coach.  We discussed the challenges of meeting expectations of our parents, our children, and ourselves. There is significant pressure that comes from being "sandwiched" between caring for aging parents or grandparents, and young children. Throw in family obligations and cultural expectations, and there's a real recipe for burnout.  So what do we do?!  Allison shared her Repay Cycle with me, a tool all mamas can benefit from when it comes to balancing family obligations while raising children.  At the end of the episode Allison reveals the three things she does to manage her family, motherhood, and her career.  A friendly reminder: Everything you hear in this episode is meant to inform and should not be considered as therapy. If you need professional support, please contact Allison directly. In this episode, we cover:  The difficulties of prioritizing family needs versus personal and professional growth. Practical strategies for balancing cultural and familial obligations, while staying true to ourselves.  What is the sandwich generation and the unique challenges we face? How to apply The Repay Cycle tool in our lives to prevent burnout, and sustain complex relationships in a way that works for us too. The three things all mamas can do to help manage your time, energy, and relationships more effectively. 3. Boundary is not a dirty word - Part 1

In this episode I'm excited to welcome my first guest! I'm joined by fellow millennial mama, Bryanna Rayford, as we dive deep into a topic that's as tricky as it is crucial: setting boundaries with grandparents and caregivers.  We all cherish the love and support grandparents shower on our little ones, but what happens when their well-meaning actions cross the line? Enter: boundary setting.  Bryanna and I share our personal tales of navigating these delicate situations, from the awkwardness of saying "no" to the relief of finding balance. We had so much to cover on this topic, we couldn't fit it all into one episode. Stay tuned for part 2, coming soon!  In this episode, we cover:  The sensitive topic of setting boundaries with grandparents and caregivers, including the struggles that come with overstepping (well-intentioned or otherwise). The enmeshed family system and the benefit that establishing boundaries play in maintaining healthy family dynamics.   While it can be tough voicing your concerns or boundaries to those who raised you, clear communication is a necessary step toward ensuring your parenting style is acknowledged and respected by all who participate in your children's lives.    Resources & Links: Read more about the University of Michigan study where half of parents surveyed reported butting heads with their child's grandparent What exactly is an enmeshed family?  The Hanley Foundation provides insight on setting boundaries in an enmeshed family   Connect with Bryanna:  Follow on Instagram Connect with Christine: Follow on Instagram Check out my website   Be sure to subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode!

    2. Blue v. Pink: Gender Stereotypes in Playtime

Blue or pink? Barbie or car? Why not both?  In this deeply personal episode, I dive into the complex world of gender stereotypes in children's play. Growing up as the only girl among brothers, I've always challenged traditional notions of play based on gender.  Inspired by my son's fondness for playing dress up and my mother's reaction, I explore gendered toys and playtime, and the impact perpetuating gender stereotypes has on childrens' development.  If you're curious about the benefits of gender-neutral play, I share compelling research that highlights its positive impact on children's lives. In this episode, we cover:  Debunking the concept of "gendered" toys and exploring the historical and societal factors that contribute to gender stereotypes in toys. Insights and challenges around traditional expectations placed on children's play based on their gender, and how this influences their development.  With the pressure on parents to shape our children's perceptions of gender roles, how do we make sure we're setting them up for success in life?  Resources & Links: Check out the full list of studies and articles referenced in this episode on my show notes.  If you're looking for ideas on how to implement gender-neutral play, read my blog: 5 Practical Tips for Creating a Gender-Neutral Playroom Connect with Christine: Follow on Instagram Check out my website Be sure to subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode!
