"For the love of The Music Room" with Dave Durkee

When my family and I travelled to Canada recently we stayed with family in Nova Scotia. My husband and I were keen to keep up our regular musical practice, so we just thought we’d buy a cheap secondhand guitar and keyboard and that would tide us over. Scrolling through Facebook, my husband came across "The Music Room" - a musical instrument lending library that was only a short drive from where we were staying  - we couldn't believe our good fortune! The good fortune continued when we got chatting with the genuinely lovely couple behind this volunteer project - Dave and Judy Durkee. In this episode we'll hear from Dave  about how the concept started and has grown over the past five yearswhy this service is crucial for family and community engagementthe Award of Excellence programhow the Music Room supports local schools and community groups Note: Happy to report since the recording of this episode The Music Room has hit a total of 500 donated instruments in the collection since it started 5 years ago! What a remarkable achievement and an example of the generosity of musicians and music lovers from Yarmouth and surrounding areas.About The Music RoomDave is a semi retired music teacher living in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (Canada). He and his wife Judy run The Music Room from the basement of their home. They accept donations of used instruments from the general public. With the help of 6 volunteers, the instruments are repaired, adjusted, maintained and made available, free of charge, to individuals and groups in their community. It is such an amazing concept, and one that I hope spreads wide and far!For more info please visit the Facebook page The Music Room*for local Nova Scotians contact +1 902-881-2354Please share the episode with your friends, colleagues and family  members, and tag me on socials @mooversnshakersmusic Click here to find out more about the Routines to Rituals online, on-demand workshopClick here to go to the Moovers n Shakers Music websiteLove Music. Episode 36: From Electrician to world-renowned Musician with special guest Daoirí Farrell

“From Electrician to world-renowned Musician” with special guest Daoirí FarrellIt’s such a pleasure to invite a very special guest to the show this week. Dublin-born singer and bouzouki player Daoirí Farrell  is commonly accepted to be one of most important singers to come out of Ireland in recent years and according to “Irish Music” is singlehandedly spearheading a resurgence of the authentic in Irish folk music…he is rightly in demand all over the world.' Daoirí's live work sees the 2013 All Ireland Champion Singer touring far and wide, performing regularly at festivals around the globe including in Canada, Australia and Europe. He has also toured the USA as vocalist for Lúnasa, performed in the UK in the line-up of the renowned Transatlantic Sessions and played to a live and TV audience at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards at London's Royal Albert Hall. My family and I were so fortunate to see him perform in Tasmania at the magical mountain setting Wilder Tasmania and were mesmerised by his captivating vocals and exquisite bouzouki playing. But what also left our heart-cups full was the fact that he was just so down to earth, very humble, very human and deeply connected to sharing his music with members of the audience - a real Irish story-teller in the purest sense. Tune in to the full episode to enjoy his story-telling aboutHis unexpected path from electrician to musicianThe connection between the Greek and Irish bouzoukiThe importance of ‘sowing the seeds of music’ in early childhoodTips to look after your physical and mental health while on tour!To connect with Daoirí and find out the dates for the Irish tour in September , head over to his website: https://www.daoiri.com/Listen to him on:YouTubeFollow on socials: Facebook Thanks for spending your time with me today. Connecting Music, Language & International Day of Play!

Music, Language & International Day of Play!In this week’s episode I want to talk about the connection between Music and Language, and celebrate the first International Day of Play (June 11th 2024).These two topics are very close to my heart, given my training in and passion for musical learning and play-based learning as the foundational approach to early years education! It’s also timely given the current National campaign to ‘Lift Literacy’ for all Australians, and whilst this must be a National priority at government/stakeholder level there are simple ways we as educators and parents can contribute in the home, in day-care settings, kindergartens, and playgroups too. Enter Musical Play!!! Blue Zones, ikigai and adopting a "Musical Mindset”

Episode 31 : Blue Zones, ikigai & adopting a "Musical Mindset”Woah it’s been a massive week of learning and growth here at the Moovers and Shakers Music headquarters! I was fortunate enough to run an amazing online workshop for the group coaching program I’m a part of (Ending Body Burnout). I call this workshop "Tune into you" - pun intended -because it's about tuning into yourself through movement (Dao yin), breathwork, and making music with our voices and bodies! We all had SO much fun and I received great feedback on how good it felt to 'release tension and stress' and to feel a 'happiness and connection through making music with others'! If you are interested in hosting me for a similar workshop - either in person or online- for your workteams or group of friends, please send an inquiry via email to [email protected] I also had my first article published on an online parenting website  "Kiddipedia: click for link: it's about the importance of engaging in music, movement and mindfulness with your children over the winter months! And perhaps the biggest ‘win’ is that I have also signed an exciting partnership with an international organisation who -like me- share a mission to spread the magic and power of music to early childhood professionals and parents, to boost young children's learning, development wellbeing and school readiness. Stay tuned for more info on that as we develop our shared projects and training options! In today’s episode I’m talking about Mindset:how we as adults can learn tools to change and rewire our mindsetwhat I believe it means to have a musical mindsetknowing the value of integrating musical learning and mindfulness practices for the transferable learning and wellbeing benefits. how watching a doco on Blue Zones has helped me clarify my own 'ikigai' and 'plan de vida'the Moovers n Shakers Music "Three Cs" learning framework: Connect, Captivate, Collaborate I hope you get alot out of today’s episode and it inspires you to be a little curious about your own mindset! For more info about working with me, head to the Moovers n Shakers Music website! Professionals can wear rainbow tutu's too!

Episode 30: Professionals can wear rainbow tutu’s too! In this week’s episode I am sharing some key takeaways after having spent an amazing day surrounded by passionate, educated and inspiring business-women. The Tasmanian Business Women’s Conference opened up a very lively can of worms for me in terms of confidence, motivation and opportunities to collaborate and connect with other passionate entrepreneurs. For the most part, Speakers focussed on  mindset and my key takeaways were:Taking the time to listen to your own story and own whatever that looks like! The danger of falling into the ‘comparison trap’ It’s ok - and healthy - to embrace new seasons of growth’ by rewriting stories and beliefs that no longer define the best version of yourselfTapping into your intuition and really trusting yourself as the CEO of your own life!Knowing your numbers, tracking them and setting intentional goals“Being a professional” comes in many shapes and sizes and everyone’s story is unique! Also I mention an exciting week ahead for Chris n Filly Functional Medicine as they open doors for the Ending Body Burnout Method which I have recently completed myself with truly transformative results in my personal and professional health and wellbeing! You can find out more by registering for the FREE education week here (hurry it’s already open!): Free Coaching and education weekOr going directly to the EBB method page here: Ending Body Burnout Method***For listeners interested in training options (live or online) with me, head to the Moovers n Shakers Music websiteOr you know what would be much easier and quicker? Episode 26: Tune in to...YOU!

EPISODE 26: Tune in to…You!This week on the Podcast I want to continue the conversation around mindset and using music as a regulation tool. I often talk about the importance of being able to ‘connect’ with yourself first and foremost before you can deeply connect with others - being a musician and a bit of a word-nerd, it makes me so happy that I can use the term “TUNE IN” to express this idea!!! Just like when we are ‘tuned in’ to a radio station we are able to hear clearly what is being communicated; so too we are more able to ‘hear’ clearly the messages from our body, inner self and heart when we are tuned in to ourselves. It means we are more likely to actively seek out tools and strategies to maintain a good, healthy relationship with ourselves-  and that in turn extends to the relationships we have with others. If you’re curious to find out more about this and you’re around the NorthWest coast of Tasmania on April 6th make sure you’ve got your ticket to the Mini-Retreat I’m holding at the beautiful ‘Two Oaks’ in Somerset. It’s going to be a magical morning of ‘tuning in to you’ with Music, Movement and Mindfulness.Book tickets here Please share the episode with your friends, colleagues and family  members, and tag me on socials @mooversnshakersmusic Click here to find out more about the Routines to Rituals online, on-demand workshopClick here to go to the Moovers n Shakers Music websiteLove Music. Episode 25: How do you use Music in your life?

Music has ALWAYS been in my life - listening to my mother play piano while she was pregnant with me, starting classical piano lessons and performing from the age of 5, singing in choirs and backing vocals for various bands. My relationship with music has grown and changed over the decades, but would you believe that I never actually felt deeply 'confident' and 'connected' to music until I hit my forties?!Might sound counter-intuitive but Listen in to find out why...!In this episode I also put out a call to anyone who would like to be a guest on the show - or contribute their musical story in writing if you're not keen on having a chat. The offer is open to anyone, but I'd love to hear from the 'everyday person' not necessarily someone who identifies as a 'musician'  but still loves and uses music, because I think it's important we debunk this myth that a musical person is one who can sing in tune or play an instrument proficiently. Musicality is within us all - we ALL have a musical bone, I am certain of that.Send me an email at this address if you're interested in sharing your [email protected] if you'd like to join me for a magical "New Moon Mini-Retreat" next month here's the link :Book tickets here Please share the episode with your friends, colleagues and family  members, and tag me on socials @mooversnshakersmusic Click here to find out more about the Routines to Rituals online, on-demand workshopClick here to go to the Moovers n Shakers Music websiteLove Music. Do you want to be part of my BETA course?

Episode 23: Do you want to be part of my BETA course? What’s a BETA course you ask?! Well, put simply it’s a ‘discounted first test run’ of a course with a small amount of selected students.  Students who enrol are not only completing the content but they are also contributing their feedback on all aspects of the course -  the design, content, delivery and even tech aspects! So for a first-time course creator like me, the feedback I get is GOLD…yep, it really is GOLD. It means that when I launch the course to the general public, any bumps will be smoothed out and I can be confident that the content and delivery is well designed to optimise student success.I believe whole-heartedly in the value of this course that I have created: it is the culmination of all my studies, insights and work experience across a variety of educational settings for the past 25 years. AND of course, my experiences as a parent of two young boys. BUT I’m also very aware that other people may not see things as clearly as me. Because we all learn in our unique way, and we all, as educators, are working within unique learning environments. If  this sparks your interest you can register to apply as a BETA student using the link below.  You’ll then get an invitation to jump on a quick information call with me to go over the details, answer any questions you have and decide where to go from there!https://www.mooversnshakersmusic.com.au/musicmindset Please share the episode with your friends, colleagues and family  members, and tag me on socials @mooversnshakersmusic Click here to find out more about the Routines to Rituals online, on-demand workshopClick here to go to the Moovers n Shakers Music websiteLove Music. Flipping Routines into Rituals

Episode 22: Flipping Routines into RitualsI’m all about making life SIMPLE, JOYFUL and CONNECTED as much as possible these days. I don’t want to just GET BY in life and be an onlooker in my own journey. Don’t get me wrong - this doesn’t mean that everyday life is all rainbows and unicorns!!What I want to practise each day, and help my children and students to practise is “Having a positive attitude, mindset, outlook” (whatever term resonates with you). To practice ‘flipping’ the story around Routines being ‘suffocating, stressful, too restrictive’ and instead incorporating the sense of meaning and purpose that comes with Rituals. To turn Routines into Rituals! Because there’s magical moments even in the most ‘tiresome’ or ‘boring’ of daily routines and chores…and I‘m determined to keep my mind and heart open and curious to these moments. And I believe very strongly that I can support Educators and teachers working in the Early Years space to look out for these moments too. Those working with and caring for young children have a fantastic opportunity to use Musical and Mindfulness elements in their daily routines and transitions to create learning environments that have meaning, purpose, great connection and joy. It's what motivates me to keep presenting the online workshop on Thursday 22nd February: “ROUTINES to RITUALS: Using Music & Mindfulness to create calm, connected transitions”. How Music invites connection and belonging

EPISODE 20: How Music invites Connection and Belonging In this week’s episode, I talk about how shared musical experiences bring people together to connect and create a sense of belonging. My family and I are only just coming down from a massive high after an amazing two weeks jam-packed with musical fun and magic. Episode 14: New Moon, New beginnings

PODCAST EPISODE 14: New moon, new beginnings! This week on the Music & Mindset podcast I talk about the importance of making time for reflection, rest and connection with self and community. I attended a wellness retreat over the weekend and felt so grateful for this opportunity to do exactly that! It’s perfect timing with the “New Moon” cycle - this is a time when the moon is at it’s darkest and you can barely see it in the sky, even on a clear evening! It is a wonderful time to preserve your energy, go inward and reflect on where you’ve been, so that you can start thinking about new projects, new garden plantings, new habits and harness the energy of the growing moon. My dad loved working outdoors and was an avid gardener. I found out after my dad passed away, that he planted ‘by the moon’ as did his own father! I’ve since met so many other gardeners and farmers that plan their planting and harvesting cycles ‘in synch’ with natural cycles in order to maximise success!Talking about natural cycles and success, I also give you a sneak peek at my upcoming planning workshop (online) that I am organising for 30th November 2023. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the year so far, and look ahead at your 2024 planning so you can learn effective and practical ways to habit-stack Musical learning and Mindfulness onto your daily routines to enhance learning, boost resilience, create calm and smooth transitions and foster secure, respectful relationships.I’m really excited to be presenting this online workshop and will be offering discounted tickets to those who join the waitlist: you can find out more and join the waitlist by clicking the link below:https://www.mooversnshakersmusic.com.au/plan2024 Please share the episode with your friends, colleagues and family  members, and tag me on socials @mooversnshakersmusic Click here to find out more about the Routines to Rituals online, on-demand workshopClick here to go to the Moovers n Shakers Music websiteLove Music. Episode 9: Why ALL pre-schoolers need Musical Learning!

EPISODE 9: “Why ALL pre-schoolers need Musical Learning” with Dr Anita CollinsI am thrilled to have a special guest joining us this week! Dr Anita Collins is an award-winning educator, researcher and writer in the field of brain development and music learning. One of Anita’s talents is translating the Neuroscience research to the everyday parent, teacher and student - a skill she is internationally recognised for. Anita helps people understand WHY and HOW Musically trained children have better language and communication skillscan focus for longerbetter able to control their own emotional responsesbetter working and long-term memory systems. These enhancements then support higher levels of overall academic achievement, motivation, stress management, self-regulation and awareness. And what I find particularly exciting as an Early Childhood professional, is all the current research coming out about how music learning has been found to improve neural communication issues associated with autism, ADHD, dyslexia and reading and language learning delays. In this episode we delve intoSinging for connection and bondingPop culture and social media influences on our beliefs of what a ‘musical person’ isBeat-keeping as a diagnostic tool for ‘early reading skills’As Anita says there’s alot of “emotional scars.. particularly around music and music education and how people see themselves as musical beings.. Which then come out in the next generation…so I think there's a lot of different things that feed into those beliefs and my approach is to just nudge those and question those, and help people start to shift their understanding and beliefs around music education”.You can connect with Dr Anita Collins via these links: www.anitacollinsmusic.comwww.biggerbetterbrains.comGreat reads: The Musical AdvantageThe Lullaby EffectTedX talkPlease share the episode with your friends, colleagues and family  members, and tag me on socials @mooversnshakersmusic Click here to find out more about the Routines to Rituals online, on-demand workshopClick here to go to the Moovers n Shakers Music websiteLove Music. EPISODE 7: Breathe back your Calm!

EPISODE 7: Breathe back your Calm! This week I want to talk to you about emotional regulation and looking after your Mental Health. Not just because RuOK? Day is coming up, as is Mental Health awareness week, but because more and more I hear of, and observe mental health and wellbeing being a real challenge for many educators and carers. And I want to help!!I know as an early educator and parent myself, it can sometimes be tricky to connect with children - to respond rather than react - when they’re experiencing big emotions or challenging behaviours, especially if you’re feeling tired or stressed yourself! We've all been there - educating and caring for young children can be a tough gig sometimes! But if we want to be able to co-regulate and build resilient, emotionally intelligent children, we must first be able to self-regulate.Did you know that something as simple as breathing can help to switch off your internal 'anxiety/stress/anger' system and activate your 'rest and relax' system so that you can respond rather than react to stressful situations? I think focussed breathing is one of the most effective and simple tools we can easily bring into our daily routines no matter what age. That’s why I created the infographic as a quick guide for educators, parents and carers. You can download it below. And that’s why I want to chat about it on today’s episode…So get comfy and let’s tune in!Key take-aways from this episode: >>Please look after your own mental health!!! Why teach Mindfulness in Early childhood?

Episode #5: Why teach Mindfulness in Early childhood? In this week's episode I want to continue the chat about Mindfulness but this time through a lens of “Early Intervention”. Sadly we know that statistics are on the rise for childhood mental disorders and even without the research I think we can all agree that everyone’s mental health and wellbeing - especially children’s - has taken a real hit post-Covid times. I don’t throw that term around as tokenistic or as a trend - I really believe in generations to come, when we look back at this point in history (as with all other significant historical events) we will see a clear divide in sociological behaviours, human development, scientific and technological advances - all the ‘goings-on in the world” as ‘pre-Covid’ and ‘post-Covid’. You can read more about that in my latest Blog here. But for the purpose of this episode, I’ll talk about why teaching Mindfulness practices needs to be as much a part of the early childhood curriculum as pre-literacy, pre-numeracy, and all the other ‘traditional’ learning areas. And of course, it wouldn’t be a complete conversation without bringing the element of Musical learning into it, cause you know how much that supercharges the brain!Oh, and just like last week, make sure you stick around to the end of the episode as we’ll finish with a few minutes of breathing to the magical sounds of the Tank drum! I received some really lovely feedback with how helpful that was, so I’ll make an effort to include a little breathing practice more often  (you can see me as your accountability buddy if you like!)As always, your feedback, reviews and sharing is very much appreciated so…don’t be shy! Episode 4: MINDFULNESS HACKS!

Episode 4: MINDFULNESS HACKS!In this week's episode I want to talk about Mindfulness and some of the ways we can bring this practice into our daily routine, on a physical level, spiritual level and mental level. Full disclosure - this episode has been inspired by my own past week of …let’s just say…letting my own mindfulness practices slip! After pushing myself a little too hard on the work front, I’ve had a timely reminder to seek balance with my family and down-time in nature, and to make sure I’m “practising what I preach!” I wonder what Mindfulness looks like to you?>We’ll talk about how mindfulness doesn’t always have to be meditating on a yoga mat - although that is very helpful to many! It can be as simple as focussing on your breathing, taking a few moments out of your day to stretch, listen to or play music, eat your lunch out in the sunshine! We’ll also talk about how listening to and playing music has proven benefits to boost mood and mental wellbeing.>Make sure you stick around to the end of this episode as we’ll finish with a few minutes of breathing to the magical sounds of the Tank drum!P.S That’s the topic of my next Webinar coming up in a couple of weeks!
