M17: Samuel Meharry And The Goodness Of A Newly Freed Family
In 1826, young salt trader Samuel Meharry found himself stranded in a swamp on the Kentucky-Tennessee border. In gratitude, Meharry made a promise: “I have no money, but when I can, I shall do something for your race.”Fifty years later, he and his brothers fulfilled that vow by founding Meharry Medical College, the first medical school in the South for Black students. F14: School Without Social Media And Smartphones
We've all had that gut feeling—something isn’t right, but we second-guess ourselves. Cumberland Community School in East London didn’t wait for years of studies to confirm what they already knew: smartphones were hurting student focus. In 2023, they encouraged students to delete social media apps during their exam months. The results? Higher grades, better engagement, and improved focus. By 2024, their progress scores jumped, sparking nationwide policy changes. Research confirms what our intuition told us—just having a smartphone nearby drains cognitive power. The data suggests, if your state hasn't already, it’s time to rethink the role of smartphones in our education systems.Welcome to My Good Three Podcast: Good Stories For A Better WeekClick here for a list of episodes, transcripts, and show notes. F13: Rebuilding Trust In One Another
Trust is easier to lose than to gain—whether in personal relationships, business networks, or with your team. A growing lack of trust in each other and our institutions is fueled by politics, social media, and misinformation. But when things go wrong, we’re not doomed. If trust is lost, according to trust expert Rachel Botsman, and her new book, How To Trust and Be Trusted, the key to rebuilding trust lies in meaningful, sometimes uncomfortable conversations. Studies show that nearly 60% of people recognize the need to improve trust, but many avoid the tough talks. By addressing issues directly, fostering connection, and showing respect, trust can be restored. While it seems obvious, it’s seldom practiced, but it goes a long way in rebuilding the bridge that was once there. In the 1950s, there was a major crisis in the auto industry. Engines had become more powerful, drivers were reaching higher speeds, and vehicular deaths skyrocketed. M11: The Courage To Be Captured
There’s no shortage of heroic stories from World War II. However, there’s one story many people don’t know. It was finally cleared to be released to the public by the Polish Archives in the 1990s, and it uniquely captures the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness of the Allied effort. Disguised as a Jewish man, underground Polish Army officer Witold Pilecki was intentionally captured in order to get inside the Nazi’s new operation at an old Army barracks in Poland. His mission was to gather intelligence on what was happening inside the barracks and to help the Jewish prisoners build a support network. What he didn’t know then was this old Army barracks would soon become one of the deadliest concentration camps in Europe; a camp known as Auschwitz. This is a story that will remind us all how lucky we are to have our freedom, and all because of the heroism of people like Witold Pilecki.Welcome to My Good Three Podcast: Good Stories For A Better WeekClick here for a list of Episodes.Check out our websiteFor all of our social media, find us @mygoodthreeContact the host: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. Thanksgiving Week Compilation Episode - Best Of MondaysEpisode M1: Heroes In The Rows Around UsWe start My Good Three off with a story about people who risked their lives to keep others safe. This is the story about the sacrifice that the passengers of UA Flight 93 made on September 11th, 2001.It centers on Todd Beamer, and the call he made to the Airphone operator just before he and the other passengers stormed the cockpit and prevented the airplane, which had been taken over by hijackers, from crashing into another Washington D.C. building. There are many things to be thankful for, but on this anniversary of September 11th, my 11-year-old son and I talked about the incredible sacrifice these passengers made to protect our way of life.Episode M3: Do We Need A President With CharacterFormer President Donald J. Trump. Vice President Kamala Harris. As we very quickly approach the 2024 Presidential Election Day, and the many policy differences, personality differences, and a list of promises and warnings are swirling around in our heads, it’s worth taking a moment to look at our first U.S. President, George Washington. We’ll quickly examine the core trait that defined his service, the impact that had on all of us, and why we should be thankful.Episode M5: The Fight To VoteAre you voting for Donald Trump or Kamala Harris? Or does your vote even matter? As we enter Election Day, questioning whether it’s worth disrupting our day to vote is somewhat normal. In this pre-election episode, we look back at the history of voting rights and just how much people sacrificed so we can freely walk into a polling station and cast our votes. F7: Perception Is Reality When It Comes To Age
Do you think much about aging? Further yet, do you think about yourself as an older person? What do you envision, both physically and cognitively? A new study tells us that how we perceive aging, as well as how we perceive our own cognition as we age, actually matters. The findings will have you thinking a bit differently about how you judge yourself and your mental capacity, because perception is reality, much more than we originally thought. Hosted on Acast. W7: A Lesson In Perspective From Collettey's Cookies
It’s easy to start to feel sorry for yourself when things aren’t going your way. Sometimes the best way to snap out of it, is to take a look at someone else pushing through adversity larger than yours, and thriving. This Wednesday’s episode is about the perspective I gained from learning about Collettey’s Cookies, and the grit and determination of the woman behind the brand. Not only is she thriving, but she’s also lifting up other people as she bakes. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

M7: Running Past Unfairness
What would you do if you trained your entire life to achieve a goal, and then in the moment you were about to reach your goal, someone unfairly ruined it? What would you do? This is an incredible story of someone who pushed back against the emotion of the moment, and gracefully accepted that he was good enough…even though what he achieved wasn’t what it could have been. This is the story of Vanderlei De Lima and his quest for gold at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

F6: Math Mishap A Win For Environment
Normally math mistakes are a bad thing, and they result in terrible news…planes crash, bridges collapse, and backyard warriors measure and cut one too few fence posts. This is a case of a mathematics error that turns out to be fantastic news, a mistake found by environmental scientists at Cornell University. What they found will lead much more accurate forecasts of the warming of our planet…and it turns out, it’s better news than we could have imagined. Hosted on Acast. W6: The Candy Kids Are All Right
After Amy Schmitt of Woodhaven, Michigan, rushed her son Jacob to the hospital for a medical emergency, she learned that they would need to stay in the hospital for several days, including for one of their favorite days of the year, Halloween. She had the wherewithal to find time to rush home to place a sign in front of the house saying they were at the hospital and there was no candy, so kids wouldn’t be disappointed when nobody answered the door during trick or treating. What happened next could challenge any negative narratives you may have about kids these days. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

M6: Do You Really Know A Veteran?
I had planned to honor veterans today with a story or two about heroic veterans, but I changed my mind. It’s impossible to celebrate Veteran’s Day without mentioning the immense challenge we face in dealing with veteran suicides. I did hesitate talking about it, since there are some studies saying that we may be making it worse by consistently talking about the issue, but I have to think not talking about is worse. To call what is happening among post-9/11 warfighters a mental health crisis isn’t quite capturing the severity of the issue; what we’re dealing with is a full-blown epidemic. In this episode I briefly share the statistics, and compel listeners to do more than just donate to a veterans cause this Veteran’s Day. F4: Cynicism Is Not Trustworthy
Do you feel like you’re cynical, and there’s nothing you can do to change it? If so, there’s good news. Changing is much easier and faster than you think, and the benefits of being less cynical are worth fighting for. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be an idealist, just make some small changes and prepare to see your future in a brighter light. In this episode I reference findings from Dr. Jamil Zaki, Director of the Social Neuroscience Lab at Stanford University, which he shares in his new book, Hope For Cynics. Hosted on Acast. W4: Finding A Family's Future In An Envelope
Not everyone keeps their savings in a bank account. In some cultures, it’s customary to keep it in cash and carry it with you. Van Ha, originally from Vietnam, is a woman in her 70s who keeps her savings with her at all times in an envelope. Well, she did, until a few months ago, she lost it one afternoon while shopping at a Boston-area Market Basket. Luckily, she was in good hands. This story reminds us that we should believe in the people around us to do the right thing. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

M4: The Game Of Monopoly
Did you know the game of Monopoly was invented for political reasons in order to teach the dangers of capitalism in real estate? I dive into the roots of the game, the transition, and how it ended up in the form it is today. No matter the original intent, it’s still fun to have a board game that gives us a chance to slip into a cut-throat mindset, bankrupt our loved ones, and dominate the real estate landscape - so we can Own It All.... F3: We Can Lift A Whale
Saving the Blue Whale is something I haven’t thought much about. It wasn’t until I learned about how close the largest animal to ever roam the earth (larger than dinosaurs) came to extinction recently, because of humans, that I stopped to pay attention. The real magic in this story, is how humans brought the Blue Whale species back - and what that means about our power and our future, as a human species, when we work together. Hosted on Acast. W3: When A Bus Driver Picks Up The Community
You never know when you’re going to make an impact on someone, and at the same time, on a community. Larry Farrish, Jr., a bus driver for Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Kentucky did just that when he went way out of his way to help one of the kids on his bus. Mr. Larry, as the kids call him, didn’t think much of it, but very quickly news spread, and two days later, they were on the Today Show. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
