Police Misconduct: How Public Accountability was Terminated in Alameda County

In this episode, host Pamela Price sits down with Alex Feigen Fasteau, a seasoned veteran prosecutor with over two decades of experience in San Francisco and Alameda County. Together, they pull back the curtain on the complexities of the justice system, from prosecuting economic crimes and sexual assault to the high-stakes work of the Public Accountability Unit. Feigan Fasteau shares how he was summarily fired by the interim appointed District Attorney less than two weeks after she took office, and there was no transition of the cases the Public Accountability Unit was handling for two years. In this episode, we discuss:The Opportunity: What drives a 20-year San Francisco prosecutor to join the Alameda County DA’s office? The Transition:  How Feigen Fasteau and anyone with less than a year tenure was fired by the interim appointed District Attorney without any consideration of their work or their worth to the people of Alameda County.Systemic Issues: Addressing the "criminalization of poverty" and systemic racism from within the prosecutor's office.Police Accountability: The logistical and legal hurdles of charging peace officers, including the reality of "qualified immunity" and the need for independent investigations. The Maurice Monk Case: A look into the supervision of high-profile cases involving in-custody deaths and public records. The "Blue Wall": The challenges of finding independent officers willing to sign affidavits against their own.Alex shares his unique journey from being hired by Kamala Harris to becoming the Director of Public Accountability for Alameda County and now, transitioning into civil rights law.#PamelaPrice #JusticeSystem #PoliceAccountability #PublicAccountability #LegalTalk #DistrictAttorney #CriminalJustice #CivilRights #AlamedaCounty #Unfiltered #LawAndOrder #RealTalkSupport the show

Is Oakland Next on Trump's Hit List?

Oakland is in Donald Trump’s crosshairs. He’s planning to send the National Guard into our streets any day now. He did it in LA, he did it in DC.We are on his list of “very bad” cities that he intends to liberate from the Democrats. The Trump Administration is NOT playing by the rules and it's time to take his threats seriously. So, how did we get here? For the past 2 years, the right wing doom loopers spent so much time and money fearmongering, trashing our city and tearing us down, that it is no wonder Trump can say “we’re so far gone” we don’t even merit a mention.Even as we saw a citywide decline in violent crime in Oakland, including homicides, robberies and carjackings that started in 2024 before the infamous recalls, the doom loopers keep spreading their lies because it served a political purpose. The Oakland NAACP, the Oakland Police Officers Association (OPOA), Empower Oakland, Save Alameda For Everyone (SAFE), their paid agents, bots and provocateurs, can’t take it back now. Their mayoral candidate Loren Taylor, like Trump, campaigned on a law-and-order platform. It was that type of Trump-like right wing rhetoric that Oaklanders rejected when we elected Barbara Lee, but now, we must reap what they sowed. No wonder Trump is targeting us.Oaklanders need to reject the influence and doom loop narrative of out-of-town billionaires and fascists and tell the world that Oakland is a great city, and that our immigrants, documented and undocumented, bring the cultural diversity that is our strength.Support the show

Either You Believe in the Constitution or You Don’t

A Culture of Cheating and LiesIn 2024, as the Alameda County District Attorney, my team and I uncovered and exposed a 30-year history of unethical prosecutorial misconduct in the Alameda County District Attorney’s office in prosecuting death penalty cases. In February 2025, the new tough-on-crime District Attorney stopped the efforts to address the constitutional crisis before she was actually sworn in and while she was still a sitting judge. After she officially became the DA, Ursula Jones Dickson took the position that there is no remedy for the documented constitutional violations and is fighting to keep the death penalty in the remaining 14 cases that were in the process of being resentenced when I left the office.Hence, the question, does she believe in the Constitution?Brian Pomerantz Has the ReceiptsThe juror notes discovered in the files of Alameda County prosecutors clearly show that Black and Jewish jurors were targeted to be kicked off of death penalty juries, under the leadership of District Attorneys Tom Orloff, Nancy O’Malley and John J. Meehan. In the words of United States District Court Judge Vincent Chhabria on April 22, 2024, These notes - especially when considered in conjunction with evidence presented in other cases - constitute strong evidence that, in prior decades, prosecutors from the office were engaged in a pattern of serious misconduct, automatically excluding Jewish and African American jurors in death penalty cases. Brian Pomerantz was lead counsel in three Alameda County capital cases and in 2024, he and Ann-Kathryn Tria were appointed as special settlement counsel in ten capital cases in Alameda. For their work in these cases, Brian and Ann were awarded the Daily Journal's prestigious CLAY (California Lawyer of the Year) Award in May 2025.In Southern California, Los Angeles is also grappling with the resentencing case of the Menendez brothers. In 2023, the Menendez brothers presented new evidence that their father had raped another male child and a letter that 17-year-old Erik wrote to a cousin eight months before the murders detailing his father’s sexual abuse. In October 2024, nearly 20 family members, including their mother’s sister, urged Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon to resentence them. On October 24, 2024, DA Gascon announced his decision to resentence both brothers to 50 years to life which would make them eligible for parole. In May 2025, the Court overruled the objections of the new tough-on-crime DA and followed DA Gascon's recommendations. This episode covers:what is the remedy for constitutional violations caused by prosecutorial misconduct and cheating to get a conviction in criminal casesshould the appointed tough-on-crime prosecutor in Alameda County be allowed to stop the resentencing processes even before she took the oath of office, or turn a blind eye to a pattern of serious misconduct based on racism and anti-Semitismwhat has been the result of the efforts by the elected tough-on-crime prosecutor in Los Angeles to fight against the release of the Menendez’ brotherswhat will happen to the Menendez brothers at their upcoming parole hearing now that there is new evidence of sexual abuse by their fatherwhat does California’s parole release sSupport the show

Loyalty, Legacy & Loving Oakland: Mistah F.A.B.'s Playground

“You never know how tall a giant is when you’re standing next to him.” That’s a reflection from Oakland’s Hometown Hero Mistah F.A.B. on his childhood friend, filmmaker extraordinaire Ryan Coogler, but it rings just as true for Mistah F.A.B. himself. Mistah F.A.B. is a multi-platinum songwriter and record producer, a successful entrepreneur, the owner of Dope Era, a clothing line, streetwear boutique and community hub and Dezi, a lounge space, both in downtown Oakland, the convener of Thug (Teaching, Healing, Uniting & Guiding) Therapy, philanthropist and community activist. He’s been profiled in Forbes Magazine, been given the key to the City of Oakland in 2014 and has more than 403,000 followers on Instagram. In an insightful and dynamic interview, Mistah F.A.B. talks about his love for Oakland, his vision for our future, and his journey from the playground and hyphy roots to healing vibes. His advice to our community: never leave the playground because that’s where your innocence was real and your dreams were born. This episode also argues that California District Attorneys must pair reentry with resentencing. Too often, the reentry process is left to depend solely on the minimal resources of a family struggling to survive in under-resourced communities, more often than not, on the shoulders of a Black mother. Returning citizens are 10 times more likely to be homeless than the general population. The gaps are even greater when a person is released from the local County jail facility at the end of a case without sufficient time to plan for a successful reentry. As Alameda County District Attorney, I saw too many cases where a person served their entire sentence in the Santa Rita County Jail and was released into our community with no plan, preparation or support.Too often, we saw folks who had serious mental health issues while they were incarcerated in Santa Rita, and those issues were no better when they were released. It is not difficult to understand why pairing reentry with resentencing is essential to protect public safety. Without a carefully vetted reentry plan and programmatic support, folks released directly from Santa Rita County Jail into the community may easily become a potential danger to public safety.During my time as Alameda County District Attorney, we created a Pilot reentry commission in partnership with community organizations and took on the task of assessing resentencing and reentry plans from the lens of public safety and successful reintegration into the community. Our DA-sponsored reentry unit for resentenced returning citizens was highly successful, but the new tough-on-crime DA - Ursula Jones Dickson - stopped all resentencing cases and disbanded the reentry unit as soon as she was appointed by the BOS. The new administration does not believe in second chances. Support the show

The Job of the Elected Prosecutor

What happens when politics “trumps” public safety? The double standard that gives “tough on crime” prosecutors the benefit of the doubt vs. the extreme criticisms of reformers has real human consequences. Certain people are protected, and others are not. Our guest this week on Pamela Price Unfiltered is the gifted Chesa Boudin, former San Francisco District Attorney and, now the founding Executive Director of Berkeley’s Criminal Law & Justice Center, a policy and advocacy hub.Chesa and Pamela have a frank conversation about prosecutorial discretion, the death penalty cases in Alameda County and the cover-up by old school prosecutors, and how the double standard in matters of justice is reflected nationally in the right-wing attacks on the use of universal injunctions. Legally Speaking breaks down the significance of the Supreme Court's decision in Trump v. OVIS: The Future of News - On A Mission to End Fake News

In the world of information overload, we hear a multitude of lies on the news everyday. It is true: ‘A lie will go round the world while truth is pulling its boots on.’In December 2021, Linton Johnson, the founder and Chief Visionary Officer of OVIS, launched the world’s first blockchain powered news network, which allows everyday people to end fake news by incentivizing the truth. OVIS is the antidote to "fake news."We also open the conversation on what a member of my team at the DA’s office in 2023 called telelievision (tele-lie-vision), a new term for the biased media coverage of our work. The lack of objectivity and bias displayed by TV anchors and other media actors was blatantly and painfully obvious. So, people kept asking us: Why Can't You Sue Them? Illegal Quotas & Corporate Crimes in Trump's America

What happens in America in 2025 when the President seizes control of the national law enforcement apparatus to violate the Constitution? The people resist.Across the country, the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown has escalated based on quotas for arrest that feel more like a military operation than law enforcement. From Chicago to Los Angeles, the National Guard has joined ICE and the Dept. of Homeland Security to seize immigrants and silence protesters. Trump is ignoring Court orders and sending planeloads of immigrants illegally to Venezuela while threatening to send Americans there too. Trump's historic and unhinged use of the Alien Enemies Act has incited Americans everywhere to action. Locally, the new Alameda County DA is giving corporations a pass and ignored the public health advocates - like Ms. Margaret Gordon - who have been on the frontlines of the fight for environmental justice for decades. Ms. Margaret speaks out about the DA's "clueless" decision to dismiss a criminal grand jury indictment against a longtime major polluter in the San Francisco Bay Area.Support the show
