Pascendi Dominici Gregis (On the Errors of the Modernists)
by Pope St Pius X
In his brief but impactful pontificate from 1903 to 1914, Pope Pius X dedicated himself to confronting the burgeoning tide of secularism that characterized the early Twentieth century. Rejecting the more liberal stance of his predecessor, Leo XIII, Pius X instead embraced the stringent doctrinal principles set forth by Pope Pius IX in the Syllabus of Errors (1864). He pinpointed Modernism as the fundamental threat to the Catholic Churchs influence—a philosophical and artistic movement that gained traction in the late Nineteenth Century. His most significant Encyclical, Pascendi Dominici Gregis (On the Errors of the Modernists), published in 1907, famously declares that Modernism is the synthesis of all heresies. This important letter also features a comprehensive appendix that traces the evolution of modernistic thought and counters the arguments of its most prominent advocates.
