The Berlin Blockade and the Deutschmark

The Berlin Blockade started in June 1948, but its roots were from the failure of the Big Three, United States, Soviet Union, and United Kingdom to reach an agreement for common occupation goals in a post-war occupied Germany. Ideology differences about guaranteed no agreement, but pretending to be unified or leaving questions to be answered later guaranteed that there would be plenty of fuel to support Cold War flash points. China’s Strategic Maneuvers: The SCO Summit and Victory Day Parade

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conducted a summit in Tianjin, northern China, on August 31-September 1, 2025. This event coincided with the China Victory Day Parade in Beijing on September 3, which commemorated the 80th anniversary of the conclusion of World War II and Japan's defeat. The scheduling of these two key events allowed China's leadership to receive global dignitaries while also emphasizing the country's presence on the international stage. Various opposition political groups, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and media outlets took use of the opportunity to accentuate their anti-Western views, notably those directed at the United States, which were fanned by remarks by Chinese hosts. Unfortunately, the hyperbole and incessant cacophony in mainstream media coverage have masked the meeting's broader context, particularly China's obstacles and the actual outcomes of this Chinese influence campaign. Please support me through Patreon, Buy Me A Coffee or Ko-Fi.PatreonBuy Me A CoffeeKo-Fi This is a public episode. Chinese Nuclear Buildup

The People’s Republic of China joined the nuclear club on October 16, 1964, when it detonated a 22-kiloton nuclear device at its Lop Nur test site as part of Project 596. The bomb utilized 15 kilograms of weapons-grade Uranium-235, producing an explosive yield roughly equivalent to the U.S. “Fat Man” nuclear weapon dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, in August 1945. The Chinese nuclear program was initially supported by the Soviet Union; however, the Soviets withdrew their assistance and advisors in 1960 due to the Soviet-Sino split that year. Under Mao Zedong, the Chinese continued the program, leveraging the information, education, and equipment left behind by the Soviets to independently develop the bomb. China's subsequent nuclear policy diverged from the nuclear arms race between the Soviet Union and the United States that intensified in the 1960s and 1970s. However, it now appears that China is pursuing a nuclear weapons buildup to challenge the dominance of the U.S. and Russia.Research or support me through Patreon, Buy Me A Coffee or Ko-Fi.PatreonBuy Me A CoffeeKo-Fi This is a public episode. Project Gemini: The Shoehorn Space Program

Project Mercury, from 1958 to 1963, led to the first crewed space voyage on May 5, 1961. President John Kennedy told Congress on May 25, 1961, that the U.S. will place a man on the Moon and return him safely to Earth before the end of the decade. This ambitious aim would be fewer than nine years after the U.S. put a man in space for 15 minutes and 28 seconds. After the Soviet launch of Sputnik in October 1957, the space race became a race to the Moon between the US and the USSR. After Kennedy's statement, Project Apollo began in 1961. Mercury and Apollo failed to meet Moon-reach challenges. This required a new program to bridge Mercury's capability gap and Apollo's knowledge gap. This program was Project Gemini. German and Japanese Recruitment Challenges

Japan and Germany were the main Axis forces during World War II, but both nations have subsequently become economic superpowers and essential components of the Western alliance in Europe and the Pacific. In order to tackle the present security issues in their respective regions, both countries this month announced new goals for their military buildups. The goal of the projected increases will establish in both nations their biggest military forces since World War II. These new policies of Germany and Japan will see that both will have difficulties reaching their defense manpower targets, despite their lofty aspirations.Research or support me through Patreon, Buy Me A Coffee or Ko-Fi.PatreonBuy Me A CoffeeKo-Fi This is a public episode. Vested Interests in Prolonging the Ukraine War

US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced a new arms sale to Ukraine to support its ongoing conflict with Russia. The sale allows European countries to purchase weapons and transfer them to Ukraine, and includes a 50-day deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire. However, the deadline faces international opposition, with nations like North Korea and China willing to help Russia resist sanctions and continue the conflict.Research or support me through Patreon, Buy Me A Coffee or Ko-Fi.PatreonBuy Me A CoffeeKo-Fi This is a public episode. Missile Defense and the Strategic Dilemma

Missile defense has become a significant topic for military planners and politicians due to conflicts in the Middle East and the Ukraine War. Israel has been the focal point, while Europe is developing its own anti-missile system, the European Sky Shield Initiative. The United States is working on creating the Golden Dome system to protect itself. The first anti-missile system was the U.S. Army Nike Hercules, developed in 1958. The Soviet Union developed its first anti-missile system in 1956, leading to the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty. The strategic dilemma of overcoming a defensive system with greater offensive capabilities remains unresolved, even with advanced technology. The U.S. continued its pursuit of missile defense, pursuing various anti-missile systems, including the Ground Based Mid-Course Defense (GMD) system, THAAD, Patriot PAC-2 and PAC-3 missiles, and Aegis-based SM-3 and SM-6 missiles. The U.S. has been working on developing integrated missile defense systems, but the strategic dilemmas from the 1950s to 1970s remain unresolved. Israel has established an integrated missile defense system, while the U.S. has deployed various weapons with anti-missile capabilities. Despite advancements in technology, advanced anti-missile interceptors are expensive and have longer production times compared to standard intermediate and long-range missiles. The solution to countering missile defense lies in increasing offensive capabilities to overwhelm the system. The Golden Dome and European Sky Shield Initiative are expected to cost more than $175 billion, and the U.S. and Europe may want to focus on effective civil defense, infrastructure hardening, and increased offensive capabilities for deterrence rather than a system that nearly guarantees a strategic arms race. Spanish Fly: Addendum

The NATO leaders summit in The Hague concluded on June 25, 2025, with the primary focus on adopting new NATO spending targets, as insisted upon by US President Donald Trump. The organization agreed to raise its members' GDP defense requirement from 2% to 5%, with 3.5% allocated to hard defense spending and 1.5% for defense-related expenditures. However, Spain, which consistently ranks low in defense spending within NATO, did not agree to the new target. The agreement extends until 2035, with a review scheduled for 2030. The 2030 check-in could potentially lead to changes in requirements, with President Trump and Rutte no longer in power. The 5% target without a compliance mechanism may not prove more successful, especially once "daddy" exits the world stage. This is a public episode. Spanish Fly

The annual NATO leaders' summit in The Hague, Netherlands, is set to focus on increasing defense spending, a priority for both President Trump and Secretary Rutte. However, the goal seems to be in doubt due to President Trump's announcement of the Asian pivot, which prioritizes Asia over European defense. The Ukraine War persists, and NATO has little to show for its efforts, with a significant portion of the defense budget allocated to military aid for Ukraine. The European Union and member states need to increase military defense spending for deterrence and to position European countries at the forefront of defense and peacekeeping efforts. Secretary Rutte's proposed spending goals call for NATO to increase its defense spending from 2% of GDP to 5% of GDP. However, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed disapproval of the plan, stating that it would be "unreasonable" and "unproductive." This could undermine NATO and create a division within the alliance concerning its commitment.Research or support me through Patreon, Buy Me A Coffee or Ko-Fi.PatreonBuy Me A CoffeeKo-Fi This is a public episode. Kim Jong Un Improves The Hermit Kingdom’s Stature: That Aint Good

The Korean Peninsula has been embroiled in conflict since June 1950, with North Korea actively participating in the Ukraine War and providing military support. South Korea has signed weapons agreements with NATO European countries, particularly Poland, and has been involved in NATO as a partner country. Despite facing public setbacks, such as the botched launch of a destroyer, North Korea has positioned itself for military ascendance. The new South Korean president, Lee Jae-myung, has sought rapprochement with North Korea and has publicly aimed to re-establish dialogue with the North. North Korea has stated that its nuclear program is off-limits to negotiations with South Korea or the United States, and it may make humiliating demands of South Korea as it tries to reproachment with the North. The situation on the Korean Peninsula seems to favor North Korea, as its nuclear program has resurfaced in discussions, often for less than favorable reasons.North Korea's nuclear weapons are being used as a means to secure international aid, a strategy that has played a significant role in preserving the country's dynastic power. The international community seems willing to assist North Korea in preserving its dynasty and control of nuclear weapons. North Korea is shifting from conventional military forces to relying more on nuclear capabilities, particularly through its extensive missile program. To strengthen its nuclear capabilities, North Korea needs to miniaturize its warheads and develop re-entry vehicles. Russia could provide valuable assistance in this area to speed up the development curve. North Korea is also constructing a new uranium enrichment site, which aligns with Kim Jong Un's statements about the expansion of its nuclear arsenal. The interconnection between nuclear weapons and the Kim dynasty is a fact that other countries must accept, forcing them to determine how to coexist with a bellicose, nuclear-armed North Korea.Research or support me through Patreon, Buy Me A Coffee or Ko-Fi.PatreonBuy Me A CoffeeKo-Fi This is a public episode. Nuclear Warfare Policy: Cold War to Today: Part 6 - Audio Version

Holding the civilian population and infrastructure of the Cold War adversary as a virtual hostage to nuclear annihilation served as the cornerstone of the nuclear doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction and countervalue targeting.
