P’nimiyut

To reject loshon hara as false is a great source of merit.

A gossiper has no credibility and his words cannot be accepted as truth.

One who follows the teachings of Torah will avoid any possibility of baseless hatred.

What more need be said concerning this most severe of sins.

When a Jew speaks loshon hara, his every word is recorded by a Heavenly angel.

Those who habitually speak loshon hara will find no cure for themselves at the End of Days.

The reward for those who refrain from evil speech is beyond comprehension, and the sins of the gossipmonger outweigh the very worst transgressions.

There is no natural way for the metzora to rid himself of his affliction; his only hope is teshuvah.

It would have been fitting to conceal the episode of Miriam’s tzaraas. The Torah records it, and commands us to recall it, to emphasize the severity of loshon hara.

The sufferings of poverty take the place of tzaraas.

The gossiper should bemoan the state of his soul.

When Hashem visits punishment upon an individual, He does it for the person’s benefit.

The metzora’s isolation and disgrace humbled him, and inspired him to regret his sin,

Why must the metzora live in isolation? Because he caused friction between those who had loved one another.

To love and pursue peace is to secure for oneself a place in the World to Come.

Hashem allowed His sacred Name to be erased in order to restore peace between husband and wife.

When does Hashem manifest His Presence among His people? When they are united.

Shabbos candles take precedence over Kiddush wine, for their light fosters peace and harmony in one’s home.

Never despair and say, “It is impossible to make peace!”

If someone bears you ill will, greet him with peace, for this will awaken a positive feeling within him.

Wherever peace is found, fear of G-d is found; wherever peace is lacking, fear of G-d is lacking.

One who speaks ill of others becomes contemptible even to those who listened to his evil talk and accepted it as truth.

Surely there is infinite reward for man who, through his own free choice, refrains from speaking the forbidden.

When a Jew studies Torah, he perfects his entire being — but this can be forfeited through speaking loshon hara.

When business matters are concerned, people are careful to remove any possible impediment to success. Should we be any less vigilant in our spiritual pursuits?

The awesome sanctity of Torah is an unchanging fact; the greater the purity of one’s speech, the more he is bound up with the light of the Torah he learns.

There is no comparison between breath that is tainted by sin and breath that is free of sin.

Can one transform an accuser into an advocate?

The metzora must seek the prayers of others, because his own prayers would be rejected in Heaven.

Through shmiras haloshon, a Jew forever enhances the spiritual power of his words.

The best craftsman cannot perform his task properly if tools are flawed and of poor quality.

The gossiper looks over his shoulder to make sure that his target is not listening. But why isn’t he worried that Hashem is listening?!

Jerusalem was destroyed because of the gossipers who caused baseless hatred to reign.

The exceptional Torah knowledge of the children in Shaul’s generation could not gain his armies victory in battle — such is the power of loshon hara.

One who speaks loshon hara destroys three people: the subject of his evil words, his listener and himself.

The way to ensure ourselves of eternal reward for all our good deeds is by avoiding loshon hara.

Man is superior to other creatures only if he uses his power of speech in a constructive manner.

Those who refrain from speaking ill of others can rest assured that their entreaties carry great weight in Heaven.

Middah k’neged middah (measure for measure) is the rule of Heaven in all instances.

Those who speak loshon hara cause the Accuser to speak against the Jewish people.
