Radha Curpen: Can Canada Still Build Big Projects?
Canada says this is the decade of energy security and trade diversification. But can we actually build the infrastructure to make that happen? In this episode of Power Struggle, Stewart Muir sits down with Radha Curpen, National Leader of McMillan LLP’s ESG and Sustainability Practice, to unpack what it really takes to deliver major projects in Canada today. From pipelines and transmission lines to ports, data centres and critical minerals, Curpen explains why modern infrastructure must pass three tests: legal legitimacy, social durability, and capital credibility. The conversation explores:• The Canada–Alberta Memorandum of Understanding and what it actually means • Why a west coast pipeline is possible — but far from inevitable • Alberta’s urgency vs. B.C.’s caution • Indigenous consultation, equity ownership, and economic reconciliation • Why some investors now describe B.C. as “uninvestable” • How duplication and regulatory complexity stall projects • Why governance — not politics — determines durabilityCurpen argues that project success depends on early planning, corridor thinking, relationship-building, and legal clarity. Equity is no longer just about revenue sharing — it’s about operational oversight, environmental accountability, and long-term value for Indigenous communities. At stake is more than one pipeline. It’s whether Canada can operate as a first-world economy — attracting capital, reconciling rights, and building nation-scale infrastructure in an era of polarization. This is a national test case.Send us Fan MailThe energy conversation is polarizing. Craig Tindale: The Coming Copper Crunch That Could Stall AI, Energy & Defence
What if the future we’re planning simply can’t be built? In this episode of Power Struggle, Stewart Muir speaks with Craig Tindale, private investor, systems thinker, and author of the widely discussed essay “Copper: Limits to Growth in the Age of Demand Simultaneity.”Tindale argues that for the first time in industrial history, three massive transitions are colliding at once: artificial intelligence, electrification, and military rearmament. Each demands staggering quantities of copper and critical minerals. Together, they may exceed what the physical world can supply.AI data centers require 50,000 tons of copper each.Gallium demand projected to outstrip global production.Transformers and rare earths facing 5–10 year bottlenecks.China is refining 50–60% of the world’s copper. The conversation explores:• Why price signals alone won’t solve mineral shortages • How central banking and cost of capital shape industrial capacity • The strategic implications of China’s refining dominance • Whether electrification timelines are physically achievable • Why innovation and circular economy solutions may not arrive fast enough • The case for surge capacity and domestic refining • How robotics and AI may reshape industrial production • Why policymakers may need to rethink globalizationIs this a temporary bottleneck — or a structural turning point for Western economies? This episode connects resource geology, geopolitics, climate ambition, defense strategy, and financial systems into one uncomfortable question:Are we planning a future the planet cannot supply?Send us Fan MailThe energy conversation is polarizing. Is Canadian LNG a Climate Solution? | Mark Cameron on Energy, Exports & Emissions
Canada’s energy exports are often criticized as a climate liability — but what if they could actually reduce global emissions? In this episode of Power Struggle, Stewart Muir sits down with Mark Cameron — Fellow at the Public Policy Forum, Senior Associate with BlueSky Strategy Group, and former VP of External Relations at the Pathways Alliance and former Deputy Minister of Policy Coordination with the Government of Alberta — to unpack the findings of a groundbreaking report he co-authored: "Refuel". Backed by advanced modeling from Navius Research, the study shows that scaling up Canadian LNG exports by 47 million tonnes per year could lead to a net global emissions reduction of 40 to 70 megatonnes annually, largely by displacing coal and higher-emitting alternatives.Cameron also reflects on: • Why carbon accounting should be global, not local • The growing role of Indigenous partnerships in energy development • How Canada compares to the U.S. on emissions intensity • What the new federal–Alberta MOU really means for climate and investmentThis conversation cuts through the noise and reframes Canada’s place in the global energy transition.Send us Fan MailThe energy conversation is polarizing. Can Canada lead the global AI revolution — or are we about to miss our moment?
Forget model tweaks—the real AI race is about power. We sit down with Kris Krug to map how GPUs translate into gigawatts, why data centers are the new factories, and what it would take for British Columbia and Canada to turn clean energy into sovereign intelligence instead of exporting value and importing electrons. From Vancouver’s buzzing AI meetups to Meta’s multi‑gigawatt builds, we connect the dots between policy, infrastructure, and the businesses already adopting AI far beyond chatbots.Kris walks us through his path from creative tech to generative AI, the moment Midjourney reignited his practice, and the community that formed around practical workflows. We dig into the hard math of energy—firm power versus storage fantasies, LNG tradeoffs versus hydro flexibility—and the strategic fork in the road: build compute where clean energy is abundant or watch others do it faster with our resources. Along the way, we unpack how jobs are changing toward orchestration and token efficiency, why hallucinations fade with purpose‑built tools, and how young workers use AI as an operating layer, not a search engine. We also spotlight a different kind of leadership: Indigenous‑led data centers in cooler, energy‑rich regions, sovereign data governance, and the Indigenomics Institute’s AI platform measuring economic value GDP misses. Alberta’s coordinated push (and Amii’s impact) shows what alignment can unlock; BC’s opportunity is to organize around clean, green, ethical AI that keeps models, insights, and benefits closer to home. If energy is the new cornerstone of intelligence, then policy is product design—and the decisions we make now will decide who owns the tokens of tomorrow. If this conversation got you thinking, follow and share the show, leave a review with your biggest takeaway, and tell us: should clean power make AI a Canadian strategic priority?Send us Fan MailThe energy conversation is polarizing. Susanna Pierce reveals the inside story of the $40 billion LNG Canada project as it prepares to ship its first cargo – a milestone she helped shape during her tenure as president of Shell Canada. The conversation takes us behind the curtain of mega-project development, where Pierce describes the intricate dance of coordinating every aspect of the value chain while building meaningful partnerships with First Nations communities. "What made LNG Canada reality was everyone coming together," she explains, highlighting how Indigenous leadership from figures like Crystal Smith and Ellis Ross was fundamental to the project's success. This represents a powerful model of economic reconciliation where First Nations have "a share and a say" in resource development.Pierce offers unique perspective on what it means for Canada to become an energy superpower – balancing our hydrocarbon resources with climate responsibility while remaining competitive in global markets. Drawing from her experience living in both Alberta and British Columbia, she provides nuanced insights on the cultural and economic divides that shape our national energy conversations: "When I read the newspaper in BC about oil and gas, I heard about how bad we are. In Calgary, I heard about how misunderstood we are."Now heading into a new chapter with Peter Tertzakian at StudioEnergy, Pierce is applying her skills to create data-driven solutions for Canada's energy challenges. But perhaps most surprising is her passionate commitment to fighting human trafficking in Canada – a cause she's tackling by building networks between organizations and corporations to create collective impact. As Canada navigates complex choices about its energy future, Pierce offers a compelling vision: the opportunity to redefine who we are on the global stage while creating prosperity at home. Her journey demonstrates how leadership, resilience and cooperation can move seemingly impossible projects from vision to reality.Ready to hear more conversations with energy decision-makers shaping our future? Is Canada Sleepwalking Into China's Trap | Election Special Ep.7
Canada desperately wants to diversify its export economy. Many believe expanding to other markets is critical to dealing with the new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. But renowned journalist Terry Glavin cautions this shouldn’t mean we integrate with China. The more Canada associates economically with China, the more vulnerable and subservient we become to the whims of the world’s most successful torture state. In the latest episode of the Power Struggle podcast special election series, Glavin tells host Stewart Muir that Canada must carefully weigh the new geo-political global reality. During the federal election, Prime Minister and Liberal Leader Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre insisted the country needs to move away from US economic dependence. They called for accelerated energy projects and more pipelines. Now that the election is over, it’s time for sober second thought about what this strategy means. Take the Trans Mountain Pipeline. A huge percentage of its oil already flows to China. Is an expansive, overbearing totalitarian regime the trading partner we want? Forging greater commercial alliances with China could have the opposite effect of the independence Canada wishes to safeguard. We would be sacrificing political sovereignty for the false security of economic independence.Canada rightly worries about Trump’s calls for annexation. But Trump will be gone within four years. China isn’t going anywhere and is much more dangerous. Gavin discusses the multitude of threats posed by China’s desire for global economic dominance. It can only get worse. Snubbing Canada’s Nose at Trump | Election Special Ep.6
Donald Trump didn’t start the problem. But Jack Mintz knows how to fix it. In the latest episode of the Power Struggle special election series, Mintz tells host Stewart Muir that Canada’s declining productivity started long before the US President’s new tariff war. The solution isn’t slapping the United States with counter-tariffs. The solution is eliminating tariffs and non-trading barriers with as many other trading partners as possible.Especially in the natural resource sector. That’s how we snub our noses at Trump. Canada needs to move forward on liberalizing trade with the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand to name a few. Mintz explains his strategy while citing his recent Financial Post article that argues for streamlined regulations, liberal trade policies, and a simpler tax system. And in the Trump era, building stronger trade relations with other countries is how Canada fixes its trade relationship with the United States. North America remains one of the strongest trade regions in the world. Even with trade diversification, our best market is still the United States. It may even be after Trump leaves that the trade relationship gets repaired. In case anyone missed it, Mintz reminds the Power Struggle audience that Canada depends on a natural resource export economy. This isn’t lost on our political leaders. Both Liberal Leader and Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre are pushing for the acceleration of energy projects. Mintz argues that neither may be prepared to go far enough. How Trump's Threats Are Reshaping Canada's Energy Strategy | Election Special Ep.5
Monica Gattinger wants to know how. How will the federal Liberal and Conservative leaders fast-track the approval of energy projects? The projects that will reduce Canada’s reliance on US markets. Are Mark Carney and Pierre Poilievre moving too fast and furiously in trying to respond to the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump? All to get votes in the current federal election.Gattinger wants to know if they understand the obstacles. What about the climate, Indigenous rights, and the current approval processes? The latest episode of the Power Struggle special election series digs into these challenges. Host Stewart Muir’s guest says Canada cannot afford to get this wrong. But how fast can we get it right? Gattinger explains that this means energy projects that achieve a durable balance and stand the test of time.Professor Gattinger knows her stuff. She heads up The Positive Energy program at the University of Ottawa. The program looks at ways to build public confidence in energy decision-making. This means knowing if our political leaders can do what they say they will do. Gattinger recently co-authored a report on how Canada can get to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. It calls for much of the realignment the next Prime Minister will need to consider for the sector at large. It won’t be easy. Regulatory reform is only part of the answer. Another huge part is viable Indigenous involvement. Yet another is figuring out how to make the process predictable and clear for investors. Gattinger explores the big changes needed if Canada wants to get serious about transforming the energy system.🔔 Subscribe now and join us each week as we follow Canada’s election!Send us Fan MailThe energy conversation is polarizing. Goodbye Silver Platter | Election Special Ep.2 with Brian Lee Crowley
Can Canada and the US together become the dominant global energy power?Economist Brian Lee Crowley thinks so. He explains how in the latest episode of Power Struggle. Brian says Canada has no choice but to deepen our economic relationship with the US. And despite what Donald Trump says, the Americans are just as dependent on Canada for many products, like aluminum, and will be for some time. That’s not what we hear our political leaders saying during the current federal election campaign. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre are both promising to build the infrastructure needed to reduce Canada’s reliance on the US in response to President Donald Trump’s tariff war. They want to speed up energy exports to global markets.Brian doesn’t think his Canada-US strategy is at odds with these plans. Building transmission lines, railways, and pipelines are all needed no matter what. But that will take time. What about the short term? Brian also tells host Stewart Muir what Canada should be doing immediately. It won’t be easy. But Brian is convinced it’s time for Canadians to stop thinking the world owes them prosperity. Nothing will be handed to us on “a silver platter” anymore. But if we play our cards right, says Brian, there’s no reason we can’t make a deal with this President.Canada is at a crossroads.
