Detroit’s Own Pastor Jason Palmer Returns To Musical Roots

Pastor Jason Palmer returns to his gospel music roots with a new name, “JP & Nem,” and a new single, “Just Like Fiyah.” I had the chance to talk to JP about his 13-year hiatus, his new song… and the new name. I just had to know who “Nem” was.Pastor Jason Palmer stops by the Praise Studio with new music. It’s been some time since I’ve talked to Pastor Jason Palmer in person. Actually, the last time we talked about music… he wasn’t “Pastor” but rather JP with JP & Seasons. JP took a bit of a detour with music, as his church was planted and nurtured. When JP was the frontman of JP & Seasons, the music was decidedly different than his new release, “Just Like Fire.” With JP and Seasons, the music varied from Contemporary Christian to Christian Rock still, the sound was impactful and award winning. JP and Seasons picked up two “Rhythm of Gospel Awards” in 2011 for CD of the Year and Urban Contemporary R&P CD of the Year.“Just Like Fire” is as heartfelt as his previous music and is a powerful, soulful, Jeremiah 20:9 new start for this gifted man of God. In addition to JP’s music, he is an author (“God Help Me to Forgive”) and pastor of the Goodness & Mercy Church with two locations in Detroit. Erica Campbell: Trust & Obey Is Blind Faith Even If I Don’t Understand

Erica Campbell’s new single, “Trust and Obey”  is a testimony of as Erica says, “blind faith even if I don’t understand.” Each time I talk to the multi-award-winning singer and radio host, I learn a little bit more about not only her music but her faith walk. And she is always inspiring.I asked Erica what the word “obey” look like to her and why people find it difficult to trust and obey. Erica said, “God is consistent, God is faithful, He does not fail even when it’s uncomfortable. You believe it’s gonna work out for your good, so you obey Him. You believe that even if He calls you to do something that you’ve never done before, you can trust Him.”We also talked about the video of “Trust and Obey” and how she decided to shoot it in London, and the upcoming tour she will be on with David and Tamela Mann along with her daughter Krista. Campbell is the host of the nationally syndicated radio show “Get Up! Mornings with Erica Campbell” that can be heard weekdays 6am-10am EST on the Detroit Praise Network.Additionally, Erica has released three solo albums as well as seven albums with her sister as part of the dynamic duo “Mary Mary.” Erica is also an author and host of the very successful, “Laugh Cry, Heal Conference. Campbell is married to Grammy Award-winning producer and pastor of California Worship Center, Warryn Campbell II. They have three children — Krista, Warryn III and Zaya.Find Erica on social media at @imEricaCampbell.HEAR: Erica Campbell: Trust & Obey Is Blind Faith Even If I Don’t Understand’

Artist Spotlight: Micah Lee ‘Clap My Way’

I first met Micah Lee at a Stellar Award Artist Showcase in Las Vegas. Despite being an amazing singer, I also noticed his positive attitude and confident demeaner. What I didn’t know then, Micah was in tremendous pain due to a horrible car accident in 2005. Later, I would find out that he was told he would never walk again. Which you can clearly see… is not true.ALSO: Micah Lee: Don’t Give Up & ‘Don’t Break’ [[Exclusive Interview]]Today, I had the opportunity to talk to Micah about his latest song, “Clap My Way,” which is taking radio by storm and is a direct testimony of his life. We talked about the background of the song, and the promise he made to his father before his death when the song was released.Micah’s sound is described a blend of jazz, neo-soul, R&B, and gospel with chart worthy songs like, “Heaven,” “Forever,” and “Tis The Season.” Lee is also a model, fashion blogger and named a “modern-day renaissance man” by BET. DKG KIE Takes Us To “Demon Killer University”

In this episode, I explore the music, background and experiences that shaped the distinctive style of talented multi-artist, DKG KIE. I learned about DKG KIE through artist, producer and talent developer Velvet Force, and I wanted to learn more about this multitalented man of God.KIE’s music is very raw and authentic, so I had to find out about his background, and the experiences that shaped his style.Church boy turned bad boy, DKG KIE, found himself in a tough spot. He was close to being killed or going to jail, but life took a different turn. After reconnecting to God, KIE found his calling as a youth pastor and he said he, “literally made a mistake and started rapping,” but turns out it wasn’t a mistake at all. Listen to the rest of our conversation below. “Demon Killer University” is a 15-track album that features “Holy Huh.” KIE stated that there are many women who love Jesus and also enjoy jewelry and nice clothes. They still go out and have fun, but loving Jesus is the core of who they are, and that is not highlighted enough. KIE’s song is a tribute to these women who love Jesus and are proud to do so. We also chatted about the single “Take the Wheel.” KIE confesses that he and many of his peers are finding out that they are all learning that we have to take our hands off the wheel and off the gas pedal because we can’t do it on our own. (“We” includes yours truly as well.)KIE’s new project, “Demon Killer University” is available now on all streaming platforms. The ‘Sister 2  Sister From Pain To Power’ Conference Bringing Help & Healing

When I heard about the Sister 2  Sister from Pain to Power Conference coming to Hartford Memorial on October 18th and 19th, I was excited because this is so needed in our community. The tremendous lineup of psalmists, speakers, and workshops is the brainchild of First Lady Nicole Adams, founder of Rebuild the Foundation. The Sister 2  Sister From Pain To Power Conference Bringing Help & HealingRebuild the Foundation was founded in 2019 during the pandemic in Chicago, IL to help feed, educate cloth, and provide vaccines to the community.  When Adams moved to Detroit, the not-for-profit organization pivoted to help women and children who were suffering from homelessness domestic violence, and drug addiction. Her goal is to create homes for women to live in until they can “transition back into society as renewed individuals.” The concert and conference is designed to begin that process as well as a way to educate and empower those who attend. The Sister 2  Sister From Pain To Power Conference Bringing Help & HealingI talked to First Lady Nicole Adams as well as Rev. Nikita G. McCalister, President of the American Baptist Churches, about this empowering event and the details about what you can expect when you attend. The Legacy Of Troy Sneed Lives On & “All Is Well”

Troy Sneed’s impact on gospel music is unforgettable. As a celebrated recording artist, composer, producer, and owner of a gospel label, he garnered many awards. His presence on the Billboard charts was constant from 2006, with hits such as “The Struggle is Over,” to 2017, featuring songs like “Kept by His Grace” and “Taking it Back.”Troy Sneed’s death in April 2020 due to Covid-19 complications was deeply felt. However, his music endures, providing comfort and inspiration to many. Though Troy is no longer with us, his musical spirit remains a source of solace and encouragement. (Carpenter/PR)Emtro Gospel, the record label founded by Troy Sneed, has recently re-released his song “All is Well,” which now includes vocals from his youngest son, Trey Sneed.  I had recently had the opportunity to talk to Trey about his dad, how the idea of the re-release happened, and healing through the grief. Trey mentioned that these days, he remembers his dad with happiness instead of sorrow. He realizes that the bond they shared, along with the wisdom and affection his father instilled in him, has crafted the supportive community of love that surrounds him now. Artist Spotlight “Today:” The Legendary Vanessa Bell Armstrong

Today… which ironically enough is the title of Dr. Vanessa Bell Armstrong’s latest project… is very special. Because not only did I get to interview this living legend, but we also talked in the studio like two friends who haven’t seen each other in years.Though the conversation is about her new project, “Today” Vanessa dropped major jewels about her journey like working with Thomas Whitfield, Walter Hawkins, Donald Lawrence and John P. Kee. Additionally, we talked about how this wasn’t a project on her radar because she didn’t believe she was going to “do anything else.” However, a pivotal conversation with Donald Lawrence shifted her perspective. Personally, I am delighted that it did.We discussed her life’s calling, her father’s advice, and how her parents both fostered a sense of godly humility in her. Listen to the Complete Interview BelowThe album “Today” features nine tracks starting with the catchy and uplifting title song. “Today,” written by Tony Jones, Walter W. Millsap III, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, and Teak, and produced by Walter Millsap III and Teak. The song aims to connect with the youth and bridge generational gaps, reveals Vanessa. “It’s a reminder that life is all that you make it and that there is no need to worry because God has everything under control. “All you have to do is just smile and be happy.”“Today” also features “Lift Him Up,” a song Vanessa claims will “make you shout and dance!” Other tracks like the beautiful gospel ballad “Miracles” and “Because of Your Grace” offer heartfelt testimonies. Meanwhile, “Forever Yours” and “Rely On Me,” both crafted by John P. Kee, resonate with a classic old-school vibe.A seven-time Grammy nominee and multiple Stellar Award winner, Vanessa has overcome many challenges for herself and her loved ones, including a health issue that made singing difficult for a time. Her song “Walking Miracle,” from her 2007 album of the same name, was inspired by her son’s struggle with multiple sclerosis. Through faith and perseverance, she continued to record subsequent albums and was honored with many other awards… but is only concerned with the reward of having God say, “Well Done”.“This new album is so special to me,” Vanessa reflects, “because it’s a long time coming. God allowed me to finish it just before my father passed and went to heaven. I dedicate this album to him.” (Shanachie Entertainment) Get “Today” where you listen to music and find Dr. Armstrong on social media @Dr_VanessaBellArmst Instagram, @vanessabellarmstrong Facebook and on YouTube at Official Vanessa Bell Armstrong!

Artist Spotlight On Rufus Johnson Is “So Good”

Recently, I had the opportunity to catch up with Rufus Johnson the self-proclaimed “saved R&B singer” about his latest music. This Richmond, Virginia native is known for his songs with GI – you know, “Pray and Don’t Worry and I’m Ready” – but is now a solo artist. Today we talk about Rufus Johnson’s journey from singing in churches to singing with GI. Rufus says that singing with GI gave him a glimpse of the industry from record charts and traveling, which gave him the confidence to pursue a solo career. Rufus came out swinging with his first solo song, “Thank You.”Rufus Johnson says that his newest single, “So Good,” is a continuation of his previous song, “Thank You.” He and his producer, D. Bryant, wanted to “go to the next level” with this song, and they succeeded. Rufus Johnson and his wife Kristen are the driving force behind KR Scholars, a nonprofit organization that awards scholarships to deserving HBCU students. Trina Hairston: Saying “Yes” To God” With Debut EP

Today, I had the chance to catch up with Trina Hairston, of course part of the dynamic ministry with her husband JJ Hairston and Youthful Praise. The Hairston’s are no strangers to music with two decades of huge gospel hits, but now Trina is adding to the collection with a new EP called, Sanctified: Live from Ancient Oil. A while back I told JJ and Trina that they needed to have a church… I felt that in my spirit… but at the time, they were both leery of being in the ministry in that way. But, Trina said, she and JJ began to say “yes” to God’s word, no matter if they were scared or no matter what that looked like and are now co-Pastors at The Gathering Place DC.With the new project, Trina said she, “wanted people to experience what we felt in God’s presence at the Ancient Oil Conference and hopes it touches and moves people into worship.” We also chatted about the new single from the 8-track project, “Nothing Else,” written by none other than JJ Hairston.

We chatted about where the idea for the movie came from, and the roles played by Bishop Corletta Vaughn, Bishop Eric Lloyd, and Randall Johnson, who were in the studio with me. Beverly Crawford’s New Single Is A Triple Celebration

Pastor Beverly Crawford has so much to be grateful for! Not only did she just celebrate her 60th birthday, but she also marked her big day by releasing a new single with a reimagined version of Todd Galberth’s hit, “Lord You Are Good.” If that were not enough, Beverly and husband Todd are currently planning her first live recording since 2014’s Thank You for All You’ve Done… their eighth full length album, slated for a 2024 release.  We had the opportunity to talk about all three big celebrations below. When Pastor Beverly Crawford was singing in her father’s tent revivals as a child with her siblings, The Camps Sisters, she never imagined that she was in training for a life that would be spent traveling the world proclaiming the Gospel. Crawford, a Gainesville native brought what the Chicago Tribune described as “raw fire…hot-stepping, in-the-spirit shouting” to national television for eight years on Bobby Jones Gospel as part of his New Life ensemble, which delivered Gospel music into millions of homes weekly on Black Entertainment Television (BET). Dr. Jones, discovered her when she and her sisters first performed on his show, gave her the opportunity to learn from Gospel music’s pioneers like the late Albertina Walker and Pastor Shirley Caesar. The multiple Grammy and Dove nominee and Stellar Awards winner has recorded with Kirk Franklin, Earnest Pugh, the Mississippi Mass Choir, Shirley Murdock, Ricky Dillard and many others. Beverly and husband Todd are committed to keeping gospel’s traditional sound relevant for and important to the next generation. (Alex R.
