#63 Can AI Help You Win a Pageant? Let’s Talk About It.
Send us Fan MailAI in pageants? Yep, we're going there. Before you picture robots on stage or chatbots writing your paperwork, take a breath, because this conversation is all about authenticity meets innovation. In this episode, we're diving into how you can use tools like ChatGPT to actually enhance your prep, not replace it. From organizing your thoughts for paperwork and brainstorming interview questions, to refining your speaking points and saving time on research, AI can be a huge asset when you know how to use it mindfully. But here's the thing: no piece of technology can tell your story the way you can. That's why I'm breaking down how to use AI without losing your voice, your values, or your "why."We'll talk about the mindset behind using tech with purpose, where to draw boundaries, and how to make sure your prep stays grounded in your own authenticity. #60 Stop Second-Guessing: Lead With Conviction
Send us Fan MailIt's officially spooky season, and we're kicking off October with a conversation so many of my clients needed this week: conviction. If you've been second-guessing your choices - taking a break from school, choosing a 2-year program over a 4-year degree, heading into cosmetology or a trade - this one’s for you. Pageantry invites judgment by design, but leadership looks like standing by your decisions and your opinions without apologizing for them.In this episode, I share the mindset shifts I coach on during local season: how to stop editing your paperwork out of fear, how to anchor your choices in your "why," and how to communicate with calm confidence in interview - even on tough issues. Conviction isn't stubbornness; it's clarity + ownership. You can consider every perspective and still stand firm in your values. Let's talk about owning your path, telling the truth of your story, and leading your life your way. You'll learn:How to reframe "nontraditional" paths as strengths in interviewWhat conviction sounds like (and what apology language to drop)Simple lines to explain a gap year, program changes, or pivots with confidenceWhy judges respond to authenticity over perfectionA go-watch example of conviction in action from Miss America interview historyLeave today with this mantra: I live with conviction. #59 Unpopular Opinions: Pageant Edition
Send us Fan MailEpisode 59 is a lighter, sassier breath of fresh air. We're diving into some unpopular opinions and pageant pet peeves. From the pressure to "build a brand" to multi-thousand dollar gowns, sponsor politics, secrecy around paperwork, and that overused interview crutches, - I'm sharing what I've seen as a coach, judge, and former titleholder, and why staying in your lane (and protecting your energy) will always outshine playing the game. Here's what we get into:Personal branding vs. actually knowing yourselfCoaching programs and budgets (value > price tag)Couture gowns, recycling looks, and what really reads on stageSecrecy culture around paperwork, talent, and wardrobeSponsors, "politics," and choosing the path of least resistanceComparison as a teacher... not a blueprintInterview pet peeves and stronger ways to answer directlyIf it works for you, do it. #58 Burnout-Free Prep: Your Local Season Game Plan
Send us Fan MailThis week is a reset for anyone grinding through back-to-back locals. I break down how to treat every competition as an opportunity, not an ultimatum, using a growth-mindset lens. We walk through smart ways to study competitors without slipping into self-judgment, why "busy" isn't the same as "making progress," and evidence-backed self-care that actually improves performance (think boundaries, short breaks, movement, and celebrating small wins). You'll get a simple game plan to structure prep weeks with balance, use locals as practice for bigger stages, and stay anchored to your why - so you show up refreshed, authentic, and consistent. The crown isn't worth your peace; this season is about growth, joy, and becoming. Free App Download: Click here to download the Fearlessly Authentic App! #57 More Than Politics: Human Dignity, Pageantry, and Perspective
Send us Fan MailThis episode takes you on a journey through the sharp contrast between joy and heartbreak. It started with me celebrating my anniversary on a blissful spa weekend, only to return home and be met with the heated online debates following Miss America; and then, just days later, national tragedies that shook us all.Having been on the pageant stage myself, I know how much vulnerability it takes to stand there and invite judgment. Watching the backlash toward our new Miss America led me to think about comparison, not as something that tears us down, but as something we can use to grow. When we compare only to rank ourselves as "better" or "worse," we lose. But when we notice what inspires us, what challenges us, and what makes each person unique, comparison can actually refine us.Pageantry has always been a reminder of just how subjective life can be. Judges bring their own experiences and perspectives to every score, which is why results can vary so much from one stage to the next. That’s also life: different people will always see you differently. What matters most is showing up as your authentic self - not twisting yourself into what you think someone else wants. Then, as tragedy struck nationally, I wrestled with the way human suffering became politicized so quickly. In therapy, I was reminded of something powerful: politics and human dignity are not the same thing. We can disagree on policy, but the value of human life should never be up for debate. In the face of so much heaviness, I share some practices that have kept me grounded: honoring my own trauma, validating my fears, practicing self-care, seeking out what is good, and fiercely protecting my peace. Sometimes it's as simple as putting down my phone, looking up at the sunlight through the trees, and reminding myself that right here, right now, I'm okay. So, I'll leave you with this: how do you find peace when the world feels overwhelming? And what helps you protect your mental health while staying present and engaged? Free App Download: Click here to download the Fearlessly Authentic App! #56 Turning the Page: Lessons for a New Season of Competition
Send us Fan MailThis episode is a real, unfiltered look at resilience and authenticity... the kind that's forged through life's hardest seasons. In the past year, I've walked through grief, pregnancy loss, medical emergencies, and stepping into the role of caregiver after my dad's stroke. Those moments completely shifted my perspective, not just on pageantry, but on life as a whole.Stepping back forced me to ask myself why this work matters and what makes it meaningful. And through hundreds of conversations with contestants who are navigating their own storms, I kept hearing the same themes come up, themes I want to unpack with you as we head into this competition season. We'll talk about how setbacks can actually become your strongest assets when you know how to frame them, why competition fatigue and the infamous "first runner-up club" can mess with your mindset, and how freeing it is to define success on your own terms instead of chasing crowns out of obligation. One of the biggest shifts? Treating competition like a celebration instead of a test. When you walk into pageant week ready to celebrate your growth, your journey, and the sisterhood around you, you show up from a place of joy - not fear. And that joy doesn’t just feel better, it changes the way you perform. So many women I coach are hesitant to name what they really want, lowering the bar to avoid disappointment. But I'll never forget a coach once telling me: "Don't set the bar for what you think you can accomplish. Set it for everything you'd ever want to accomplish." Owning your deepest ambitions creates space for you to surprise yourself. As Miss America week unfolds, these reminders feel more important than ever. Whether you're competing this season or navigating challenges in your own life, know this: your worth has nothing to do with results. Let your nerves come along for the ride, but they don’t get to take the wheel.I'd love to hear what resonates with you. Come connect with me on Instagram @SashandSoul and tell me what themes you'd like to dive deeper into on future episodes. Free App Download: Click here to download the Fearlessly Authentic App! #55 Crowned & Candid: Carlehr Swanson, Miss Virginia 2024
Send us Fan MailWhat happens when you pursue a dream for a decade, facing rejection six times, before finally achieving it on your last possible attempt? Carlehr Swanson, Miss Virginia 2024, reveals the powerful journey that transformed her from a shy music student into a confident state titleholder whose mission transcends the crown itself.Carlehr's story isn't just about persistence—it's about the profound self-discovery that happens when you stop trying to become what others expect and finally embrace your authentic self. "Once I finally accepted this is who I am, this is what I can bring to this position, this is why I'm special...that acceptance led me to winning," she reflects. Standing on stage during her final attempt at age 28, rather than feeling desperate for the title, she found herself thinking: "I'm blessed either way."Through her "Music is Unity" initiative, Carlehr shares how music became her bridge to connection when visiting her grandmother in rehabilitation. What began as personal performances evolved into a movement, partnering with organizations like Sing for Hope and Music and Memory to demonstrate music's power to unite communities and help those with memory disorders. One of her most touching practices? Standing by the door after school appearances to ensure every single child—especially the shy ones—has a moment to be seen and heard. The conversation explores the challenges of balancing self-care with service, handling imposter syndrome, and finding purpose beyond performance. As she prepares to pass on her crown and resume her PhD studies in music, Carlehr leaves us with this perspective: "Move me out of the way—this is about the people I encounter along this journey." Her approach reminds us that our greatest impact often comes when we stop focusing on ourselves and instead become vessels for something greater.Subscribe now and join our community of pageant professionals, competitors, and fans exploring the transformative journeys behind the crowns. #54 Crowned & Candid: Kalyn Melham, Miss Indiana 2024
Send us Fan MailWhat does it truly mean to hold a state title in the Miss America Organization? In this heart-to-heart conversation, Miss Indiana 2024 Kalyn Melham pulls back the curtain on her journey through pageantry with refreshing candor and wisdom.Kalyn's path wasn't the typical one – she started competing in college at 18, not as a little girl with a childhood dream. Her story reveals the power of authenticity in a world often associated with perfection. "You can either wear the title or it can wear you," she shares, capturing the essence of her approach to the crown. Throughout our discussion, Kalyn emphasizes that pageantry is simply one chapter in life's larger story, not something that defines your worth or future. The conversation takes us through the business side of being Miss Indiana – from restructuring her service initiative to make a broader impact, navigating social media pressures, and building partnerships across the state. We explore the unexpected challenges of wearing a crown in serious settings and how she learned when sparkle was appropriate versus when a more subdued approach better served her purpose. Kalyn candidly discusses her Miss America experience, sharing how different it felt from her state preparation and the emotions of returning home afterward. What makes this episode particularly special is Kalyn's perspective on transition. In just one year, she graduated with her master's degree, won Miss Indiana, competed at Miss America, started a new job at Butler University, moved to a new apartment, and got engaged! Through it all, she maintained a beautiful outlook that embraces each experience for what it is, without placing her entire identity in any single achievement. As her reign comes to a close, Kalyn leaves us with a powerful message about kindness – not just toward others, but toward yourself. #53 Crowned & Candid: Bridget O'Brien, Miss Maryland 2024
Send us Fan MailFrom a driven competitor who placed as runner-up six times to the confident woman wearing the Miss Maryland crown, Bridget O'Brien's journey exemplifies the power of resilience and authenticity in pageantry and life. Her refreshing candor about the realities of state titleholder life will resonate with anyone who's ever faced rejection or wondered if they're "enough."Bridget's community service initiative "Boomerang" perfectly encapsulates her philosophy: failure isn't final—it's simply a detour on your journey to success. Using the powerful metaphor of a GPS recalculating rather than telling you to turn around and go home, she's reached over 4,000 students across Maryland with this transformative message. Having traveled 30,000 miles across her state, Bridget prioritized reaching small communities that might otherwise be overlooked, creating meaningful connections that transcended typical "appearances."What's particularly striking about Bridget's approach is her entrepreneurial mindset toward the role. From sending cold emails and booking her own appearances to securing sponsors and managing relationships, she embraced every aspect of the business side of being Miss Maryland. Her insights on overcoming rejection, building confidence, and learning to say "their loss" when faced with a "no" offer practical wisdom for competitors and professionals alike. The conversation takes an emotional turn when discussing her Miss America experience, where she reclaimed her power by performing "Don't Rain on My Parade"—the very song that once led to rejection from musical theater programs. Through tears of pride backstage, she embodied what it means to transform failure into triumph. Her advice to want the state title more than the national crown, to build genuine sisterhood connections, and to celebrate others' successes knowing your time will come rings with authenticity and wisdom.Whether you're competing for a title, facing professional challenges, or simply navigating life's roadblocks, Bridget's story reminds us that our greatest setbacks often prepare us for our most meaningful successes. #52 Crowned & Candid: Paris Matthews, Miss Utah 2024
Send us Fan MailWhat happens when you refuse to give up on a dream, even after 13 straight losses? Paris Matthews, Miss Utah 2024, reveals the extraordinary journey that led her from wearing "evening gowns from Ross" at her first pageant to representing Utah on the Miss America stage. This conversation peels back the glossy veneer of pageantry to explore something far more valuable: the power of authentic self-compassion. Paris shares how she lost 13 competitions without ever placing before finally winning her first local title. Rather than becoming discouraged, she found value in each competition, viewing the Miss America program as professional development that enhanced her career as a child life specialist—a healthcare professional who helps children cope with hospital experiences.Paris' candid revelations about her mental health struggles following Miss America are particularly poignant. Despite professionally teaching coping skills to children, she found herself experiencing panic attacks and anxiety that required her to practice the self-compassion she preaches. Her vulnerability in discussing these challenges demonstrates the courage that defines her reign far more than any crown. The most powerful takeaway? "Don't count yourself out." Paris describes how she finally succeeded when she stopped trying to be what she thought judges wanted and instead embraced her authentic self—from her natural speaking style to her passion for helping hospitalized children through her "Power of Play" initiative. As she prepares to crown her successor, Paris reflects on maintaining identity beyond the title and the importance of allowing yourself to dream big enough to include even the seemingly impossible.Whether you're interested in pageantry or simply seeking inspiration to persist through repeated setbacks, this conversation offers wisdom applicable far beyond the stage. In this revealing conversation, Miss North Carolina 2024, Carrie Everett, brings us into the heart of her unlikely path to the title and the profound lessons she discovered along the way.As a child of Liberian immigrants who moved across the country to attend an HBCU, Keri's story defies conventional pageant narratives. With astonishing candor, she reveals how she won her state title on her first attempt with just $40 to register for her local competition and a $275 evening gown from Poshmark. "God does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called," she reflects, challenging the notion that financial resources determine pageant success. The conversation takes us through the emotional rollercoaster of balancing full-time university studies with state responsibilities, navigating the political complexities of promoting diversity and inclusion in pageantry, and the heartbreaking experience of competing at Miss America while battling severe illness. #49 Crowned & Candid: Jordan Naylor, Miss Alaska 2024
Send us Fan MailWhat happens when your dream comes true? For Jordan Naylor, Miss Alaska 2024, claiming the crown was just the beginning of a transformative journey – one that followed directly after her reign as Miss Alaska USA. With less than a week between titles, Jordan stepped into her role with a unique dual-system perspective and a crystal-clear vision: build a sustainable legacy for every future Miss Alaska who follows.Unlike titleholders from larger pageant states, Jordan navigates the distinct challenges of representing Alaska – a place where rubber boots often replace high heels, volcanic eruptions can disrupt appearances, and reaching the state's 229 villages requires extraordinary commitment. Her candid reflections reveal the delicate balance between full-time work as a Development Director for Go Red for Women and her responsibilities as Miss Alaska. With refreshing honesty, she admits that being selective with her time and occasionally "selfish" with her choices has been crucial to her success. The true value of Jordan's story lies in her practical wisdom. She meticulously built relationships with national coaches, secured new sponsorships, revived workshops for contestants, and formed unexpected partnerships with organizations like the Anchorage Fire Department. Her approach wasn't about maximizing appearances, but rather creating infrastructure that would outlast her reign – a strategy born from her professional expertise in relationship-building and development.Jordan also addresses what many titleholders hesitate to discuss: the emotional "rut" that follows national competition. Having experienced both sides of the crown as a perpetual runner-up before winning her titles, she offers compassionate insight into the psychological journey of pageantry. Her analogy of Extra Tuffs – Alaska's iconic rubber boots that slowly mold to the wearer's feet – perfectly captures how each titleholder must create their own unique path.Ready to embark on your own pageant journey or simply fascinated by what happens behind the crown? Listen as Jordan reveals why you should never give up on your dreams, how to navigate whatever the year throws your way, and why the value you get out depends entirely on what you put in. "You cannot fully love yourself without fully knowing yourself," she shares, explaining how embracing her identity allowed her to prioritize her health in ways she never could before.Through her work as a preventative medicine educator serving underserved communities, Hayley has witnessed firsthand how lifestyle-related illnesses disproportionately affect Native Hawaiians. After her partner lost her mother to a preventable heart attack at just 45, her mission became deeply personal. Now, she champions an approach to wellness built on small, sustainable changes rather than overwhelming overhauls—an extra 15 minutes of sleep, a morning high-five in the mirror, one additional vegetable in your meals. What makes this conversation particularly powerful is Hayley's willingness to discuss the challenges of her year, from experiencing burnout to encountering resistance within her own community. Yet through it all, she discovered that the authenticity she initially feared might be criticized became her greatest strength. Her self-described personality as a "local tita"—more tomboyish, blunt, and less concerned with conventional pageant polish—resonated with audiences who found her approachable and genuine.Hayley's message of "Aloha is for everyone" encapsulates her belief that we all possess the capacity to breathe life into ourselves and others. This Hawaiian concept of endless compassion, respect, and love offers what she calls "the healing antidote America needs" in divided times. Whether you're facing health challenges, supporting a loved one through illness, or simply seeking to live more authentically, Hayley's insights remind us that self-compassion isn't selfish—it's essential for helping others. As she beautifully puts it: "You can only take care of other people when your cup is full." Free App Download: Click here to download the Fearlessly Authentic App! For Raechel Warren, Miss Nebraska 2024, that final attempt led to the crown and a transformative year of service that's coming to a close with only 45 days remaining. In this candid conversation, Raechel reveals the powerful mindset shift that finally unlocked her success after years of top-five finishes. "I am her and I just have to go get the crown," she realized, embracing a sense of detachment from the outcome while still pouring everything into her preparation. This balance—caring deeply without being defined by results—created her most relaxing and enjoyable state competition experience ever. The business side of being Miss Nebraska required entrepreneurial spirit and strategic thinking. #45 Crowned & Candid: Kaylee Wolfensberger, Miss Montana 2024
Send us Fan MailWhat really happens after the crown goes on and the cameras stop? In this brand new series, Crowned & Candid, I’m sitting down with Kaylee Wolfensberger, Miss Montana 2024, to talk about the realities of state titleholder life; the stuff most people don’t see.Kaylee is only 20 and went into Miss Montana just planning to get some experience. She wasn’t expecting to win, and that pressure-free mindset? It allowed her to show up fully as herself… and walk away with the crown. But with that win came a crash course in doing it all—often alone.Unlike titleholders from bigger states with teams and budgets, Kaylee handles everything on her own. She’s scheduling appearances, driving hours across rural Montana, managing her initiative, creating content, going to college full-time, and working a job to fund her Miss America prep. It’s a lot. The mental load is heavy, the learning curve is steep, and the growth? Whew. It’s real. She’s also super honest about what didn’t go as planned—like her piano performance at Miss America. But instead of letting that define her, she found new perspective and turned her focus to growing the Miss Montana program for the next generation.Kaylee’s initiative, Healing Harmonies, brings music education to underserved kids—work that’s personal to her because music was her safe space during a difficult time. Some of the kids she visits will only meet one person in a crown all year… and that person is her. This conversation is raw, real, and full of wisdom for anyone curious about what it actually takes to wear the crown. #44 Battling Burnout: Why High Achievers Struggle & How to Heal
Send us Fan MailFeeling drained by pageant prep? Been there. If you're finding yourself pushing harder but enjoying it less, you're not alone. Burnout shows up in sneaky ways - not just physical exhaustion, but emotional depletion, constant comparison, and that awful loop of "I'm doing all the things… so why does it feel like it's never enough?"In pageantry, burnout can be especially tough because it chips away at the very things that matter most: your presence, your passion, your authenticity. You could have the most polished performance on stage, but if the joy is gone, the judges will feel that disconnect. And chances are… so will you. What I've learned, both for myself and through coaching, is that burnout doesn’t mean you're broken. It's just a signal. A little red flag from your mind and body saying, "Hey, I need a breather." Rest isn't weakness. Stepping back doesn't mean you're giving up. It means you're smart enough to protect the parts of you that matter most.Tune in now to learn more! Free App Download: Click here to download the Fearlessly Authentic App! #41 From First Runner-Up to...?: Overcoming the Fear of ‘Backsliding’ in Competition
Send us Fan MailFear of "backsliding" in pageant placement haunts even the most accomplished contestants. That nagging anxiety—what if I don't do as well as last year? What will people think if I was first runner-up and don't even make top five this time? As a former Miss Wisconsin who lived this exact experience, I understand this pressure intimately. When we've tasted success in pageantry, we often create impossible expectations for ourselves. We compare ourselves not just to other contestants but to previous versions of ourselves, forgetting how much we've grown in a year. This mindset trap attaches our self-worth to placement results, creating a pressure cooker of anxiety that can sabotage our performance. The truth? Every competition brings a completely different playing field. New judges with different preferences. New contestants with unique strengths. And most importantly—a new you with additional life experience and personal growth. Your placement changes don't define your value; they simply reflect the inherently subjective nature of pageantry in constantly changing circumstances.Breaking free requires a fundamental shift in perspective. Instead of focusing on factors beyond your control (judges' opinions, other contestants' performances), direct your energy toward what you can influence: your mindset work, preparation quality, and connection to your "why." When you focus on personal growth rather than placement, you never truly "backslide"—you simply evolve. Free App Download: Click here to download the Fearlessly Authentic App! #39 More Than a Number: Why Contestant Lineup Doesn't Define Your Success
Send us Fan MailAnxiety about contestant numbers is a persistent yet unnecessary worry in pageantry. From my experience as both a contestant and a judge, I'm debunking the myths that keep competitors fixated on lineup placement instead of performance.Your contestant number is beyond your control, and focusing on it only diverts energy from your preparation. Judges don't score based on order - we evaluate each contestant individually, remembering your energy, authenticity, and vision, not your number. The myths don't hold up. First contestants aren't at a disadvantage, last contestants don’t have an edge, and middle contestants don't get overlooked. Success comes from mindset, confidence, preparation, and connection - not lineup placement.I've been contestant number one at Miss America, and my struggles came from mindset, not order. The key? Focus on what you can control. When you shift from numbers to growth, your results will reflect your effort - not your position in line. #38 Remembering Your Worth
Send us Fan MailWorthiness sits at the core of how we view ourselves, yet many of us struggle to grasp this fundamental truth: we are worthy simply because we exist. This episode explores the critical difference between inherent worth and contextual value – a distinction that transforms how we handle rejection, failure, and self-doubt.Growing up with conditional approval taught me to equate accomplishments with worthiness. I became the "responsible one," the helper, the achiever – tying my identity to external validation until failures felt like proof of my unworthiness. Through years of healing, I've discovered that worthiness isn't something we earn but something we remember, buried beneath layers of conditioning and comparison. The most liberating realization? Worth is unchanging while value fluctuates. Worth is who you are; value is how you show up. When rejection happens, it's not evidence of unworthiness but simply misalignment. By practicing authenticity over performance, setting boundaries without guilt, and surrounding ourselves with people who see our inherent value, we can break free from the endless pursuit of external validation.Whether you're weathering hardship, facing self-doubt, or trying to silence limiting beliefs, remember this truth: you are worthy always, period. Your mistakes don't define you. Your achievements don't increase your worth. You are enough exactly as you are, and that will never change.
