Ian breaks down Gould’s identity as a “tinkerer” A systems thinker who has repeatedly transformed clubs by rebuilding structures, pathways, and culture from the ground up. From his time at the Panthers to his influence at the Bulldogs, the episode explores how Gould’s strengths have fueled long-term success. But there’s a flip side. The same instinct to constantly refine and adjust may also create friction, particularly when it clashes with coaching autonomy. Through real NRL examples, including Ivan Cleary’s ultimatum, this episode examines the fine line between innovation and over-involvement, and what happens when strengths become limitations. More importantly, this isn’t just about rugby league. It’s about you. Whether you're an athlete, coach, or business leader, this episode challenges you to understand your own performance identity, where you thrive, where you drain energy, and how to operate in your zone for maximum impact. Join the Game Plan training today. https://www.ianhawkinscoaching.com/gameplanmembership Episode Summary: What really separates good from elite? In this episode, Ian Hawkins sits down with former NRL star Chris Lawrence to unpack the reality behind high performance. From debuting as a teenager to representing Australia, Lawrence shares raw insights into playing through serious injuries, setting bold goals under pressure, and the mental resilience required to compete at the highest level. His story of returning from a devastating hip dislocation; setting a 90-day comeback target and backing it with relentless action; highlights the power of belief, discipline, and clarity The conversation goes beyond sport into leadership, identity, and life after football. As founder of One Training, Lawrence now helps athletes and individuals build confidence beyond performance, showing how purpose away from sport actually enhances it. From goal setting and subconscious patterns to clarity of role and standards, this episode breaks down the real gap between good and elite. It’s not talent; it’s consistency, discipline, and who you become when no one’s watching. About the Guest: Chris Lawrence Former NRL Player | Managing Director (One Training) Still in high school at just 17 years and 283 days old, Chris Lawrence became the youngest first-grade debutant for the Wests Tigers in round 21, 2006. A fleet-footed centre for the first part of his storied career, Lawrence represented Australia at the end of 2010 and added his final five Test caps the following year. Renowned as a great clubman and a reliable performer, Lawrence transitioned into a second-rower in the latter half of 2015 and stayed there for the remainder of his playing days. After overcoming serious hip and facial injuries, Lawrence finally hung up the boots at the end of 2020 with the distinction of being one of just three men, along with great mates Robbie Farah and Benji Marshall, to play 250 NRL matches for the Wests Tigers. Founder & Managing Director applying elite sport principles to business. I explore what separates good from elite, and apply the relentless standards of professional sport to business and leadership. In elite sport, performance is visible, standards are unforgiving, pressure is constant, and there is nowhere to hide. The same is true in business. Most leaders are good. Few operate at elite standards. The difference isn’t talent, it’s clarity under pressure, disciplined execution, accountability, and alignment when it matters most. This page is for ambitious business leaders who care about performance, love sport, and want to elevate from strong performance to elite execution. I’m building conversations & curated rooms , where ambitious leaders connect and raise their standards. #274 – NRL | Did “We Can’t Win The Comp” Trigger the Dragons’ Collapse?

In this episode, Ian Hawkins unpacks the moment St. George Illawarra Dragons coach Shane Flanagan said, “We can’t win the comp”; and the ripple effect that followed. What seemed like honesty to some may have quietly planted doubt across the playing group. Because in elite sport, belief isn’t just spoken; it’s felt. When that belief cracks, even slightly, it shows up in performance, decision-making, and how players respond under pressure The impact doesn’t stop with players. Ian explores how messaging shapes fan energy, and how losing hope can shift the entire environment around a club. Drawing on insights from greats like Wayne Bennett, the episode highlights the importance of alignment; players, staff, and supporters all pulling in the same direction. The takeaway is clear: words carry weight. Whether you’re leading a team, business, or family, the language you use can either build belief or slowly erode it. In this episode, Ian Hawkins uses powerful moments from sport; including record-breaking celebrations and crowd surges; to unpack a deeper lesson around people power. What looks like chaos on the surface is actually momentum in action. When enough people align behind a shared belief or direction, even the strongest resistance becomes irrelevant. It’s a compelling reflection on how quickly the tide can turn when collective energy buildsBut this isn’t just about sport; it’s about leadership, culture, and everyday environments. Ian explores how the “vocal minority” often controls outcomes, not because they’re right, but because others stay silent. The challenge is clear; step up, be assertive, and create clarity through strong processes and accountability. Whether you’re leading a team, running a business, or navigating community sport, real change happens when people align, take ownership, and move in the same direction. In this episode, Ian Hawkins tackles one of the most confronting realities in youth sport: the unintended impact of well-meaning parents. Drawing on real-world examples, coaching experience, and personal reflection, Ian breaks down how common behaviours; like over-instruction, emotional reactions, and focusing on outcomes; can create pressure, reduce confidence, and ultimately limit a young athlete’s developmentThe episode shifts into practical, powerful solutions. Instead of praising talent or results, Ian highlights the importance of reinforcing what kids can control; effort, attitude, teamwork, and enjoyment. He also challenges parents and coaches to lead by example, regulate their own emotions, and create an environment where children feel supported regardless of performance. The issue isn’t effort or ability; it’s the constant shifting of goalposts and the failure to acknowledge how far you’ve already comeIan breaks down how misalignment between identity, goals, game plan, and purpose creates friction, confusion, and stagnation. When these elements are aligned, clarity and momentum return quickly. The episode offers a practical reset; pause, recognise progress, reconnect to what you’re in control of, and realign with your purpose. This is a must-listen for high performers who feel stuck despite making progress; a reminder that growth isn’t always about doing more, but about seeing clearly.About the Host:Ian Hawkins is dedicated to showing how sports can transform lives. Ian Hawkins and Steve break down whether anyone can realistically stop the red-hot Penrith Panthers, who have started the season with ruthless dominance on both sides of the ball. From suffocating defence to Nathan Cleary’s complete control in attack, the Panthers look locked in; while the Broncos showed resilience with a gutsy comeback and the Storm raised concerns around their ability to close out big games. Across the round, momentum, possession, and decision-making under pressure proved to be the difference between contenders and pretenders The episode also dives into the Bulldogs’ defensive strength but attacking struggles, the Warriors’ forward dominance, and the inconsistency holding teams like the Sharks and Knights back. With power rankings shifting, SuperCoach movers emerging, and early Wooden Spoon contenders starting to take shape, this is a raw, opinion-driven breakdown of where every team really stands after three rounds. The big question remains; are the Panthers already too far ahead, or is someone building quietly to challenge them? About the Host: Ian Hawkins is dedicated to showing how sports can transform lives. In this episode, Ian Hawkins unpacks the hidden impact of stress in youth sport and how it often shows up as injury, tightness, loss of confidence, or repeated setbacks. Drawing on his own coaching experience and insights backed by sports medicine, Ian highlights how pressure; from expectations, selection battles, school demands, and subtle parental influence; can quietly accumulate without young athletes ever voicing it. Instead, it shows up in the body and in performance The episode shifts into practical solutions for parents and coaches; focusing on creating safe environments, improving communication, and helping young athletes focus on what they can control. Ian breaks down the importance of understanding each child’s unique wiring, removing unnecessary pressure, and guiding rather than reacting; especially in emotional moments like post-game conversations. The message is clear: reduce stress, build connection, and you don’t just improve performance; you protect your child’s love of the game and set them up for long-term growth. Join the Game Plan training today. https://www.ianhawkinscoaching.com/gameplanmembershipEpisode Summary:Traditional sports journalism is under pressure; and in this episode, Ian Hawkins argues it may be in slow decline. The catalyst? A leaked text message from Melbourne Storm CEO Justin Rodski to NRL boss Andrew Abdo, asking him to “apply the blowtorch” to Parramatta over the Zac Lomax contract situation. What frustrated Ian wasn’t just the message itself; it was the public defence of it by senior journalist Brent Read, and what that defence reveals about access, bias, and influence within mainstream rugby league mediaThis episode is a candid critique of sanitised coverage, club relationships, and conflict-of-interest blind spots across traditional platforms. Ian contrasts that with the rise of independent media voices who aren’t tied to club access or television contracts. The core message is clear: when journalism protects relationships instead of asking hard questions, fans lose. If you care about transparency, accountability, and authentic opinion in rugby league, it may be time to rethink where you get your sports news.About the Host:Ian Hawkins is dedicated to showing how sports can transform lives. In this reflective solo episode, Ian Hawkins shares a personal experience that shifted his perspective on stress, injury, and emotional load. What began as a stubborn stye during a holiday quickly became a deeper lesson. Despite feeling “not stressed,” his body told a different story. Through kinesiology, emotional clearing, and intentional nervous system regulation, Ian uncovered an underlying theme; what am I not seeing? The physical symptom wasn’t just an infection; it was a signalThe episode expands into a broader message for high performers. Injuries aren’t always just biomechanics, stress isn’t only workload, and fatigue isn’t simply lack of sleep. Emotional alignment drives physical state. Ian connects this insight to his parents’ health journeys and to a client whose back pain resurfaced during a major life shift; highlighting how the body mirrors emotional pressure and perceived lack of support. The takeaway is clear: stop asking “Why is this happening to me?” and start asking “What is this trying to show me?” Because once you interpret the signal correctly, recovery can accelerate.About the Host:Ian Hawkins is dedicated to showing how sports can transform lives. Big presence, heavy energy, carrying pain you couldn’t quite name. But underneath it all was an empath; a man who had absorbed other people’s emotions his entire life and confused sensitivity with weakness. In this powerful episode, Ian Hawkins shares the story of a long-term coaching client who transformed from emotional sponge and self-blamer into a man with boundaries, clarity, and leadership. It’s a raw exploration of identity, accountability, and what happens when empathy is finally protected instead of exploitedThe conversation reframes a common narrative around men and emotion. Empathy is not weakness; unprotected empathy is. Without boundaries, people-pleasing turns into resentment, burnout, and identity loss. But empathy with structure becomes strength. The turning point came when this client chose accountability over survival; shifting from reacting to life to designing it. This episode is a call to men who feel deeply, carry others’ burdens, and struggle to say no. In this episode, Ian Hawkins unpacks the remarkable comeback story of Javon Andrews, who fractured his C4 and C5 vertebrae in a rugby league match and was told he would never play again. Instead of accepting the diagnosis as destiny, Andrews rebuilt not just his body, but his belief system. Thirty months later, he returned to the field, earned a development deal with the West Tigers, and is now pushing toward an NRL debutBut this episode goes deeper than one athlete’s comeback. Ian shares his own history of serious injuries; broken feet, spinal fractures, knee damage, and repeated warnings to stop running and lifting. The core message is powerful: a diagnosis is information, not identity. Recovery begins in the mind. In this solo episode, Ian Hawkins reflects on three moments from a single training run that revealed how quickly conditions can change, how easily rhythm can be lost, and why resets matter more than momentum. Feeling strong with the wind at his back, Ian unpacks the danger of assuming you’ve “got it sorted” when life feels easy, and why awareness during good conditions is just as important as resilience during hard ones. The episode explores the importance of understanding your personal rhythm, recognising what knocks you off it, and knowing how to return when disruption hits. From being jolted out of flow by a near-miss with a car, to the grounding power of barefoot recovery, Ian connects physical experience with mental clarity. Rather than getting lost in tactics and stats, this episode leans into fan-driven debate strengths, weaknesses, pressure points, underrated and overrated players, ladder predictions, mental edge, and SuperCoach value picks, exactly the conversations footy fans have over a couple of schooners. The pair dive deep into South Sydney’s injury concerns versus their explosive left-edge potential, question whether the Tigers’ on-field growth can overcome ongoing off-field chaos, and debate whether Brisbane can handle being the hunted after recent success. Melbourne’s relentless standards, elite spine, and “rinse and repeat” culture get their usual respect, with discussion around how roster changes might test their depth without derailing their consistency.Across the episode, listeners get bold ladder calls, rep-team smokies, Dally M predictions, SuperCoach insights, and honest opinions the hosts fully expect to be challenged by fans. Ian challenges listeners who are comfortable staying where they are, dismiss compliments, avoid accountability, or prefer to figure things out slowly and alone. With trademark honesty, he contrasts the illusion of progress through comfort and AI-driven shortcuts with the real, uncomfortable work that meaningful growth requires.Drawing parallels between sport and life, Ian explains why coaching works so powerfully in athletic environments feedback, standards, structure, and accountability, yet is often resisted in personal development. He explores the reality that true growth will challenge your thinking, emotions, habits, and even your relationships. When you change, the people around you are affected, and not all of them will welcome it first. That friction, Ian argues, is not a warning sign; it’s part of the process. The episode also reframes from coaching as a catalyst for action rather than endless self-reflection. Ian shares why ideas without execution die quietly, how external perspective accelerates progress, and why even the greatest performers can’t do it alone. This episode is both a wake-up call and an invitation: if you’re ready to leave comfort behind, accept accountability, and stop letting potential go unused, coaching may be exactly what you need.About the Host:Ian Hawkins is dedicated to showing how sports can transform lives. Using a personal story about playing golf with a highly skilled childhood friend, Ian unpacks how comparison can quietly trigger overthinking, anxiety, and the urge to prove ourselves, not because others are better, but because of unresolved beliefs about belonging and self-worth.Ian challenges the common assumption that intimidation comes from external pressure. Instead, he explains how these reactions are often rooted in early childhood patterns, particularly the subconscious drive to gain approval, feel accepted, and make our parents proud. He breaks down how this pattern shows up physically, mentally, and emotionally, and why placing others on a pedestal causes us to give away our power and disrupt our natural performance. The episode offers practical, actionable strategies to shift this cycle, starting with self-awareness and journaling, and progressing toward rewriting the internal story that drives performance anxiety. Ian shows listeners how to move from performing for approval to showing up authentically, resulting in greater confidence, consistency, and calm under pressure. It’s a powerful lesson in reclaiming self-control, improving performance, and enjoying sport and life without unnecessary self-imposed pressure.About the Host:Ian Hawkins is dedicated to showing how sports can transform lives. Will challenges outdated thinking around education, certificates, and identity, arguing that leadership, coachability, discipline, and adaptability are often an athlete’s greatest assets. From NRL stars to Olympic competitors juggling work and training, the episode provides real-world insight into financial literacy, decision-making, career planning, and avoiding common traps like lifestyle creep and poor investment advice.Beyond elite sport, this episode speaks directly to anyone striving to balance performance, family, health, and purpose. Through personal stories, fan moments, and practical frameworks; including Will’s “athlete health check” approach; listeners are reminded that true high performance comes from balance. Recording from holiday mode but with serious cricket insight, Ian Hawkins is joined by Steve for a relaxed yet sharp “weekend review” that breaks down Australia retaining the Ashes in just 11 days, despite injuries, rotation, and constant scrutiny around the batting order. From Mitchell Starc’s brilliance to Travis Head’s match-defining impact, the conversation highlights the depth, adaptability, and ego-free mindset driving Australia’s success. The discussion doesn’t shy away from England’s struggles. England’s aggressive “Bazball” philosophy is put under the microscope, with pointed observations about poor shot selection, lack of accountability, and an inability to handle the mental grind of Test cricket in Australian conditions. The pair examine selection missteps, the absence of a specialist spinner, and post-match interviews that seemed to underline just how far England were from truly competing. Comparisons are drawn to Ashes legends who earned their reputations by succeeding in Australia, reinforcing why this series remains the ultimate proving ground. The episode also broadens out to the Big Bash League, reacting to one of the most extraordinary BBL matches on record as the Heat chased down a massive total against the Scorchers. Young talent like Cooper Connolly, breakout performances, crowd engagement, and what the BBL needs to thrive post-Ashes are all explored. With light-hearted detours into boxing, rugby league, and off-season headlines, this episode blends sharp cricket analysis with genuine fan conversation, making it a must-listen for anyone following Australian cricket this summer.About the Host:Ian Hawkins is dedicated to showing how sports can transform lives. Speaking not as a selector or administrator, but as a passionate fan, the host breaks down why this dominant result may be masking deeper structural issues, particularly an aging squad, a fragile batting order, and looming transition challenges that Australian cricket has struggled with before. The episode reflects on past mistakes made during the post-golden-era transition of the late 2000s and early 2010s, warning against complacency after success. While Australia’s bowling attack remains elite, concerns are raised about workload, injuries, and the lack of like-for-like replacements. The discussion evaluates emerging talents such as Cameron Green, Xavier Bartlett, Jhye Richardson, and Cooper Connolly, while questioning whether gradual transition or bold selection calls are needed now, before multiple retirements hit at once.Beyond team selection, the episode widens the lens to examine Australia’s talent pipeline in comparison to India’s seemingly endless production line of elite cricketers. With participation numbers, fan engagement, and development pathways all under scrutiny, this episode invites listeners into a genuine conversation about the future direction of Australian cricket. It’s a thoughtful, fan-driven analysis that balances celebration with caution, and challenges supporters to think critically about how sustained success is built.About the Host:Ian Hawkins is dedicated to showing how sports can transform lives. Rather than focusing solely on exercise routines, nutrition trends, or biohacks, the host challenges listeners to look deeper, arguing that emotional regulation and unresolved stress stored in the body are the real foundations of long-term physical health. Through personal reflection and lived experience, the episode explores how persistent injuries, chronic pain, and recurring health setbacks often stem from unprocessed emotional and mental tension.Using compelling sporting examples, including Michael Clarke, Shane Watson, Tom Trbojevic, and Cam Green. The episode connects elite athletic performance with emotional load, pressure, and identity. The discussion illustrates how the body communicates imbalance through injury, and how athletes (and everyday people) can become trapped in cycles of breakdown when emotional stress is ignored. The host shares his own journey through recurring injuries, acupuncture, rehabilitation, and emotional self-work, highlighting how addressing internal stressors unlocked physical resilience he was once told he’d never regain.Ultimately, this episode calls for a holistic health model, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual, encouraging listeners to set clear, measurable goals for 2026 that go beyond surface-level fitness. It’s a reflective, thought-provoking conversation designed to help athletes, sports fans, and high performers build sustainable health, prevent burnout, and show up stronger not just in sport, but in life.About the Host:Ian Hawkins is dedicated to showing how sports can transform lives. At the heart of the episode is Ponting’s “Three V’s” of leadership, Vision, Values, and Validation, and how truly great leaders don’t just talk about these principles, but live them consistently. Ian connects these ideas to sport, business, family, and everyday life, showing how clarity of direction and shared standards remove emotion, create alignment, and drive performance. The episode also explores a lesser-discussed challenge faced by athletes after retirement: the loss of competition, edge, and belonging. Ponting’s reflections highlight how deeply wired competitors are for challenge, and how performance often drops when that sense of contest disappears. Ian expands on this by encouraging listeners to reintroduce healthy competition into their lives, not at the expense of others, but as a mindset that brings out their best and lifts those around them.Rounding out the discussion is the importance of connection, inspired by the irreplaceable feeling of a winning change room. Ian explains how that shared sense of purpose, identity, and belonging can be recreated in teams, workplaces, families, and friendships. The episode is both reflective and practical, offering listeners clear actions to apply elite sporting principles to life, leadership, and long-term fulfillment.About the Host:Ian Hawkins is dedicated to showing how sports can transform lives. From knowing when to “let go of the bike seat” to shaping environments that encourage fearless learning, this episode delivers powerful insights for coaches, parents, leaders, and anyone serious about developing people. From boardroom dysfunction to the long-term damage being done to loyal supporters, the conversation goes deep into why the Tigers’ problems aren’t just on-field, but cultural and structural. The episode then shifts gears through some of the weekend’s most talked-about moments; Oscar Piastri’s frustrating position in Formula 1 politics, a bizarre WBBL incident that saw a match abandoned after a pitch roller ran over a cricket ball, and the electric scenes from the Australian Open golf, where packed galleries and clutch performances showed why Australian sport, when done right, is world-class.The heart of the episode is a detailed, passionate analysis of the Ashes series so far. While Australia has rebuilt itself in the post–sandpaper era with a clear cultural direction under Pat Cummins, England appears stuck in a rigid “Bazball” ideology that’s no longer serving them in Australian conditions. The episode dissects how Australia’s openness, individual expression, and team cohesion contrast with England’s increasingly prescriptive, ultra-aggressive style, which seems to ignore the unique strengths and preferences of individual players.Through examples such as Will Jacks’ standout performance, the host highlights how players outside the Bazball “bubble” show more adaptability and situational awareness. From poor preparation to questionable shot selection, including batting coach comments that stunned the cricket world, the narrative shows a team relying on hype over fundamentals. The conversation expands beyond cricket, tying identity back to individual performance, leadership, and alignment in any team environment. With insights from past guests like high-performance strategist Darren Holder, the episode underscores that knowing who you are, individually and collectively, is at the core of sustained success.Listeners walk away not only with a sharper understanding of England’s tactical and cultural missteps but also with a broader reflection on how clarity, alignment, and self-awareness drive high performance in sport, business, and life.About the Host:Ian Hawkins is dedicated to showing how sports can transform lives. Marty opens up about the unexpected challenges of leaving New Zealand cricket, moving across the world, and rebuilding his identity in a country where nobody knew his name and cricket barely registered on the sporting radar. Through honesty and humour, he shares how culture shock, financial struggle, and loneliness forced him to rethink what success and belonging really look like. From coaching in the U.S. Major League Cricket pathway to working alongside cricket icons like Ricky Ponting, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Travis Head, Marty reveals what truly drives high-performing teams: clear communication, trust, alignment, and a deep sense of belonging. He explains why “11 people pulling in the same direction” matters more than any tactic, and how the best coaches use clarity, directness, and care to unlock peak performance. The conversation also explores burnout, motivation, community, and how to lead people in a way that actually strengthens them. Marty’s candid stories, from cultural differences in America to mentoring top emerging talent, deliver practical insights for athletes, coaches, and anyone striving to lead with purpose and impact. It’s a grounded, powerful reminder that leadership is human first, tactical second.About the Guest:Marty KainNew Zealand-American CricketerMarty has spent his career playing and coaching professional Cricket in New Zealand, England & now USA.Well known for his energetic and loving personality, team focused approach & ability to get the best out of people.Marty specializes in preparing teams and individuals for major tournaments, focusing on priming fielding and batting while fostering a cohesive team environment that drives everyone towards a shared goal.Links:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/martykainigsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ%3D%3D&utm_source=qr | https://www.instagram.com/mkcricket?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ%3D%3D&utm_source=qrLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marty-kain-b9b260198/?utm_source=share&utm_campaign=share_via&utm_content=profile&utm_medium=ios_appAbout the Host:Ian Hawkins is dedicated to showing how sports can transform lives. Join the Game Plan training today. https://www.ianhawkinscoaching.com/gameplanmembershipEpisode Summary:In this week’s Sport Is Life Week in Review, Ian is joined by Steve to unpack another big few days across rugby league and cricket. They kick off with the never-ending boardroom circus at the Wests Tigers, what it means for the club’s future, and why losing Shane Richardson would be a massive blow. From there, they flip to the optimism around the reborn Bears as they lock in their first signings; steady halfback Toby Sexton and English outside back Harry Newman, and how a Dolphins-style blueprint could set them up for long-term success. The chat then moves through a wild WBBL finish abandoned one ball short, Alan Stajcic’s passionate press conference on Australian football’s infighting, and the official death of Rugby 360 for the next two years – plus what that means for Zac Lomax, Ryan Papenhuyzen and the agents who steered them towards uncertain futures. The boys also touch on Broncos prospect Kobe Black’s likely move to the Raiders and how Ricky Stuart could be the perfect mentor for a young half.To close, Ian and Steve dive deep into the second Ashes Test at the Gabba; selection debates around four quicks versus Nathan Lyon, whether Usman Khawaja gets one last home Test, Mark Wood’s fragility, Joe Root’s mindset comments on day–night cricket, and why England already look mentally cooked. Ian also reflects on the huge reaction to his Ian Chappell episode, the social media blowback, and what it says about opinion, legacy and sporting heroes in the modern era.About the Host:Ian Hawkins is dedicated to showing how sports can transform lives.
