Rat Snakes, Ground Hogs, and Milkweed
https://3speak.tv/watch?v=senorcoconut/ufvkkbqu Hello again fellow homesteaders! Y'all ever have to deal with snakes around your house? See we came from the big city where really the only kinds of snakes you run into are those who try to swindle you in any way they can... Well, there are the zoos and aquariums and such, along with the reptilian collectors you could run into from time to time. In the wild though, all you will find in NYC in that swine type of a person we sometimes call snakes! This video's actually an old one(ish). it's from a couple early springs ago, it might have been our second garden since having moved from the city to the woods. Gardening is a long learning game of trial and error. There are countless things that can go wrong, and you cannot have a perfect system that works for everyone, everywhere... Too many variables in the climate, fauna and the ground itself. That's actually what the word "terroir" is all about you know. When something is made in a specific region, part of the way it tastes is because of all those things, the air, the different minerals in the soil, the altitude, the humidity.. everything is a factor. So don't call your sparkling wine Champagne if it isn't made there please. I was in the garden taking care of some holes in the fence, to keep the family of groundhogs from eating everything that grows, everything we eat... and this giant rat snake came into view, so I had to take a video for you guys. It's probably close to 2 meters long... That was a big one, and I like them because they happen to be the snakes that eat the most rodents around these parts. And living in an RV (caravan) those chipmunks and field mice fine ways to get in all the time. Well let me know what your snake accouters were like, I'd like to hear 'em. Rescued Firewood Real Cheap!!!
https://3speak.tv/watch?v=senorcoconut/uaqsempk Hello homesteaders and anyone using firewood to heat there home (or sell it in bundles)! This video's a short one but here we are with a load of fierwood we rescued from someone who did no longer wanted it. Granted he was selling it, he was also selling it at a third of the regular price of a cord of wood. What's a cord of wood you say? Well, that kind of depends from state to state... some places will not consider anything to be a cor unless they are 4 foot logs piled up 4 foot high and 8 foot long. Here in NY a ord should be split firwood that roughly makes up a 4 foot x 4foot x 8 foot pile when stacked. It's pretty much two large loads in a pickup truck. That's exactly what we got for $80 (typically aroun $250). We were just running out of the firewood we have for sale on our property and we had campers coming to stay for a long wekend... so this deal came at an awesom time. We had what we needed for the good people who decided to camp on our land!!! We've been scammed before with delivered firewood, this guy dropped off of a cord while I was at work, when I looke dat it I thought it was short, but he assured me it was a full cord... Once I piled it up it only made up a third of it. No way to get my money back though, he was convinced it was right. You see sometimes people will sell what's called a "face cord" and in deed that is exactly what a third of a cord is. So do your homework before you buy firewood for the first times... but perhaps this getting scammed liek that may be a right of passage in the heating with wood world. Buy Low, Sell High right? Well we sell something that is larger than your gas station bundles and for the same price. So maybe we aren't selling high but we are buying low for sure!!! Like I said folks this is a short one... Let me know how you get wood. Cutting Down a Tree Like A Hollywood Grip
https://3speak.tv/watch?v=senorcoconut/twevmsbq There was a time not so long ago when I had started to learn the skills of the Tree Service Industry. The reason behind that was because I had cut a couple of trees that were just a little too big for what little skills I had. I had a couple scares, but I ame through and used the knowlege I had from the film industry as a rigging grip for more than 20 years!!! Here's the blog post: I'm getting PAID to LEARN Something New ◇ YOU gotta LOVE That!!! It was a lot of fun, but right now my back is Fucked, and I am not allowed to work! I must heal... In this ideo you will see a quick description of what I did to take down a tree that wasn't coming down after cutting it the way I did. Let me know what you think, I'm just learning to do a bunch of things online to show you all what I've learned along the way on our homesteading journey. The Motherload of Golden Oysters
https://3speak.tv/watch?v=senorcoconut/toryewty Once again I'm just showing off what's in our little forest. The abundance of wild food is incredible... From mushrooms to wild game, it's all here!!! And we're only sitting on 20 acres. I know it's a lot of land/forest for a lot of people, but it's not really huge, in the grand scheme of it all. We get a first flush of Golden Oysters early spring, by mid fall or so we've had about 5 flushes. We typically only harvest what we can eat and a little more to give away, so in the end we collect about 50 pounds of oysters a year. We also dry some, just enough to have a little left over by the time spring rolls around again! This journey for knowledge of wild foods has become an incredible passion. I love it so much, wherever we go, I'm always on the look out for anything I can recognize and identify. It's a pretty awesome thing to be passionate about!!! And yo know, once you can identify a certain plant, or mushroom it's like the alphabet. You cannot forget what a "G" looks like right? Yeah, same same with nature. Easy DiY Rainwater Catchment System
https://3speak.tv/watch?v=senorcoconut/mlcpvqyx Here's this video of the water harvesting system we had for a while. You see, most RV's (at least in the US) have the tiny gutters alond side 'em. Here's the blog post we posted explaining all about how we did it.. a real diy project for sure! And it was all free too. We only wcollected things e already had with bits and pieces that we on the land we bought, left behind by the previous owners... Check out the post: https://peakd.com/offgrid/@senorcoconut/simple-rainwater-harvesting-rig-upycled-and-diy Then please do let me know what you think of it. I know the video isn't much to speak of, but I think you get the gist of it. Using Leverage to Move a Tree
https://3speak.tv/watch?v=senorcoconut/bvubspwy We had a tree fall across one of our roads righy in yhe way for our new camper delivery!!! With no help and not wanting to cut it up (could be a precious piece of lumber!) I engineered a way to move it alone. Please have a look here at our blog post with the full description of how I dit this using nothing but leverage: https://peakd.com/homesteading/@senorcoconut/primitive-engineering-moving-felled-trees-by-hand In the end, I ended up cutting the thing down to small pieces which we used as firewood. Either way it was a fun way to move such a piece of lumber using fulcrums and leverage... balanced properly it took no effort what so ever to move really. Great stuff, I kind of wish I would film the things we do a bit more, to show you all the things we figured out living off grid as we did for a few years. We're still on that same path, but we are now tied to the electrical grid and we have running water! The building of community is still on though! ////////////////////////////////////////////////////// If you would like to support our work, please consider sharing this video, subscribing to our channel, and giving us a like.
