Sermons of My Father

My father, Leonard (Lee) Ray Shaw, was a pastor for many years from Texas to Oklahoma to Mississippi. While the Lord called him to move on from ministry when I was young, his faith and joy in the scripture has never faltered. This page is my attempt to honor my father's past and share his many sermons. In my best estimate, these sermons take place between 1985 to 1995. As these sermons are copied from cassettes nearly 40 years old, some pulled from attics and others from dusty chests, the quality varies from tape to tape and may jump abruptly due to audio/editing issues. Enjoy!

Servanthood: Losing Your Rights and Finding Joy

In this episode of Sermons of My Father, Landon Shaw revisits a 1989 sermon where his father, Lee Shaw, preached on servanthood at Common Ground Church. Drawing from Philippians 1 and 2 Corinthians 8, this message shows that true servanthood means surrendering rights, choosing unity, and finding joy in trials.Lee Shaw confronts disputes over worship styles, hymnals, and traditions, reminding believers that everything becomes common under Christ. He warns that avoiding accountability, like in the tragic Green family murders in Texas, leads to destruction.Landon reflects on his family’s own struggles with silence, the courage of his sister to speak truth, and the balance of give and take in marriage. He connects his father’s words to Leonard Ravenhill’s revivalist teaching and to psychology, showing why sacrifice sustains relationships and selfishness erodes them.

What Is Confession: Facing Sin, Finding Forgiveness

What does it mean to truly confess? In this episode of Sermons of My Father, Landon Shaw explores a 1986 message from his father, Pastor Lee Shaw, on 1 John 1 and the meaning of confession.Too often, Christianity has been framed as “victorious Christian living,” where sin is ignored, perfection is claimed, or faith is inherited without question. This sermon confronts those ideas head-on. John’s words are blunt: if you say sin doesn’t matter, if you say you are perfect, or if you say you’ve always been a Christian, you are lying to yourself.Through scripture and Greek word study (hamartia — sin, homologeō — confession), Lee Shaw defines confession not as ritual but as honesty. To confess is to speak in agreement with fact and truth.Landon weaves in his own reflections, wrestling with guilt, accountability, and the paradox of forgiveness. Along the way, he brings in Carl Jung’s idea of the shadow, Socrates’ daimon, and the story of Peter’s denial and restoration. In this episode you’ll learn:What 1 John 1 teaches about sin and truthWhy confession is central to Christian faith and spiritual growthHow the Greek words hamartia and homologeō deepen our understandingWhy guilt, far from being destructive, is often a sign of light breaking inHow philosophy and psychology (Jung’s shadow, Socrates’ daimon) parallel the biblical call to confessionWhy accountability matters in faith, family, and lifeConfession is not groveling. It is truth-telling. It is accountability. And without it, there is no light.Available now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and iHeartRadio.

Serve and Obey: The Black-and-White Truth of 1 John

What does it really mean to know God? In this 1986 sermon on 1 John, Lee Shaw draws out the black-and-white clarity of the apostle John: light or darkness, truth or lies, obedience or disobedience. Through personal stories, Greek word studies, and sharp contrasts with Gnostic claims, this message calls believers to move beyond lip service into a life that actually walks like Jesus walked. In this episode, Landon Shaw revisits his father’s preaching with reflections on foundation, faith, and obedience — from milk to meat, from claiming to observing, from words to walk. Along the way, you’ll hear family stories, insights on Nathanael, and a moment where the shortest verse in Scripture, “Jesus wept,” becomes the heart of the call to serve and obey.Key themes include:The black-and-white contrasts of 1 JohnThe four key Greek words: ginosko, tereo, entole, peripateoSpiritual foundations and maturity (milk vs. meat)Observing, abiding, and walking in ChristIntegrity over intellectual claimsCompassion and obedience: Jesus weptAvailable on iTunes, Spotify, and iHeartRadio.#Faith #Sermons #1John #Obedience #ServeAndObey #ChristianPodcast

Little Children: Discipline That Hurts, Love That Heals

In 1986, my father preached Little Children, a sermon on 1 John 2:12–14, Hebrews 12:11, and Matthew 18:3. He unpacked the biblical Greek words technia (beloved children) and paideia (discipline that shapes character), showing how Christian discipline is more than punishment — it is love, guidance, and belonging.I revisit that sermon through the lens of my own family. Lucas’s childhood prayers, Rebecca’s quick negotiations, Corey’s fearless fire, and my own whiny, attention-seeking ways all reflect what it means to grow as “little children” in faith and in life. This is a journey through scripture, memory, and the shaping that never ends. Keywords: 1 John sermon, Hebrews 12 sermon, Matthew 18 sermon, biblical Greek, technia meaning, paideia meaning, Christian discipline, spiritual growth, childhood faith, parenting and faith, sermons of my father.

Excuses: Faith, Fear, and the Voice in the Fire

In this episode of Sermons of My Father, Landon Shaw revisits a 1986 sermon by his father, Lee Shaw, preached on the calling of Moses in Exodus. Rooted in Exodus, Matthew 25, and Proverbs 28, this message confronts the excuses we give God—and ourselves.Through raw personal reflection, Landon explores what it means to live with imposter syndrome, hide behind logic, and delay obedience in the name of perfection. Drawing parallels between Moses’s resistance, the parable of the talents, and modern self-protection, this episode challenges listeners to stop trimming the wick and start carrying oil. With references to the Reformation, Christian culture, and the emotional honesty of Oh, Sleeper’s “In the Wake of Pigs,” this episode peels back the layers of spiritual posturing and calls for something real—obedience born of surrender, not shame.Whether you're burned out, rebuilding, or searching for something true, this sermon meets you where you stall.Key topics include:Spiritual excuses and delayed obedienceThe call of Moses and personal insecurityMatthew 25 and the parable of the talentsImposter syndrome and borrowed faithEmotional honesty and religious cultureTheological reflection and psychological insightSermon storytelling and personal deconstructionBible passages covered:Exodus 3–4, Matthew 25:14–30, Matthew 5:3, Genesis 3:1, Proverbs 28:13Featuring:Sermon by Lee ShawReflections by Landon Shaw

Deception: The Church, the Mirror, and the Mask

In this episode of Sermons of My Father, Landon Shaw revisits a sermon preached by his father, Lee Shaw, on the letter of 1 John. This message confronts three types of deception found both in the early church and today: admitting sin without repentance, denying sin entirely, and claiming to have always believed without true transformation.Through personal narrative and biblical reflection, Landon explores what it means to stop hiding and start walking in the light. Drawing from passages in 1 John, John 3, Genesis 3, Proverbs 28, and 1 Corinthians 13, the episode confronts issues of false holiness, blame-shifting, religious ego, and the cost of spiritual honesty.Whether you are deconstructing your faith, wrestling with church culture, or searching for something real, this episode invites you to move beyond belief into responsibility, confession, and love.Key topics include:Spiritual deception in the church1 John and the call to walk in truthSelf-examination and confessionBiblical love and emotional integrityFaith, failure, and personal responsibilityChristian deconstruction and reconstructionSermon reflection and personal storytellingBible passages covered: 1 John 1:6–10, John 3:1–21, 1 Corinthians 13, Proverbs 28:13, Genesis 3, Romans 3:23, Luke 6:37, John 8Featuring:Sermon by Lee ShawReflections by Landon Shaw00:00 – Intro: What is Deception?07:15 – The Three Types of Self-Deceit (1 John)14:30 – Blame, Ego, and Genesis 320:00 – Love as a Mirror (1 Corinthians 13)26:40 – Nicodemus and the Illusion of Righteousness34:00 – Reflections and ConfessionSearch terms: deception, sin, confession, 1 John, Christian podcast, biblical truth, church hurt, spiritual growth, Lee Shaw, Sermons of My Father, walk in the light, truth and love, Christian deconstruction, transformation, repentance

Listening, Learning and Living in Unity

In this episode, I revisit a sermon my father preached in 1992 called Listening, Learning, and Living with Unity. At the time, he believed churches across Fort Worth could come together. Common Ground, The Vineyard, and Beautiful Feet were all part of that vision. Not to form a mega-church, but to become one body under one Spirit. He preached about unity. He said there would be no buildings and no budgets. Just the Chief Shepherd calling, and the sheep responding. But what he didn’t know was that everything was about to fall apart. This message came just months before that dream unraveled. I’m listening to it now with hindsight, with questions, and with a growing awareness of how differently my mother and father lived their faith. One stayed rooted in love. The other followed the call wherever it took him. This is where I start asking what it all meant. What repentance looks like. What obedience really costs. And whether we were ever ready for what we said we believed in.🔍 Topics in this episode:The cost of unity in the churchRepentance versus forgivenessDivision across denominationsMy parents’ different forms of faithWalking the long way when the short road looks easier📖 Scriptures Referenced:John 17, Exodus 13:17, James 1:22, 1 Thessalonians 5:19, Philippians 3:7–11, John 2, 8, 12, 14, Proverbs 29:18 (implied), Luke 4 (implied)🔖 Tags / SEO Keywords:#SermonsOfMyFather #ChurchUnity #FaithAndFamily #SpiritualReflection #Forgiveness #Repentance #TexasChurches #ChristianPodcast #Deconstruction #FatherSonStories #LeeShaw #LandonShaw #ChurchDivision #FamilyLegacy

Walking in Resurrection Power - Love

What does love look like when it’s tested at home, in private, and when no one is clapping? In this episode, Pastor Lee Shaw teaches from 1 Corinthians 13 and Colossians 3 on how resurrection power is revealed through the way we love—ourselves, our families, and even those who fail us.Through honest teaching and vivid personal stories—including a powerful moment with his young daughter Rebecca and a story about his mentor Leonard Ravenhill—Lee Shaw examines the heart of Christian maturity. This message invites us to evaluate whether our lives show the fruit of the Spirit or the symptoms of performance-driven religion. It challenges believers to die to selfish ambition and live from the heavenly identity they’ve already received.Host Landon Shaw reflects on his own struggle with self-worth, emotional strongholds, and how his family shaped his understanding of love. He invites listeners into that journey, not with answers—but with better questions. This episode will resonate with listeners seeking practical application of spiritual truth, emotional healing, and deeper relationships rooted in the love of Christ.🔔 Subscribe and follow for more teachings from the Sermons of My Father series—where legacy, Scripture, and family collide.Chapters00:00 – Introduction: The Test of Love02:14 – 1 Corinthians 13: The Measure of Maturity06:30 – When You Don’t Like Yourself10:45 – What Does Love Sound Like? Welcome to The Sermons of My Father

Before I was born, my father stomped across the South sharing the gospel, drenched in the blood of Christ and filled with a passion that shaped everyone around him. It all stopped when I was six, shifting the trajectory of our family in an instant. I was too young to remember his voice behind the pulpit, too young to hold onto more than the smell of the pews and the comfort of resting my head on my grandfather’s arm during church.Growing up, I believed we were different people. It took marriage, quiet moments, and the passing years to realize how much of him I carry in me. I’ve wrestled with faith—sometimes letting it fade, sometimes mocking it, but never letting go of the questions it planted in me. I’ve spent my life exploring religion, fascinated by the beauty, the courage, and the contradictions that have shaped history and shaped me.Now, I’m turning to my father’s old sermons—tapes from 1985 to 1992—to learn about him, about faith, and about myself. I want to understand the man whose advice I often ignored. I want to challenge what I believe, to see Christ’s teachings with fresh eyes, and to explore what it means to live with faith in a complicated world.Maybe even the smallest rattle of a cage can shift a lock. This is my journey into Sermons of My Father.

In Part 1 of this soul-searching series "The Edge and Back: A Pastors Bout with Burnout", Pastor Lee Shaw challenges us to move beyond moments of spiritual intensity and into a daily, abiding relationship with the Father. Hanging Out with God draws deeply from Acts 19, Ephesians 1, and other scriptures, Shaw explores the question every believer must answer: Who are you? Drawing deeply from Mark 14, John 19, Matthew 16, and more, Lee reminds believers that before any public display of faith, there must be a private cry of surrender. The Christian life isn’t about comparison, comfort, or cultural convenience—it’s about death to self, daily sacrifice, and total dependence on the Holy Spirit. This is not a message of easy Christianity. Drawing from Ecclesiastes 7:18–19, Genesis 2:17, and Philippians 2, he outlines the spiritual dangers of misplaced affections—how they lead to irresponsibility, distraction, and division.Lee calls Christians to embrace a life of servanthood, marked by self-subjection, self-denial, and self-sacrifice—the very traits of Christ. Using Scripture and personal stories, he challenges listeners to reflect Jesus by serving others humbly, joyfully, and without seeking recognition. ABOUT THIS SHOW

Enjoy!
