Finding Faith in the Midst of Despair – Parashat Va'era
Shabbat Shalom! The journey of redemption is not always a straight path. In Parashat Va'era, the people of Israel, once filled with hope after Moses’ arrival, are now consumed by despair. Pharaoh’s harsh decrees have crushed their spirit, making it hard to believe in the promises of deliverance.Yet, even in their darkest hour, God’s covenant remains firm. In Exodus 6:8, He reminds them of His unwavering plan: "I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hands to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord."This week’s portion also highlights the profound symbolism of redemption, likened in the Song of Songs (2:8) to a gazelle that appears and disappears from sight. Just as deliverance may seem near yet far away, faith requires us to trust even when the outcome is hidden.May the bravery of figures like Chacham Emanuel, who stood for truth and the unbreakable bond between the Jewish people and the Land of Israel, inspire us all. His story reminds us that holding fast to faith, even under immense pressure, can change history and bring us closer to the fulfillment of God’s promises.Thank you for joining me on this exploration of Shemot (Exodus).Shabbat Shalom!Click here to watch on YouTube.

Shemot opens a new chapter in the story of the Israelites, introducing us to the remarkable figure of Moses, destined to lead his people to freedom and deliver God’s law.Though his life begins in peril, hidden among the reeds of the Nile, it is Pharaoh’s daughter—known in the Talmud as Batya, the “daughter of God”—who defies her father’s decree to save him. Her act of compassion and courage sets the stage for Moses’ legacy of leadership and justice. What can we learn from Pharaoh’s daughter and her bold choices? How does her example shape Moses, and how can her story inspire us today?Thank you for joining me as we begin this powerful journey through Shemot (Exodus).Shabbat Shalom! And He Lived
Welcome to the last portion of the book of Genesis! On the surface Portion VaYechi may seem less exciting than the ones from the previous weeks. But as one dives deeper there are whispers of prophecy and hints of mysticism to be found. As Jacob senses his life is ending, he makes his son Joseph swear to bury him in the Land of Israel. Tradition holds that he then explained to Joseph exactly why his mother Rachel had to be buried near Bethlehem and not in the family burial cave of Machpelah. It is said that Jacob understood the role that Rachel’s burial place had yet to play in the story of the Children of Israel. Even now the Jeremiah 3:15-17 verses inspire weary Israelis as they pray and hope for the return of their hostages. “They will return from the land of the enemy. So there is hope for your descendants,” declares the LORD. “Your children will return to their own land.” Thank you for joining me on this journey through Bereisheet (Genesis)! Next week we will begin the book of Shemot (Exodus). Shabbat Shalom! Click here to watch on YouTube.

He (Judah) Approached
Vayigash is a dramatic portion. As Judah pled for Benjamin’s freedom, Joseph realized that his brothers had changed and that they cared deeply for one another. Joseph could then feel confident about revealing himself to them. Hanukkah has drawn to a close, but the eighth day of Hanukkah holds the special distinction of being above nature. Judah fought his nature to advocate for his wronged brother Benjamin. Joseph fought his nature to resist Potiphar’s wife. And every day brave men and women in Israel rise about their nature to protect the nation. May we all merit to be resilient and rise above our own nature.Shabbat shalom!Would you like to receive news updates from Israel? Join our Telegram channel! The End
In Portion Miketz, Joseph pushes his brothers. He asks personal questions and puts them through a series of tests, but for what reason? This familial strife is also found in the Hanukkah story. The Maccabees fought not only the Greeks but their fellow Jews who had chosen a life of pagan Hellenism. The Maccabee family emerged at the end of the war strong and united. So too, Joseph’s brothers came together to defend their youngest brother, Benjamen, showing how they’d truly changed their ways. As Joseph, his brothers, and the Maccabees learned, the nation of Israel lives because they have the same father. Am Israel Chai, Od Avinu Chai. And He (Jacob) Settled
Hanukkah begins in a few days! Is there a connection between portion Vayeshev and Hannukah? This portion recounts how Joseph was betrayed by his brothers. Joseph’s brothers threw him into a dry pit that was filled with snakes and scorpions! He was then sold and transported to Egypt by merchants trading spices. The spices that were carried down to Egypt with Joseph present a portrait of our lives and of Hanukkah. Though it was rough going for Joseph and his life seemed wrecked, the scent of the spices reminded him that God had not forgotten him. So too the Maccabees were reminded of God’s faithfulness by the miracles of oil and the light of the menorah. Sometimes in great trials, the smallest miracles are the greatest testament to God's faithfulness. Shabbat Shalom and Happy Hannukah! Click here to watch on YouTube.

And He (Jacob) Sent
Jacob’s life journey represents the journey of the Nation of Israel. In this portion Jacob is given a new name: Israel, meaning “to strive with God”. The fate of the people of Israel is hinted at in this name; a nation that will have to fight for its existence. From fights with angels, nations and occasionally relatives, Israel must strive to overcome. With God's help, the nation of Israel will obtain a total victory over their foes.
