Elderhood & Community Success - Part One
Enjoy all that we learn in this honored Elder's presence! Iya Tahirah Abu Bakr is an 84-year-old renowned Elder, an initiated Priestess in the Yoruba tradition, and the founder of the St. Croix Council of Elders. Iya Tahirah is also a healer, teacher, storyteller, diviner, shamanic practitioner, grandmother, and great-grandmother. In our conversation, she shared the wisdom and demonstrated that the practice of elderhood is not about age or position; it is about community, commitment and self-awareness. Iya's love for humanity manifests through the importance she places on relationships with ourselves, the natural world, the food we eat, and especially our connections to each other. She holds space for our healing as individuals and our local and global communities. In the amazing novel, Firekeeper's Daughter, author Angeline Boulley wrote, "I'm reminded that our Elders are our greatest resource, embodying our culture and community. Their stories connect us to our language, medicines, land, clans, songs, and traditions. They are a bridge between the Before and the Now, guiding those of us who will carry on in the Future." Iya's connections to the physical and spiritual worlds, her leadership and guidance in communal healing is connected to her ongoing evolution as an elder and citizen of the planet. Working Success - Part One: Self-Awareness
Welcome back, lovely people. I'm so excited to have you listen to our first Sister Chat interview, Working Success, with Reverend Dr. Nicole Charles, CEO of Edgar Cayce's Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.)! Nickie, as I call her, is my friend of many years. I met her as a slam poet, "spitting her gift," in a gathering of women and totally blowing our minds. I felt compelled to speak with this force of nature, and we became fast friends. Nicole is a multi-talented, brilliantly intelligent, highly spiritual sister, with an interesting "herstory." Our three-part discussion starts with this episode, focused on self-awareness and a personal journey to defining success on her own terms. True leaders are dynamic--always learning as much, if not more, than they teach and guiding by example. Rev. Dr. Charles shines the spotlight on:how becoming a great leader is tied to transformative changegrowth and the roadblocks that make it possibleallowing success and embracing deservability Dr. Charles' success story is full of valuable lessons. She shares some intriguing nuggets on how she got to this "enlightened" space. You are in for a treat, with three episodes for our discussion with Dr. Charles. Check out part two, where we dive deeply into her evolution and spiritual leadership.
