SPARK Insights With Coach Reg
by Coach Reg
I'm Bob Regnerus. Coach Reg. I've coached basketball for 38 seasons, I coach high school golf now, and I've spent the last 30 years in marketing and business alongside all of it. But the work I do now is the work I was always heading toward.SPARK Insights started as a weekly newsletter. It became something more. Every week I sit down and write about what I'm seeing in coaching sessions, in conversations, in the patterns that keep showing up across every person I work with. Athletes in transition. Founders who built the thing and lost themselves inside it. Executives who are successful by every measure and quietly miserable. And people who are still in the middle of it - still building, still competing, still leading - who sense that the way they're carrying it isn't sustainable. The common thread is identity. It's always identity.I help people see what's actually driving them, because most people are running on programming they never chose. And the moment they see it, everything shi

The Story Underneath the Story
I'm a coach. I read what's underneath the surface for a living. On Sunday, the story was right in front of me on a tee box, and I missed it completely.A while back, in a Zoom breakout with a stranger, I asked one question. When the breakout ended, he repeated it to a room of sixty people. As this episode goes out, I'm on a flight to New York for dinner at his home.In this episode: a tee box, a Zoom breakout, and two questions I want you to sit with until next week.If it lands, CoachReg.net (click the conversation button). The Thing You Keep Dismissing Because It Seems Too Simple
There's an idea I've been sitting on for a long time, and I kept dismissing it, because you're really not supposed to be able to do this. You're not supposed to say you can build a business around something that feels completely playful, something you thoroughly enjoy, something that, if somebody else had the guts to build it first, you'd say yes to before they finished the pitch. But as an entrepreneur, you already know the tell. The thing you most want to build is often the exact thing the world is waiting for you to build. This week I stopped dismissing it.In this episode: what I'm finally putting together, the reason most people kill ideas like this in their own heads before they ever take a step, and one question I want you to sit with until next week.If it lands, CoachReg.net (click the conversation button). The Thing You Can't Say From Stage
In May of 2023, a month after my mom passed, I stood on a friend's stage and said something out loud that you're not supposed to say. I want to spend as much time as I possibly can on a golf course, and as much time as I can with my wife.I had no idea what I was setting in motion.A year later I retired from 38 seasons of basketball coaching. A year after that, I was handed the golf program at my alma mater. From August through October 3rd, there wasn't a day I wasn't on a course. Life just kind of filled in the details. This is Season 2, Episode 1 of the newsletter and podcast formerly known as SPARK Insights. New name, new format. Things You Can't Say. Each week I'll say something you're not supposed to say, and I'll leave you with a question. This week's question: What are you not allowing yourself to choose? If you sit with it and you're ready to answer it, book a Diagnostic Session with me at CoachReg.net.LinksBook a diagnostic: CoachReg.net (click the conversation button)Newsletter: coachreg.beehiiv.com

The Night SPARK Died
About 10 days ago, lightning struck close enough to my house to do real damage. Fried a printer, killed a sofa, knocked out two DirecTV receivers, and took out the internet. It happened while I was in the middle of removing SPARK from everything I do.In this episode I talk about what I found when I went back through a hundred coaching sessions, the four questions that showed up in almost every one of them, and what happened when I stopped hiding behind frameworks, acronyms, and credentials I'd been stacking for years. This is the companion episode to the final issue of SPARK Insights. Next week everything becomes The Thing You Can't Say.New site: https://CoachReg.net Subscribe to The Thing You Can't Say newsletter: https://sparkinsights.beehiiv.com/subscribe

Tiger Woods and the Question Nobody's Asking
This week's episode isn't about golf. Michael Bamberger wrote something on Golf.com after Tiger's latest car accident that stopped Coach Reg in his tracks: "It's not easy...to have to find meaning in your life when that chapter of your life is over." Bob walks through why that statement fuels his work, runs a thought experiment applying the Purpose Factor® framework to Tiger's public career, and connects it to the pattern he sees in athletes, founders, and executives who've never done identity work beneath their performance.Links:Read this week's newsletter: https://sparkinsights.beehiiv.com/p/tiger-woods-and-the-question-nobody-s-asking?draft=true Michael Bamberger's article: https://golf.com/news/tiger-woods-car-accident-same-conclusion/Purpose Factor® Assessment: https://bobregnerus.com/purposeBook a conversation with Coach Reg: https://calendly.com/bobreg/conversation-with-coach-reg

The Switch-a-Roo
I asked someone a question on a call this week and it boomeranged right back at me. A guy from overseas was pitching me on his AI marketing tools, and I did what I've been doing more and more lately - I flipped the conversation. I asked him what part of himself he gets to express through building those tools. He didn't have an answer. Most people don't.Then my inner voice decided to have some fun with me and asked me the same question. That sent me all the way back to a basketball bench when I was sixteen years old, through twenty-four years of running marketing agencies, and into the coaching work I do now. Different rooms, different scoreboards, same Bob underneath all of it.This episode is about containers - the roles we play, the businesses we build, the teams we lead - and the thing you're actually expressing inside of them. I share what I've seen happen when someone figures that out, and I tell you the part I don't usually say out loud: I need the same mirror held up for me that I hold for everyone else.If something in this episode sits with you, don't let it pass. Magic Showed Up on My Lunch Break
I was out walking, listening back to yesterday's episode on MAGIC, and an Amazon driver was barefoot in the grass dancing with ribbons on their lunch break. So I stopped and said "Hi". Goes by the handle beloveflows: What does this human do? They are a fire performer, and within about a minute we were deep into identity, performance, and what drives us. The Magical Scorecard
I was sitting on a beach in Mexico after leading a fire ceremony when I realized something. Magic was showing up in my life constantly and I was ignoring most of it. A nickel that rolled to my feet on my 55th birthday. A Billy Joel concert that appeared out of nowhere the same morning. Both delivered without me chasing, forcing, or hustling anything. In this episode I tell the full double nickel and Billy Joel stories, share how a late night conversation on a beach led me to build a new kind of scoreboard, and introduce the Magical Scorecard - a simple tool built around five categories that spell MAGIC. I also talk about what happened when I started using it (8 things the first week, 20 the next, 25+ by the third) and why this matters for the high performers, athletes, and coaches I work with.Download the Magical Scorecard PDF: https://bobregnerus.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Coach-Reg-Magical-Scorecard.pdfSubscribe to SPARK Insights™ (weekly newsletter): sparkinsights.beehiiv.comConnect with Coach Reg: bobregnerus.com

The Content Was Mine. The Voice Wasn't. And Once I Saw the Patterns I Couldn't Unsee Them.
This is the first audio episode of SPARK Insights and it exists because three friends showed me something I couldn't ignore.I've been using AI to help write my newsletter for over seventy issues. I speak everything first, run it through Claude, and edit the draft. The ideas have always been mine. But a conversation with Caitlin, Amy Birks, and Brandon Fong from a community called Curiosity Island made me look at something I'd been avoiding: the voice on the page didn't sound like me.In this episode I walk through what happened when I saw the patterns AI leaves behind in writing, the three filters I built to fix it, and why my writing started landing different with people before I even told anyone what I changed.I'm also sharing the AI Writing Filter I built so you can do the same thing with your own content. And I close with an original song called "Worth Knowing."To read and subscribe to SPARK Insights, visit https://sparkinsights.netKey Moments:[00:00] Why you're hearing my voice for the first time [02:00] How I've used AI to write 70+ issues of SPARK Insights [05:00] The process: I speak it, transcribe it, shape it, edit it [06:30] The question that changed everything: does the content still land? [08:30] The decision I had to make once I saw the patterns [09:30] The three filters I built: AI Tells, Voice, and Sovereignty [11:15] What shifted when people started telling me the writing was landing different [13:00] What Caitlin, Amy, and Brandon mirrored back to me [14:13] "Worth Knowing" - an original song
