Smaller Cities in a Shrinking World: Learning to Thrive without Growth by Alan Mallach

Smaller Cities in a Shrinking World: Learning to Thrive without Growth by Alan Mallach.  Published by Island Press in 2022. More is never enough. Have we reached the balance of a sustainable human population that affords us a comfortable and ecologically sustainable life style in harmony with the Earth? What does that economy and city look like? How does it function?  These and many other practical questions - and answers -  is the thesis of this book. Join me in conversation with Alan to understand the data about the human population and how this affects all of us from small towns to big cities. How did COVID affect our towns and the opportunities and challenges that accompany it. Maybe a smaller human population isn't such a bad thing but we have to plan for it. The old saying is - "we never plan to fail but we fail to plan" applies here. And, Alan helps us to understand and start the conversation with our local governments to being this process. Nothing - rarely - happens over night. You'll find in this book Alan has half cuppa coffee full outlook for humanity.  If you want to have a community to enjoy in the future that is affordable and a joy to live in, take this book to your next county commission meeting. Build Beyond Zero: New Ideas for Carbon-Smart Architecture by Bruce King and Chris Magwood

Build Beyond Zero: New Ideas for Carbon-Smart Architecture by Bruce King and Chris Magwood. Published by Island Press in 2022The amazing thing is that we have the technology and the planning to capture carbon to bring our beautiful home - The Earth - back into balance. The biggest emitter of carbon is actually our homes. It's the built environment that is causing so much havoc in our atmosphere. Life here is possible because of the warm cozy blanket that envelopes the Earth but we do not an extra wool blanket of carbon. Too much carbon, and we are so hot that it's changing the climate; therefore, changing how our food is grown, the extreme weather, droughts, and floods. - so that's the bad news - The good news is this book. We already have the technology and still developing newer technology to sink the carbon back into our built environment where it should be - stored. Just as decades ago, there was no GPM on a car sticker before purchase. There are no stickers for carbon usage (in creating or emitting) for our houses. The cars changed. Our houses can too. In this conversation with Bruce and Chris, you'll learn more about how to be a better consumer. What to ask for and what to look for. You'll learn more about how a simple house and a complex urban system is built. At the next county meeting, you'll be able to ask better questions of developers. At the end of the day, Bruce said it best. Climate change will reverse because of women. When we learn to respect each other as a species. That in turn will lead to better environmental policies for our common mother - The Earth. Please share this podcast with all of your architecture friends and students. The Progress Illusion: Reclaiming Our Future from the Fairytale of Economics by Jon Erickson

The Progress Illusion: Reclaiming Our Future from the Fairytale of Economics by Jon Erickson. Published by Island Press in 2022Who invented the economics theories we hold in high regard today? Who do they serve best? Are they really giving us the full economic picture for today's society? In this conversation, we learn about the who, what, when, where, and why we have for the current economic models for our global society. Where is it taking us for the future? Freak-economics have lead us to only value the price tag on - everything. We have over used the phrase "time is money". To the point, that our society only considers something of value if there is a price tag on it. In economics, we are taught that we need to have all of the costs and values for the next marginal unit to understand how the homogeneous glob makes decisions? Is that all I am? Is there a price tag that gives the true worth of my body organs and fresh air with some clean water? The ecological economics decided to put a value tag on trees, air, grass, and eco-system services. Did they succeed? Did this cause us to value development more than environment? What do we value and why?  So how can we develop a new economic model that clearly understands and predicts our economic decisions. We not exactly as logical as we think - we are. It's complicated. That's exactly what Jon covers in this conversation. The Progress Illusion: Reclaiming Our Future from the Fairytale of Economics by Jon Erickson. Darlene Crone-Todd PhD BF Skinner Foundation Board

Happy Holiday week 2022Today's guest is Darlene Crone-Todd from the BF Skinner Foundation. As my audience may know, my first career was a dolphin trainer at the Gulfarium in Ft.  Walton Beach Fl. I have been used the BF Skinner teaching methods for not just dolphins but in teaching swimming, teaching my employees, and managing my various businesses. I am thrilled to introduce this amazing group of people who are carrying the light of the positive reinforcement torch on today.  My very special guest today is Darlene Crone-Todd from the BF Skinner Foundation from Harvard. She is a full time professor in Psychology at the Salem University from Salem, MA.  What would you like to learn? How were you taught in school? Do you remember the material well? There are different teaching techniques. And, to a varying degree they can be effective. However, study after study from BF Skinner demonstrated how the principals of learning (positive, variable schedules, shaping, extinguishing,) have stood the test of time across human demographics and species. What are these techniques? As a student, what type of teaching technique would you prefer? Do you want a positive environment with quick progress? What would that look like? This type of teaching shapes the learning into small steps for the quickest progress. It's by breaking down the learning (either physical i.e. ice skating or mental i.e research papers) that the students can enjoy the process as well as the instructor. They both get positive reinforcement from the interaction and exchange of knowledge?   Studies are demonstrating that employees are not always happy in the workplace. How can we have a better work environment? What is "positive" anyway? Does it work for anyone. If you are a manager, how can you be more effective? To answer these questions, and many more tune into this essential Sunday Coffee podcast for a Happy 2023! Place & Prosperity: How cities help us to connect and innovate: by William Fulton

Place & Prosperity: How cities help us to connect and innovate: by William Fulton Published by Island Press 2022Where are you from? Where do you live? These are the two most common and powerful questions we ask and answer to each other. It's deeply personal to our sense of identity and place in a community. What is this "place" we call home? How do places come into being? Why do we long to go back "home" ? Or, do we want to explore and find a new community? Mr. Fulton has these questions too and he has learned a few lessons along the way -coming from a small town and then traveling the world. This book is his own life long lessons and answers searching for "the place". How they are shaped and how we can change them. Why community would you like to live in? A daily walkable city to you job and supermarket or would you still prefer connect via car? In national surveys again and again it was a 50/ 50 split. In our conversation we discuss what it means to create places like these and why they come into reality. I hope you'll enjoy this conversation with your hot cuppa this morning. Exercises in Architecture: Learning to Think Like As Architect by Simon Unwin

Exercises in Architecture: learning to think like as architect   2nd Edition by Simon Unwin published by Routledge in 2023 Each art form has it's own language. While we may not equate architecture with written music, it is - just like it. As the author discusses from his own struggles with learning architecture, he discovered architecture anew while teaching it. How do we communicate? Does architecture communicate with us? The answer is yes if we are aware of it. It forms the basis for our daily lives in many humble and not so humble ways.Architecture informs our behaviors. It communicates ideas. Just like any other art form the language is distinct and all it's own.In this book (and his series of books) Simon explores how we come to learn communication. How we have lost the art of spaces and voids in our daily lives. It is an instinct that we can become aware of once more. There are principals to making better spaces for not just our homes but our spiritual places and work places. This book applies to more than architecture. It's about the bigger picture of urban design and landscape architecture too. This is a book of exercise for both studio architecture teachers and students who want to do more.Exercises in Architecture: learning to think like as architect   2nd Edition by Simon Unwin published by Routledge in 2023 Support the showThank you for joining us on Sunday mornings with your hot cuppa tea or coffee. No Farms, No Food by Don Stuart

No Farms, No Food Uniting Farmers and Environmentalists to Transform American Agriculture by Don StuartWhat happens when a farm fails? Sold? Retires? These are not easy answers but they can have devastating results for the communities and environment they serve. Mr. Stuart takes a good, hard, long look into the research and reality of the decisions we make about our food. We discuss the history of farms in the US. The  "why and how"  they landed there. And, the financial realities to make food. Real Estate - It's a balancing act. When a property is deemed more valuable with retail and housing the property value goes up. Farmers have to leverage their land in order to grow us food. It needs to be affordable for everyone. How do we balance the real estate pressures with our food?Climate -Farmers do care about the environment. Rain is very important to a farmer as well as the soils. They like to eat good food too. How do we strike a balance to have our cake and eat it too? There are many questions and this book offers some answers and a new perspective. Can we  use coalitions to protect our resources? How can we wisely leverage them for our survival and to cherish the the home planet that we all love: Earth. Don Stuart is a former director for AFT's Pacific Regional Office and has also served as executive director for the Washington Association of Conservation Districts and executive director for Salmon for Washington, a non-profit trade association. Latour for Architects by Albena Yaneva

Latour for Architects by Albena Yaneva published by Routledge in 2022This book is an introduction to Bruno Latour. He is a leading figure in Social Sciences today. In the past decade his Action-Network Theory (ANT) has gained much popularity in the field of architecture. This book discusses his philosophy and how it applies to specific methods of new thinking in architecture and design pedagogy. It demonstrates these methods in practical examples of architectural practice and urban design. This book argues for the ANT-inspired approach to architecture and how the methodological insights can outline new research avenues in the field. The book draws on the world of architectural practice and how it can re-order the world to handle human and nonhuman collective life. It re-examines the role of matter in design and redefines the forms of social, political, and ethical associations that bind us together in cities. This interview discusses the role of landscape architecture too. Swamplands by Edward Struzik

Swamplands by Edward Struzik published by Island Press in 2021Peat is partially decomposed plant material that builds up over centuries in swampy, waterlogged conditions. Representing just three percent of the earth's landscape, peatland can store four times more carbon than th eAmazon rainforest and twice as much as all of the world's forests. In this book Edward, discusses the major peat bogs in the world in places that may surprise you. Bogs and swamplands were prominent in North America before the early European settlers decided to drain them out of fear and economies.  Steeped in mythology and misunderstanding, we have unwittingly built in areas that may always flood. With better understanding of these landscapes, Edward hopes we can learn to live with nature and respect these important ecosystems. Bet the Farm by Beth Hoffman

Bet the Farm: The Dollars and Sense of Growing Food in America by Beth Hoffman published by Island Press 2021This book is a compelling, deeply personal narrative that delivers a unique view into the realities of the American Farm. Beth covered agriculture and farming as a journalist; however, the reality of being a new farmer with her husband was an eye opener. The first challenge was to negotiate with her father-in-law, who is reluctant to hand over control of the land. They have to find somewhere to slaughter the grass-finished beef and weather the losses of a failed oat crop. Through her personal struggles, she reveals the larger story of American agriculture and explores how a more economically and environmentally sustainable system may become possible. Schools That Heal: Design with Mental Health in Mind by Claire Latane

Schools That Heal: Design with Mental Health in Mind by Claire Latane Published by Island Press in 2021In Schools That Heal: Design with Mental Health in Mind,  landscape architecture professor Claire Latane argues that for schools to be supportive learning environments, they must be designed with students mental and physical health in mind. Backed by decades of research, Latane shows how schools that nurture a sense of belonging, providing nature-full spaces, and inspire awe improve students' academic performance and reduce stress, anxiety, disorderly conduct, and crime. Latane highlights ten inspiring examples of schools around the world designed with mental health in mind. In Japan, a community decimated by a tsunami incorporated a wetland into the school landscape to reconnect students with nature. At Sandy Hook Elementary, an inclusive design process helped create a new school that would be a place of healing and learning.  The book also addresses how schools can support students and teachers post-COVID with building elements like large windows for natural ventilation and outdoor learning spaces.
