Tales From the 118

Fans (and journalists) Lizzie and Lyra re-watch 9-1-1 and also break down the storylines, the ships and the fun of the ABC drama.

Tales From the 118 Episode 48: Season 9, Episode 17 - Our "I Got Your Babe" Review

Lizzie and Lyra aren't bothered that 9-1-1 9x17 is making a Buck a dad. It's how the show got there that's bothersome. Because it proves that 9-1-1 has zero concept of pacing. They just slap things together. You could see it with Theo but also with how soft they were with this ICE storyline.  So is 9-1-1 about realism? Or are we just filling a time slot on ABC? And what's the overall plot of this season?  Join Lizzie and Lyra as they break down "I Got You Babe! Contact us at: [email protected]

Tales From the 118 Episode 47: Season 9, Episode 16 - Our "Where There's Smoke" Review

Lizzie and Lyra had a lot of fun with 9-1-1 "Where There's Smoke" despite some of the heavy circumstances around it. Firstly, they loved how everyone came together like the Scooby Gang to proved Chimney's innocence. That's their Captain. And while he's playing Princess, they're doing everything to clear his name. Also, Brat Buck. You knew Sam's name. But appreciate the going awake cake. Which, Eddie and the baked goods and then Eddie's kitchen. Just so many moments that reminded these two why they watch 9-1-1! But these two can't ignore the heavy weight of this episode and how they... don't know where this show is going in Season 9... Tales From the 118 Episode 46: Season 9, Episode 15 - Our "Pick Your Poison" Review

Lizzie and Lyra agree that 9-1-1 9x15 "Pick Your Poison" is one of the best episodes this show has ever done. Oliver Stark's acting was top notch as his character Buck struggled with his addiction and the withdrawal that came after. And when he needed help, everyone chipped in, closing ranks and proving that found family is this show's strength. On non-Buck related notes, we enjoyed Athena's investigation, even if it was a little cheesy. And on May and Ravi, both agree that for Mayravi to work we need to know more about Ravi. Maybe it can be solved by making Ravi a season regular! Join Lizzie and Lyra as they break down "Pick Your Poison"! Contact us at: [email protected]

    Tales From the 118 Episode 45: Season 9, Episode 14 - Our "D.I.Y." Review

Lizzie and Lyra are concerned after the events of 9-1-1 9x14 "D.I.Y." They're concerned about the amount of time that random couple got. They're also concerned about how this show keeps putting Buck and Eddie in situations that scream "this is going to lead somewhere romantic." And they're concerned about whether this show can handle a possible addiction storyline with Buck. Either way, things get heavy here as Buck and Eddie try to find their way after the kidnapping and May tries to find her way in life. Join Lizzie and Lyra as they break down "D.I.Y." but also what they expect from the final episodes of Season 9! Contact us at: [email protected]

Tales From the 118 Episode 44: Season 9, Episode 13: Our "Mother's Boy" Review

Lizzie and Lyra talk the Buddie fest that was "Mother's Boy," and yes, this is mostly aboutBuck and Eddie. Don't look at us, this is 9-1-1's fault! From the funny montage at the beginning, to the fact that they were happy to spend 30 hours together in a car, without forgetting that their first reaction when both of them woke up was to look for the other, this was giving procedural romance setup. Join Lizzie and Lyra as they break down where they've seen this trope before and what it could mean for the future of Buddie and 9-1-1. Contact us at: [email protected]

  6. 44

Tales From the 118 Episode 43: Season 9, Episode 12: Our "Dads and Cads" Review

Lizzie and Lyra talk "Dads and Cads" and how the Buckley parents do not deserve the grace Buck extended them. This is not a redemption arc, just acceptance of how bad they are as parents. And, of course, they also talk about the Buddie of it all, both on 9-1-1 and as Eddie and Buck head to Nashville for a crossover with 9-1-1: Nashville. And hey, that was fun... but very light. We don't need to make a habit of it.  We'd rather have some development. Tales From the 118 Episode 42: Season 9, Episode 11: Our "Going Once, Going Twice" Review

The hiatus is over and Lizzie and Lyra are back to talk about 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 11! And a lot of things happened... but did anything really happen? Because week after week, it feels like this show reminds of how little these characters have changed while also giving us monolgues like Hen's about how much they've changed.  Lizzie and Lyra will admit that it felt right to see Eddie actually call Buck after Chris' "kidnapping," May and Ravi clicking, and even the whole Buckley sibling monent. But they still feel lost as to what direction this show is truly going in... Tales From the 118 Episode 41: Season 9, Episode 10 - Our "Handle With Care" Review

Lizzie and Lyra are back to talk about the wild ride that was 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 10! And it was an odd one for sure. Because while the show had plenty of opportunities to be first responders to Abigail, the show decided to make her as unhinged as her parents. And they completly missed an opportunity to deconstruct some of Eddie's religious trauma. Instead, we have another kidnapping. They do admit though that everything with Harry worked in "Handle with Care." He has found his purpose being a firefighter. And despite Chimney's real fears about the responsibility of a probie but also family, Harry kept fighting. That's admirable. But Lizzie and Lyra are confused about that knife. Tales From the 118 Episode 40: Season 9, Episode 9 - Our "Fighting Back" Review

Lizzie and Lyra once again discuss the fallout of Hen's secrets, and how she's dealing with her illness. And though they don't love the writing, they deeply relate to Hen's position and how hard what she's going through is. It's good that, by the end of the episode, she let her family be there for her. Then there's Harry, who goes through his own journey this episode. And it's one they really enjoyed. They just wish Bobby was around to see it. So all in all, some good. Some bad. And not much idea of where the season is going. Join them for the latest Tales From the 118! Tales From the 118 Episode 39: Season 9, Episode 8 - Our "War" Review

Lizzie and Lyra have mixed feels about 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 8 "War." Because over and over again Hen was acting OOC and it wasn't she who deserved an apology. It was Chimney. He kept rightfully defending himself, and Lizzie and Lyra agree that Hen fainting derailed whatever story 9-1-1 was trying to tell.  And then there was Eddie and Buck AND Buddie. They were glad that the show remembered Eddie's veteran background. A little bit of continuity for you. (Let's keep that up.) For Buddie, it was fun seeing them doing a 2 for 1 job. But once again, we live in a post-Heated Rivalry world. We want more than crumbs. So, some good. But not all. And not most of it. Join them for the latest Tales From the 118! Tales From the 118 Episode 38: Season 9, Episode 7 - Our "Secrets" Review

Lizzie and Lyra return to 9-1-1, after being blessed by Heated Rivalry, in their review for "Secrets." The biggest secret of them all is Hen's, who decides to not go to a doctor after her fainting spell and shaking hands. But it gets worse. It's been 3 months since she found out. And when Chimney found out, Lizzie and Lyra agree. Chimney was in the right to fire her! Then there's Eddie, Buck, and Ravi. A lot of their scenes were funny. But how did a storyline about Eddie... transform into a story about Buck where the show makes fun of his "bisexual escapades"? Decisions have been made. But do we understand them? No.  Join them for the latest Tales From the 118! Contact us at: [email protected] Find us on social media at: talesfromthe118.bsky.social, talesfromthe118 & Tales From the 118

Tales From the 118 Episode 37: Season 9, Episode 6 - Our "Family History" Review

Lizzie and Lyra talk 9-1-1's "Family History," and how even if it was mostly effective as an episode, it wasn't really a great midseason finale. Probably because it wasn't meant to be one! They also have some issues with Chimney's Captain arc happening mostly off-screen, and Hen's choice to hide his illness from her family for... what reason, again? The show's pacing is a problem, and its tendency to expect us to fill in the blanks is also an issue.  Plus, there are still so many dangling plot threads from last season! Tales From the 118 Episode 36: Season 9, Episode 5 - Our "Día de los Muertos" Review

Lizzie and Lyra talk 9-1-1 "Día de los Muertos." And as Latinas, they felt this one. Eddie in particular got a lot of moments in this episode with religious guilt, grief, and choosing your own path. And even though they didn't like that it was Abuela bones this episode, they saw what this death did to Eddie and what could possibly come next.  They also talk about Buck and how his journey paralleled Eddie's, with Buck working through his grief based on belief. And while that argument they had might've pissed off fans, they deserve a little grace and understanding because again, it's grief.  And on Athena front... she finally talked to Bobby, the grief that's been hanging over all of them.  Join them for the latest Tales From the 118! Tales From the 118 Episode 35: Season 9, Episode 4 - Our "Reentry" Review

Lizzie and Lyra talk 9-1-1 "Reentry" and how it was the best episode of the opening emergency. Did it have to take 4 episodes to get here? No. It really didn't. If short films can deliver a moving story in 10 minutes, 9-1-1 should be able to tighten things up. Either way, they talk about how Angela Bassett gave a heartbreaking performance. But so did Pepi Sonuga, who plays young Athena. They also clock Eddie and Chimney for the tension brewing there and talk about how 9-1-1: Nashville could learn a thing or two from 9-1-1 if they want to succeed as a show. Tales From the 118 Episode 34: Season 9, Episode 3 - Our "The Sky is Falling" Review

Lizzie and Lyra talk 'The Sky is Falling' and how it balanced character moments better than the previous episode, while still dropping little hints about what every individual storyline will be going forward. From Chim needing to take action, to Eddie being a little reckless, to Buck having to relieve a lot of his traumas, the train emergency had it all! And, that's without even going into Hen and Athena killing it in space, and Karen solving problem after problem to get them home. Join them for the latest Tales From the 118! Tales From the 118 Episode 33: Season 9, Episode 2 - Our "Spiraling" Review

Lizzie and Lyra are taking things to space in 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 2 "Spiraling." And honestly... they focused a little too much on the emergency for us. So much so that what character development actually happened? Also, why weren't more people from the 118 concerned about Hen and Athena? Well, besides Karen, she was perfect. And Harry, who was not perfect, but we still related. But grief, falling objects, and space? Also, here be Fast and Furious comparisons, because space.  Join them for the latest Tales From the 118! Tales From the 118 Episode 32: Season 9, Episode 1 - Our "Eat the Rich" Review

Lizzie and Lyra welcome Season 9 of 9-1-1 in their review of "Eat the Rich" where the rich literally get eaten by a whale, Hen and Athena going to space makes sense, and the dynamics have shifted for everyone. For one, Buck is a little too invested in Hen and Eddie seemingly becoming besties now that they're paired up. Thank God for Ravi being the voice of reason. And Chimney, he's adjusting to being the boss while trying to live up to Bobby's name. But he doesn't have to worry. He's doing a good job. Then there's Athena. The grief is being held at bay. And when it hits her, it's going to be bad. Until then, SPACE IT IS! Join them for the latest Tales From the 118! Tales From the 118 Episode 31: Our Season 9 Preview

Lizzie and Lyra are putting their 9-1-1 Season 2 rewatch on pause for a Season 9 preview! And between Bobby still dead and Athena and Hen going to space, there's plenty to talk about. In particular they talk about wanting the show to remember Eddie Diaz as a character and that the fans didn't invent Buddie out of nowhere. 9-1-1 has been dropping those hints for years. It's time to cash out. Also team dynamics are about to change with Chimney being Captain. Can he pull it off? Join them for the latest Tales From the 118! Tales From the 118 Episode 30: Season 2, Episode 5 - Our "Awful People" Rewatch

Lizzie and Lyra continue on with Season 2 of ABC's 9-1-1 with "Awful People," which proves that all these first responders are the best of us. (Well, most of them.) They encounter the worst of the worst sometimes and they still do their job. Also this episode sees Eva return to stir the pot and make Hen and Karen's life more difficult. Why? For reasons. Lizzie and Lyra continue on with Season 2 of ABC's 9-1-1 with "Stuck," which feels like the first Eddie episode and a truly important episode for Chimney's growth, as well. They go over Athena's choice, Christopher and Eddie, Chimney and Bobby, Maddie's decision to move out, and even take a moment (or five) to discuss why heteronormative glasses have kept so many people from seeing what the show has set up from the beginning with Buddie. Lizzie and Lyra continue on with Season 2 of ABC's 9-1-1 with a double episode rewatch of "7.1" and "Help Is Not Coming." The Earthquake emergency goes on to prove that Eddie Diaz and Maddie Buckley were the missing pieces this show needed. Both of them provide something different for Buck without JUST being there for Buck. They're their own characters. As for the rest of the 118, Hen continues to prove how strong she is and Bobby and Athena reach a new milestone in their relationship. Join them for the latest Tales From the 118! Tales From the 118 Episode 27: Season 2, Episode 1 - Our "Under Pressure" Rewatch

Lizzie and Lyra start Season 2 of ABC's 9-1-1! Of course they talk about the introduction of Eddie Diaz. It's the beginning of a new era for this show (and for Buck.) There's also our favorite Maddie Buckley making her debut! Which... also signals big changes for Buck. But besides that, this is when 9-1-1 really starts hitting its stride and where the missing pieces click into place, creating the show many love. And they break it all down in their rewatch! Lizzie and Lyra reach the end of 9-1-1 Season 1 with Episode 10 "A Whole New You." The end means we finally get to say goodbye to Abby. And in that goodbye, she proves to not trust Buck or their relationship, leaving him dangling while she's in Ireland. On the Bobby front, he's made his choice and moving forward, cementing a new start to his life. Even Karen and Hen are giving it another go. Why? Who knows besides a leap of faith. Tales From the 118 Episode 25: Season 1, Episode 9 - Our "Trapped" Rewatch

Lizzie and Lyra continue their rewatch of 9-1-1 Season 1 with Episode 9 "Trapped." And like the title says, everyone is trapped. From the mother and son in the elevator, to Athena in her handcuffs and Abby with her mom. All different forms of being trapped. Even Buck is in the mix, trapping himself in a relationship after some bad advice from Bobby. They said, what they said. Tales From the 118 Episode 24: Season 1, Episode 8 - Our "Karma's a B**ch" Rewatch

Lizzie and Lyra continue their rewatch of 9-1-1 Season 1 with Episode 8 "Karma's a B**ch." Bobby and Chimney share character defining moments that show that yes, these two are really close. And Bobby, who has been struggling with his purpose in life, he finds it. (All of this made Lizzie and Lyra cry.) On the Athena front, they're proud of her admitting the painful truth that her marriage is over. As for Hen and Karen, they're still a little lost as to why Hen cheated and feel Karen's pain deeply. Tales From the 118 Episode 23: Season 1, Episode 7 - Our "Full Moon (Creepy AF)" Rewatch

Lizzie and Lyra continue their rewatch of 9-1-1 Season 1 with Episode 7 "Full Moon (Creepy AF)." And as much as they loved the hijinx feeling of some of these spooky calls the 118 had, this episode has problems born from the trials and tribulations of a freshman season. They're looking at you, writers room. Because some of the dialogue was ignorant and Hen and Karen deserved better than that a cheating storyline for one of the only LGBTQ+ couples on TV. Lizzie and Lyra are taking a step back from present 9-1-1 episodes and continuing their rewatch of Season 1! Next up is Episode 6 titled "Heartbreaker" aka a reminder of how much this show really tried to make Abby a thing, Buck and Abby a thing, and for a split second even a love triangle with Buck, Abby AND Bobby as a thing. Alongside that, they talk about what this Valentine's Day episode meant for Athena, who is dealing with the end of her marriage while also dealing with Melora, and what Chimney's return means for the show. Tales From the 118 Episode 18: Season 8, Episode 18 - Our "Seismic Shifts" Review

Lizzie and Lyra dive into 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 18 "Seismic Shifts" aka the Season 8 finale. And while we're happy they leaned into the family dynamic of it all by the end of the episode, they dropped the ball on so many storylines and thought they could tie it all together with a montage. Eddie just needed someone to tell him to stay? Because as much as we loved Chimney's speech, are we going to ignore the whole Chris going to Texas because he saw his dad with a doppelganger of his mom? Buck also needed someone to tell him this was a family for him not to go through with the transfer? What about Maddie's postpartum storyline? Even Hen. What's the actual reason she didn't want to be Captain? Athena truly might be the only one that has an understandable arc in this Season 8 finale. Lizzie and Lyra dive into 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 17 "Don't Drink the Water," which sees the 118 moving through different stages of grief. And unlike the last couple of episodes. We... kind of don't hate it. In fact, some of it, particularly the Buck and Eddie bits, feel like we're getting back on track to something nameless but present between them. And then there's Athena and Chimney. Both care deeply for each other. But grief changes things and Athena is protecting herself. Finally, there's Hen. She doesn't want to be Captain. Tales From the 118 Episode 16: Season 8, Episode 16 - Our "The Last Alarm" Review

Lizzie and Lyra dive into 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 16 "The Last Alarm" is the final goodbye to Peter Krause's Bobby and above all things... it's a pretty frustrating episode. In a vacuum, it's a really well-constructed hour about mourning and the stages of grief, one that particularly focuses on how to push through that initial stage of denial. But this isn't the show we've watched for years. So this grief arc, it doesn't land. And honestly, it's hard not to cry and be angry at the death of Bobby Nash while also hoping against hope that this is just a terrible nightmare. Lizzie and Lyra dive into 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 14 "Sick Day" aka Part 1 of the 2-part "Contagion" thriller. And while they had a set list of things to talk about in this review, it all went out the window because this episode had them worried for everyone. Worried for Bobby, Chimney, Hen, and Ravi because they're stuck inside the virus riddled building. But also worried about Athena, Buck, and Maddie, who can only listen as their family is in danger. Also there's Eddie, who is in Texas and will probably notice something is wrong because Buck hasn't Facetimed him in hours. Tales From the 118 Episode 13: Season 8, Episode 13 - Our "Invisible" Review

Lizzie and Lyra dive into Eddie taking some major steps forward in their review for 9-1-1's Season 8, Episode 13 "Invisible." Both loved that no matter where Eddie is, his tether to the person who he has become... is Buck. And it gives him the strength to be there for his despite how little his mother and father are doing to fix what has been broken between Eddie and Christopher. Then there's the Hen of it all. They don't believe that everyone would forget her birthday. Nevertheless, she has a right to feel bothered by this. Who wouldn't be? Tales From the 118 Episode 12: Season 8, Episode 12 - Our "Disconnected" Review

Lizzie and Lyra dive into Eddie's return to El Paso in their review for 9-1-1's Season 8, Episode 12 "Disconnected." Both loved the way that the show explored Maddie's PTSD after the events of "Voices." But they disagreed on Chris' development (or lack of development) in season 8 so far. And then there's Eddie. He was a walking disaster of an Uber driver but he's trying and that's more than Helena Diaz can say. Finally, they break down what those Buddie calls mean. They also go into Bobby's mommy issues and how he's earned his anger. Finally, they break down the ghost of "Holy Mother of God," how Tommy continues to be a plot device, and how we're not reading in between the lines anymore. We're reading them now. Tales From the 118 Episode 10: Season 8, Episode 10 - Our "Voices" Review

Lizzie and Lyra go into Jennifer Love Hewitt's incredible performance as Maddie and Abigail's Spencer's great guest star spot, even as they discuss some of the issues with the stereotyping in the episode. They also discuss why Maddie Han has been a hero for way longer than some people give her credit for and get serious about Madney as a great ship. Finally, they break down that Buddie goodbye, where the ship is going and what that final shot on Buck means. Tales From the 118 Episode 9: Season 8, Episode 9 - Our "Sob Stories" Review

Lizzie and Lyra go into Season 8 at last, discussing the midseason premiere (aka 8B!), titled "Sob Stories." And it's wiiild ride, with an outstanding Jennifer Love Hewitt in a great episode for Maddie and a rollercoaster ride of emotions for both Buck and Eddie that sort of feels like setup for Buddie and not just in a this is what people want to see happen, but in a this is what the show is setting up kinda way. It's a lot, and they break it all down right here. Contact us at: [email protected] Find us on social media at: talesfromthe118.bsky.social, talesfromthe118 & Tales From the 118
