Talking Movies with My Mom
by Two Bells Media
Talking Movies with My Mom™ is not another movie review podcast. Instead, newbie filmmaker Jackson Bell and his mom, Tamara, choose a topic – such as action anime, worst sequels, and directors’ first movies – then each pick movies based on that topic and watch them together. What started as a family tradition has become a weekly podcast where we spill our thoughts in enthusiastic, entertaining, and definitely unexpected give-and-takes. Join us as we put the FUN in FUNctional family while talking movies, sometimes with other movie-loving guests, but always from a "head" (Jackson) and "heart" (Tamara) perspective.

Duo Directors’ First Movies: Requa and Ficarra & the Daniels
On the Season 6 premiere of Talking Movies with My Mom, we combine this season’s installment of our "Directors’ First Movies" series with our first episode tradition of duos to cover two pairs of directors and their first movies – John Requa & Glenn Ficarra ("I Love You Phillip Morris") and the Daniels ("Swiss Army Man"). We wade into the messiness of how keeping secrets can keep loved ones apart; why a leap of faith doesn’t always stick the landing; and the poignancy of a literal artsy-fartsy film. Movies about Unconventional Couples
On today’s second bonus episode of Talking Movies with My Mom, we’re celebrating Valentine’s Day with the unconventional couple movies "Her" and "The Shape of Water." We deep dive into how difficult it must be to compete with 641 other guys for the love of your life; how a well-placed "Easter egg" can lead to a fairy tale romance; and how these unconventional love stories make us feel conventionally human. This episode is inspired by Jackson’s short story, "Our First and Last Date," in the food horror anthology "Consumed: a horror and dark fiction anthology," published by Arbutus Studios. The book, which will be released on March 3, 2026, is available for pre-order on Amazon or wherever you find your books. For additional information, resources, and a transcript of the episode, visit https://www.podcastics.com/podcast/talking-movies-with-my-mom/ You can also follow us on Instagram @talkingmovieswithmymom. Our Mount Rushmore Movies of ‘25
On Season 5’s first bonus episode of Talking Movies with My Mom, we begin the new year with a look back on our Mount Rushmore of movies from 2025. Like last year, here’s how it works: the four heads on Mount Rushmore are assigned "Best of" categories and we pick our favorite movies that represent each one. And for the second time, neither of us knows which movies the other one chooses. Now because categories like "Best Comedy" and "Best Drama" are so done, we came up with our own list:"Best Movie that Deserved Better"; "Best Heebie-Jeebies Movie";"Best All-the-Feels Movie";"Best Out-of-this-World Movie"; And one to grow on — "Favorite Movie of the Year."For additional information, resources, and a transcript of the episode, visit https://www.podcastics.com/podcast/talking-movies-with-my-mom/ You can also follow us on Instagram @talkingmovieswithmymom. Movies Based on Memoirs with Mallary Tenore Tarpley
On a super-sized Season 5 finale of Talking Movies with My Mom, we’re joined by special guest Mallary Tenore Tarpley, author of the memoir "Slip: Life in the Middle of Eating Disorder Recovery," who helps us kick-start the holidays by talking about three movies based on best-selling memoirs — "Persepolis," "The Glass Castle," and "Can You Ever Forgive Me?"Join us as we travel to a time when forging literary letters required dozens of typewriters; wearing a Michael Jackson pin meant being a public pariah; and the hardest lesson to learn was accepting your parents as they are — flaws and all. A sentiment that Mallary brings home while reading a passage from her book. Oh, the Places We’ll Go: Canadian Movies
On today’s episode of Talking Movies with My Mom, we travel to Canada for this season’s installment of our "Oh, the Places We’ll Go" series. Our first stop is "Scanners," where we expose the cold hard truth about scanner on scanner action, making a cult classic on the fly, and how Canadian Nice creeps in even when murdering the future.Next up, we cross the Northern border into comedy with a big swig of "Strange Brew." We discover Krypto the Superdog’s (un)likely origin story, that the similarities between Bob & Doug & their parents are more than meets the eye, and how a son’s enthusiastic persuasion can lead to the most unexpected casting. For additional information, resources, and a transcript of the episode, visit https://www.podcastics.com/podcast/talking-movies-with-my-mom/ You can also follow us on Instagram @talkingmovieswithmymom. Truth or Fiction: Musical Biopics with Monte Warden
On a super-sized edition of "Talking Movies with My Mom," we’re joined by special guest Monte Warden, a two-time inductee into The Texas Music Hall of Fame as both a solo artist and as a founding member of his band, The Wagoneers, and writer of hit songs for recording artists like George Strait. Together, we sort truth from fiction in three of our favorite musicians’ life stories: "Rocketman"; "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story"; and "The Buddy Holly Story."Come for the investigation into a levitating piano (never happened), recording in a college restroom (actually happened and have a plaque to prove it), and mixing up a Fender Strat with a Fender Telecaster (also happened, and how could it?). Stay for the conversation about what makes a biopic — the facts of the life or the spirit of the man. And, of course, the singing (Monte, not us). Halloween Movies: Cannibal Style
On today’s episode of Talking Movies with My Mom, we’re observing Halloween by sinking our teeth into two deliciously deviant movies — "Ravenous" and "Bones and All." We explore the movies’s shared themes of rejection, loneliness, and eventual self-awareness; why Colonel Ives’s stirring of the pot leads to more than just yummy Knox Beef Stew; and how a typical slumber party can be upended by a single bite. This episode is inspired by Jackson’s short story, "Our First and Last Date," in the food horror anthology "Consumed," to be published in early 2026 by Arbutus Films. Over generations, Redford proved to be iconic both on and off the screen. Join us as we reflect on his legacy as an actor who was more than just a pretty face, bringing charisma and emotion to what might have been one-note characters and leaving audiences gasping, laughing, and definitely bawling. Adventures with Disney Movies (1995-2005)

Oh, the Places We'll Go: Mexican Movies
On today’s episode of Talking Movies with My Mom, we travel to Mexico for this season’s installment of our "Oh, the Places We’ll Go" series. Our first stop is "Y tu mama tambien," where we lay bare the idea that sex-fueled teenage road trip movies can be surprisingly poignant, winning the "prize" can come with unforeseen consequences, and an end-credit song can add an unexpected exclamation point to a movie’s themes. Next up, we cross the border into B-Horror with "Santo vs. the Vampire Women." We honor its star, luchador El Santo, for his enduring legacy as a pop culture icon and folk hero, grapple with the concept of werewolf vampires, and pin down Santo’s playbook for how to kill the undead with crosses, sunlight, and a blast of pyrotechnics. For additional information, resources, and a transcript of the episode, visit https://www.podcastics.com/podcast/talking-movies-with-my-mom/ You can also follow us on Instagram @talkingmovieswithmymom. Schu helps us expose the tropes and truisms of the genre by spotlighting the ways noir can be used as a trigger to discuss social themes; how Candy is sweet and commies can be beat; and why running into an airplane propeller isn’t always proof of guilt. Directors’ First Movies: Jackson & Rodriguez
On the Season 2 finale of Talking Movies with My Mom, we’re going back to where it began for two of our favorite directors – Peter Jackson ("Bad Taste") and Robert Rodriguez ("El Mariachi"). We consider the power of youthful energy and scrappy ingenuity when making a movie on a low budget, how a first film foreshadows a director’s vision and style, and the life lesson of using seagulls to break your fall. ABOUT THIS SHOW
Talking Movies with My Mom™ is not another movie review podcast.
