Layer Cake
Welcome to the layer cake, son. This week we watched Layer Cake, an Ugie staple. We mostly just praise Daniel Craig the whole time. But we give lots of love to everything else in this gem of a movie. Matthew Vaughn put on a masterclass and we unpack everything we can.We also play a game Ugie made up called "Every British actor is in Harry Potter," a game we will be continuing when we do future British movies.🎙️ The Black and White Cinema Podcast with Kev 'n' Ugie📺 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@kev_n_ugie🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-n-ugie/id1874324373🎧 Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/9d1ba56a-bfe8-45c8-aad8-47a28a3f3829/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-'n'-ugie🌐 allmylinks: https://allmylinks.com/kev-n-ugie#LayerCake #DanielCraig #MatthewVaughn #Podcast #BritishCrime

Lethal Weapon
Lethal Weapon is in that elite tier of 80s action movies. It is a pillar of the buddy cop genre with some truly iconic scenes. And on this rewatch, we find a few more layers to it, some of which are tough to sit with.Danny Glover and Mel Gibson have incredible chemistry and command the screen, both together and individually. They hold the tension in the dark subject matter while still making you appreciate a good action scene when it comes. We also spend a lot of time on how this movie portrays mental health. It's not entirely great, but the movie reconciles itself well. Ultimately, we just don't understand how the franchise went from this to Lethal Weapon 4.🎙️ The Black and White Cinema Podcast with Kev 'n' Ugie🎧 Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ty7i0Akh8I&list=PLCch5fP8dP7nfW2DLvHb_gWczp-axKIKE🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1I3Fl2h...🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast...🎧 Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/9d1...🌐 allmylinks: https://allmylinks.com/kev-n-ugie#LethalWeapon #MelGibson #DannyGlover #Podcast #ActionMovie

Puff Puff Pass
Puff Puff Pass is a low-budget, straight-to-DVD stoner movie. Thankfully, it's self-aware enough to still be funny and punch above its weight class.vKev and Ugie are here to walk you through this Mekhi Phifer vehicle in all its... glory?Yes, it stars an absolute piece of trash in Danny Masterson. Yes, it looks like it was shot 10 years before it was. Yes, it's racist, homophobic, transphobic, classist, and doesn't have any "good guys." But maybe we suck too because we laughed (almost) constantly. What this movie tells us for sure is that studios aren't always required to put together a script that is legitimately funny. If you can set your morals aside for comedy, you'll probably laugh. If you can't... this is probably one to skip. It's free on Tubi and on YouTube here:https://youtu.be/6Tb2IRpHe60🎙️ The Black and White Cinema Podcast with Kev 'n' Ugie📺 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@kev_n_ugie🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-n-ugie/id1874324373🎧 Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/9d1ba56a-bfe8-45c8-aad8-47a28a3f3829/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-'n'-ugie🌐 allmylinks: https://allmylinks.com/kev-n-ugie#PuffPuffPass #MekhiPhifer #StonerComedy #Podcast #IndieFilm

Head of State
Head of State (2003) is certainly not perfect, but it is hilarious and eerily prescient. Kev and Ugie are here to talk all about this gem that Chris Rock wrote, directed, and starred in. It hits harder on politics and class than it gets credit for, while also just being a genuinely funny movie. The boys get into the comedy and how much they love it, precisely because much of it is Rock's throw-away stand-up bits. They also cover the political satire and class commentary that lands just as well today as it did in 2003. Best of all, Bernie Mac absolutely delivers as the perfect companion to bring everything home.🎙️ The Black and White Cinema Podcast with Kev 'n' Ugie📺 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@kev_n_ugie🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-n-ugie/id1874324373🎧 Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/9d1ba56a-bfe8-45c8-aad8-47a28a3f3829/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-'n'-ugie🌐 allmylinks: https://allmylinks.com/kev-n-ugie#HeadOfState #ChrisRock #BernieMac #Podcast #PoliticalComedy

Training Day
This week Kev 'n' Ugie watched Training Day! Truly one of the greatest of all time and a big favorite of Ugie's. Antoine Fuqua made a work of art that gives you more each time you see it. Each performance is flawless while Denzel's is transcendent. And, of course, the boys send love to the queen Eva Mendez. The guys spend time on Fuqua's direction and the intricacies of how he makes you feel this movie, not just watch it. They jump into the themes of "the system" and how this movie represents so much more than its plot. There is also endless Denzel fanboying.🎙️ The Black and White Cinema Podcast with Kev 'n' Ugie📺 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@kev_n_ugie🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-n-ugie/id1874324373🎧 Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/9d1ba56a-bfe8-45c8-aad8-47a28a3f3829/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-'n'-ugie🌐 allmylinks: https://allmylinks.com/kev-n-ugie#TrainingDay #DenzelWashington #AntoineFuqua #Podcast #CrimeFilm

Smokin' Aces
This week's episode is the 2006 action whirlpool that is Smokin' Aces. Kev is rejoined by Maseo to talk about this tightly-constructed ensemble romp and all of the things we loved about it (hint: mostly Alicia Keys). The boys break down all of the characters, their plots, and how quickly those plans fall apart. We talk about Ryan Reynolds' subtle acting that he doesn't even attempt anymore, Jeremy Piven's slow erosion of sanity, Ray Liotta's general badassery, and how Chris Pine deserves an Oscar for his unhinged portrayal as Darwin Tremor.Plus, we set up the sequel that should've happened - JUSTICE FOR BEANIE!🎙️ The Black and White Cinema Podcast with Kev 'n' Ugie📺 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@kev_n_ugie🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-n-ugie/id1874324373🎧 Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/9d1ba56a-bfe8-45c8-aad8-47a28a3f3829/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-'n'-ugie🌐 allmylinks: https://allmylinks.com/kev-n-ugie#SmokinsAces #2000sMovies #CrimeFilm #Podcast #ActionMovie

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
UGIE IS BACK!!! And we're bringing you a special 4/20 episode for all of your celebrations today and throughout the week. Of course that means a stoner comedy and we had to do Kev's favorite: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. With Kev watching from the point of view of an entrenched (okay maybe obsessive) Kevin Smith superfan and Ugie watching for the first time, we had a blast talking about this cameo-driven rollercoaster ride of ridiculous comedy. We talk about the blurred lines between Jay and Jason Mewes. We talk about Ugo's lifetime hatred of Ben Affleck. We talk about how Charmed and Buffy set us up to love brunettes who are mean to us (hi, Eliza Dushku, we love you). And more than anything, we just appreciate each and every actor who went all-in on whatever screen time they had.🎙️ The Black and White Cinema Podcast with Kev 'n' Ugie📺 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@kev_n_ugie🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-n-ugie/id1874324373🎧 Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/9d1ba56a-bfe8-45c8-aad8-47a28a3f3829/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-'n'-ugie🌐 allmylinks: https://allmylinks.com/kev-n-ugie#JayAndSilentBob #KevinSmith #ViewAskewniverse #Podcast #CultClassic

Porco Rosso
With Ugie still fighting his way back from Hades, we welcome Maseo in front of the camera to join Kev in talking about a true anime classic: Porco Rosso. We don't think it's a particularly hot take to say that Porco Rosso represents the pinnacle of Japanese animation. It's beautiful, intentional, detailed, relatable, uplifting, and has lessons embedded in its thesis that are as apt today as they were in the 1930s or 1990s. Put simply, it's a perfect film and you'll love it whether its your first experience with anime or you're a JoJo-obsessed weeb with agoraphobia.Join us as we dive into the themes, symbolism, and acts of Hayao Miyazaki's breathtaking meditation on war, guilt, isolation, community, and a good ol' seaplane.🎙️ The Black and White Cinema Podcast with Kev 'n' Ugie📺 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@kev_n_ugie🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-n-ugie/id1874324373🎧 Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/9d1ba56a-bfe8-45c8-aad8-47a28a3f3829/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-'n'-ugie🌐 allmylinks: https://allmylinks.com/kev-n-ugie#PorcoRosso #StudioGhibli #HayaoMiyazaki #Podcast #AnimatedFilm

The Big Lebowski
Kev (who has never seen this movie) is joined by guest hosts Web and Eric to cover The Big Lebowski, the Coen Brothers film that somehow turned a bowling-obsessed stoner into one of the most iconic characters of all time. Torque
Torque (2004) is a motorcycle action movie that tried to copy The Fast and the Furious' homework and somehow still managed to get an F-minus. Kev and Ugie watched it so you don't have to.The good news: the motorcycles are sick, the stunt work is awesome, Ice Cube is the best thing in the film by a mile, we have 2004 af Dane Cook cameos, and Adam Scott is... present. The bad news: the rest of the cast is there too.Do yourself a favor and don't watch the movie, just listen to us tell you about it.🎙️ The Black and White Cinema Podcast with Kev 'n' Ugie📺 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@kev_n_ugie🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-n-ugie/id1874324373🎧 Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/9d1ba56a-bfe8-45c8-aad8-47a28a3f3829/the-black-and-white-cinema-podcast-with-kev-'n'-ugie🌐 allmylinks: https://allmylinks.com/kev-n-ugie#Torque #2000sMovies #ClassicFilm #Podcast #ActionMovie

The Fast and the Furious
Kev 'n' Ugie cover The Fast and the Furious, the 2001 street racing film that launched one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood (and deserves more credit than it gets). The cars are fantastic, Vin Diesel and Paul Walker have real chemistry, and Michelle Rodriguez is a standout from her first scene. They also get into what early 2000s tuner car culture actually looked like: a community built around imports, custom builds, and late-night meets. A world the film captured well, and one worth revisiting.🎙️ The Black and White Cinema Podcast with Kev 'n' Ugie🎧 Spotify | Apple Podcasts | Amazon Podcasts📺 Full episodes on YouTube#FastAndFurious #2000sMovies #ClassicFilm #Podcast #ActionMovie

Young Guns
Kev 'n' Ugie cover Young Guns, the 1988 Brat Pack Western that turned Billy the Kid into a rock star... or maybe just a psychopath. We get into all six Regulators (mostly Kiefer's hair) and Kevin's zealous, deep love of this movie.Emilio Estevez. Kiefer Sutherland. Lou Diamond Phillips. Charlie Sheen. Dermot Mulroney. Casey Siemaszko. Six names. One epic 80s western.🎙️ The Black and White Cinema Podcast with Kev 'n' Ugie🎧 Apple Podcasts | Amazon Podcasts📺 Full episodes on YouTube
