    S1E17 - The Book of 2 Samuel - Lesson 17 (Chapters 23 & 24)

Title: David's Final Days (2 Samuel Chapters 23 & 24) - Lesson from May 11, 2025 Introduction: Last words are often monumental. Legally, deathbed confessions are considered to be reliable. Some last words are so special that they are taught in classrooms. For instance take Nathan Hale's famous quote: I regret that I have but one life to give for my country. -Nathan Hale I go to prepare a place for you. -Harriet Tubman Jesus is preparing a place for me. -George Washington Carver’s I want to go, I’m ready to go, God take me. -Dwight D Eisenhower They couldn’t hit an Elephant at this distance. -Gen John Sedgwick (Civil War) King David also left some final words which are recorded for us in chapter 23 of 2nd Samuel.  David’s Final Words: 2 Samuel 23:1-7 - The Introduction by the scribe - David praises the LORD and acknowledges His Spirit - David acknowledges that his own power and reign is from God. - David honors his covenant with God - The futility of the man without God.  David’s Mighty Men 2 Samuel 23:8-39 David’s Census 2 Samuel 24:1-9 The Lord’s judgement on David’s sin 2 Samuel 24:10-17 David builds an altar 2 Samuel 24:18-25 1 Kings 1 & 2: David is Old Adonijah sets himself up as king Nathan & Bathsheba appear before David Solomon is anointed as king over Israel David instructs Solomon The death of David Conclusion: David was a boy who did not simply rise from obscurity to greatness. David was a boy who God looked down upon and chose as His instrument. David was a boy who became a “man after God’s own heart”.  David, of course, was only human. We read and know about his sins. However, God never removes his titles. God’s Holy Spirit continued to direct the scripture writers to refer to David as a man after God’s own heart. Jesus would take the title of “son of David”  As a boy David valued personal worship. He was the humble shepherd who worshiped in Psalms as God’s Holy Spirit moved upon him to compose.  As both a boy and a man David’s faith would carry him into battle again and again against overwhelming odds. As a leader, there is none like David. He would find followers in bot Israel and abroad that would follow him into battle and support his kingdom.  As a sinner, David understood repentance. Once he recognized his sin he not only confessed but then turned in repentance.  Following his repentance David would accept the consequences of sin but then continue to serve his LORD. He did not see his failures as his end. He was not deceived into quitting the work that God had for him.  Lastly, David never sought his own will. Yes, he had moments of pride but David never lost sight of the fact that his throne belonged to the LORD. David’s kingdom was the LORD’s. It was for the LORD to give and it was for the LORD to remove. It was David who would repeat the words, “Who am I” again and again.   So, As we conclude our study; who was David? For us David is an example. He was a warrior in our times of adversary, He is a companion ion our grief and our failures. He is a type of Christ in our hopeful expectation. Finally, he is our brother in Christ with whom one day we will meet to rule and reign together as we serve Christ in His Kingdom.  The Settled In Heaven podcast series consists of weekly episodes that are recorded in our Sunday School class at Stuart Heights Baptist Church in Hixson, TN. Title: The Second Rebellion (2 Samuel Chapters 20 - 22) - Lesson from May 4, 2025 Introduction: Rebellion and war continues. David and his men will prevail. Chapter 20: The Rebellion of Sheba (“Seven”) Chapter 21: David avenges the Gibeonites and War with the Philistines Chapter 22: David’s Song of Deliverance Conclusion: Next week we will conclude the book of 2nd Samuel. 3. 15

    S1E15 - The Book of 2 Samuel - Lesson 15 (Chapters 17 - 19)

Title: The Tables Turn for David (2 Samuel Chapters 17 - 19) - Lesson from April 27, 2025 Introduction: As I mentioned the last time that we met, The rebellion led by Absalom only lasted about 4 years from start to finish. So, in this week's lesson we will see the rebellion brought to a quick ending.  I have also mentioned in the past that while it is quite easy to focus on David’s colossal failures, in doing so, we run the risk of missing some spiritual applications. In chapters 17 - 20, once again David demonstrates why he is known as a man after God’s own heart. Throughout these chapters and even the previous ones, David refuses to force his own will. He is willing to sacrifice himself and his throne if that is the will of Jehovah. He allows his enemies to mock and scorn him without rebuttal. David only seeks the will of Jehovah and not that of his own making.  For me, David once again stands out as a type of Christ. I know and understand that others will disagree. However, I cannot help but draw on the parallels within these chapters and be reminded of the humility and the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Christ did not suffer as a king. He left his throne room on high and chose to lower himself. Yet, once the suffering was over he once again rose to the throne where He is established forever. He is the true Lion of the tribe of Judah. 4. 14

    S1E14 - The Book of 2 Samuel - Lesson 14 (Chapters 15 & 16)

Title: Politics as Usual (2 Samuel Chapters 15 & 16) - Lesson from April 13, 2025 Introduction: Money, Power, Jealousy, Greed, Pride, all of these things have existed since the garden of Eden. We are fooling ourselves if we believe that those in and around the house of David were immune.  We can believe that David’s past sins did play a part in David’s troubles. However, I think that all too often we are tempted to focus our attention on numbering David’s sins as if he deserves everything that comes his way. When we fall prey to that we miss some valuable truths: David’s enemies are responsible to the LORD for their own choices. It is God who established David’s throne and He has not removed that title from David.  David remains humble and seeks the good of Israel through persecution and betrayal. David submits his kingdom to the hand of the Lord. Outline: Absalom's Conspiracy David Flees Jerusalem Ziba, a False Servant. Davis is Cursed Absalom Enters Jerusalem Conclusion: Absalom’s rebellion will continue for a short while. God did allow the uprising and the revolt. However, He will not allow Absalom to simply take the throne. Next week we will again look to cover multiple chapters, (17-19).  Unfortunately, this revolt led by Absalom will not be the last of David’s troubles.  The Settled In Heaven podcast series consists of weekly episodes that are recorded in our Sunday School class at Stuart Heights Baptist Church in Hixson, TN. S1E13 - The Book of 2 Samuel - Lesson 13 (Chapter 14)

Title: Banishment & Restoration (2 Samuel Chapter 14) - Lesson from April 6, 2025 Introduction: Last week's lesson allowed us to dig into scripture and evaluate a doctrine by using additional scripture. That is the primary practice and possibly the only reliable method in interpreting scripture and establishing doctrine.  This Sunday we will continue to work through the book of 2 Samuel. The remainder of the book is a story of betrayal, and political maneuvering. Once again we acknowledge that scripture makes no attempt to cover up or even downplay the sins and shortcomings of God’s people. Scripture is the story of fallen mankind that can only be redeemed by a merciful savior.  We should never forget that we are no different in this same regard. We are no better and no more deserving than those that we read of in scripture. Without Mercy and Grace we are doomed.  Chapter 14 concerns itself with 4 principle characters: David, Joab, Absalom and “the woman of Tekoa. Each will play their own part in the narrative Outline: The context of chapter 14 is found in the events of the previous chapter Joab senses the heart of David. The woman of Tekoa Tekoa’s plea David realizes that this is another Allegory for his own instruction David grants Joab’s request to deliver & restore Absalom Conclusion: One would hope that this would be the end of David’s and Israel’s trouble. However, in the coming days, this same Absalom who was restored will become a thorn in the flesh of David and lead a rebellion which will bring turmoil to Israel. S1E3 - The Book of 2 Samuel - Lesson 3 (Chapters 3 & 4)

Title: 2 Samuel 3 and 4. War and Politics - Lesson from Sunday January 26, 2025 Introduction: Chapter 3 opens by letting us know that “there was a long war between the house of David and the house of Saul.” It comes as no surprise that David’s house grew stronger and Saul’s house grew weaker. After all, this fits the plan of God that was put into play some 15 to 20 years prior.  Not only that, but the leadership of Saul’s house was destroyed while the leadership in the house of David thrived.  As our title suggests, along with the war in Israel, political maneuvering would also be a factor. Again, this is no surprise since that is almost always the case. War and politics seem to go together.  In addition to the “long war” mentioned, Chapter 3 also begins by unveiling some internal strife in Israel which will lead us to the aforementioned political maneuvering. Israel demands a King! Saul is anointed the 1st King of Israel. Israel wanted a King for the wrong reasons. It was not God’s timing. Israel rebelled and demanded a King anyway.
