The CrossFit Pittsburgh Podcast

We have been a CrossFit Affiliate since 2006.  We are one of the originals.  My wife and I opened our doors when I was home between deployments to Iraq.  It's been an amazing adventure spanning thousands of miles between us over the course of 12 years deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.  We formed amazing bonds.  Lost good friends.  And learned a lot about ourselves and our community.  Throughout the course of this Podcast we will discuss all of that and more.  We will talk about the people we have encountered along the way and the lessons we learned.

Scale, Belong, Remember: What Community Fitness Means

New walls, fresh energy, same purpose: build a place where anyone can train hard, belong, and get better. We just moved into 2585 Freeport Road, and even with the podcast gear still in boxes, the momentum is real. We added HYROX training and new class times, not to chase trends, but to meet the needs we hear every day—more conditioning options, more flexible schedules, and more paths to progress that fit real life.We also tackle a myth that won’t die: that CrossFit is only for the elite. If your first impression came from Games highlights on YouTube, you’re seeing the Super Bowl of our world, not the local field where most of us learn the basics. We break down universal scalability with clear examples so you understand how the same workout can meet a beginner and a veteran exactly where they are. With smart coaching, nutrition, and sleep, the ceiling moves higher than you think. Then we turn to the season ahead. The CrossFit Open is back, and we run each week’s workout as our Friday WOD, complete with scaled divisions and age groups so everyone can participate. We share how to approach it without stress, how to log a score for fun, and how that shared effort lights up a room. We also host the True Challenge on April 18, the evolved Festivus-style competition for novice and intermediate athletes. We explain our commitment to fair divisions and why protecting the spirit of the event matters. Last November’s feedback on our new venue proved how much environment shapes performance. To close, we honor Sgt 1st Class Ryan Gloyer, a Ranger and Green Beret from Zielienople, with a Murph-style memorial workout. The Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Thiel College, along with many of their fellow classmates are taking it on at 4 pm today, and we invite you to pause, reflect, and, if you’re nearby, join. This is where fitness meets meaning: shared work, shared memory, shared purpose. If this resonated, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs a nudge to start, and leave a quick review so more people can find the show. Then come train with us—let’s scale smart, push hard, and do the right thing together.Support the show

    Moving Forward:CrossFit Pittsburgh's New Location

Change is on the horizon for CrossFit Pittsburgh as we prepare to leave our East End location after more than a decade of building an extraordinary fitness community. We're just days away from opening our doors at One Alexander Center, 2585 Freeport Road—a move that represents not just a change of address but a bold step forward in our 20-year journey. The new location offers remarkable advantages for our members. Situated just off Route 28, we're now less than 10 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh and the North Side. With spacious 20-foot ceilings (compared to our current 15-foot ones) and a contiguous training space uninterrupted by structural elements, we're creating an environment that will elevate your workout experience. Most importantly, this location provides enhanced safety and accessibility for our entire community—something I consider non-negotiable for our members and their families. There's something beautifully cyclical about this move. Our new home at Alexander Center began as a racquetball club in the late 1970s before evolving into a fitness center—mirroring my own early career at Racquetball One where I met my wife while we both worked there as undergraduates. That community-centered approach profoundly influenced how we built CrossFit Pittsburgh, which began with zero members and pure passion. Now, as we "burn the ships" like Cortés and commit fully to this next chapter, I invite you to join us. After all, "the worst risk is not making a move." Check out our Facebook page for moving updates and equipment sales as we prepare for this exciting transition. What's behind us is of no concern—it's what lies ahead that matters.Support the show

Powerless but Not Hopeless: Weathering Life's Storms

When storms strike, our true character emerges. The recent devastating weather that hit western Pennsylvania did more than knock out power lines—it revealed the stark contrast between those who complain and those who contribute.Witnessing the social media response to tragedy left me disheartened. After someone lost their life to a downed power line, keyboard warriors rushed to judgment instead of showing compassion. This isn't who we should be. My philosophy is simple: help if you can, encourage if you can't help, and if you can't encourage, stay silent. But amid this frustration, I've found remarkable hope in an unexpected place—the Kappa Sigma fraternity at Teal College. These young men embody service in ways that put many adults to shame. From their 72-hour "seesaw-a-thon" fundraisers for veterans to physically rebuilding a fire-damaged VFW hall and conducting annual 9/11 memorial stair climbs, they're proving that the next generation might just save us from ourselves. As a Navy veteran, seeing their dedication to country and community restores my faith when I need it most. The ongoing power outage—now stretching into its fifth day for many—offers valuable lessons about preparation and perspective. Do you have backup plans for your backup plans? Are your flashlights working, batteries fresh, and alternative power sources ready? And most importantly, can we remember that our "power outage problems" pale compared to what much of the world faces daily? Some of our neighbors with electric well pumps don't even have water. Maybe this experience will help us appreciate what we normally take for granted. Remember: we get through this together, by helping when we can and encouraging when we can't.Have you checked on your neighbors during this outage? #33: Two childhood friends and the Evolution of Evolution Jiu-Jitsu, Pittsburgh

Ever wondered how a lifelong journey in martial arts begins with a simple need for self-defense? Join us as we explore this question through our personal stories, starting from the wrestling mats at Central Catholic with my childhood friend, Rob Serrao. We reminisce about our early beginnings in combat sports, from Isshinryu Karate to Boxing, and how an unconventional karate school run by Rocco in 1976 set us on our path. Just before the Navy called, I faced the black belt test, a pivotal moment intertwined with the closing of Rocco's dojo. Each memory is a testament to the unique, non-franchise approach that shaped our martial arts journeys. The evolution continues as we recount our experiences moving up the ranks in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, from white belt to black belt. Life threw many changes our way, from career shifts to the global pandemic, but the spirit of martial arts kept us grounded. We created a community, a training club born out of a garage, which became a sanctuary for growth and friendship. COVID-19 brought its challenges, but it also led to exciting developments, like a family member's transition to varsity wrestling. The passion for jiu-jitsu is something we eagerly pass on to the next generation, realizing dreams of dedicated spaces and building a supportive environment.Lou Armanzani’s influence on our martial arts journey has been profound, leading us to affiliate with the Armazzani Jiu-Jitsu Academy. His mentorship is invaluable and it reinforces the importance of perseverance and personal growth, whether on the jiu-jitsu mats, in a CrossFit gym, or in life. Through shared stories and camaraderie, we celebrate the strength and respect imbued by these disciplines. Our narrative isn’t just about techniques but a broader vision of evolution in life. Looking forward, we host guest trainers and offer free drop-in sessions, inviting you to experience the community and empowerment found in martial arts.Support the show

Our mission: to navigate the treacherous terrain of Gaza, where the camaraderie of embassy staff interweaves with the high-stakes game of international relations. Yet, the episode takes a somber turn as we recall the harrowing aftermath of an attack at Mike's Place, the resilience it demanded of our community, and how it starkly contrasted with the vibrancy of life's mundane moments. We wrap our journey with reflections on the evolving private security landscape and the personal growth we garner from our relentless pursuit of mission success. Join us for an episode that promises not just stories from the field, but a profound exploration of the human elements that shape our trials and triumphs.Support the show

Episode 4a: Tel Aviv, Echoes of Conflict Experiencing Israel Through a Contractor's Eyes

When the world shifted on its axis on September 11, 2001, I found myself at a crossroad between the urgent need to reach out to my loved ones and the burning desire to return to the service of my country. I stepped into a new chapter with DynCorp, where the stakes were high and the mission critical. My narrative begins with the palpable sense of purpose that comes from joining a team determined to make a difference in the wake of national tragedy. The heart of the episode pulses with the tales of camaraderie and the gravity of preparing for a diplomatic mission in Tel Aviv. I bring to life the streets thrumming with tension and vitality, and the eclectic mix of colleagues, the legendary figures who shaped our operations. Alongside me is my Co-host, Frayne whose insights add depth to our discussion on the kaleidoscope of experiences, including a gripping anecdote from a firearms training session at the Crucible—an unvarnished look at the high level of vigilance our roles demanded.Concluding this journey, I recount the ethical quandaries and the stark realities that underpin private military contracting in a post-9/11 world. From the story of Jim's unwavering principles to the unexpected challenges and anomalies of working in Israel, this episode peels back the layers of what it means to operate in the shadows of global conflict. We delve into the contrast between the beauty of a country marred by conflict and the peculiar, indelible impressions left on those who tread its soil in service of peace and justice.Support the show

Silent Supporters: The Reality of Online Loyalty

Ever been left hanging with only a private thumbs-up from a friend when you really needed their public backing? You're not alone. Bullying (Navigating Fatherhood: Instilling Strength and Compassion in Our Sons)

Good morning to all our listeners out there grappling with the complex roles of fatherhood and the tough lessons we have to teach our kids. Today's talk is spurred by a profound passage that hit home for me, a reminder that while we strive to nurture our boys into kind souls, we must also equip them with the strength to confront and challenge the darkness that exists in the world. It's a precarious balance between teaching them to be peacemakers and yet, protectors when necessary—a mantle that we, as fathers and parents, bear.In a candid recounting of a personal family episode, I take you through the confusion that arises when our children face the age-old problem of bullies—heightened in today's world where the lines between self-defense and aggression seem blurred. The story involves a call from the vice principal about my son, an incident that echoes the experiences of many parents, and prompts a discussion on how our society's approach to handling bullies and self-defense has shifted over time. The conversation promises to be an insightful exploration of our roles as parents in guiding our children to stand their ground, while still advocating for peace in an increasingly complex social landscape.Support the show

Challenging Perspectives on Safety, Preparedness, and Survival

Do you truly understand what it means to be prepared? This episode challenges the very notion of safety and survival, taking you on an intense and introspective journey through a powerful passage from Jack Carr's book, "True Believer." We dissect the profound dedication of a relentless fighter, training tirelessly in the face of adversity. The stark realism of this reading compels us to reconsider the threats around us, and the unyielding enemies training relentlessly to harm us.Dive deep into our personal experiences with tactical weapons training as we confront the illusion that simply owning a weapon guarantees safety. We argue that true defense extends beyond weapon possession, encompassing mental resilience, physical readiness, and spiritual fortitude. Through this provocative discussion, we aim to reshape your perspective on self-defense, preparedness, and survival. Embrace this opportunity to redefine your understanding of safety and preparedness in our unpredictable world.Support the show
