The Curious Wanderer Bible Study

A Bible Study for the curious or the wandering among us.

  1. 15

Gen 20: The danger of jumping to conclusions

Have you ever jumped to an incorrect conclusion? In Genesis 20, we see Abraham doing just that and only because of God's goodness and rescue is Abraham saved from the consequences. We also see in Abimelech how to handle when someone incorrectly jumps to conclusions about you. We hope you enjoy this episode.

  2. 14

    Gen 19: A parental warning

In Genesis 19 we see Lot escaping the destruction of Sodom, and then not being willing to live near a city. This choice has dramatic consequences for his family, and it serves as warning for parents about the dangers of over protection of your children.

  3. 13

Gen 18: If you are ready, amazing things can happen

In Genesis 18, we see the story of Abraham meeting God in 3 persons and a discussion around the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. However all of this required Abraham to be ready to see God and ready to notice God approaching him. We explore this idea further in this episode.

  4. 12

Gen 16: Scared people make stupid choices

In this episode we do another perspective of Genesis 16, from a psychological perspective and also see God's miraculous reconciliation abilities.

  5. 11

    Gen 16-17: Waiting

In Genesis 16-17 we see what can happen when we lose sight of God's plan while we are waiting for it to happen. Even though Abram and Sarai went "off script" God was still there for them and helped them get back on track for his plan. We see that God is always there for us when we drift from his plan, to help reunite us with him.

  6. 10

Gen 15: Do you have to ask?

In this episode we discover a really cool question and the answer to it. Do you really need to ask God for the things that are most important to us? In Genesis 15, we see that the answer is a resounding yes, and this has deep implications for our relationship with God and our relationship with others.

  7. 9

    Gen 14: Be Prepared

Chapter 14 of Genesis is an action packed sequence. We can learn a lot about how God wants us to be prepared for action, and to be humble in the results of that action. We also see how to chose your allies well.

  8. 8

    Gen 12-13: Big Goals

Genesis 12-13 has some really great insights for us when we find and pursue big goals in our lives. It also has the amazingly perplexing story of Abram and Sarai in Egypt that we dig into. The key things we learn in this episode about big goals in our lives are: Listen for God's direction on big goals, just as Abram did in the beginning of Genesis 12 Be ready to act: immediately after Abram hears God's call, he starts acting in accordance with that. Be ready to adjust: big goals require time and adjustment. Abram got to Canaan, but he needed to adjust his plan and temporarily go to Egypt because of famine Be prepared for success: when you have initial success you may have to adjust plans and change strategies. Abram had to separate from Lot because their mutual success put their people in conflict. When God gives you success, be grateful and continue. Abram built an altar to the Lord after he and Lot split, to show thanks to God for his success and continued help along the way towards his larger goal.

Gen 11: Transitions and The Tower of Babel

In this episode we wander around the Tower of Babel story, and try to appreciate transitions from one perspective to another as we move from the flood story to the time of Abram.

  10. 6

    Gen 9-10: New beginnings

In this episode we explore the results after the flood, and a new axiom that arises. We saw in the previous episode that God needs us for his plans, in this episode we learn that God continues to need us after we've completed our part in a plan.

  11. 5

Gen 7-8: A new axiom (God needs you)

In Genesis 7-8 we see a new axiom we need to add to our list. As we read about Noah and his actions, we see that there is another axiom: God needs us for his plans! Listen to hear more about this idea.

  12. 4

    Gen 5-6: Transitions and context

In Genesis 5-6 we transition to the time of Noah and begin to see the context for what is going to happen. We take a look at both the transition and contexts and see what we can discover by wandering around a bit.

    Why "Curious Wanderer"?

In this episode I explore the choice of name for this Bible study. After all, in episode 2, we see that God punishes Cain by making him wander the face of the earth. Why would we want to be associated with that? Well, there are different ways to wander and different reasons to wander. I explore these ideas a bit in this episode.

  14. 2

Gen 3: A wandering deep dive of dialogue

In our previous episode, we explored the fall and its fallout in Genesis 3-4. There is something very deep and fascinating about the dialogue between Satan/The Serpent and Eve that I wanted to explore with y'all. Something about the phrasing and structure of that dialogue piqued my curiosity and I hope y'all find it informational.

  15. 1

    Gen 3-4: The first question

In this episode we explore Genesis 3-4, the fall and the fallout. Highlights include: What was the first question in the Bible? What was the second question? How do those relate to the overall theme of the Bible? What can we learn about our lives today from that info?

  16. 0

Gen 1-2: The axioms of the Bible

In this first episode we go through Genesis 1-2 the story of creation. We discover that there are universal rules about how we read, understand, and use the Bible in our daily lives. In mathematics, we call these kind of rules "axioms". The axioms are: Everything depends on God Communication creates and changes the world Communication requires steps Communication requires a perspective to speak from We are meant for community The more removed from God we are, the more vulnerable we are God has a plan
