Price Like You Mean It: The Psychology of Pricing Your Creative Work

Welcome back to Pam Speaks 2 You, the podcast for independent authors and creative professionals who are done playing small and ready to build something real. I am your host, Pamela Hilliard Owens, and I am so glad you've decided to listen to Season 2, Episode 13. Now, I have to ask you something: When was the last time someone asked what you charge, and you felt that little flutter of panic? That tiny voice that popped up and whispered, 'Is that too much? Will they think I'm being greedy? Maybe I should just lower it a little...' If that sounded familiar, you are in exactly the right place today, because we are talking about pricing. Specifically, we are talking about the psychology behind why so many of us — writers, artists, coaches, creatives of every kind — consistently charge less than we should. And more importantly, we're going to talk about what to do about it. Here's what I want you to take away from this episode. One: you will understand the real reason you underprice — and spoiler, it has almost nothing to do with your actual market. Two: you'll understand how your price affects the way buyers perceive your work before they've even read a single page. And three: you'll walk away with specific, practical steps to start pricing with confidence — and a script for how to talk about it without sweating through your shirt. And you deserve to do it with full visibility—not half-blind, hoping for the best. Your Monthly Business Review is not a chore. It's an act of respect for yourself and for the business you're building. It says, "I take this seriously." I'm paying attention. I'm in it intentionally." Task Management or Project Management: What is the Difference?

Owens, your host, and today, in Season 2, Episode 11, we're tackling a question that comes up constantly with my clients: What's the real difference between task management and project management? And more importantly, which one do you actually need? If you're like most creatives, you've probably heard these terms thrown around interchangeably. Someone tells you to "use task management," another person says you need "project management," and honestly, it all starts to sound the same. But here's the thing: understanding the difference between these two approaches could literally transform how you work. By the end of this episode, you'll know exactly which one your business needs, why you might need both, and how to implement them without adding even more confusion to your workday. Thank you for supporting the sponsors of each episode, who have short, 30-second ads. Those ads help to support the podcast. How to Embody Your Brand in Your Creative Business

As you may know, I've woked with independent authors and creative professionals for almost 20 years on their branding and marketing efforts. When most people think of their btand, they think of visuals: the logo, the font, the color scheme. And while those elements are important, they're really just the packaging. To truly embody your brand means to live and breathe the values, personality, promise you've created.

How to Use FOMO in Your Marketing

Welcome back to the Pam Speaks 2 You Creative Business Podcast. This is Season 2, Episode 7. I'm your host, Pamela Hilliard Owens, and today we're diving into one of the most powerful—and sometimes controversial—psychological triggers in modern marketing: FOMO, or Fear of Missing Out. Let's be honest. We've all felt it. That little pinch of anxiety when we see a notification that something exclusive is happening, and we might not be included. That urgency to act now or risk losing an opportunity forever. FOMO is real, it's powerful, and when used ethically, it can be a game-changer for your marketing campaigns. First, let's talk about what FOMO actually is. It's not just hype or wishful thinking—it's a genuine psychological response rooted in our fundamental need to belong and stay connected. When your audience feels they might miss something valuable, their decision-making process shifts. They become more likely to act quickly and decisively.

Finding Your Target Market as a Creative Professional

Episode Overview In this episode, host Pamela Hilliard Owens explores why identifying and understanding your target audience is crucial for creative professionals. Rather than trying to serve everyone, this episode provides a practical framework for finding, understanding, and connecting with the exact people who need what you offer. Key Topics Why Target Audience Matters (2:30) Narrowing your focus doesn't limit your business—it expands it Specificity increases marketing effectiveness, pricing confidence, and client loyalty Clients who feel you're speaking directly to them are willing to pay more and become advocates Businesses with a clear target audience have 40% higher customer retention rates Real examples: A photographer who specialized in destination weddings tripled her income; a copywriter who focused on e-commerce email sequences became a specialist and could charge premium rates Identifying Your Ideal Client (4:00) Start by analyzing past clients: Who did you enjoy working with? What did they have in common? Think about the problems you solve and the outcomes you create Find the intersection of three things: your skills, your passion, and market demand Use this 5-question test for potential target audiences: Do I have the skills to serve them well? Would I enjoy working with them? Are they actively seeking the services I offer? Can they afford to pay what I'm worth? Do they have a specific, identifiable problem I solve? Examples of specific positioning: "I design websites for female entrepreneurs in the wellness industry" or "I create custom illustrations for self-publishing children's book authors." Understanding Your Audience Deeply (3:30) Research where your audience hangs out online (social media platforms, blogs, podcasts, communities) Understand their pain points—what keeps them up at night? Understand their aspirations—what are they working toward? Gather information by: Talking directly to past clients and people in your target audience Joining online communities where they gather (Reddit, Facebook groups, LinkedIn, Discord, Slack) Reading reviews and testimonials of competitors Observing what content gets engagement in their communities Crafting Your Message (2:30) Your message should answer three key questions: Do you understand me? Can you help me? Why should I choose you? Create a positioning statement (1-2 sentences) that captures who you serve, what you do, and why it matters Use your positioning statement as a filter for all marketing decisions Consistency across all platforms builds trust and makes you memorable Reaching Your Audience (2:30) Meet them where they already are—you don't need to be everywhere Platform-specific strategies: Instagram: Post consistently, share behind-the-scenes content, engage authentically LinkedIn: Share insights, engage in conversations, write articles, build professional relationships Online communities: Participate, answer questions, provide value Content marketing: Create content that addresses their pain points and aspirations Email marketing: Build a list and provide consistent value Word-of-mouth and referrals are often the most effective marketing channels Quality over quantity: A thousand interested people are worth more than ten thousand random followers Testing and Refining (2:00) Identifying your target audience is an ongoing process, not a one-time exercise Track metrics: engagement, traffic, open rates, client satisfaction, profitability Be willing to pivot based on what you learn Every test provides valuable data—there's no such thing as failure You can serve multiple audiences, but start with one and master it first Key Takeaways Specificity is your superpower—the more specific you get about your target audience, the better Understanding your audience deeply is what separates struggling creatives from thriving ones Your target audience isn't set in stone—stay flexible and responsive to what you're learning Focus your energy where it matters most, not on trying to serve everyone When you have a clear target audience, everything becomes easier: marketing, messaging, pricing, and client relationships Challenge for Listeners This week, identify 3-5 specific types of people or businesses you could serve. For each one, answer the five qualifying questions. Pick one and go deep: research them, join their communities, talk to them, and understand their challenges and aspirations. PS2Y Podcast Todoist Empowers Solopreneurs- Streamlined Task and Project Management - November 6 2025

As a creative solopreneur since 2008, I've navigated through a sea of task management and project management tools. While many of these platforms cater to large sales teams or enterprise-level businesses, only a select few truly cater to the unique needs of solo business owners. After much trial and error, I've found my go-to: ToDoist. While it leans more towards task management than comprehensive project management, its simplicity and efficiency make it ideal for solopreneurs like myself, as well as individuals working within sales teams.

Crafting the Perfect Name for Your Creative Business

A name is more than just a label—it's the first impression, the brand identity, and often the deciding factor that determines whether potential clients take notice or move on. For creative businesses, which often rely on branding and personal connection, a name can set the tone for what potential customers can expect. It conveys the essence of your brand and can differentiate you from competitors. A memorable name can create a lasting impression, inspire curiosity, and lead to a loyal customer base.
