This summer, PennWest students and faculty aren’t just leaving campus – they’re stepping into the world. From rainforest research in Madagascar and reef studies in Thailand to creative mentorship in Japan and community advocacy closer to home, these experiences highlight learning beyond the classroom.Today’s episode celebrates bold plans, global exploration and hands-on opportunities shaping futures in science, storytelling, and public service. Each journey reflects curiosity, commitment, and real-world impact.Today's guests include:Dr. Summer Arrigo Nelson is a Professor of Biology, Earth, and Environmental Sciences at PennWest, teaching animal behavior, conservation, ecology and zoology. Her research examines how habitat disturbance shapes mammal communities in Madagascar’s rainforests, where she has led study abroad programs since 2010. Mary Kelly is a Fisheries and Wildlife Biology student at PennWest California, commuting from Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. Passionate about global wildlife conservation, she is expanding her field experience through an internship in Thailand and a study abroad program in Costa Rica.Braden McCormick is a senior Applied Media Arts major at PennWest Edinboro, concentrating in 3D Animation and graduating in Fall 2026. Mentored by industry leader and Edinboro alum Jalil Sadool of Steamroller Animation Studios, he thrives in hands on creative spaces on campus. This summer, Braden will continue his mentorship while studying abroad in Japan.Henry Miller is a Legal Studies major at PennWest Clarion from Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Recruited as a collegiate swimmer, he discovered his academic passion through meaningful engagement with faculty in the classroom. This summer, Henry will intern at the Clarion Women’s Shelter, gaining hands‑on experience that will shape his professional development and deepen his commitment to real‑world advocacy and community impact.

A campus leader and President of the National Panhellenic Council, she is deeply committed to inclusive, student‑centered teaching. Through hands‑on classroom experience and educational advocacy, Kendal is preparing to begin her career as a special education teacher who empowers every learner to succeed.Caleigh Aigler, who is a senior at PennWest Clarion majoring in Economics with a minor in Pre‑Law, recognized for academic excellence and consistent Dean’s List achievement. Today’s episode begins that celebration by honoring students whose journeys reflect the very best of PennWest.Through perseverance, leadership, service and academic purpose, they have shaped not only their own futures, but the communities around them.Today's guests include:Caitlyn Egan is a senior at PennWest California majoring in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Forensic Investigation. Deeply involved on campus, she serves in Student Government Association leadership, leads the Co-ed Volleyball Club and holds roles with the Criminal Justice Club, SAI Board and peer mentoring. Her college experience – paired with an Ocean City Police Department internship – has shaped her passion for law enforcement careers ahead.Karsten Kadylak is a senior Nursing student at PennWest Clarion from Franklin, Pennsylvania, drawn to Clarion for its close‑knit campus community. He has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA while tutoring peers in nursing and anatomy and gaining hands‑on clinical experience at UPMC Northwest in inpatient medical‑surgical and specialty units. Karsten prepares to begin his career in the medical intensive care unit at UPMC Hamot.Jordan Wiedman is also from the California campus, majoring in Criminology, with a master’s degree in Analysis of Criminal Behavior already underway. A Marine Corps Reservist and campus scholar, Jordan has maintained a 4.0 GPA while balancing military leadership, research presentation and Division II athletics. His college experience blends discipline, service and academic excellence, shaping his path toward law school and a future career in military law and public service.

PennWest recently launched a new initiative bringing together innovative economic development programs across our three Western Pennsylvania campuses. P.E.A.K. @ PennWest supports regional business growth while offering students meaningful, real-world learning experiences. Through partners like the Clarion SBDC, California’s APEX Accelerator, PennWest Edinboro’s Beehive, the Career Center, and academic programs across multiple disciplines, P.E.A.K. provides resources for local businesses and gives students hands-on experience that prepares them to lead, create and innovate.Today's guests include:Chad Smith is a Professor of Management and Marketing at PennWest, focused on entrepreneurship, strategy and leadership through hands‑on learning. He brings business to life using simulations, internships and real‑world application. An entrepreneur and investor, Chad is committed to helping students build practical skills, confidence, and career‑ready experience beyond the classroom.Chris Lantinen serves as Faculty Director of Entrepreneurship and leads the Edinboro branch of the NWPA Innovation Beehive Network. Based in the Baron‑Forness Library, he supports regional entrepreneurs with branding and marketing. A former Edinboro student‑athlete and journalist, Chris brings real‑world experience to teaching, innovation and community‑focused economic growth.Ben Kalmey is a Corporate Communications graduate student at PennWest Edinboro, building on a bachelor’s degree in Strategic Communications with a minor in Music. A deeply engaged campus leader, he serves with the Spirit of the Scots Marching Band, University Choir, WFSE Fighting Scots Radio and Kappa Kappa Psi. Ben also works as a Digital Media Specialist with the PennWest Edinboro Beehive, blending communication, creativity and community impact.Hailee Liptak is an MBA student in Finance at PennWest Clarion, building on her undergraduate degree in Finance with a concentration in Personal Financial Planning. And even in places you might not expect – like nutrition classrooms, where students test, taste, and refine food choices designed to fuel health and wellness.Today's guests include:Branden Gmutza is a dual major in Mechatronic Engineering Technology and Electrical Engineering Technology at PennWest California, driven by hands‑on innovation. As President of the Engineering Technology Club, he leads through collaboration and applied learning. His work includes industrial automation, autonomous drones and a senior design project developing a low‑power imaging system for harsh environments like Antarctica, blending engineering, research and real‑world impact.Taney Basinger is a senior at PennWest Edinboro and a double major in Animation and Film with a passion for visual storytelling. She gained hands‑on professional experience as a Digital Multimedia Intern at Fallingwater, creating photography, video and written content at the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright landmark. Inspired by art, nature and people, Taney is preparing for a creative career in film and digital media.Dr. Kim Schwabenbauer serves as an Associate Professor of Exercise Science at our Clarion campus, championing hands‑on, experiential learning that connects science to real‑world performance. Also the Sports Dietitian for the Pittsburgh Steelers, she is a nationally recognized expert and former professional triathlete dedicated to personalized, evidence‑based nutrition, applied research, and preparing students for success beyond the classroom.

Today, we have two students and one faculty member who prove that when you invest in the Earth, the future grows stronger.Today's guests include:Kennedy Brown is a senior Environmental Geosciences major with a concentration in Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences and a minor in Black Studies. From Fredericktown, Pennsylvania, she discovered a passion for meteorology through storm intercept research and hands on fieldwork. Actively involved in leadership and environmental justice initiatives at the Clarion campus, Kennedy is driven by science, community and the power of collaboration.Tyler Zuck is a senior Fisheries and Wildlife Biology major at PennWest California from Bedford, Pennsylvania. A student leader with STAND, the campus ministry, he is passionate about stewardship, service, and community. Tyler’s love for the outdoors – hunting, fishing, birding, hiking, camping, and exploring historical sites – shapes his commitment to conservation and meaningful engagement with the natural world.Dr. Sarah L. Bashore is a faculty member at PennWest California whose work centers on sustainability, plant–microbe interactions and food security. Trained in microbiology and plant sciences, she bridges research and practice through teaching, community engagement and stewardship of the university’s organic garden, orchard and apiary. Today's guests include:Liz Keppler is a dual major in Graphic Design and Illustration at PennWest Edinboro, passionate about creative storytelling and visual communication. Originally from Waterford, Pennsylvania, she performs trombone with the Spirit of the Scots Marching Band and is an active member of Kappa Kappa Psi’s Nu Zeta chapter. Liz loves contributing to campus life through both the arts and meaningful service.Tsahai Senior graduated from PennWest with a degree in Psychology in December 2025. During her time on campus, she served as an officer in New Life Christian Club and sang in the University Choir throughout her college career. Now pursuing graduate studies, Tsahai is passionate about trauma informed developmental care, combining clinical intervention and research to support healing and resilience.Selamawit Yilma is a Molecular Biology and Computer Science double major from Ethiopia, dedicated to academic excellence and global engagement. At PennWest Clarion, she serves as a peer tutor and leads across campus as President of Model United Nations and the Black Student Union, Vice President of the Clarion International Student Association, and Treasurer of the Association of Information Technology Professionals.Dr. Michelle Valkanas is an Assistant Professor of Biology, Earth, and Environmental Sciences who earned her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Duquesne University, specializing in bacterial genetics and bioremediation. Her research explores bacterial adaptations in extreme environments, including metal and antibiotic resistance. A Pittsburgh native, she is deeply committed to community science outreach and active in several national scientific organizations.

Today's guests include:Madeline Loring, the 2026 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year, is a fourth grade math teacher at Jefferson-Morgan Elementary School. With 14 years in public education and a master’s degree from the California campus, she designs intentional, engaging instruction that honors every child’s potential. Mark Brooks is a proud Erie native and Harbor Creek graduate who earned his health and physical education teaching certification from Edinboro, where he briefly played football before moving into coaching. He has taught every grade K–12 and now serves as an online educator with Pennwood Cyber Charter School.Brandy Daye is a passionate educator and leader committed to equity, opportunity, and transformative learning. A Clarion University graduate with certifications in Elementary and Special Education, she later earned her Master’s in Educational Leadership. Kendal Mumaw is a senior at PennWest Edinboro pursuing dual certification in 7–12 Social Studies and PK–12 Special Education. Originally from Monaca, Pennsylvania, she has led within Zeta Tau Alpha and the Edinboro Panhellenic Council. Zion Baxter is a junior at PennWest California and a proud member of Sigma Tau Gamma. He serves as Vice President on the IFC Executive Board, helping support and strengthen the fraternity community. Today's guests include:Max Moran is a Biology major on the Pre‑Medicine track with a Chemistry minor at PennWest. At Edinboro’s campus, Max is deeply involved – as a CA, Highland Ambassadors secretary, Circle K vice president, CHAOS vice president and treasurer, PLA member and honors mentor. Jenna Ciora is a Marketing major and management minor at PennWest California, currently a second‑semester junior from South Park, PA. She serves as Daytime Chair for the Student Activities Board, Team Lead in the PennWest Leadership Academy and Lieutenant Speaker of the House of Representatives.James O’Dell is a Sport Management major and member of the PennWest Honors Program at PennWest Clarion. Originally from Oil City, PA, he serves as Head Manager for the Men’s Basketball team and Team Leader for the PennWest Leadership Academy.

Love Takes Root: PennWest Couples Who Started With Us
For this Valentine’s Day edition, we’re sharing the stories of two PennWest couples – four employees whose journeys with each other began through their journeys with us.Whether they met as students navigating late‑night study sessions, or as professionals working side‑by‑side to support our university’s mission, each couple reminds us that PennWest isn’t just a place to learn and work – it’s also a place where lives intertwine, friendships deepen and sometimes, yes — love takes root.Today's guests include:The first couple on today’s episode calls the Clarion campus home. Heath Calhoun and Sarah Zerfoss-Calhoun met as Clarion students but didn’t connect as romantic partners until 2018 – getting married in 2022 and welcoming their son, Finley in May 2023.Sarah Zerfoss-Calhoun, Assistant Dean of Students and Assistant Director of Student Development, leads conduct processes and coordinates leadership programs across PennWest. Heath Calhoun, a six-time All-American and 2014 NCAA champion diver at Clarion, is now the Golden Eagles’ diving coach. Entering his fifth season, he’s guided athletes to national titles and All-America honors. He’s built stellar coaching after succeeding longtime coach Dave Hrovat.Over to the California campus, where we meet the Dunn family. Gary and Missy's story began in their final semester of graduate school, having their first date in the Vulcan Theater in Natali Student Center. They married in California, PA in 2001 having their wedding reception in the Performance Center in Natali. The couple has a daughter, Sydney, who is 17.Gary Dunn, a former four-year starter for the Vulcans, serves as the California head football coach.Missy Dunn, Director of Student Development, leads PennWest’s New Student Orientation, Welcome Weekend, and key leadership programs while supporting student groups across campus.

Speech-language pathologists play a vital role in helping individuals communicate, learn, and thrive – making the field essential in healthcare and education. PennWest’s innovative online Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program expands access to this impactful profession through a flexible curriculum, simulation‑based training, and an immersive on‑campus intensive. Today, we welcome faculty and students who share how this program is transforming opportunities for rural and working professionals.Today's guests include:Kristen West is an Assistant Professor, Assistant Chair, and Director of the Online MSSLP Program at PennWest University. She specializes in pediatric dysphagia, feeding disorders, medical speech pathology and early intervention.April Wright is a Speech-Language Pathologist and assistant professor at PennWest. With a decade of clinical experience in adult neurogenic care, she specializes in communication, voice and swallowing.Melissa Kruse is a Los Angeles-based SLP student and founder of Bandit Filmworks. A storyteller at heart, she was drawn to speech-language pathology to help people reclaim their voices and share their stories.Mudita Belani is a Developmental and Therapeutic Play Specialist, Early Childhood educator, and Speech-Language Pathology graduate student with 18 years of global experience. Based in Arizona, she supports families through early intervention and SLP services while advancing her clinical training.

Today, we spotlight the newly launched PennWest CORE — the Office of Community, Opportunity, Responsibility, and Engagement. CORE leads initiatives that promote dignity, belonging, leadership development, and community engagement across our campuses. We’re joined by two students and two faculty members who are helping bring CORE’s mission to life. They’ll share how this new office is shaping student success, strengthening connections, and building a more inclusive PennWest community. Sade Taylor is a sophomore at PennWest Edinboro from Vandergrift, PA, majoring in Early Childhood & Elementary Education and adding a CSCD minor. Sade is known for her empathy, authenticity, and commitment to creating inclusive, uplifting spaces for every student she encounters. Jordyn Reynolds, from Philadelphia, is a Middle Level Education major at our California campus, with minors in Special Education and Psychology. She serves as President of the Black Student Union. Jordyn is dedicated to creating inclusive, connected campus spaces.Dr. Michelle Early Torregano is a PennWest professor of Education and director of the Frederick Douglass Institute. Dr. Torregano researches multicultural education, academic freedom, and policies impacting underrepresented students. A social justice advocate, she teaches in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and serves on key university committees. A New Orleans native, she loves cooking, jazz, and celebrating southern culture as a proud mother of two. Dr. Joseph Croskey is a West Point graduate, Army veteran and former Ranger who served six years, including in Desert Storm. He earned his Ph.D. from IUP researching mindfulness and now directs the Act 101 Flourish Program at Clarion and Edinboro. A leadership and well‑being educator who teaches globally – including through the UN’s Peace on Purpose program – Dr. Croskey is a dedicated advocate for human flourishing.

Welcome back to The Power of PennWest – we are excited to begin the fourth season of the podcast. This year, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference will celebrate its 75th anniversary, highlighting the conference’s proud history. The conference will honor 300 influential contributors who shaped the legacy of athletics in Pennsylvania. Among them are standout PennWest student athlete alumni whose achievements, leadership and impact across generations continue to elevate the conference’s reputation. Their inclusion highlights PennWest’s enduring tradition of excellence within the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Today's guests include:Trevor Harris, a 4-time All-PSAC Edinboro quarterback, has built an impressive professional career in the Canadian Football League, becoming one of its most consistent and respected passers. Known for his leadership, accuracy, and longevity, Harris continues to elevate every team he joins. His journey reflects Edinboro’s tradition of developing disciplined, high-achieving student‑athletes who excel beyond campus. Divonne Franklin is a decorated alumna of our California campus and one of Division II’s most accomplished sprinters. A two‑time NCAA national champion and Division II record‑holder in the 100m, she earned numerous All‑America and PSAC honors before joining Haverford College as an assistant coach. Franklin brings elite competitive experience, academic excellence and a passion for mentorship to the track. Wade Schalles, one of wrestling’s most inventive and accomplished competitors, carved his legendary career at Clarion, where he captured multiple NCAA titles and redefined the art of the pin. A record‑setting athlete, coach, clinician, and Hall of Famer, Wade’s unmatched influence and relentless creativity continue to shape the sport and inspire generations of wrestlers.

Two members of PennWest’s administration also join to discuss how enrollment management impacts the entire college experience.We’ll dive into what enrollment really means today – access, equity, student success and completion – and how expanding pathways through dual enrollment, transfer partnerships and pipelines in nursing and education have led and will lead to outstanding outcomes.Today’s guests include:Darren Wagner joins PennWest as Vice President for Strategic Enrollment Management, bringing 20+ years of experience in higher education and the private sector. At Rowan University, he drove record enrollment and global partnerships through bold, data-driven strategies.Dr. Jim Fisher serves as PennWest’s Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. With over 20 years as a professor of politics and legal studies at Edinboro, he’s held leadership roles including department chair, associate provost, and interim dean.Dr. Susanne Fenske serves as PennWest’s Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness and Student Affairs. Beyond the Podium: Stories from PennWest’s Commencement Speakers
Today’s conversation is one I’ve been looking forward to all semester. Commencement is such a special time – it’s a celebration of hard work, resilience, and the incredible journeys our students have taken to reach this milestone.In this episode, I have the privilege of sitting down with the three commencement speakers from each of our campuses. These individuals represent the very best of PennWest.Today's guests include:Alexis Steenburg graduates with a Criminal Justice degree and an associate in engineering technology. A Coal Township native, she’s been a dynamic leader at PennWest California – serving in student government, Greek life and honors programs. Her involvement spans leadership academies, national conferences and campus initiatives.Zachary Troese, a Psychology major and lifelong Clarion resident, has been a campus leader through the University Activities Board, serving as President and PR Chair. Zach also sang in the choir and served on Homecoming Court. His next chapter: pursuing a master’s in School Counseling to guide future generations.Bob Moats, a Health and Physical Education major from Cambridge Springs, found his passion through campus recreation. From working at the rock wall to leading intramurals, Bob became a cornerstone of student life, even serving as Student Government Secretary. Today's guests include:Lauren Bryant is a senior at PennWest California from Beaver Falls, PA. She’s completed internships at WTAE-TV Pittsburgh, FOX Weather in New York, and is currently interning at WTOV-TV in Steubenville. Lauren has also job-shadowed at KDKA-TV and the National Weather Service. Lanie Franklin, a dual animation and illustration major at PennWest Edinboro, gained hands-on experience through a summer internship with ARTS Oil City. She contributed to signage design and launched the Artist Spotlight series, deepening her connection to the local arts scene.Kyle Bennett is an international student from Trinidad and Tobago studying Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering at PennWest California, with minors in Marketing and Graphic Design. A black belt in Karate, he founded and leads the PennWest Martial Arts Club. Josh Domitrovich, a Western PA native and six-year USAF Pennsylvania Air National Guard veteran, holds degrees in HR management and an MBA from Clarion, plus a Doctor of Education from IUP focused on gamification and engagement. A NACE-certified career coach, he’s presented nationally and published with NACE.

A former quantitative tutor and undergraduate researcher, he explored climate change’s impact on aviation and contributed to grant-funded labor studies. Donna Jean “DJ” Thomas is a first-generation college student-athlete from Smithfield, Pennsylvania. A standout in volleyball and track at Albert Gallatin High School, she now competes in track and field at PennWest while majoring in Early Childhood Education PreK–4 with a minor in Special Education.Renee Turner, a proud first-generation college graduate from Brownsville, PA, earned both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education from PennWest. Inspired by her sister and supported by the TRIO Upward Bound program, Renee turned determination into achievement. Eron McMillen is an Instructor and Advisor with TRIO Student Support Services/Act 101 at PennWest California, dedicated to empowering first-generation and low-income students to achieve academic success. With over eight years in Student Services and a passion for student development, Eron brings experience from TRIO Upward Bound, guiding students across Southwestern Pennsylvania.

In this episode, we’re proud to spotlight three extraordinary members of the PennWest family whose journeys reflect the deep connection between service and scholarship.Their stories are powerful reminders that service doesn’t end when the uniform comes off — it continues in classrooms, communities, and careers.Let’s meet our guests!Dr. Mary Kreis, a Sport Management and Exercise Science professor at PennWest for 21 years, served in the U.S. Army, earning Airborne Parachutist and Air Assault badges. A Master Fitness Trainer School graduate, she competed internationally on the U.S. Armed Forces Military Pentathlon Team. Her final assignment was as a Medical Service Corps training officer in a Combat Support Hospital in Coraopolis, PA.Timothy John is a Biology Pre-med student at PennWest Clarion, serving as a hospital corpsman in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He completed boot camp at Naval Station Great Lakes and corpsman training at Fort Sam Houston. A certified phlebotomist and Basic Life Support provider, he’s also PennWest Clarion’s student trustee and an undergraduate researcher, balancing military service with academic excellence and leadership.Jake Stahl, a senior at PennWest Edinboro, majors in Business Administration with minors in Communications and Adaptive Leadership. A dedicated cadet in the Edinboro Army ROTC since freshman year, Jake exemplifies resilience and discipline. He proudly completed the grueling 26.2-mile challenge of the 36th Bataan Memorial Death March, honoring fallen heroes and demonstrating his commitment to service and leadership.

His research explores transformation, identity and narrative power across genres.Dr. Mark Aune is a professor of English at PennWest California whose research spans Shakespeare, British literature, film and cultural studies. A lifelong horror film fanatic, he has brought monsters to life in his monster movies course for the Honors program. Kaylee Kennedy is a sophomore at PennWest Edinboro majoring in Secondary Education with a concentration in English. She’s passionate about campus engagement – recently planning Halloween enrichment activities to bring students together through fun and learning.

Now pursuing a degree in Sociology/Social Deviance, Curtis is passionate about creating meaningful change. Alison Jones is a junior at PennWest Edinboro majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Event Planning and Management. Deeply engaged in campus life, she’s active in Greek Life, Cheerleading, and the PennWest Leadership Academy. Anthony Guercio, a redshirt senior quarterback from North Olmsted, Ohio, transferred from Fairmont State to Clarion, where he quickly became a standout for the Golden Eagles. In 2024, he earned CSC Academic All-District honors and led Clarion with 2,001 passing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. Delainey Barr is a sophomore at PennWest Clarion from the small town of Brookville, Pennsylvania, studying speech-language pathology. Passionate about helping others communicate, she’s actively involved in campus life.

Let’s meet today’s guests: Ewing Moussa, Director of Development at Washington Latin Schools in D.C., blends his love for education, athletics and community. A proud 2017 graduate of Clarion, he played and coached men’s basketball, shaping his leadership journey. Rachel Saul Rearick is a creative powerhouse whose journey blends artistic mastery with visionary leadership. After earning her BFA in Printmaking and Art History from Edinboro, Rachel went on to shape the arts landscape across Pennsylvania – from a printmaking residency at Wilson College to leading Contemporary Craft as Executive Director. Robert Powell, who graduated with a Master of Education from the California campus in 2015, is an experienced Administrator with a demonstrated history of improving culture in the education industry. He currently serves as principal of Propel Northside in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Lauren Sims, a native of Fredericktown, PA, is a criminal justice major at PennWest California, concentrating in cyber forensics and forensic investigation, with a minor in computer information systems. Chris Crafford is an international student from Cape Town, South Africa, who began his PennWest journey in 2019. Graduating cum laude in Criminal Justice with a focus in cyber forensics, Chris served as a Community Assistant and Tour Guide. Mike Conley is the Chief Information Security Officer for Industrial Scientific in Pittsburgh and Intelex Technologies in Toronto – both part of Fortive Corporation. Named 2023 Pittsburgh CISO of the Year, Mike’s journey began at PennWest California, where he earned his degree in Applied Computer Science.Dax Kress is a senior at PennWest California majoring in Computer Information Systems. Dax recently interned at Industrial Scientific as an Information Security Intern and is pursuing a career in database analysis and cybersecurity.

He teaches the dual enrollment course “AI for Everyone.” Dr. Karen Wise Lindeman is a Professor in the Education Department at PennWest, specializing in early childhood and elementary education. She created Edinboro’s undergraduate Deaf Education program and teaches the Dual Enrollment course ASL & Deaf Culture. Camryn Humes, a first-year Speech-Language Pathology major from Erie, Pennsylvania, began college early through dual enrollment. Her passion for neonatal speech-language pathology fuels her academic journey. Addison Gregory, from California, Pennsylvania, graduated high school in May 2025 with 38 college credits and entered Pennsylvania Western University as a first-semester sophomore. She’s majoring in biology with a concentration in pre-dental studies and a minor in honors.

It’s time to meet our May 2025 Commencement Speakers. Being a leader means inspiring and guiding others towards achieving their goals, fostering a sense of unity and purpose. As commencement speakers, these individuals motivate graduates to embrace their potential, encouraging them to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world. First, we’ll chat with Cassidy McCormick, an Early Childhood Education major from our California campus. Cassidy has held multiple leadership roles at PennWest, including president of Alpha Lambda Delta. She aspires to become an elementary teacher, contributing to her community with dedication and passion. To our Clarion campus with Joe Feiser, a psychology major who excelled academically and athletically at PennWest Clarion. Joe was a dean's list recipient, scholar athlete and active in various clubs. He plans to pursue a master’s in clinical mental health counseling. Our other Golden Eagle is Gage Gray. At PennWest, Gage has been deeply engaged in campus life, serving as Student Government President. Passionate about higher education, he will pursue a master’s in counseling, aiming to contribute to student affairs. Garrett Hannah, the Student Government President at PennWest Edinboro, also joins us on the podcast. Garrett is an Economics major with minors in Political Science and General Business. He considers himself a Swiss Army Knife, holding two cabinet positions and 2 ex-officio positions in just five semesters. Also, from Edinboro, we have Sonia Yost, who’s graduating Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in English. While at PennWest, she served as Student Trustee and was active in various organizations, such as Highland Ambassadors. She will pursue a master’s in student affairs in higher education. Finally, we have Chloe McMullen, who is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in middle-level education. Also a member of Highland Ambassadors, Chloe served as co-president and was also a team leader for the President’s Leadership Academy. She aims to inspire future generations as an educator.

Beyond the Books: Walking the Walk at PennWest
At PennWest, we believe in walking the walk, not just talking the talk. We’re exploring the transformative journey of college life through the lens of experiential learning and internships. Our students and faculty members don't just sit in classrooms; they actively engage in real-world experiences that shape their futures. Today, our guests talk about their experiences outside the classroom and how those experiences have opened doors, built confidence, and paved the way for successful careers. First, to the golf course – as we examine PennWest’s professional golf management program and the hands-on work with the PGA and golf experts. We’ll tee off the chat with Justin Barroner, the department char of Exercise, Health and Sport Sciences and a PGA golf professional. Barroner not only teaches about the fitness and exercise of the sport, but also how to operate a golf course from the grass to the concession stand. He’s led many experiential trips – most recently to the U.S. Masters Golf Tournament. Shawn Luce is a senior in the Professional Golf Management Program, who has worked at the Masters tournament for the last two years. While studying at PennWest, Shawn has worked in merchandise and supervisory toles at golf courses along the east coast. Next, we’ll explore the field of nutrition with Dr. Kim Schwabenbauer – an exercise science professor at the Clarion campus – who has served as the Sports Dietitian for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Not only does she remain active in her field, completing marathons, triathlons and Ironman events, but she also connects her students with valuable, life-changing internships. Finally, we shift to the world of Economics with PennWest students Diletta Mungo and Wayeera Robertson. The pair recently earned an opportunity to share their Applied Economics research at the Federal Reserve Bank in Cleveland, Ohio. Mungo, a junior economics major and member of the PennWest California tennis team, investigates the relationship between female leadership and company performance. As an interdisciplinary studies major with an Economics minor, Robertson explores the critical issue of residential electricity rates in the United States, examining the effect of private ownership and deregulation.

Empowering Student Potential at PennWest
Today we’re exploring the support systems, resources and essential services that make a significant impact on student success and well-being. Our five guests take us inside campus accessibility, academic support, art therapy and mindfulness – so we’ll have something for everyone on the podcast. First, we have two assistant professors in our Psychology, Counseling and Art Therapy Department. Dr. Michael Baranski serves as the faculty advisor to the Mindfulness and Meditation Club. Michael’s research explores the cognitive effects of mindfulness meditation, specifically if mindfulness practice can improve working memory, executive functions, and learning and memory. And Dr. Carolyn Treadon, a registered and board-certified art therapist. With experience in psychology, painting and expressive therapy, Carolyn has provided services in alternative schools and outpatient settings. Her research covers the use of museums in the therapeutic process and using art therapy to alter perceptions and attitudes toward individuals with disabilities. Next, we have Gavin Mitsdarfer a third-year secondary education English and special education student at the Edinboro campus. Gavin is extremely involved in campus activities, such as the PennWest Honors Program and the local PSEA branch. He was awarded PASSHE’s Keeper of the Flame in 2024. Andrea Vergnaud is a graduate assistant for PennWest’s Supplemental Instruction program and is studying for a master’s in special education. As a student familiar with neurodivergence, Andrea has become a beacon for students and has engaged in studying the impacts of autism. Finally, we have Cece Blasdell, a first-year student studying Communication Sciences and Disorders at our Clarion campus. As soon as Cece stepped foot on campus this past fall, she renewed her dedication to being an advocate for student success.

Reuniting Champions of PennWest Athletics
We’re getting the team back together on “The Power of PennWest” podcast, as we welcome back three outstanding student-athlete alumni who have forged their own successful careers beyond the California, Clarion and Edinboro.College athletics often involves overcoming challenges, dealing with setbacks and pushing through difficult times. These experiences build resilience and perseverance, qualities that are valuable in any career. Today’s three guests exemplify these qualities.Kristin Day Shute is one of the most accomplished women’s student-athletes in Clarion sports history. She was an eight time All-American and three-time NCAA champion diver and was named the 2015 NCAA Woman of the Year – the first from any Pennsylvania-based university. Following graduation, Kristin earned her Doctor of Osteopathy and is employed in the Penn State Health Network.Next, we have Mikaylah "Miki" Glenn, a three-time NCAA Division II All-American and a national championship point guard from our California campus. As a sophomore in 2015, Miki scored 31 points to lead the Vulcans to the NCAA Division II Championship. After graduating from California with 2,007 career points, Glenn joined the Fairmont State women’s basketball coaching staff in 2019.Finally, we have Dr. Korey Kilburn, a former Edinboro wrester and current PennWest mathematics professor – who also coordinates the associate degree in Aeronautical Sciences program. His performance as a student-athlete landed him on the Edinboro Wrestling All-Time Roster. Today, Dr. Kilburn teaches a variety of courses including applied mathematics, probability, statistics, actuarial science, finance and operations research.

In the month of April, we celebrate Earth Day. And on the “Power of PennWest” podcast, we're diving into the wonders of our planet by exploring the great outdoors through the lenses of geology, science, and parks and recreation. We’ll uncover the fascinating stories behind the rocks beneath our feet, the science that helps us understand our environment, and the parks that offer us a chance to connect with nature.Our guests today share their outdoor learning and adventures and highlight the importance of preserving our natural world.First up is Dr. Candice Riley, who teaches management, parks and recreation management and event planning management at the California campus. Dr. Riley believes that parks and leisure are essential components of our overall well-being and encourages students to examine the role parks play in communities. Dr. Kyle Fredrick is a professor of Geology at PennWest and the president of the Pittsburgh Geological Society. He teaches a wide variety of courses, primarily related to Hydrology, Water Resources and Environmental Geology, and leads an annual field course to points of geologic interest in the US.Next is Aaron Barnes, a geology and earth science student at our PennWest Edinboro campus. In addition to his studies in geo-physics, environmental geology and minerology, Aaron has also presented at several local and regional conferences.Finally, we have Jesse Lewis, an environmental biology major at the Clarion campus. Jesse serves as the president of the local chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology. While outdoors, Jesse enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, hiking and learning about wildlife management and conservation.

Today, we dive into the vibrant world of music and theatre.We’ll explore the creative journeys of our talented students, faculty and alumni, who bring the campus to life with their performances and productions. From captivating musicals and thought-provoking plays to innovative music technology, we celebrate the arts in all their forms. Our three guests today will show how they discovered their artistic path and harness the power of artistic expression.Matt Poirier, a 2014 PennWest commercial music technology graduate, earned a Grammy for his engineering on "Rectangles and Circumstance" by Caroline Shaw and Sō Percussion. His journey, marked by dedication and persistence, led him from Miner Street Recordings to freelance work across multiple studios, including classical recordings at Princeton.Next, we have Dr. J.P. Staszel, an associate professor at PennWest, where he directs departmental productions and teaches theatre history, dramatic literature, acting and communication. JP has trained with several renowned theatre companies and artists including Pilobolus, Inlet Dance Theatre and the North American Cultural Laboratory.Finally, we have M.J. Jerdan, a sophomore animation major from our Edinboro campus. M.J. has been involved in theatre since age 7, performing in 26 shows, including Radium Girls, Peter and the Starcatcher and Mamma Mia. M.J. has also directed, designed costumes and led workshops.

Traveling Abroad with PennWest Globetrotters
Buckle up, because we are hitting the road for this episode of “The Power of PennWest” podcast. We are taking a trip with PennWest students and faculty as we explore the unique opportunities of studying abroad.Traveling abroad and learning about other cultures allows PennWest students and faculty to gain a global perspective, enhance their academic experience and develop cultural awareness and adaptability.Our three guests today have participated in short and long-term trips to other countries to expand their research horizons, foster international collaboration and become more well-rounded.Dr. Melissa Gibson, professor and graduate head of PennWest’s master’s program in corporate communication, has led trips abroad to European countries such as Spain, Italy and Greece. She’ll discuss her travels and how she incorporates teaching experiences to her exploration.Next, we have Allison Dobrinski, who studies history, pre-law, theater history and literature at the California campus. She was one of 23 PennWest students to travel to Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway to discover the rich, cultural history of Scandinavia.And finally, we have Mattie Carey, an art education major and honors student at the Edinboro campus. To fully immerse herself in her academic program, Mattie spent a semester in Greece – studying the art, architecture and history of the region.

Exploring STEM: From Streams to Solutions
Today is all about STEM, as we dig into the world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEM encompasses a range of academic disciplines and careers focused on understanding the natural world, developing new technologies and solving complex problems.Our guests are part of the exciting field that fosters critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills, essential for addressing global challenges – and drives innovation and economic growth.First, we have Dr. Andy Turner, a professor of biology, earth and environmental science at the PennWest Clarion campus. He has been conducting field research on northwestern Pennsylvania’s lakes and streams for 25 years and has long been involved in the restoration of local streams that were destroyed by acid mine drainage.Dr. Kimberly Woznack is a distinguished professor in the chemistry and physics department at PennWest California. She is a passionate advocate for women in STEM, currently serving as the chair of the American Chemical Society’s Women Chemists Committee. In addition to her academic and advocacy roles, Dr. Woznack is a mother of two and has shared her experiences in the book “Mom the Chemistry Professor.” Her work highlights the challenges and rewards of balancing motherhood with an academic career in chemistryFinally, we have Morgan Wissner, who is majoring in actuarial science and mathematics at the Edinboro campus. During her time at Edinboro, she’s excelled in the classroom and on the soccer field – earning PSAC West Player of the Week in her freshman season. She eventually joined the coaching staff as a student-assistant where she earned the Senior Leadership Award. After she passed her first actuarial science exam, she plans to join a financial solutions firm as an actuary.

Navigating Your Path to Discovery at PennWest
Today, we're embarking on a journey of discovery at PennWest. College is more than just attending classes and earning a degree. It's also about discovering who you are and what you're passionate about. And finding a career path that aligns with your personality and strengths. Sometimes, this requires a bit of exploration, and today’s guests share their experience navigating their journeys.We have three guests at different levels of their careers – a student, a staff member and an alumnus – who are excited to share their academic story.Emily Campbell is a junior at PennWest Edinboro, majoring in political science with minors in data analytics and Spanish. Passionate about women's health, she interned at the Institute for Women’s Health in Washington, D.C., where she conducted research and developed resources to improve women's health outcomes. Her dedication earned her an award from the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Employers. Darrek Harshberger, a two-time PennWest California graduate, is the Assistant Director of Student Development and Engagement. He switched from studying math – intending to teach – to communications, eventually earning a master’s in corporate communications. He’s incredibly involved on campus, leading efforts for New Student Orientation, Homecoming, Student Activities Boards and more. Finally, we have Justin Leader, who started college at the California campus with the goal of becoming a high school history teacher and athletic trainer. But his path took him to the world of biology, where he began studying in the Pre-Med curriculum. Today, we’re diving into the dynamic experiences that make our university life unforgettable. In today's episode, we're exploring the adventurous world of campus recreation. Imagine soaring through the sky with skydiving, gliding gracefully on ice skates, or trekking through scenic hiking trails. These activities are more than just fun—they're opportunities for students to embrace new challenges. We'll be joined by some incredible guests from our PennWest campuses, who have taken the plunge—literally and figuratively—into these exhilarating activities. We’ll chat with Edinboro students Bridget Bartlett and Sonia Yost, California students Gage Sorchilla and Aaron Lasinsky – and Campus Recreations staff members Ryan Walton and Hayden Thorpe, who will share their personal stories of how campus recreation transforms the college experience. At PennWest, we believe that stepping out of your comfort zone is a crucial part of personal growth. Our guests will talk about how these experiences have not only boosted their college life but also created lasting memories and friendships.

From Campus Crushes to Lifelong Partnerships
Love is in the air, as we explore the magic of college romance, and the lasting bonds formed at PennWest. Today we have two heartwarming stories from our alumni who found love during their high school and college years together – and one story about a married couple that serves as athletic coaches. We’ll dive into the unique journeys of couples whose relationships blossomed amidst the vibrant campus life – sharing their experiences, challenges, and the moments that brought them closer together. We begin at the California campus with Camus family. Tim, who graduated in 1984, and Judy, who followed in 1985, met as students during their college careers. Tim recently retired as the Deputy Inspector for Investigations at the office of the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. He currently serves as vice president of California’s alumni association. Since graduation, Judy has served in several roles, including a PR director, communications specialist and patient care representative. She earned a degree from California in speech communication. Next, we have Danielle and Daron Fleming, who coach the Clarion women’s basketball team. Danielle Fleming was hired as the head coach of the Golden Eagles' women's basketball program in Spring 2023 after a steady career of assistant and head coaching gigs. As the assistant coach, Daron has worked alongside Danielle at stints in Columbia International and Southern Arkansas. We’ll discuss what it’s like working alongside your spouse while coaching and leading student-athletes to success on and off the court. Finally, we end in Edinboro with Jason and Katie Spangenberg. Jason Spangenberg graduated in 2014 is manager of the Edinboro Borough Manager. He earned his Bachelor of Science in business administration with a minor in accounting. A 2016 grad, Katie is owner and operator of Bean & Bear Café and has served as event director for the Edinboro Highland Games & Scottish Festival. She earned her Bachelor of Science in business administration with a minor in comprehensive business . The pair remains very involved in the Edinboro community and assist with the marching band at nearby General McLane High School, where they met.

This month, we're honoring Black History Month with a special episode that explores the personal and professional journeys of three remarkable individuals at PennWest. We’ll dig into the meaning of Black History Month through the lenses of our Frederick Douglass Institute director, one of our basketball coaches and a current graduate student – each of whom will examine their inspiring stories, challenges they've overcome and the legacies they're building. Today we welcome Dr. Michelle Torregano, who was recently selected to lead PennWest’s efforts in the Frederick Douglass Institute; Damian Pitts, the head coach of Clarion’s men’s basketball team, and graduate student Bria Allen, who’s an outstanding photographer and MBA student.

Through their commitment to service, they address pressing social issues, provide valuable support to those in need, and also foster a sense of civic responsibility and community engagement among participants.Today on the podcast, we have three individuals who oversee and participate in these initiatives that build stronger, more resilient communities – and provide students with invaluable real-world experience and personal growth.Dr. Amy Eperthener is an athletic trainer at Edinboro and also leads the campus Make-a-Wish efforts.Leah Chambers, who joins us from Clarion, operates the Community Learning Workshop with Dr. Richard Lane. Empowering PennWest Students with a Culture of Advocacy
PennWest faculty members are renowned for fostering a culture of exploration and engagement on our campuses, which significantly contributes to student success both during and after college. They actively encourage students to participate in diverse academic and extracurricular activities, promoting a well-rounded educational experience. Today on the podcast, we have three PennWest faculty members whose supportive environment not only enhances achievement and prepares students for successful careers and meaningful contributions to their communities. Dr. Karim Hossain, who teaches physics at the Edinboro campus, is always exploring and presenting effective ways of instructional techniques after realizing that students in physics courses exhibited an anxiety that limited their motivation to learn. As a professor of sociology at the California campus, Dr. Codie Stone promotes diversity and social inclusion in the classroom and emphasizes real-world experiences and authentic histories in course content. Dr. Brandon Packard, whose academic interests span from video games to artificial intelligence, was recently recognized with a Special Equity Award for creating a welcoming environment where all students can thrive and feel safe.

Crafting Identities: The Impact of Clubs and Organizations at PennWest
Today we have two individuals who have crafted their own personal narratives and identities through participation in clubs and organizations while in college. Lindsey Tolbert, who graduated from the California campus in 2016, works for an entertainment company as an event coordinator and talent agent. Where did she get her start? Collaborating with the company as a member of the Student Activities Board.Joelle Paul, an exercise science major at the Edinboro campus, finds her passion in basketball. As the student assistant for the Fighting Scots women’s team, she discovered that she still had the itch to lace up her sneakers. So, she decided to start a club basketball team on her owncampus.Clubs and organizations play a crucial role in the college experience by providing opportunities for personal growth, leadership development and networking. Investiture Insights: President Anderson's Inaugural Address (Bonus Episode)
Dr. Jonathan Anderson was inaugurated as the second president of Pennsylvania Western University on Friday, Dec. 6, 2024, in Steele Hall on the PennWest California campus. The investiture marks a pivotal moment for PennWest as it continues to build upon its mission of providing a life-changing educational experience for students on its campuses at California, Clarion, Edinboro and online and serving the communities of western Pennsylvania. In today's bonus episode, we present President Anderson's inauguration speech in its entirety. “Caring for our individual stewardship may be the best way we can respect this institution’s history and build the PennWest legacy.”

Reflections from the Andersons
The Power of PennWest is in its people, and through the first 15 episodes of this podcast, we’ve met faculty, staff, students and community members who epitomize the spirit of this institution and work tirelessly towards the collective success of our campuses. Over the past semester, we have achieved major gains in recruiting online and graduate students, established a center for Artificial Intelligence and reinforced our dedication to education through our partnership with the Rutledge Institute. We’ve also connected with school districts, business leaders and organizations in our own backyard to strengthen our commitment to our regions and communities. I’m excited today to be joined by my wife, Kristy, for the final fall episode of The Power of PennWest podcast. We will look back on our first few months of involvement in this institution, our outstanding inauguration celebration and our goals and initiatives moving forward.

Class of 2024: Voices of Strength and Vision
Commencement is an exciting time for the entire PennWest community – as it marks one of the final stages in a student’s academic journey and also the beginning of the future. On Dec. 14, we will celebrate the Class of 2024 with celebrations at each of our campuses of California, Clarion and Edinboro. The power of PennWest is in its people and the three guests on the show today have epitomized the strength, determination and vision it takes to be successful at this level. Rachel Kister, from Clarion, Courtney Keisling, from California, and Ellie Keating, representing Edinboro, have been selected by their campus communities to deliver the student addresses for the PennWest commencement ceremonies. In today’s episode, each student will preview their message to campus and share a little insight into their journey at PennWest.

Gateway to the Universe: Exploring PennWest Planetariums
Whether you want to stargaze, journey to distant galaxies or explore the solar system, you’ll find the PennWest planetariums to be the gateway to the universe. The Edinboro Planetarium and the Pierce Planetarium at the Clarion campus offer dynamic, hands-on educational experiences where students and stargazers can learn about stars, planets and constellations. Two professors who serve as directors of the PennWest Planetariums join us today on “The Power of PennWest” podcast to discuss their upcoming shows and the importance of scientific curiosity on our campuses. This December at Edinboro, Dr. David Hurd, will guide the public through the annual holiday show, where guests can learn about the winter sky, the traditional Christmas holiday and – of course – Santa’s global travels. At Clarion, Dr. Sharon Montgomery leads an exploration into the sky over Clarion – where she weaves storytelling and science together to explore to highlight the month’s brightest stars and planets.

Modern philanthropy involves individuals and organizations donating their time, money and resources to support charitable causes and improve the well-being of others.
