Countering Hate with the Power of Non-Violence
Send us Fan MailImagine a world where the strongest force isn't violence, but Peace. Dr. Reverend Vonnetta West is a force. Her work is reshaping hate and conflict with the power of Kingian Non-Violence. As a Senior Trainer at The King Center in Atlanta, a Consultant training us to work for justice in our workplace or in Liberia in the school she founded to positively impact youth. She joins us to illuminate the transformative power of Kingian nonviolence, a force that remains as potent today as it did during the civil rights movement. Dr. West challenges us to break free from the norm, daring us to become "creatively maladjusted" and "transformed nonconformists" in a society often blinded by hate and division. This episode promises to reshape your perspective on conflict, encouraging a deeper understanding of nonviolence as a practical tool for change, rather than a mere ideal.Confront the harsh realities of hate and understand the necessity of a committed nonviolent stance through this episode's penetrating insights. We tackle the horrors of the Holocaust, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and more, examining how maintaining our humanity is essential in the face of violence that seeks to define our norms. By discussing the role of social media in desensitizing us to brutality and the challenges of upholding peace, you'll be drawn into a profound reflection on our moral responsibilities and the power of nonviolence in preserving our shared humanity. In our final chapter with Dr. West, we're inspired by the King Center's educational programs that breathe new life into the strategies of the 1960s civil rights movement and their enduring relevance today. We explore the beloved community's vision and the six steps of nonviolence in a way that's both enlightening and actionable. By the end of this episode, you'll not only have a greater appreciation for the complexities of waging peace but also be equipped with the knowledge and conviction to stand against violence in all its forms and declare yourself a peacemaker. Bridging Divides: Elie Printz's Inspiring Story of Peace Education in Jerusalem
Send us Fan MailElie was born and raised in Jerusalem to Christian parents who are neither Jewish nor Palestinian. Elie’s life experiences of growing up in Israel/Palestine is why she chose to pursue graduate studies in Conflict & Reconciliation and Creative Writing. Her research and writing skills are the foundation for the collection of stories of Peace Heroes from all around the world. Peace Heroes was born out of a desire to empower children living in the shadow of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to face the challenges around them and overcome them in positive, life-giving, and healing ways. It began its journey in 2013 when a Palestinian school in Jerusalem decided to purposefully teach its students peace in an environment marked by violence. The heroic warrior is a very strong concept/image within Palestinian and Israeli society, but for both communities it is completely tied in with militaristic achievements.Peace Heroes aimed to reframe the students’ sense of who is a hero by introducing them to a different kind of hero—real-life heroes who prioritize peace as a way of living over and above everything else. We believed that these remarkable women and men would not only inspire students with their stories but would also model the ways in which each and every one of us can make a difference for good in the world around usSupport Elie and find out more about this work: www.globalpeaceheroes.org https://www.instagram.com/globalpeaceheroes/Connect with Peacemakers in Israel/Palestinehttps://www.friendsofroots.net/https://www.theparentscircle.org/en/about_eng-2/https://bethbc.edu/christ-at-the-checkpoint/https://tentofnations.com/ This is a growing podcast, will you take 30 seconds and help us?Yes! The Audacious Art of Nikkolas Smith: The Superpower of Artivism and Change
Send us Fan MailI wanted to interview Nikkolas Smith because his art is like a lightning bolt. How does a Black man from Texas, educated at the famous HBCU Hampton University land in California to work as an Imagineer for Disney for 11 years make a portrait of George Floyd that crosses the continent and unites the world in grieving and raising our voices for justice? His story is stunning. His new book “The Artivist” asks us, Do you believe Art has the power to heal?I couldn’t get enough of his take on:Can all of us..and I mean all of us be an Artivist? How do we start supporting Artivism in our kids and Artist in our community? My fav quotes from him that made my face hurt from smiling so hard:“Whatever you are making or doing Sprinkle a little activism on it. You just gotta do it!""That thing you wish you could fix in the world, the broken bone… connect yourself to that. Make some art about it. Simple as that.”He is a Concept Artist, Author and Activist….but more than that I see him challenging injustice and indifference by refusing to accept the violence of racism and police brutality quietly. His art is a blow horn, it wakes us up to beauty and our human loss. His portraits helped us to grieve the loss of life collectively…and see the humanity that requires us to make change, His portraits create a Bridge for people..from the headlines they read in the news, to the humanity that connects us.. This was put on full display when my home state of Minnesota was reeling after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The portrait made connections between people across communities, our country and around the world to link arms together for George. People mourned together and held up that portrait to demand justice. When I look for people activating justice and instigating joy…he is doing it!He is also the illustrator of #1 NYT Bestse This is a growing podcast, will you take 30 seconds and help us?Yes! Discovering Identity and Justice Through Poetry with Activist Drew Jackson
Send us Fan MailLet's journey into the world of street level poetry and activism with the phenomenal poet, Drew Jackson. From his humble beginnings in South Jersey, we follow his path through writing hip hop lyrics, pastoring and into the realm of poetry. What does it mean to be a black man in America? Drew's work unpacks this weighty question, exploring themes of identity, justice, and the power held within our very names. We dive into Drew's powerful poems, each one a testament to his belief in the conversation between scriptures and racial violence, Jesus and the death penalty, being a dreamer while watching injustice unfold on the news. The potency of his words will make you rethink the violence we accept from racism and the importance of standing up for those on death row. It's a provocative look at the intersection of faith and justice, providing a much-needed floodlight illuminating the marginalized and oppressed. But it's not all heavy topics and deep dives; there's joy to be found in the small acts of justice that make a difference in our communities. Drew enlightens us about his volunteer experiences in a Catholic Worker community, and the transformative power of showing up for one another. His stories remind us all of what could happen if Love and God stepped into our headlines and got their way. This episode isn't just a discussion—it's a call to action.
