We, as the church, have no greater purpose or focus than this, to learn to live in the way of Jesus, within the context of the kingdom of God, bringing the gospel message to the world. Thoreau wrote that "the mass of men live lives of quiet desperation." So, among the redeemed where is the joy? Joy, in the believer, cannot be lost, because, like Love, true Joy is in the person of Jesus Christ, he owns it, he alone is the source, and the keeper. Joy can be misplaced, abandoned, seemingly lost, but it is there, we just need to find the way back to it, and that way is in Jesus. In this episode we discuss: 1. After last week's discussion we felt it necessary to come back and talk the other side of this matter. The enemy tries to erode our confidence in God and get us trusting in ourselves, but knowing that is a recipe for disaster, how can we get our confidence back in God? When we live in the flesh, or as Paul calls it, “to be carnally minded” (Romans 8:6), we reap loss, destruction, and erosion of the soul’s trust in God. The opposite, then, will be true. As we learn how to live from the heart, “to be spiritually minded,” we are rebuilding our confidence in God. How does this apply to the problem of the enemy’s assault against our confidence? We want to bring our soul back to this firm foundation, “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1). We need to know this, that we have a literal, active, merciless, and subtle enemy. Where to put the emphasis? Let us focus on “subtle” for now. His agenda is to destroy you, to crush your soul, to deplete your trust and hope, and to convince you that you are failing, God has abandoned you, and everyone around you is against you; and get this, he will work very hard to convince you that it is all your fault! This seems to be one of the great assaults of Satan in this age, to erode the confidence of God’s people. The more devout you are, the more you desire to know God, love God, and obey God, it seems the stronger this attack is. But mark this down, Satan is the liar, deceiver and accuser of the brethren. His narrative is false. But it does not mean it is not powerful. We need to recognize it and know how to deal with it when it comes! George MacDonald, the Scottish novelist and minister, wrote the following lines in his great work, The Diary of an Old Soul (1880)... "I search my heart--I search, and find no faith. Hidden He may be in its many folds-- I see him not revealed in all the world Duty's firm shape thins to a misty wraith. No good seems likely. To and fro I am hurled. I have no stay. This was a hard conversation to wrap up, there is so much to explore in this training in holiness! The Way of Holiness is not easy, let's just all collectively sigh, admit it, and take a deep breath. Though our good hearts long to walk in the way with Christ, we find ourselves opposed by the weak side of human nature, we commonly call the flesh. We are often in the struggle with the "fleshly lusts which war against our soul" (1 Peter 2:11), but the answer is not simply to try harder, we are going to need to train, to "exercise...unto godliness" (1 Tim. 4:7-8). This week, Mike, Corey, and Dean discuss the reality of this need, and some of the reasons why walking in the way of holiness is really challenging in this present world, but, here is hope, the way is still in Christ, and he will not fail!
