Happy New Year! 'Tis the season to set new goals and reflect on old ones. But if this is something you tend to do every year and slowly lose sight of your North Star goals, this episode is for you. I think our goal setting practice needs to be deeper than a list we'll lose somewhere in the folders of our computer or the corners of our notebooks. Goals can be a tricky thing because we tend to go all or nothing. Maybe you've created a list that's ten miles long of things you want to achieve. In today's episode, we're doing some deep reflection. Everything from what why we didn't achieve certain goals last year to why we want to achieve new ones this year. We're not just creating a list and walking away from it, we're really taking the time to sit down our current and past selves and create a plan for the future. This should be a fun exploration. Don't use this process as an excuse to beat yourself up for past mistakes. We're taking stock, having compassion for ourselves, and integrating everything we've learned for a brighter future. Sometimes, it can seem impossible to rest. Trust me, I've been there. Michelle is answering these questions with a real sense of compassion because she's been through it herself. Today, I'm joined by Mariela De La Mora, a leadership coach and eldest daughter of immigrants who has made it her mission to empower WOC and daughters of immigrants who want to break glass ceilings. I came to Mariela at one of my lowest points. I was grieving my father and struggling to keep up with the growing demands of my job. Over the course of our time together, Mariela has been a source of deep listening and attention. When I came together, I had no idea what I really wanted or needed from her, I just knew I needed support. And it actually started with Mariela asking me a lot of questions that would eventually get to the heart of my needs and desires. 21. Trend Report: Politics, Beauty, and Self-Care from the Olympics

It's time to take a quick look back on the trends we're seeing the wellness space! And this time, the Olympics really takes the spotlight. If you're anything like me, the Olympics took over your life for a short period. But we've also got some fascinating events happening in the world of politics that actually have a lot to do with wellness. Vice President candidate Tim Walz's discussion on IVF has made me pretty emotional. It's rare to see men discussing issues of fertility in the same way that women do. And with the attack on women's bodily autonomy, I think it's worth mentioning and hopefully, we see more of these discussions in the future. But on a lighter note, we're seeing more beauty at The Olympics than ever before! From Suni Lee sporting a Rhode phone case with her signature lip color to Jordan Child's graphic eyeliner - it's a whole show. I have to say, I wasn't expecting to be so inspired by the makeup and hair being sported at The Olympics. Tune in to hear all of my hot takes about the games because it turns out that sports and politics actually have a lot to do with beauty and wellness! 20. Advancing the Cause of Women's Health with Minimally Invasive Fibroid Treatment with Dr. Yan Katsnelson

The fact that up to 80 percent of black women by age of 50 or 70 percent of white women by age of 50 have fibroids doesn't make it normal condition. And if you have a practitioner telling you "it's not a big deal," I'd encourage you to push back. If you've been following the podcast for a while, you know that fibroids are a cause close to my heart. After going through the process of egg retrieval, only to realize that my fibroids were obstructing access and going through a myomectomy, I've made it my mission to understand and bring awareness to this issue. Dr. Yan Katsnelson is the CEO of USA Clinic - the parent company to USA Fibroid Center, as well as Fibroid Fighters, a foundation with a mission to bring awareness to fibroids. At the heart of his work is the belief that women deserve to live healthy lives and birth healthy babies and not enough research is being poured into these efforts. Even if you don't think fibroids is an issue for you, I'd urge you to listen to this episode, especially if you've been experiencing heavy, abnormal periods. Dr. Katsnelson is walking us through every aspect of the diagnosis and how we can properly advocate for ourselves. Unfortunately, so many women end up with no alternative given to them aside from heavily invasive surgeries. With a focus on uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), we delve into treatment options and the overall need for greater awareness and research in women's health. In this episode, we're chatting about: When you should ask for an transvaginal ultrasoundWhat questions to ask your doctor when you're diagnosed with fibroids The health benefits and risks of uterine fibroid embolization (UFE)How to choose between uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) and a myomectomy Connect with Dr. Katsnelson: Don't forget to subscribe, rate and review if you enjoyed this episode. 70% of women of child bearing age will develop fibroids. And even more alarming: 80% of Black Women of child bearing age will develop fibroids. If you're a repeat listener, you may know that I'm intimately aware of all things fibroids. After getting tested for PCOS in 2021, my doctor found fibroids. 17. Internalized Fatphobia and It's Systemic Implications with Renee Angelique

Summer really brings out all of the body talk. I know I've definitely caught myself saying I need to get "in shape" for the Summer as if the body I'm currently in is undesirable. So I thought it was the perfect time to chat with my friend, Renee Angelique, all about fat phobia. I'll be honest - I wasn't even consciously aware of my own fat phobia until I met Renee. Growing up in the ballet world, the messaging was always "the smaller you are, the better." And that sentiment permeates throughout our entire society. Did you know that in most states, you can actually be fired for being fat? It's totally legal! Lots of talk around fat phobia doesn't really go beyond "ugh, it must make it hard to date, right?" But this is actually a systemic issue that effects the day to day life of people in bigger bodies, beyond minor inconveniences. Of course, we're diving into the societal and medical implications of fat phobia. But we're also looking at the intersection with anti-fatness and anti-blackness. I really appreciate how candid Renee was in this conversation and I think you're really going to enjoy this episode! 16. How to Recover From Burnout (Hint: The Answer is not "Self-Care)

Did you know the 88% of Black Women report having felt burnout sometimes, often, or always? That's a super high percentage, but I can't say I'm surprised. You may have noticed that I've been a little bit off my posting schedule. Well guess why!? Your girl has coming out of the depths of burnt out. So I set aside my original plans for this episode to do a deep dive into all things burn out. What is it? How can we identify burnout (it's not as cut and dry as the dictionary definition might make it seem)? When you google "how to recover from burnout" so much of the advice is incredibly unhelpful. Telling me to prioritize sleep and self-care is just...obvious. Of course I know I should do that! But when we really are bogged down by stress coming at us from all sides and it feels like there is no light at the end of the tunnel, we need a little bit more than platitudes. So, I'm sharing the tools and resources that have been tremendously helpful for me in actually navigating burnout instead of shaming myself for not being on top of my self-care. I hope this episode is helpful to you if you're experiencing burnout like myself and many of my friends are right now! 15. May 2024 Trend Report: Beauty and Wellness Companies Flopping and Flourishing

The beauty and wellness industries are FULL of drama. Like, I'm not kidding you - it's never ending. From companies who say they're inclusive dropping the ball to wellness influencers showing their true colors, wellness and beauty trends are a gold mine for content. So today, I'm sharing the trends in the wellness and beauty space that I've been obsessing over in May. First, we're checking in on Operation Back to Baddie. How are we doing!? It's Pride month now which means it should technically be over. but I've decided to extend Operation Back to Baddie for myself until the beginning of Summer. Because if I'm honest, I'd give myself a B minus so far, and I want to get that A+. But the perfect way to boost our inspo for Operation Back to Baddie is to sit down for some tea first. First, let's chat about which companies have completely lost the plot. It's a lot of them, I can't lie! But I'll be zero-ing in on two companies that have come under fire recently for some...questionable decisions. "Tar in a bottle" sound familiar to you? If not, tune in to see what I'm talking about. Then, I'll close us off with one company that I'm actually really excited about. This is a celebrity brand. I know, hold the eye rolls, please! But all of the branding decisions so far seem incredibly aligned with this tennis pro's story and I'll definitely be trying her products and giving you my honest take. In this episode, we're chatting about: Why I'm continuing Operation Back to Baddie A makeup company that's getting roasted for "inclusive" products that aren't actually inclusive at all How Equinox is losing touch with reality by charging $40,000 for a new offer! Serena William's new makeup line WYN BeautyDon't forget to subscribe, rate and review if you enjoyed this episode. 14. How to Lose Weight Without Abandoning Cultural Food Traditions with Samantha Lee

Have you ever been told that the American diet culture is racist? I hadn’t until today’s conversation. With so many cultural foods being demonized in the wellness industry, today's guest is a thought leader in this space. Today I'm chatting with Samantha Lee, a weight loss coach who specializes in teaching people how to lose weight without abandoning their cultural identity. She's completely reframing what it means to diet … and truth be told, I had a couple “aha” moments during our conversation. Losing weight doesn't have to mean you have to isolate yourself at the family function when your aunt makes tamales or adobo or any other ethnic food. I can't wait for you to tune into this episode and walk away with actionable tips to begin your weight loss journey sans food shame. 13. How Ayurvedic Practices Can Transform Your Hair with Kiku Chaudhuri, Founder of Shaz & Kiks

Remember last week when I highlighted the brand "Shaz & Kiks" for AAPI appreciation month? Well, surprise! Today I'm joined by one of the co-founders - Kiku Chaudhuri to chat all things haircare and Ayurveda. Kiku and Shaz teamed up to create Shaz & Kiks as a way to honor their roots and work closely as sisters. They're bringing Ayurveda, the world's oldest healing system, straight to stores like Sephora. I love the way Kiku emphasizes to importance of a holistic approach. At the end of the day, no topical product will have a magic ingredient that balances your body and mind. I really enjoyed hearing more about Kiku's upbringing with a grandmother who would hand make beauty formulas for them. 11.Operation Back to Baddie: 30 Day Glow Up Challenge

Summer is coming! You know what that means? It's time to glow up. So join me in what I'm coining "Operation Back to Baddie." If the winter months have done a number on you, I'm right there with you. But I'm not just going to say "time to glow up" without an action plan! Look at this as a mind-body-spirit makeover! I'm honoring my health and happiness by facing the things I want to change and taking intentional action towards new habits. Spring is the perfect time to reassess. For example, I don't want to continue coming home from work and binging hours of television. It's not fulfilling and I've got creative projects I'd rather be pursuing in that time!  Look at this as a guidepost for your journey. Of course, you'll want to make changes to personalize the experience. So I encourage you to take some time and jot down the specifics of your glow up as I go through mine.  Let's also take a moment to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Appreciation Month! Birthday's are the best excuse for some reflection. And mine is on the 27th! Shout out to all my Taurus girlies out there.  So today's episode is a dedicated roundup. We're going through some of the highlights of the past year - the good, the bad and the ugly. And I won't stop there! I'm also giving you a comprehensive list of my current obsessions in beauty and wellness. From seeing Beyonce live in London to an intense surgery, this year has been action packed! I won't lie, when I sat down to record this, my first thought was "this year sucked." And I know that's not the attitude to have as I head into a new age. So I dug a little deeper and refreshed my memory with old photos. This is your reminder that one big, scary thing does not have to define your whole year. Yes, a lot of my brain space was taken up by a complex surgery this year. But I also have some incredible memories of get togethers with friends, travels and starting this podcast! 9. How a Tech Company is Changing the Game for Black Maternal Health with Dr. Lailah Kara Newton, Co-Founder of Aster

It's Black Maternal Health Week! According to a 2021 study put out by the CDC, Black women are 2.6 times more likely to die in childbirth compared to White women. Today's guest, Dr. Lailah Kara-Newton, is doing something major to change the system that got us here. Dr. Lailah Kara Newton is the Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Aster, a new company with a goal to transform prenatal and postnatal care. After a traumatic birth story that left her feeling unheard and frustrated, Dr. Lailah knew that the system that was meant to care for her, failed her and her baby. And as a doctor, she knew it was not a personal failing of any of her caretakers. Urgent needs slipped through the cracks because the system is broken. So, she teamed up with her sister to create Aster, a patient management platform designed to stop these situations from happening. In this episode, we're chatting about: Why Dr. Lailah Kara-Newton became a doctor Her birth story and the lack of communication that left her with PTSD The issues that Aster seeks to solve on the practice level How Black women can advocate for themselves in medical settings What's in Dr. Lailah's bag?ZO SkinDior Lip OilRhode Peptide Lip TreatmentRefy Lip TreatmentConnect with Dr. Lailah Kara Newton: AsterAster on IGLinkedinDon't forget to subscribe, rate and review if you enjoyed this episode. 8. Where Are All the Black Pilates Instructors?! A Conversation with Sonja R. Herbert, the Founder of Black Girl Pilates

How many Black pilates instructors have you had? Personally, I've never felt totally represented in the pilates space. I've even had trouble re-entering the space because I felt uncomfortable as the only Black person in the room in the past. Today's guest, Sonja R. Herbert, had an experience that seemed divinely orchestrated so that she could bridge that gap. Her very first pilates instructor was Black and her peers in that space were as well. Because of that, Sonja was hyper aware of how few Black pilates instructors she was meeting outside of that environment. So Black Girl Pilates was born out of a real need to bring Black pilates instructors together. She intentionally created this space specific for Black instructors, not generally people of color. As a result, she's seeing Black women in the pilates space becoming more visible, more confident, and creating their own programs. So if you've ever felt pulled towards pilates but found yourself disappointed by the lack of representation, this episode is for you!In this episode, we're chatting about: Black Girl Pilates' origin storyRecent trends for pilates in the Black community and pilates as a wholeHow racism shows up in the pilates industry Why we need to create our own safe spaces A brief history on pilates Connect with Sonja: Black Girl Pilates InstagramSonja's InstagramBlack Girl Pilates websiteDon't forget to subscribe, rate and review if you enjoyed this episode. Well today, you're in for a treat because I'm joined by Somatic Coach, Yuritzy Gomez Serrano.  If you've been through a traumatic event, you probably know what it's like to hold that in your body. After a traumatic birthing experience, Yuritzy dove head first to learn more about our nervous system. She's walking us through what somatic therapy is, how she helps her clients, and tools you can use today to really move feelings through your body. We'll be walking through different questions Yuritzy walks her clients through that you can ask yourself today. For example, if you're sad - how do you know you're sad? What is happening internally with that realization? So even if you're not fresh out of a traumatic event, I truly think that everyone will find takeaways in this episode! 6. How to Freeze Your Eggs: A Deep Dive Into Improving Fertility with Dr. Tia Jackson-Bey

If you tuned in last week, you know I just completed the egg freezing process for the third (and final) time. This week, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Jackson-Bey — the doctor that guided me through the whole experience. She's answering questions that I couldn't in the last episode. Because while I can tell you what it felt like, I don't have all the degrees and certifications necessary to give you the science and break down the facts. This episode is diving deep into the who, what, why and how of egg freezing. But we're going even deeper than egg freezing today. I wanted to get a fuller picture of fertility at large. What can we do to preserve our fertility? How are Black and Brown women treated differently when it comes to women's health? Does birth control actually reduce our fertility? What about men's fertility? We're diving into all of these questions and more. The unfortunate truth is, fertility is a subject that many people push aside for too long. So even you don't want kids anytime soon, it's important to think about these things now. A huge takeaway from this conversation is the importance of choosing a doctor you feel comfortable with. When I was going through the egg freezing process, it was incredibly vulnerable. I don't think I could have done it with a doctor that showed less care. So tune in if you want the full scoop on fertility! In this episode, we're chatting about:  Dr. Jackson-Bey's background and why she chose to focus on fertility The total lowdown on our biological clock Busting common misconceptions about egg freezing Risk factors for infertility When should women approach IVF?What's in my bag links: Tatcha blotting paperClassic ChapstickAmi ColeConnect with Dr. Tia Jackson-Bey:  Visit Dr. Tia Jackson-BeyListen to MD Girlfriend Experience Follow her on InstagramConnect with me:  TiktokInstagramDon't forget to subscribe, rate and review if you enjoyed this episode. 5. Should I Freeze My Eggs!? An Honest Look At My Egg Freezing Experience

Freezing your eggs can be such an intimidating process. From confronting your own fertility to injecting yourself without a medical degree, it's an intense process. But for many women, including myself, the option to freeze our eggs is not something we're willing to pass up. Now that I'm nearing the end of my egg freezing journey, I want to be transparent about the process. So whether you're considering freezing your own eggs and you're overwhelmed with information or you're done with the process too, this episode is for you. Because this isn't a topic that's openly discussed very often! There are things no one tells you. The injections burn, the hormones are intense, and I think everyone has a right to know what they're in for. You don't need to spend hours scouring blogs to prepare yourself - I've got it all laid out for you here. With all that being said, it's so worth it. There are some really cool, rewarding parts of the process. I personally loved being able to watch as my eggs grew. That's just not something you see everyday! And I have a newfound peace of mind about the future of my fertility and that's priceless to me. 4. What Inclusive Beauty Actually Looks Like with Dr. Chaneve Jeanniton, Founder of Brooklyn Face and Eye and Epi.Logic

I don't know about you, but when I think "beauty," the first thing I think of is the face. When we wake up every morning and look at the mirror, our eyes set the tone. Today's guest, Dr. Chaneve Jeanniton, is an oculofacial plastic surgeon and two time founder. First, she founded Brooklyn Face and Eye, a boutique practice that focuses on celebrating the patient's features. Talking to Dr. Chaneve about her work in plastic surgery was so refreshing because she doesn't believe in the anti-aging movement. Instead, her practice works with each patient's individual anatomy to address issues that are making the face look tired, sad, or worried. Then, Dr. Jeanniton took her passion for holistic facial refinement to a new level with Epi.Logic. She heard her patients express concerns about skincare products that weren't created with Black Women in mind. Did you know the clinical trials for your favorite skin care brand likely don't take diversity into account when gathering their participant pool? When Dr. Chaneve asked for a diverse participant pool, she was told initially told no. Thanks to her  persistence, we now have a clinical skincare brand that is actually made with all skin types in mind. You can find her products in Bergdorf Goodman, Neimann Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue - to name a few.Today, we're chatting about:  Why Dr. Jeanniton chose Oculofacial surgery as her expertise A few general pointers about facial plastic surgery How Epi.Logic was born as a solution to her patients' problem The dismissal Epi.Logic faced by people who didn't see a need for it What's in Dr. Chaneve Jeanniton's bag? Connect with Dr. Chaneve: - Brookyln Face and Eye- Epi.Logic- InstagramWhat's in my Bag Links: Ami ColeLaniege Lip MaskBagguAs always, you can stay up to speed on the Well Report by following me, your host, Danilae @itsdanilae on TikTok and Instagram. Don't forget to subscribe, rate and review if you enjoyed this episode. 3. What you need to know about Semaglutides (Ozempic, Wegovy) and Supplements with Dr. Ashley Griffith

Do you ever find yourself taking random supplements that are being hyped up on Tiktok? Or maybe you've been really tempted to jump on the Ozempic train lately. Whatever health fad is claiming our attention right now, it's important to get grounded in the science behind the decisions we're making. Today I'm joined by Dr. Ashley Griffith, clinical pharmacist and founder of KIHS  Wellness. Dr. Ashley's mission is to keep it healthy and simple by taking an integrative approach to serving her community's physical wellness. Right now, it feels like everyone and their mother is talking about semaglutides. It feels like they're being talked about as if they're miracle drugs. And here's the thing - they might be miracle drugs for some people! But nuance is being left out of the conversation, and Dr. Ashley is giving it to us straight. We're getting into specifics. Who are semaglutides for? What kind of dosage should someone who is trying to lose weight be on Vs. someone with diabetes? How long should a person be on semaglutides? And then we're talking supplements. It might feel like whichever supplements you elect to take aren't a big deal. After all, you can just pick them up off the counter at CVS. No big deal! But supplements can actually have serious side effects and we should take the decisions we make about supplements just as seriously as any other drug. Dr. Ashley is bringing a refreshing, science backed approach. She has such a valuable perspective and I'm so excited for you to tune into this episode! In this episode, we're chatting about: The good, the bad and the ugly of semaglutides Shame around food as a person of color Developing a health plan with your family's medical history in mindHow to find the right supplements for you Connect with Dr. Ashley: KIHS WellnessInstagramTiktokDon't forget to subscribe, rate and review if you enjoyed this episode. 2. How to get started with a Running routine with Percell Dugger, Nike Coach and Founder of Fit For Us

When I was thinking about who I wanted to kick off The Well Report with, it was glaringly clear to me that I'd ask Percell to be my first guest. He's a Nike Trainer, the Founder of Fit For Us (a media agency), The Care Community, my personal trainer, and my friend ... and has a wealth of knowledge and passion for exercise and the advancement of Black and Brown people within wellness. I genuinely couldn't ask for a better perspective to share with you all.  His mother's passion for wellness and his father's dedication to community service  laid the foundation for his coaching journey. A huge takeaway from my conversation with Percell was his commitment to accessibility in wellness. As a middle school girls basketball coach, Percell faced the way his coaching perspective and experience was informed by patriarchy. And ever since, he's been moving with inclusivity in mind. His agency, Fit For Us, was founded to create community and opportunity for Black and Brown people in the wellness space. Tune in to hear: - How Percell became a Nike trainer - Percell's biggest running tips - All about Fit For Us and it's radical cousin, The Care Community - Tangible tips to start your fitness journey - What's in Percell's gym bagYou can learn more about Percell on TikTok and IG And of course, don't forget to leave a review and drop me a follow on TikTok and/or Instagram. Don't forget to subscribe, rate and review if you enjoyed this episode. 1. What even is The Well Report? A background + understanding of what this podcast is, where it came from, and who the host is

Welcome to The Well Report! My name is Danilae Smith but my friends call me Dani. If you're listening to this first episode — that means you can call me Dani because you're clearly a real one. I'm a new podcast host, corporate baddie by day, and a wellness connoisseur at night, and in this first episode — things get personal. I talk about why I started this podcast, what I hope to accomplish with it ... and how my personal wellness journey went from a surface level, aesthetic based understanding to a much deeper understanding of the importance of wellness and true self care. While there's a place for bubble baths, candles, and skincare (some of the genuine loves of my life), wellness is so much more than that. In this episode, I talk about how the sudden passing of my father, dealing with my fertility, and having an abdominal surgery (all in the span of two years)  forced me to look deeper into what wellness actually is. I had to look across the world of wellness — mentally, physically, and spiritually to ground me during the hardest couple of years of my life.  It was during this time, I leaned on wellness podcasts and the under-representation became glaringly apparent — diversity was seriously lacking. The conversations happening in the wellness space are important and expansive, but they are incomplete. And I'm hoping to bring forward and highlight more diverse perspectives in wellness. Together, we'll be diving into a wellness space that is actually diverse and inclusive of more than one experience.  If you enjoyed this episode and want more of this content, please drop me a review (or shoot me a DM) so I can hear directly from you.
