The Torah is meant to be read as guidance to the Jewish people for this very day. I’m this Dvar Torah, Nachmanides speaks straight to the Jewish people of today (Oct. 2023). Lech Lecha doesn’t just mean leaving behind bad traits and moving forward in life, it speaks on a general concept of leaving your comfort zone and coming to Israel, just as Avraham did. While I’m not usually one to make this statement, given recent events I feel more than ever that a Jew is safest in the holy land, where HaShem’s eyes are upon it from the beginning of the year until the end. To all my brothers and sisters outside of Israel, it’s time to leave your comfort zones (which even these days are not so comfortable) and come home. Bribery blinds the eyes of the wise (Devarim 16:19). In this weeks Torah Portion, we have the famous line cited above. The parsha of shoftim highlights laws for judges, laws associated with war, idolatry and sorcery, and also the famous verse that man is a tree of the field. My focus here is on how exactly bribery blinds the eyes of the wise. I recently read a book called “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind” by T. Harv Eker where he speaks about how the mentality and relationship we have with money is usually passed down from our parents. So, the way our parents related to money is typically close to the way we do. Bridging this to a Gemara in Brachos helps us understand a similar concept that our sages discuss generations ago. The sins of the father are passed down to the children. This idea is heavily debated in the Gemara, but looking at the sources together helps us to see the modern day example. It’s important for all of us to know our relationships with different objects and tools in life; money being one of them. What psychological dna informs our relationships to these things? As we enter Elul, it may be the right time to start reflecting and refining these habits and characteristics. “See, I have placed before you today a blessing and a curse.” This is the opening verse of this week’s Torah portion. Why does HaShem feel the need to say the word “See” at the opening? As we know, sight has been a big theme in the past weeks as we know that Moshe Rabbeinu was not allowed to enter the land, but only to see it.As observant Jews, we are accustomed to seeing everything. But as people, there may the things we miss from time to time. With the month of Elul fast approaching, it’s important that the one thing we look deeply into should be ourselves. “Am I living the way I want to?” “Am I moving up or down in my relationship to HaShem?” “Am I coming closer to my goals?”There’s well-known statement in Chassidus that “it is the nature of G-d, to do good.” That is how He has constructed this world we live in. For those that choose to follow His rule book, the good will flow immediately. For those that do not, the good will not flow, but even more, the punishment will only come later so as to give us enough time to find the right path.
