Vegans for Palestine Podcast - Episode 24 - Vegan Palestinian Hospitality

This episode is an in-house conversation between two Palestinian vegans, unpacking what it really means to live a vegan lifestyle within a culture where food and hospitality are everything. We chat about how sharing meals is such a big part of showing love and care, and how that can sometimes feel tricky when your values around food are different. There’s an honest look at that balancing act—staying true to your beliefs while also respecting cultural traditions and not wanting to offend anyone or appear '3yb'.  The conversation flows through real-life experiences, like bringing your own food to gatherings, sharing vegan dishes with others, and finding ways to communicate your needs without it feeling awkward. There’s also a personal reflection on motherhood, and how raising a child can shape the way you approach food, values, and everyday routines. Enjoy this one!A captioned version for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people is available here. The music in this episode: Maysa Daw is a Palestinian singer-songwriter and actress, known for her work with the hip-hop group DAM, where she blends indie, hip-hop, and liberation engaged themes. Vegans for Palestine Podcast - Episode 23 - Unapologetic Liberation & Radical Solidarity

In this episode, Dalal sits down with Akbar Ali to unpack veganism, animal rights, and what it really means to advocate for change. Akbar shares his journey to veganism, reflecting on the early experiences that shaped his commitment to animal rights and social justice.Together, they explore how mainstream animal rights movements have shifted from liberation-focused roots to more consumption-driven approaches—and question whether this shift is truly effective. The conversation dives into the links between systemic oppression affecting both humans and animals, highlighting the importance of striving for total liberation rather than selective advocacy. They also get real about the challenges of speaking up—navigating relationships, social pressure, and the discomfort that can come with challenging dominant norms. Akbar leaves listeners with a powerful message: be unapologetic, stay committed, and don’t be afraid to push for a more just world for all beings.A captioned version for Deaf and Hard of Hearing viewers is available here. Follow Akbar Ali: https://www.instagram.com/veganfeverdreamz/The music in this episode is Palestinian grunge created by Khalas. Khalas is a Palestinian Grunge band from Akka, Palestine, known for blending alternative rock with Arab influences and politically conscious lyrics. Vegans for Palestine Podcast - Episode 22 - From Spain to Palestine: Anti-Colonial Vegan Activism

In this episode of the Vegans for Palestine podcast, Dalal speaks with Frasco about his journey from growing up in a poor village in Spain to becoming an intersectional vegan activist shaped by anti-racist, feminist, and anti-colonial struggles. Frasco explains how learning about speciesism and watching the documentary Earthlings led him to connect animal liberation with broader systems of domination, while also confronting vegaphobia and social backlash. Together, they critique racist and orientalist tendencies within mainstream animal rights campaigns, arguing that advocacy must be accountable to the communities it addresses and rooted in justice rather than moral superiority. Drawing on examples from Palestine, Latin America, and Europe, they link animalization, colonial violence, and land dispossession, ultimately presenting veganism as a global ethical framework that challenges hierarchies of power rather than a Western luxury or trend. This episode is captioned for Deaf and Hard of Hearing viewers here. You can follow Frasco here https://www.instagram.com/frascfz?utm...Link to his book is here:  / dtyk5yqigglrrnfjm4tgq6z9iq5zzkb1dzkdrs0  Book published by   / animalesysociedad  The music in this episode is by a Palestinian singer, artist and song writer named Jawdat Khoury. Vegans for Palestine Podcast - Episode 20 - Gaza’s Animals & Nature: Crushed Amid Genocide–Ecocide

Rimona Afana, a Romanian–Palestinian researcher, activist, and multimedia artist, talks to Dalal about the forgotten victims of the atrocities in Gaza: animals and nature. Rimona discusses the continuities between genocide and ecocide in Gaza, including: toxicity from explosives and destroyed infrastructure; water pollution and scarcity; damage to plants and soil; greenhouse gas emissions from war, pre-war, post-war activities; and lasting ties between mass atrocity and epigenetics. Moving to direct harms to animals, she shows how millions of animals have been killed, injured, maimed, starved, displaced, looted; how some animals have been weaponized, turned into both combatants and victims; and how human and nonhuman rights remain decoupled for many Israelis. Finally, she addresses the paralysis of international law and of accountability fora, and our role in confronting impunity and outsourcing, key features of crimes in Palestine.A captioned version of this episode for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people is available here https://youtu.be/DGMGo3CEouUEmail: [email protected] LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/rimonaafana Facebook (work): www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582808854096Facebook (personal profile): www.facebook.com/rim.rmn Instagram (work): www.instagram.com/rimona.afanaInstagram (personal): www.instagram.com/rim.on.a Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/rimona-afana.bsky.socialX: https://x.com/rimona_afanaMy Ecocide/Speciesism project: www.facebook.com/ecocide.speciesismORCID: https://orcid.org/0009-0007-0871-3530Find here a list of Rimona's recent publications on human and nonhuman rights.Israel’s infamous weapons producers continue profiting from genocide/ecocide, exporting advanced technologies of murder, destruction, and surveillance as “field-tested”. Vegans for Palestine Podcast - Episode 19 - Animal Rights are Political

Dalal has an interesting conversation with Georges that turns deeply personal and political, tracing how witnessing violence and injustice from the genocide in Gaza to the everyday cruelty of industrial farming transformed one activist’s understanding of ethics and liberation. Georges reflects on the interconnectedness of human rights, animal rights and environmental justice, arguing that the struggle for freedom must include all beings. Through vivid stories of activism, from running a vegan restaurant to campaigning in Lebanese politics, they show both the hope and the heartbreak of trying to change entrenched systems of power. Vegans for Palestine Podcast - Episode 18 - Handala in Exile

In this episode, two vegan Palestinians in the diaspora, Suzi and Rayan, reflect on life in exile and the enduring struggle for identity and justice whilst living outside of Palestine. Suzi shares her family’s story of fleeing their destroyed village during the 1948 Nakba, recounting how her relatives rebuilt their lives while holding onto their Palestinian heritage. Suzi reflects on moments of connection with other Palestinians across the diaspora and how recent events in Gaza have reopened generational wounds of displacement, trauma and loss. Suzi also speaks about Handala, the beloved Palestinian icon created by artist Naji al-Ali — a barefoot child with his back turned to the world, representing the innocence of exile and the steadfast resistance of the Palestinian people. Handala stands as a timeless symbol of defiance, resilience, and the refusal to accept injustice. The episode concludes with Suzi reflecting on her lifelong compassion for animals, her journey into veganism, and how empathy and justice are deeply interwoven in her Palestinian identity and ethical practice.Captioned for Deaf & Hard of Hearing people here. Naji al-Ali remembered: A Palestinian cartoonist gunned down in London. Vegans for Palestine Podcast - Episode 16 - M'jaddara

M'jaddara is what happens when brown lentils, rice (or bulgur), carmelized onions, cumin and golden olive oil come together. It is one of many Palestinian vegan dishes. You might think this episode is just about the dish, but you'll need to tune in to find out more! Dalal and Rayan discuss the warmth, versatility, and cultural significance of the dish. M'jaddara is both a comfort food enjoyed with salad, bread, or (vegan!) yogurt, and a symbol of simplicity, community, and resilience. The episode also traces m'jaddara's history, noting how colonialism, the Nakba, and refugee food aid turned it into both a survival meal and a reminder of loss, while also celebrating its place in Palestinian cookbooks, literature, and family memory. So this episode is not just about the dish itself, but how cuisine connects to identity and resistance. . This episode has captions that are edited for Deaf and Hard of Hearing viewers. View here. Vegans for Palestine Podcast - Episode 15 - White Veganism II

They are back! Dr Leila and Rayan are here to discuss the taboo topic of white veganism - a reality often denied by several vegans across the globe. This episode explores how white veganism reproduces racism, colonialism, and Zionism. Dr. Leila and Rayan critique the appropriation of food, the marginalisation of BIPOC vegans, and how mainstream veganism prioritises whiteness, consumerism, and neo-colonial Zionism. They highlight how ex-vegans often shift toward Zionism and the far right, questioning whether such individuals were ever committed to the liberation of human and non-human animals. Cultural appropriation, tokenism, and complicity with oppressive institutions are also discussed. Dr Leila asks a very important question - is there any hope for the vegan movement? This podcast episode has edited captions for Deaf and Hard of Hearing viewers. Vegans for Palestine Podcast - Episode 14 - The Za'atar Queen

In this episode, Dalal shares her journey to veganism, deeply rooted in Palestinian culture and her upbringing in a felahi community. Her blog "Vegan on Budget / Za’atar Queen" emerged from a desire to document her plant-based lifestyle while highlighting Palestinian culinary heritage, especially the cultural and political significance of za’atar. She explains how za’atar is not 'a seasoning' but a symbol of identity, resistance, and heritage for Palestinians. Also, Dalal reflects on growing up with fresh, homegrown vegetables and how veganism for her is a continuation of Felahi traditions. She critiques mainstream veganism's consumerist focus and emphasizes the need for Arabic-language vegan resources, leading her to create the podcast What the Bateekh. Through conversations with Arab vegans, she explored how veganism intersects with anti-colonial struggle, memory, and identity. Olive harvesting, za’atar preparation, and food sharing are presented as acts of cultural resilience and resistance to Israeli settler colonialism, apartheid and occupation. For Dalal, veganism in Palestine has emerged as a political and cultural expression of survival, memory, and Palestinian liberation.Captioned version for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people available here. Vegans for Palestine Podcast - Episode 13 - Living as a Vegan Muslim in France

French activist Bouchara joins Rayan to discuss veganism, racism, Islamophobia and political activism in France. A long-time anti-speciesist and animal liberation advocate, Bouchara shares how her journey to veganism stems from childhood compassion for animals and scientific inquiry into animal exploitation. Her research focuses on the intersections between speciesism, sexism, racism, and other systems of domination, using a sociopsychological lens to explore how prejudice influences societal attitudes toward animals and veganism. For migrants and people of colour—especially Muslims—entering French vegan spaces is further complicated by systemic racism, Islamophobia, and exclusionary practices within white-dominated activist circles. Bouchara shares painful experiences of being sidelined from leftist and vegan movements for addressing racism or expressing her Muslim identity. The transcript for this episode is edited for accessibility here.
