Spiritual but Not Religious? Let’s Talk!

Episode 1: Foundation, Faith & The Questions We Are Afraid to AskEpisode 1 introduces the heart behind Wisdom in Heels: a space where spiritually mature, emotionally grounded, purpose-driven women can ask real questions and receive biblically grounded answers. This conversation begins with honesty, not performance. Why This Podcast Was BornSam shares the tension that sparked the show. She grew up in church and was poured into by mentors who were also members of fraternities and sororities. These were people who nurtured her, supported her education, and shaped her character. Later, she began hearing those same organizations labeled as demonic. That disconnect hurt. The episode begins with a spiritual struggle:How can people who loved and invested in me be called evil because of an organization?Instead of suppressing the question, she brought it to someone she trusted spiritually. That conversation became Wisdom in Heels. The Vision and MissionVision:To cultivate a global sisterhood of spiritually mature, emotionally grounded, purpose-driven women who lead with wisdom and live aligned with God’s truth.Mission:To walk boldly in the Word and gracefully in purpose by equipping young women through conversation. What Is Wisdom? Two perspectives emerge.Sam’s view:Wisdom is life learned experience. It is knowledge tested by fire. It is not just knowing something. It is having lived through it and being able to tell the story from the other side.Rev. Leela’s view:Wisdom is knowledge applied through the Holy Spirit. It is not just quoting Scripture or controlling how others apply it. It is teaching the Word and allowing the Spirit to guide personal application.A key tension is addressed. The church often gives knowledge but tries to control how it is applied.Religion vs SpiritualityA major theme in this episode.Sam questions why people say they are spiritual but not religious. She challenges transactional church messaging and asks why commitment sometimes feels disconnected from real emotional struggles.Rev. Lila responds that everyone is religious because we all live by routines. Spiritual maturity in Christianity means relationship with Christ and living out the fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5.Love.Joy.Peace.Patience.Kindness.Goodness.Faithfulness.Gentleness.Self control.Spirituality without fruit is performance.A strong takeaway emerges. Some people want spirituality without commitment. Why People Leave ChurchSam explains that as she grew, the church did not grow with her. Youth ministry prepared her for childhood, but adulthood struggles were met with condemnation instead of context. Transparency and testimony were missing.Rev. Lila acknowledges that some churches operate from control or fear. Some leaders hide behind the cross without sharing their own testimony. Community has weakened in many spaces. However, not all churches are unhealthy. Growth requires intentional participation. A healthy church should refuel your spirit like a gas station refuels your car.Fraternities, Sororities and FaithThe episode returns to the original question. The conclusion is clear. Organizations are not inherently evil. If you seek the Kingdom first, everything else aligns. Many civil rights leaders were both church members and fraternity or sorority members. Historically, community has been strengthened through both.Division weakens community.Core Spiritual AnchorsThe enemy comes to kill, steal and destroy. We overcome by testimony.Favor follows faithfulness.Relationship matters more than performance.God speaks directly to individuals.
