I Was Sick For 15 Years

I was a doctor, and I still couldn't fix my own health. Today I'm sharing something I haven't talked about before. My own health journey. For nearly 15 years, through college, medical school, and residency, I dealt with symptoms that I couldn't explain. High blood pressure. High cholesterol. Gut issues. Brain fog. Poor sleep. Low energy. I did what most people do. I saw doctors. I took medications. I tried to manage each symptom on its own. But I still felt terrible. At some point, I realized this wasn't working. So I stepped back and started asking a different question. What does my body actually need? That's when things started to change. Better sleep. Better food. More consistent movement. Less intensity. Less noise and stress. Over time, everything improved. Today, at 47, I feel better than I did during some of the most important years of my life.   --------------------------Download my free 6 Healthy-Aging Habits ebook: https://www.healthyaging.drashori.com/ Book a health coaching session: https://drashori.com/health-coaching/  Subscribe to my free Healthy Aging newsletter: https://newsletter.drashori.com/  Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DrAshoriMD Subscribe on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@DrAshoriMD  Join me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrAshoriMD --------------------------- Not ready to book any sessions?  Get your healthy aging score or find out your healthy aging type by taking these fun, free quizes on my website.  Thank you for listening to this week's episode of Doctor Turned Health Coach by Mohammad Ashori MD. The Floor vs Ceiling Mistake When it Comes to Fitness

One hard workout means nothing without consistency. Today I'm talking about one of the biggest mistakes people make with exercise. They focus too much on intensity. Most people think they need to push harder, train longer, and exhaust themselves to get results. But that's not how your body actually adapts. In this episode, I break down the difference between your "ceiling" and your "floor." Your ceiling is your best performance. Your floor is what you can do consistently, even on your worst day. And the truth is, your body adapts to consistency, not one hard workout. I also talk about why chasing intensity leads to burnout, missed workouts, and lack of progress. And how building a strong "floor" allows you to actually improve your performance over time. Why Your Doctor Is No Longer Enough

Most people expect their doctor to do something they simply can't. Today I'm talking about the difference between primary care and health coaching. Because a lot of people don't fully understand what each one is designed to do. Primary care is essential. It helps you screen for disease, diagnose problems, and manage medical conditions. But the reality is, most primary care doctors don't have the time to go deep into your day to day habits. They can guide you. They can prescribe. They can recommend. But they can't walk with you through the implementation. And that's where health coaching comes in. In this episode, I break down how these two roles are different. I talk about why they can't replace each other. And how combining both can give you a much more complete approach to your health. The Minimum Dose For Better Health - Why You Might Be Doing Too Much

The best health plan is the one you barely notice. Today I'm talking about the minimum effective dose for your health. And why doing less is often the better strategy. Most people assume they need a lot of time, effort, and intensity to see health results. But what I've seen over and over again in my patients and coaching clients is the opposite. The more people overcommit, the more likely they are to burn out and stop. In this episode, I break down why starting small is the real path to long term success. I talk about how consistency beats intensity. And why the healthiest people are not the ones doing everything perfectly, but the ones who do the basics consistently over time. I also walk through practical ways to build a baseline routine, create a "busy day" version of your habits, and track what actually matters. Motivation Comes After Action

If you're waiting to feel motivated before you start, you're doing it backwards. Today I'm talking about motivation. And why most people misunderstand it. A lot of people think motivation is something you need before you start. Motivation is actually a result. It's something that shows up after you've been consistent with your habits and start seeing results. In this episode, I break down where motivation really comes from and how to build it in a way that actually lasts. We also talk about why excitement is often mistaken for motivation, and why that leads people to fall off. And I walk through how I help my health coaching clients stay consistent, even when they feel bored, stressed, or unmotivated. How To Safely Get Off PPIs - Weaning off of Proton Pump Inhibitors

This is one of the most common medications people get stuck on. Today I'm talking about proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs, the most commonly used medications for acid reflux. They work very well. That's part of the problem. Because once you've been on them for a couple of weeks, it becomes very difficult to come off. In this episode, I walk through why that happens and how to safely taper off. I also explain what to expect during the process, because there will be some rebound symptoms. We also talk about practical ways to manage symptoms during that transition. Things like using short-term alternatives, adjusting how and when you eat, and making realistic changes that you can actually stick to. Because most of the standard advice out there is not sustainable. The goal here is not just to stop a medication. The goal is to feel better without needing it long term. Why Exercise Zones Don't Matter Much - Zone 2 vs Zone 5

Zone 2 vs Zone 5 sounds scientific, but for most people, it doesn't matter. Everyone is talking about Zone 2 and Zone 5 training right now. And if you listen to enough podcasts, you might think your entire health depends on staying in the "right zone." But for most people, that's not how health works. In this episode, I break down when heart rate zones actually matter, and when they don't. If you're training for a specific performance goal, then yes, zones can be useful. But if your goal is long-term health, energy, and staying active as you age, focusing too much on zones can actually distract you from what matters most. The healthiest people aren't calculating their heart rate every day. They're just moving. They walk, they lift, they carry things, they stay active in diferent ways. Why the Room Feels Like It's Spinning & Solutions to Vertigo

Dizziness is incredibly uncomfortable, and it can also be confusing. But not all dizziness is the same, and the cause often tells us how to deal with it. In this episode, I talk about a symptom that many people experience at some point in their lives: dizziness. But dizziness can mean many different things. Some people feel lightheaded. Some people feel unsteady. And others experience the sensation that the room is spinning around them. That spinning sensation is called vertigo, and it often points to a problem with the body's balance system in the inner ear. In this episode, I explain how I think about dizziness when patients come to see me. I talk about: • the difference between vertigo and other types of dizziness • the most common causes of vertigo • conditions like benign positional vertigo, Ménière's disease, vestibular migraine, and PPPD • how doctors start evaluating dizziness • and what people can do to cope with dizziness when it happens Understanding what type of dizziness you're experiencing is often the first step toward solving the problem. --------------------------Download my free 6 Healthy-Aging Habits ebook: https://drashori.com/ebook/longevity-habits/  Book a health coaching session: https://drashori.com/health-coaching/  Subscribe to my free Healthy Aging newsletter: https://newsletter.drashori.com/  Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DrAshoriMD Join me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrAshoriMD --------------------------- Not ready to book any sessions?  Get your healthy aging score or find out your healthy aging type by taking these fun, free quizes on my website.  Thank you for listening to this week's episode of Doctor Turned Health Coach by Mohammad Ashori MD. Why Health Insurance Keeps Getting More Expensive

Health insurance isn't meant to keep you healthy. If you understand this, you'll use this product much more effectively.  Many people assume that having health insurance means their health is protected. But those are two very different things. Health insurance is a financial product. It exists to protect you from catastrophic medical expenses. It does not automatically mean you are healthy. Over the years, I have seen many patients struggle not only with their health but also with the financial burden that comes with medical care. Medical bills are one of the most common reasons people fall into serious debt or even bankruptcy. In this episode I explain: • why health insurance exists • why healthcare costs continue to rise • why health and health insurance should never be confused • how I think about protecting yourself financially against medical risk Understanding this distinction can completely change the way you think about your health, your finances, and the decisions you make about medical care. Motivation Isn't Something You Find, It's Something You Create

People constantly ask how to find motivation. But motivation is usually the result of something else entirely. In this episode, motivation is explained in a different way. Not as something you find, but as something that develops after consistent action. Motivation is often the side effect of doing something long enough to see results. When daily habits start producing real changes, better energy, better health markers, better physical fitness, motivation begins to grow naturally. The episode also explores: • why excitement is often mistaken for motivation • how journaling and reflection help uncover what truly matters • why consistency is more important than inspiration • how positive feedback loops create long-term motivation --------------------------Download my free 6 Healthy-Aging Habits ebook: https://drashori.com/ebook/longevity-habits/  Book a health coaching session: https://drashori.com/health-coaching/  Subscribe to my free Healthy Aging newsletter: https://newsletter.drashori.com/  Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DrAshoriMD Join me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrAshoriMD --------------------------- Not ready to book any sessions?  Get your healthy aging score or find out your healthy aging type by taking these fun, free quizes on my website.  Thank you for listening to this week's episode of Doctor Turned Health Coach by Mohammad Ashori MD. Relationships Are Health, Not Just Feelings

Five practical ways to make a relationship a health asset. A lot of health conversations get stuck on labs, meds, and biometrics. Health also lives inside relationships. In the TREND method, R stands for relationships. This episode is a conversation with my wife, Niloo, a rheumatologist, about how romantic relationships shape sleep, stress, anxiety, energy, and day-to-day health. A big myth gets challenged here. Sleeping in separate beds or rooms does not automatically mean something is wrong. Sometimes it is a smart, temporary move to protect sleep while a couple works through snoring, light sleep, illness, stress, or burnout. Better sleep often makes the relationship stronger, not weaker. The episode closes with 5 ways a romantic relationship can improve health: know personal needs outside the relationship protect time for those needs communicate with curiosity and vulnerability support a partner's priorities while checking expectations reconnect intentionally through shared time and rituals   Links, Products, Services Mentioned TREND Method, "R" for Relationships  Attachment styles (anxious, avoidant, secure) as a relationship stress lens Couples therapy, individual therapy, journaling  Sleep strategies for couples: separate rooms, sofa, extra bedroom, window cracked, fan on, two mattresses side-by-side   --------------------------Download my free 6 Healthy-Aging Habits ebook: https://drashori.com/ebook/longevity-habits/  Book a health coaching session: https://drashori.com/health-coaching/  Subscribe to my free Healthy Aging newsletter: https://newsletter.drashori.com/  Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DrAshoriMD Join me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrAshoriMD --------------------------- Not ready to book any sessions?  Get your healthy aging score or find out your healthy aging type by taking these fun, free quizes on my website.  Thank you for listening to this week's episode of Doctor Turned Health Coach by Mohammad Ashori MD. The 3-Bucket Fix For Seasonal Allergies: Load, Reactivity, Inflammation

Same pollen, different day, totally different reaction. There's a good reason for it! Seasonal allergies feel unpredictable. One day things are fine, the next day symptoms are on fire. This episode breaks allergies down as a threshold problem. Symptoms show up when allergen load + immune reactivity + baseline inflammation exceed tolerance. A practical roadmap follows that same framework: Lower allergen load (air, bedding, dust, outdoor exposure) Tune immune reactivity (hormones and the gut microbiome) Treat inflammation with a stepwise approach, starting local, then systemic only if needed Specific tools covered include sinus rinses, filtration, bedding protocols, high-histamine foods to test, and a clear medication ladder (nasal steroids, nasal antihistamines, eye drops, oral antihistamines, plus when allergists and immunotherapy make sense). The goal is fewer flares, better control, and fewer "guessing" days. Links, Products, Services Mentioned NeilMed sinus rinse (saline squeeze bottle kits) HEPA air purifiers (room units) HVAC air filters (whole-home filters) Intranasal corticosteroids: fluticasone (Flonase), mometasone (Nasonex), budesonide (Rhinocort) Intranasal antihistamines: azelastine, olopatadine Allergy eye drops: olopatadine, ketotifen (Zaditor), azelastine ophthalmic (varies) Ipratropium nasal spray (Atrovent) for runny nose Oral antihistamines: fexofenadine (Allegra), cetirizine (Zyrtec), loratadine (Claritin) Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) Montelukast (Singulair), usually with allergist involvement Immunotherapy: allergy shots (subcutaneous), sublingual immunotherapy for select allergens --------------------------Subscribe to my free Healthy Aging newsletter: https://newsletter.drashori.com/  Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DrAshoriMD Join me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrAshoriMD --------------------------- Not ready to book any sessions?  Get your healthy aging score or find out your healthy aging type by taking these fun, free quizes on my website. The Buffer Method: A Simple Way to Fix "I Feel Off"

Some people ignore early signals from their body and tell themselves they will deal with it later. Other people panic and assume the worst. Both paths lead to bad outcomes. In this episode, I explain a method used in my health coaching called the Buffer Method. It is a practical way to respond to those early "I feel off" signals without overreacting, and without ignoring them. You will learn the step-by-step process: notice the signal and write it down clearly write down the story, fears, and assumptions that show up identify which "buffer" might be running thin, sleep, nutrition, stress, or recovery run a tiny one-week experiment with one small change let your body give feedback, better, worse, or different, and adjust from there This is not about perfection. It is about catching small problems early, making small changes, and staying in the driver's seat. This is how healthy aging starts. Not with fear. Not with denial. The 3-Part At-Home Plan to Lower Blood Pressure - Case Study

In this episode, I share a simple, practical plan to lower blood pressure, based on a real scenario. One of my health coaching clients asked for advice for her dad, a retired man who is 5'8", 196 pounds, eats restaurant food daily, and has blood pressure around 157 over 80 to 90. He is also dealing with a salivary gland stone, which can be linked to dehydration and mineral balance. We focus on three levers that reliably lower blood pressure: stress reduction, using simple breathing and a short daily calm routine exercise beyond walking, with a very low barrier approach to resistance training nutrition that balances sodium with potassium and minerals, without needing perfection This is not about extreme dieting or complicated routines. It is about doing small things daily that add up and stick. --------------------------Subscribe to my free Healthy Aging newsletter: https://newsletter.drashori.com/  Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DrAshoriMD Join me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrAshoriMD --------------------------- If you are looking for a customized health plan to help you navigate your health, book a 1-hour paid session with me. Saturated Fat in 2025: What the Evidence Shows

Saturated fat has become one of the most debated nutrition topics in recent years. Some people believe it has no role in heart disease. Others believe it should be avoided entirely. In this episode, I walk through what current evidence actually suggests, without absolutes or fear-based messaging. We discuss: Why medicine works on evidence, not certainty Who saturated fat may be a problem for and who it may not be Why individual risk matters more than blanket rules How saturated fat adds up across the day Practical percentage targets based on risk and calorie intake Why replacing saturated fat with sugar is not the solution This is a risk-based, individualized way to think about saturated fat, not a one-size-fits-all rule. How to Build Healthy Habits Without Burning Out

Many adults in their 30-50s start a healthy lifestyle feeling motivated, excited, and ready to change everything at once. And then they burn out. In this episode, I explain the most common reasons health coaching clients give up on healthy habits, even when they are doing "the right things." We talk about: Why taking on too much too quickly leads to burnout How the brain is wired to resist rapid change Why slow, almost unnoticeable changes work better long term How to stay motivated when results feel slow The importance of believing in the process, not just the outcome If you have ever started strong and then fallen off track, this episode will help you rethink how change actually sticks. Sustainable health habits is all about consistency, belief, and patience.   -------------------------- Subscribe to my free Healthy Aging newsletter: https://newsletter.drashori.com/  Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DrAshoriMD Join me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrAshoriMD --------------------------- If you are looking for a customized health plan to help you navigate your health, book a 1-hour paid session with me. Why Consistency Beats Motivation Every Time

Most long-term health success comes from boring, repeatable habits. In this episode, I talk about something that sounds simple but is incredibly powerful: consistency and persistence. When it comes to health, most of the outcomes we admire later in life are not the result of extreme effort or dramatic sacrifice. They come from small, repeatable habits done over many years. This is hard to appreciate when you are younger because it is difficult to imagine yourself decades into the future. I share examples from health, business, athletics, and my own experience with rock climbing to explain how progress often feels slow or even invisible for long stretches of time. Many people quit right before momentum builds. Showing up does not mean performing at your best every time. It means continuing even when progress stalls, motivation fades, or results feel disappointing. When you stop, you restart. You do not disappear for years. I also share a client story about meal preparation and how consistency turned something he believed was impossible into a simple, automatic habit. Health habits work the same way. You go to the gym. You get on the bike. You climb. You cook. You do it even when you do not feel like it. Over time, the friction fades and the habit takes over. This episode is a reminder that long-term health is not built through intensity. It is built through persistence. -------------------------- Main Website:  https://www.drashori.com Subscribe to my free Healthy Aging newsletter: https://newsletter.drashori.com/  Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DrAshoriMD Join me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrAshoriMD --------------------------- If you are looking for a customized health plan to help you navigate your health, book a 1-hour paid session with me. Is Intermittent Fasting Really the Secret to Health?

Most of the benefits people credit to fasting come from fewer calories. In this episode, I answer a question I get often from clients about intermittent fasting. I review the research, look at the data, and share how I personally think about fasting from a health coaching perspective. Intermittent fasting does not have one strict definition. Simply not eating overnight already counts. Many people overlook this, even though late-night and early-morning eating is very common and often tied to blood sugar instability. I explain why much of the benefit attributed to fasting comes down to calorie restriction rather than the fasting window itself. When calories are equal, the metabolic and cardiovascular outcomes are usually the same, whether someone fasts or not. That said, I do think fasting can be useful. Giving the body a break from constant eating can support gut health, oral health, brain health, and overall metabolic regulation. I also share why I personally like fasting as a way to reduce decision fatigue in a world filled with constant food choices. I talk about how pre-made decisions around food, caffeine, alcohol, and eating times can simplify life and reduce stress. Fasting becomes less about willpower and more about structure. Most importantly, I emphasize experimentation. Some people feel great with a fasting window. Others do not. Your body is the final judge. This episode is about practicality, flexibility, and choosing an approach that supports healthy aging without unnecessary rules or extremes. My Simple Grocery Philosophy for Eating Better on Less

A simpler grocery strategy saves money and improves health. In this episode, I share my personal approach to grocery shopping, eating at home, and keeping food simple. This is not a strict diet plan or a list of trendy superfoods. It is a practical way of eating that saves money and supports long-term health. I talk about why bulk foods like potatoes, onions, beans, and rice form a strong nutritional foundation. With just a few staple items, most of your nutritional needs can be met without relying on expensive or heavily marketed foods. I also explain why shopping seasonally matters, how farmers markets can show you what is truly in season, and why local foods tend to be cheaper and require fewer chemicals. Many foods we are told to prioritize on social media are expensive, shipped long distances, and not nearly as essential as they are made out to be. We also discuss bulk grocery stores, restaurant supply stores, and CSA boxes as practical ways to lower food costs. Root vegetables, proper storage, freezing, and basic food preservation go a long way in reducing waste and grocery bills. This episode is about sustainability, not perfection. Eating in a way that you can maintain financially and practically is far more important than chasing an idealized version of healthy eating. At the end, I invite you to share how you approach grocery shopping and saving money on food, and I preview a future episode on organic versus conventional produce. Lonely or Just Alone? The Difference That Changes Everything

You can be surrounded by people and still feel deeply lonely. In this episode, I record a quiet reflection while walking through a park in Bend, Oregon. I notice people connecting in small ways, waving, walking dogs, sharing space. It sparks a conversation about loneliness, and how different it is from simply being alone. Being alone can be a chapter of life. A breakup. Loss. Aging. A season where more responsibility falls on you and there is less time or energy for deep social connection. That does not automatically mean loneliness. Loneliness often comes from feeling separate. From believing we are fundamentally different from the people around us. This can happen because of political beliefs, religious views, personal values, or even inside long-term relationships. Many people feel lonely while partnered, married, or surrounded by others. The issue is not proximity. It is perceived disconnection. In this episode, I talk about how small moments of connection matter. Saying hello. Smiling. Helping someone else. Allowing others to be different without seeing that difference as a threat. I also talk about aging, identity, and why developing a grounded sense of self while in relationship may be one of the most protective things we can do for our emotional health. This is a gentle conversation about kindness, openness, and how loneliness can soften when we stop seeing ourselves as separate from the world around us. ----------------------------- Main Website:  https://www.drashori.com Subscribe to my free Healthy Aging newsletter: https://newsletter.drashori.com/  Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DrAshoriMD Join me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrAshoriMD --------------------------- If you are looking for a guide to help you navigate your health, book a 1-hour paid session with me. Why My View of Healthcare Changed Over Time

My approach to healthcare has changed a lot over the years. In this episode, I talk through what shaped it and why it works better for my patients and coaching clients. My approach to healthcare has changed a lot in the past few years. I used to think the goal was to collect more data, order more tests, and be as thorough as possible every time. Over time, I realized that people do better when we simplify. When we slow down. When we focus on the small daily choices that actually move their health forward. In this episode, I talk through how I practice medicine now and how I guide my coaching clients. I explain why I focus on long-term habits, why I avoid fear-based health decisions, and why clarity matters more than the number of tests on a lab panel. I also share how I help people separate real health improvements from all the noise online. My goal is to offer a calmer and more practical way of thinking about health. I want you to understand your body, make fewer reactive decisions, and build a plan that feels sustainable. Top 5 Health Misconceptions I Fix In My Practice

People absorb so much health information that it becomes hard to tell what is true. In this episode, I break down the five misconceptions I correct most often. I see the same health misconceptions over and over in my coaching calls and medical visits. They are not silly mistakes. They are understandable confusions that come from mixed messages, outdated advice, and overly complicated online content. I wanted to record an episode that clears up the most common ones. In this episode, I talk through the top five misconceptions I see most often. I explain where each one comes from, why it sounds believable, and what the evidence actually shows. I also share how these misunderstandings affect people's health decisions, their stress levels, and the progress they make. My goal is to make things easier. The Simple Way I Choose Screening Tests For Patients

People get overwhelmed by long lists of screening tests. In this episode, I explain how I decide what actually matters. People ask me all the time which screening tests they should get. Most of the confusion comes from long lists online or mixed messages from different doctors. I want to simplify this. Screening should be clear, predictable, and tied to real health outcomes. In this episode, I explain how I think about screening and why more testing is not always better. I talk about the difference between a test that finds disease early and a test that simply creates anxiety. I also share the framework I use with my own patients and coaching clients so they understand which tests matter at each age. I walk through the most common screening categories. These include cancer screening, metabolic health, cardiovascular risk, bone health, and a few specialty tests people often ask about. I also explain when a test adds value and when it is unlikely to change anything about your long-term health. My goal is to help you spend less time confused and more time confident in your health decisions. Why I Built My Own Direct Primary Care (DPC) Practice And What I Learned

I built my DPC practice because I wanted medicine to feel human again. In this episode, I talk honestly about what worked and what almost broke me. Starting my DPC practice was one of the most meaningful decisions of my career. I reached a point in traditional medicine where I felt rushed, boxed in, and unable to give patients the time they deserved. I wanted a model where I could slow down, listen, and actually help people make real progress. In this episode, I talk about how my DPC practice started and the parts nobody warned me about. I share what it felt like to leave a stable system, how long it took to feel comfortable, and the unexpected challenges that came with running my own clinic. I also talk about the moments that reminded me why I made the switch in the first place. My goal is simple. I want doctors, patients, and anyone curious about DPC to understand what this model offers and what it demands. It is not for everyone. But if you want more control over how you practice and more connection with your patients, DPC is worth understanding in a deeper way. Why You Wake Up At 2 A.M. And How To Fix It

Most middle-of-the-night suffering comes from one reflex thought pattern. This episode explains how to break it. Many people wake up at 2 a.m. and think something is wrong with their body. I used to think the same thing. What I share in this episode is a simple idea that changed how I understand nighttime wakeups. The body is usually fine. The panic is what keeps us awake. In this episode, I talk about why these middle-of-the-night wakeups happen and why they feel so intense. I explain what behavioral sleep medicine teaches, which is that the brain learns patterns over time. If the bed becomes linked with stress, the brain starts firing alarms at night. I walk through the exact steps I teach my coaching clients. I show how to break the bed-equals-stress loop and how to respond in a calmer way when a wakeup happens. I also share what to do when you are lying there wide awake and your mind is spiraling into "I am going to be exhausted tomorrow." My goal in this episode is simple. I want you to understand that these nighttime wakeups are normal. And once you stop treating them like emergencies, sleep comes back on its own. The Truth About Popular Supplements in Your 30s and 40s

Most supplements do not fix the root problem. But habits do. Supplements are tools, not magic - they are no different than prescription medications. In this episode, I explain how I decide when a supplement makes sense and when it is a distraction. I start with the big picture, nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, and support. I then review common products people ask me about. Creatine helps with strength and lean mass if you are training. Omega-3 can help if you rarely eat fish. Vitamin D can help if you are low on a blood test. B12 matters if you follow a vegan or near-vegan diet. Protein powders are food, not medicine, and can be convenient. Psyllium fiber helps with LDL and satiety. I also cover what I usually skip, fat burners, greens powders as meal replacements, expensive proprietary blends, and most "hormone" boosters. I share simple rules for buying, third-party testing, clear dosing, no miracle claims, realistic timelines, and tracking your response. The aim is better health with fewer wasted dollars. Belly Fat - Why it Exists & How to Lose it

In this episode, I explain what we mean by belly fat and why the type of fat matters. I cover the difference between subcutaneous fat and visceral fat, the role of bloating, posture, and genetics, and when we should worry. I then lay out a practical plan, built for busy adults in their 30s to 50s. We start with food quality, more fiber, fewer refined flours and sugary drinks, and steady protein. We add daily movement, walks after meals, and two to three days of strength training to build muscle and improve insulin sensitivity. We account for hormones, from menopause changes to how men convert testosterone to estrogen, and we support this with sleep and stress routines that you can maintain. The goal is a smaller waist and a stronger body, with fewer years spent feeling unwell. No fads. CAC Score Explained, When It Helps, When It Hurts - The Coronary Calcium Score

In this episode, I examine the coronary artery calcium score (CAC) and its role in assessing heart health amid concerns of over-reliance on the test as we near 2025. I highlight its limitations, including that a zero score doesn't rule out cardiovascular risks, while a high score can indicate accelerated plaque formation. I stress the importance of using CAC tests for those at moderate risk based on cholesterol levels and family history, rather than as a sole determinant for heart disease management. Ultimately, I encourage listeners to view CAC scores within a broader context of overall health data for informed decisions regarding cardiovascular risk.   Website and Health Coaching:  https://www.drashori.com Subscribe to my free Healthy Aging newsletter: https://newsletter.drashori.com/  Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DrAshoriMD Join me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrAshoriMD --------------------------- If you are looking for a guide to help you navigate your health, book a 1-hour paid session with me. How To Know Your Real Heart Risk, Not Just Cholesterol

In this episode, I explore the crucial subject of heart disease risk assessment and prevention in my health coaching practice. I highlight the prevalence of cardiovascular disease, particularly atherocerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), and the impact of lifestyle choices such as physical activity, sleep quality, and diet on risk levels. I address the effects of alcohol and smoking, emphasizing the importance of family history and health indicators like blood pressure and cholesterol. I introduce modern testing methods that reveal significant insights into cardiovascular health and discuss the mechanics of cholesterol's role in heart disease. Preventive strategies, including lifestyle optimization and potential medication options, are outlined, reinforcing the importance of proactive risk management in reducing heart disease incidence and enhancing quality of life. 10 Ways to Lower Your Cholesterol - Substack Article   Website and Health Coaching:  https://www.drashori.com Subscribe to my free Healthy Aging newsletter: https://newsletter.drashori.com/  Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DrAshoriMD Join me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrAshoriMD --------------------------- If you are looking for a guide to help you navigate your health, book a 1-hour paid session with me. GLP-1s Explained: Why They Reduce "Food Noise"

In this episode I explain how GLP-1 medicines work and why they help some people lose weight. I clarify my coaching role and what I do not do. I break down the two main effects I see clinically: slower gut transit that reduces appetite and central effects that quiet cravings or "food noise." I explain why food drive varies widely between people, why these drugs don't speed metabolism or change nutrient absorption in a meaningful way, and why most of the benefit comes from lower calorie intake. I address the "free will" myth and reframe GLP-1s as a tool, not a shortcut. If you understand your own hunger circuitry, you can design habits that work whether you use medication or not. Why Am I So Tired When My Labs Are "Normal"?

In this episode I explain why you can feel exhausted even when your labs look "normal." I show you how I define fatigue with each client, how I track symptoms and sleep, and how I separate central fatigue (brain-driven) from peripheral fatigue (body-driven). I walk through common drivers I see in practice, including poor sleep quality, too much or too little training, low muscle mass, nutrition gaps, and insulin resistance even with a normal A1C. I also explain why chasing a single diagnosis rarely helps. My approach is stepwise and habit based. We aim to move fatigue from a 9 out of 10 down over time so you get your days back.
