Someone once said that ten out of ten people die, but we all live forever. The difference is eternal destinations. Yesterday’s news of the tragic death of basketball superstar, Kobe Bryant, shocked millions as it often does when someone famous dies. It reminds me of Psalm 90:12, a request for God to “teach us to number our days that we might gain a heart of wisdom.” Everybody dies, so why don’t we seem to believe it deep down? There is no greater challenge facing man then the reality of his own mortality.  Hebrews 9:27 tells us it is appointed for a man to die once and then be judged.  Death in the physical realm is inevitable; where a man's souls goes after death is the real issue of eternal importance. Born-again Christians, if we believe the promises of God, should not fear death...we should actually welcome it.  But we should also have a sense of urgency about death for those who have not placed their faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Rarely does outright persecution just happen out of the blue. It usually seeps in gradually, starting with free people not being diligent and thinking the persecution of another individual or institution is none of their concern. Once the proponents of persecution see that we lack the courage to stand up for others they naturally assume we will lack the backbone to stand up for ourselves, and they begin to pick away at our freedoms, breaking down our resistance. In every institution in our nation we are seeing Bible-believing Christians marginalized and attacked. From education to media to government itself, witnessed by the unconstitutional ordinance the City of De Pere tried to impose on local churches, the enemy is testing our will and commitment to God. Sadly, as I personally witnessed here in De Pere, there are some churches that decide to sit the battle out letting the other 5 brave churches who stood with us do all the fighting. While God is a God of order, Satan is a master of deception, confusion and chaos.
