Ethical Volunteer Travel: What Actually Helps —Podcast Episode #47

Volunteer travel can be life-changing—or unethical—depending on who leads, who benefits, and what’s really happening on the ground. In this episode, I’m joined by Kimberly Haley Coleman, founder of Globe Aware, to unpack what ethical short-term service trips look like after 25 years in the field. We talk about how projects are selected by local communities, what a one-week “turnkey” service experience includes, the difference between “hard power” and “soft power,” and the practical tradeoffs around cost, sustainability, and dignity. If you’ve been curious about traveling with purpose—without the savior complex—this conversation will sharpen your lens.In this episode, we cover:What Globe Aware is and why it was founded (accidentally)Why 6-night / ~7-day service trips exist—and who they’re built forHow projects are chosen (local agency, safety, sustainability criteria)Ethical tourism vs exploitative voluntourism: what to watch forWhy “we’re not here to save anyone” is a core principleHow service creates deeper cultural connection than typical tourismThe reality of cost, logistics, and why volunteers often pay to serveCarbon footprint vs impact: how to think about “making the trip count”What trips include (service hours + cultural excursions + reflection)Repeat volunteers, destination choice, and examples of real projectsFind Out How You Can Get Involved Here!⏱ TIMESTAMPED HIGHLIGHTS:00:03:14 — Why Globe Aware started (finding meaningful short-term service was “almost impossible”)00:04:17 — The model: six-night service projects in 26 countries00:04:28 — Finishable, hands-on projects (floors/homes/stoves examples)00:04:49 — “We are not swooping in to save them”: equal partners, local materials00:05:45 — What makes a country a fit: safety, grassroots orgs, no outbreaks/war00:07:30 — Why service changes you: gratitude, perspective, “resetting defaults”00:09:11 — Why one week: realistic time off for working people (vs Peace Corps)00:12:01 — Hard power vs soft power: what “showing up” does over time00:13:16 — Carbon footprint: acknowledge it, then “make it worthwhile”00:36:16 — Ethical tourism basics: local agency, dignity, and avoiding harmYou can also find a video of this podcast on YouTube if you’d rather watch there 😃Ready to Plan Your Own Move?My goal is to help you make your dream of moving abroad a reality. I Didn’t Know This About US Hospital Bills - Podcast Episode #46

In this episode of Expat on a Budget, I sit down with international tax lawyer and long-time expat Bobby Casey, who’s built a life across multiple countries. We start with how a “test run” abroad led him from Estonia to Latvia, and how he now rotates between home bases in Mexico, Latvia, and the U.S.But the heart of this conversation is U.S. healthcare—and why it’s a major factor in why so many Americans consider leaving. Bobby breaks down what most people misunderstand about medical bills, insurance, payment plans, and how hospitals bill (and negotiate). We also talk about getting care abroad, when he would return to the U.S. for treatment, and how to think about healthcare as part of a broader “live anywhere” strategy. If you’re even quietly considering a move abroad—especially if healthcare costs are part of the equation—this episode will give you a new lens on what’s possible. In this episode, we cover:Why US healthcare costs are a top reason Americans consider leaving the USHow hospital billing works (and what most people misunderstand about medical bills)The reality of living without US health insurance—and what that does and doesn’t meanNegotiating medical bills and how payment plans can change the outcomeWhen it can make sense to get care outside the US (and when you might still return)How “medical tourism” fits into an expat plan for routine and elective proceduresThe mindset shift from “moving abroad once” to building multiple home basesA quick look at residency abroad (Mexico/Europe) and why some places are easier than othersThe practical planning layer: healthcare + residency + lifestyle design working togetherIf you’re in the US (or anywhere) doing the math—healthcare, housing, day-to-day costs—and wondering whether there’s a smarter way to build a life with more stability and choices, this episode will help you see the options more clearly. It’s practical, honest, and focused on what you can actually do next—whether you’re ready to move or just starting to explore.Find Bobby Casey’s Digital Services for Nomads Here⏱ TIMESTAMPED HIGHLIGHTS:00:00:17 — Riga, Latvia was the place they really liked.00:00:22 — Estonia was meant to be a one-year “test run” abroad.00:00:34 — They returned to North Carolina with the plan to sell everything.00:00:44 — After liquidating, they moved back to Latvia (how Latvia happened).00:02:25 — Bobby explains who he helps: location-independent entrepreneurs/freelancers abroad.00:03:30 — His company (BusinessAnywhere) handles formation, banking, mailbox, bookkeeping, filings, etc.00:04:19 — He’s based in Playa del Carmen, Mexico (winter home).00:05:13 — His three home bases: Mexico, Latvia, and North Carolina.00:11:13 — US citizens have citizenship-based taxation: tax residency no matter where they live.00:14:35 — Residency difference: Latin America often just wants proof of funds; Europe usually requires a specific reason. You can also find a video of this podcast on YouTube if you’d rather watch there 😃Ready to Plan Your Own Move?My goal is to help you make your dream of moving abroad a reality. Most of my guests have traded their old lives for a new home in a specific country. But today’s guest didn’t just pick a new home—he built a portfolio of them.In this episode, I’m bringing you a conversation that redefines what it means to be an expat. I sat down with Benjamin Hies, a German entrepreneur and a true global citizen who didn’t just move abroad, he diversified his entire life.Benjamin currently holds six different residencies (including Dubai, Cyprus, and Thailand). Have you ever considered moving to a country that isn’t on the typical “Digital Nomad Top 10” list? This week, we are traveling to the heart of South America to visit Paraguay.I sat down with Jessica, a former Oregon resident who, along with her husband and three dogs, took the leap to rural Paraguay in 2023. Why? Mylan (the manufacturer) raised prices without any significant changes to the product.* Daraprim: A decades-old medication used to treat toxoplasmosis, a parasitic infection. In 2015, the price of Daraprim increased overnight from $13.50 per pill to $750 per pill (a 5,000% increase). Why? Turing Pharmaceuticals, led by Martin Shkreli, acquired the drug and exploited its monopoly status, as no generic alternatives were available in the U.S.* Albuterol Inhalers for asthma used to cost about $15–$20, but prices have risen to $50–$100 or more per inhaler.* Doxycycline the antibiotic: The price for a bottle of 500 tablets rose from $20 in 2013 to over $1,800 in 2014.1. Countries in Europe with Fully Socialized Healthcare SystemsIn these countries, healthcare is predominantly provided and funded by the government, often referred to as the Beveridge Model:* United Kingdom (UK):* The National Health Service (NHS) provides healthcare that is free at the point of use, funded through taxation.* Most healthcare providers work for the government, though some private options exist.* Norway:* The public healthcare system is funded by taxes and covers nearly all medical expenses.* Hospitals and healthcare providers are predominantly owned and operated by the government.* Sweden:* Healthcare is tax-funded and administered by regional authorities, with minimal out-of-pocket costs for patients.* Most healthcare services are provided by public institutions.* Denmark:* Healthcare is funded through taxes and provided by publicly-owned hospitals and clinics.* Primary care doctors act as gatekeepers for specialized treatment.* Finland:* Healthcare is tax-funded, with services provided by municipalities.* Public hospitals dominate the system, and healthcare is free or very low-cost for residents.* Iceland:* Healthcare is funded through taxation, with most services provided by the government.* Patients pay minimal fees for prescriptions and some outpatient services.2. Countries with Universal Healthcare Funded by InsuranceThese countries have universal healthcare systems funded through compulsory health insurance (a Bismarck Model), heavily regulated by the government to ensure affordability and access:* Germany:* Healthcare is funded through a mix of statutory health insurance (SHI) and private insurance.* SHI is mandatory and funded by payroll taxes, covering most residents.* France:* Universal healthcare is funded through a mix of public health insurance and taxes.* Most costs are covered by the national system, and private insurance is common for supplemental coverage.* Belgium:* Healthcare is funded through mandatory health insurance, which is subsidized by taxes.* Most residents are covered through public health insurance funds.* Netherlands:* Residents are required to purchase health insurance from private companies, but the government regulates prices and provides subsidies.* Universal coverage is achieved through this system.* Austria:* Healthcare is funded through social health insurance contributions, which are mandatory for most workers.* The government plays a strong regulatory role.* Switzerland:* Similar to the Netherlands, health insurance is mandatory, and the government ensures it is affordable by providing subsidies based on income.* Healthcare providers are a mix of public and private entities.* Luxembourg:* Healthcare is funded through mandatory health insurance and government contributions.* Patients can access both public and private providers.3. Countries with Mixed ModelsSome countries blend socialized medicine and insurance-based systems, ensuring universal coverage while allowing private healthcare options to coexist:* Italy:* The Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN) provides universal healthcare funded through taxes, with minimal or no out-of-pocket costs for most services.* Private providers also exist, but most Italians rely on the public system.* Spain:* Healthcare is tax-funded and universal, with services provided primarily by the public sector.* Private providers are available for those who choose supplemental insurance.* Portugal:* Healthcare is primarily funded through taxation, with universal access for residents.* Private healthcare exists for those who prefer it.* Greece:* The public healthcare system (ESY) provides universal access funded through taxes and social insurance.* Private healthcare providers are also common.* Ireland:* Ireland has a public healthcare system funded by taxation, but many residents purchase private insurance to access faster care or private hospitals.4. Eastern European CountriesMost Eastern European countries also provide universal healthcare, though the quality and funding levels can vary. These systems are generally tax-funded, with some out-of-pocket costs or supplementary private insurance:* Poland: Universal healthcare funded through the National Health Fund (NFZ).* Czech Republic: Mandatory health insurance ensures universal coverage.* Hungary: Universal healthcare funded by taxation and social insurance.* Slovakia: Universal coverage through mandatory health insurance.* Romania: Universal healthcare funded through taxes, though private insurance is growing.* Bulgaria: Universal coverage funded by mandatory health insurance and taxes.*this block (#’s 1 - 4 re: healthcare in Europe information is from ChatGPT Get full access to Expat on a Budget at expatonabudget.substack.com/subscribe

Podcast Ep 010: Greek Vacation Resources

—For the next two weeks I’ll post my travelogue on Substack (and newsletter). For now, please check out my list of resources below. If you want to see this article, click here. Otherwise, check out the transcript tab :) Resources:* Off season travel in Greece.* Best neighborhoods to stay in Athens.* Athens solo travel (as a single woman).* Athens solo travel with an itinerary.* Athens neighborhoods - another guide.* Is Athens safe for a solo female traveler?* Island Information from Santorini Dave - how to get from island to island, places to visit and fantastic overall advice about Greece!* Twenty beautiful white villages in Greece.* The most beautiful towns in Greece.* 47 of the most beautiful Greek Islands.* Ten islands to visit instead of Santorini.* Ten days in Greece - itinerary. (This is the one I used and imo it was far too pricey.)* The towns of Santorini guide.* Santorini map.* 14 things to do in Santorini.* Best sunset viewing spots in Santorini (I should have read this one prior to spending 3 hours looking for a spot)* Milos - 12 things to do.* Where to stay in Crete.* How to get from Heraklion to Chania in Crete.* Chania youtube video.* Pack for a Crete road trip.* Guide to driving in Crete.* Crete car rental booking.* Greek ferries guide - super helpful!* To book your ferries in advance. * Ferry Scanner or Ferry Hopper - I used Ferry Hopper and love their app which shows you in real time where your ferry is. While I would recommend this during the summer/high season, I found it more of a hinderance during shoulder season. A well-traveled couple I met suggested purchasing your ticket for your next destination when you arrive in the new port. So for example once you arrive in Mykonos, purchase your ticket for Paros if you’re going there next.* Another ferry option.* Welcome Pickups App - to book ahead for airport pick up or drop off.* Bounce Luggage Storage App - safe and affordable places to store your luggage.*** This contains a few affiliate links. Podcast Ep003: If You Don't Try... You'll Never Know.

This episode is an encouragement episode about doing the thing (or things) you’ve always wanted to do so you have no (or less) regrets. I use my personal examples and real life examples from a close friend and people in my family. While several of the examples are about travel, others are about following dreams and passions (like ceramics). This philosophy can be applied throughout life in everything you do. If you never try, you’ll never know if it’s something you will love or something that’s just not right for you. And the beauty of it? Both are okay!I’m keeping these short so you can easily fit an episode into your busy day!You can find the full transcript for this episode above on the 3rd “transcript” tab!Thank you so much for going on this adventure with me!I'd love your support through a (free) subscription to get my weekly articles and podcast delivered to your inbox or a like or a comment! For short, how-to, personal tidbits and informational vids on living in Portugal you can find me on TikTok.For photos of Portugal and travels (including vanlife) please follow on instagram. My old/er podcast (live your dream and how to travel full time) is on my website.I welcome reader interaction so if you have questions or just want to say hi, please do!
