We dive into key takeaways on how mindfulness can help regulate emotions, increase self-awareness, and cultivate gratitude. Erin also explains that mindfulness is about being present with all emotions, not just the joyful ones, and offers simple practices to retrain the brain for positivity. EP 76: Breaking Free from the 9-to-5: Building a Life that Aligns with Your True Self w/ Kali Tougas

In this episode, my good friend Kali Tougas is back!  Kali's been on a journey to freedom of her own.  She recently sold her house and transitioned to a nomadic lifestyle in a 40-foot fifth-wheel RV with her family (including 4 dogs). She shares her reasons for making such a bold move—like getting out of debt and seeking a simpler life—and the challenges that came with downsizing and packing up a 2700 sq. ft. home in just three months. We also talk about the adjustments to RV life, with unexpected perks like never having to mow the lawn again!   A big part of our conversation revolves around human design and how understanding it has transformed both of our relationships with our children. We explore how different energy types—manifesters, generators, and projectors—can shape communication and parenting approaches. Emotional intelligence comes up as well, and we both emphasize the importance of allowing emotions to be expressed without judgment, for ourselves and for our kids.   I also share my own experience of finding a job that aligns with my human design, which has given me the flexibility to manage my energy and schedule in a way that feels right. Both of us agree on the value of letting go of societal conditioning and labels, embracing a more fluid and authentic approach to life.    Run your very own Human Design Chart here 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼 https://www.kalitougasservices.com/human-design and join Kali and I in the Collective    Experience Membership where you can sample all kinds of different modalities (like EFT tapping, art therapy, Human Design, even Astrology!).  Check it out here 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼 https://www.collectiveexperience.co/home?r_done=1 Use the coupon code 'FIRE' to save 20% on membership!

EP 73: Owning Your Financial Literacy: Asking the Right Money Questions w/ Colleen Gillam

What a great conversation with Colleen Gillam, a financial planner with over 15 years of experience. We talked about how she got into the industry after studying psychology, and how that psychology background has been so valuable in helping her clients navigate the emotional side of money. Colleen shared some really insightful perspectives on the importance of going through market cycles and downturns to truly understand the ups and downs of investing. She also talked about the need for more women to get involved in financial planning, as it's still a male-dominated field. I loved Colleen's emphasis on simplifying money and not making it overly complicated. Things like ditching the "budget" mentality and instead focusing on a "spending plan" where every dollar has a job. And how money is just a tool - it's not inherently good or bad, it's how we use it that matters. Colleen and I also discussed the importance of finding a financial planner or advisor that's truly a partner, someone who will walk alongside you and explain things in a way that makes sense, rather than just trying to sell you products. It's all about empowering you to take control of your own financial future. If Colleen's message resonates with you and you'd like to connect with her, you can find her at the links below. And be sure to check out my Vote With Your Dollars Masterclass to build your investing confidence! At the end of the day, freedom is what it's all about - being able to do what you want, with who you want, when you want. That's the true power of taking control of your money. I hope this episode has inspired you to start that journey, if you haven't already. Onwards and upwards! EP 63: I got a JOB!

In today's episode, I have some personal updates to share. I've been retired for nearly four years, but my retirement isn't traditional. My definition of retirement is about having the freedom to work on projects I love and choosing what I want to do at any moment.   I've never been 'anti-job'. While the 9-to-5 grind isn't for everyone, many people thrive in that setting, and that's okay. After many years in a corporate job, I realized it was exhausting me. It wasn't until a layoff that I understood how to best use my energy and live a life of freedom and choice. Today, I want to share more about that journey with you, and how circumstances change on this journey we call life.   You can find more of my insights and tools to carve your own path at www.wendyverwey.com. I offer personalized support to help you align your life with your passions and strengths. Whether you're looking to make a career change or simply want to feel more fulfilled in your daily life, I'm here to guide you every step of the way. EP 61: Awkward Dinner Conversations with Mr & Mrs CEO w/ Kimberley Hiebert

In this week's episode, I chat with Kimberley Hibert, half of Mr. & Mrs. CEO.   In partnership with her husband Darren, the couple refer to themselves as 'serial entrepreneurs' who have built several businesses together over the decades of their marriage. As you'll hear, working with family brings its own set of complex dynamics. Kimberley shares her backstory of overcoming early financial struggles thanks to her mom's "anything is possible" attitude. She started small with a popcorn business from home while on maternity leave. Darren built his experience working in the family business from a young age. As their ventures grew, the couple's daughters and sons joined them. Managing those family-employee relationships introduced messy conflicts.  Kimberley and Darren don't sugarcoat the very real family tensions that arise when relatives work together. But through open communication and self-work, they've made progress. Their book Awkward Family Dinners shares hard-won wisdom on setting boundaries, managing expectations, and more. This candid glimpse inside their journey reveals why family businesses need a different playbook. Tune in to pick up practical strategies for nurturing both family ties and financial success. You'll also identify areas to reflect on in your own family relationships and leadership.    To order the book, click here:  https://amzn.to/4b1yOcE To find out more about Kimberley, follow her links below:   @kimberley.hiebert @darren.hiebert www.mr-mrs-ceo.com And if you're interested in the My Doh app I mentioned in the episode, check out my referral link here:  https://mydoh.onelink.me/YyJv/mlotfgod (I believe it's only available in Canada at this time).

EP 58: Momma Has Goals w/ Kelsey Smith

After the complicated delivery of her first son, Kelsey had the realization that while she had accomplished many "goals", they weren't goals that brought her fulfillment. As she woke up from surgery she wondered if she hadn't woken up, what story would she leave behind? Would her children know what brought her joy? What she stood for? This experience led Kelsey to her own journey of fulfillment and self-discovery where she had the massive realization that this feeling was far too common for mothers all over the world. Kelsey knew she needed to normalize moms having big dreams + making their own fulfillment a priority, so she created a space that helped women and mothers do just that. EP 57: True Hourly Wage Revisited

In this episode, we'll discuss the concept of your true hourly wage and why it's important to know. We'll also provide some tips on how to calculate your true hourly wage and use it to make better financial decisions.   What Is Your True Hourly Wage? Your true hourly wage is the amount of money you earn per hour after you subtract all of your work-related expenses, such as transportation, clothing, and meals. Many people only consider their hourly wage or salary when calculating their earnings, but this can be misleading. By factoring in your work-related expenses, you can get a more accurate picture of your true earnings and how much your time is really worth.   Why Does Your True Hourly Wage Matter?   Knowing your true hourly wage can help you make better financial decisions, such as whether to take on extra work or overtime. It can also help you determine whether certain expenses, such as eating out or buying a new outfit for work, are really worth the cost. By understanding the true value of your time, you can prioritize your spending and focus on what really matters to you.   How to Calculate Your True Hourly Wage   To calculate your true hourly wage, start by adding up all of your work-related expenses for a given period, such as a week or a month. Next, subtract this amount from your total earnings for that period to get your true earnings. Finally, divide your true earnings by the number of hours you worked during that period to get your true hourly wage. Download the True Hourly Wage Calculator to simplify this part!   Tips for Using Your True Hourly Wage to Make Better Financial Decisions   Once you know your true hourly wage, you can use it to prioritize your spending and focus on what really matters to you. Consider using your true hourly wage to set financial goals, such as saving for a vacation or paying off debt. You can also use it to determine whether certain expenses are really worth the cost, such as eating out or buying a new outfit for work.   As always, if you've got questions or comments on anything covered in the podcast, reach out at [email protected]

EP 55: Become the CEO of your life with Amy Traugh

Becoming the CEO of your LIFE, with Amy Traugh I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Amy Traugh, author of the new book "The CEO Method". Our conversation covered some profound realizations Amy had during the pandemic about prioritizing fulfillment over societal expectations. Amy shared how watching her kids play made her recognize she was missing out on life by rigidly working 40 hours a week. This motivated her to start living more in the present moment rather than constantly planning for the future. As a self-described "box checker", Amy achieved all the conventional markers of success but still felt unfulfilled. She went on a journey of self-reflection and took risky actions to bet on herself to create a business aligned with her values. Writing her book "The CEO Method" was scary for Amy but she committed publicly to hold herself accountable. Her book helps entrepreneurs design businesses around their lives through establishing clarity, systems, and overcoming fears. Amy now finds freedom in living life on her own terms and feeling proud of listening to her inner voice. It was inspiring to hear her perspective on moving from conventional success to a deeply fulfilling life. I encourage you to check out Amy's book and her framework for designing a purpose-driven business you love.   Free Gift: amytraugh.com/freebook Instagram: https://instagram.com/amytraugh Podcast: The Motivated CEO Podcast amytraugh.com/podcast

EP 54: Homeschooling: How I Gave My Son the Gift of Freedom

Friends, in this solo episode I'm getting vulnerable and sharing what's been happening with my son and our recent decision to pull him out of school to homeschool. I discuss the health issues he's been facing, vomiting daily with no identifiable cause, and how we eventually realized it seems to stem from anxiety related to the school environment. I talk about why we decided homeschooling is the best path forward right now - to help him regain confidence, settle his nervous system, and discover his interests outside of traditional school. I share my approach to facilitating his learning rather than recreating a classroom at home. While uncertain how it will unfold, I'm excited to nurture his self-directed curiosity and expose him to learning from daily life. Ultimately, this ties into my broader message of living life on your own terms. I aim to model freedom for my children, creating space to thrive as individuals. If you're a fellow homeschooling parent, I welcome your tips and encouragement as we embark on this journey. To me, freedom means allowing my kids to learn in the best way for them.

Side hustles are as diverse as our unique talents, and there's no silver bullet that works for everyone.   In this episode, I walk you through my portfolio career, starting from blogging about hometown discoveries to exploring options trading. Each venture, each side hustle, has been a stepping stone in my quest to create a life where work seamlessly blends with passion.   You'll hear intriguing anecdotes, like the story of Christina Gawlick making money selling pictures of feet. It's a testament to the fact that there's no universal formula for success in the side hustle universe. Before diving in, understanding yourself is key.   I open up about my experiences with Airbnb hosting, turning my home into a source of income, and discuss the flexibility of platforms like Rover.com for dog sitting. These stories showcase the vast array of opportunities available when you think outside the box.   The core theme throughout is my commitment to work that doesn't feel like work. I encourage you to discover your unique strengths and passions. Remember, finding the perfect side hustle is an inside job.   Toward the end, I introduce my Clarity Workshop—a two-hour session designed to help you explore potential side hustles tailored to your life. It's about asking the right questions, seeking inspiration, and finding accountability.   If you've been on the quest for the ideal side hustle or want to explore unconventional career paths, this episode is for you. Join me on this journey of breaking free from the conventional, where work doesn't have to feel like work.   *Fire Yourself First* is not just a podcast; it's our journey towards finding fulfillment in work and life. So, my friends, tune in, get inspired, and let's craft lives that align with our passions. Because remember, work doesn't have to feel like work.  Enjoy the episode, and check out www.wendyverwey.com for links to all the resources!

EP 41: Lessons after 3 years of retirement

This week I celebrated THREE YEARS of retirement from the corporate world! In this solo episode, I talk about my last day of work and what that felt like (spoiler alert - it was pretty anticlimactic…) I've had a lot of time to reflect in the last 3 years about who I am, what I want, why I want it and most of all - HOW TO GET IT. Life really is a journey and it took this long to put into words what it is I want in my life and what I hope to provide to others. I talk all the time about FREEDOM, but it's not necessarily money freedom, or freedom from a job.  Really, it's about freedom from STRESS in all its forms. Stress serves a purpose in the world, but we don't have to hold onto it forever.  Heck, some of it isn't even ours! So in this episode, I invite you to look at the ways stress shows up in your life.  And if you want more, check out these previous episodes that really align with the theme…   EP 37 with Natalie Barnett EP 33 Speed Limit 45 with Geta   Or download my ebook "How to Say No Without Sounding Like An A-Hole"  for more free inspiration. EP 36: Stop 'Shoulding' on Yourself with Amanda Clark

Please welcome the always inspiring Amanda Clark to this week's episode of FIRE Yourself First. Amanda was an 18-year-old teen pregnancy statistic who lost herself in motherhood + wore taking care of everyone else like a badge of honor.

She spent a lot of time 'shoulding' all over herself, fearing judgment, and believed the hot mess mom vibe society deemed normal.  She finally got tired of wondering if this was all there is to life + shifted herself and her life. As a coach, Amanda helps moms empower themselves through The Breathwork Method so that they create lives they love with kids in tow! Today's conversation was a wild ride, covering the gamut of not only DOING the things that light you up, but also BEING the example of that for our kids. We looked at the many paths to SUCCESS and how no one seems to be doing it 'right'.  We're really all figuring life out as we go! We even touched on the future of education and what that might look like for our kids' definitions of success. Follow Amanda on IG at Https://www.instagram.com/amandaclarkstudios/ Or check out her Free integrative breathwork sessions here: Https://calendly.com/amandaclarkstudios/integrative-breathwork-session-freebie And as always, if you need a boost to figure out where you want to be - as a parent, in your health and wealth, check out all the tools and ways we can work together at www.wendyverwey.com

EP 35: A Full Circle Trip To The Bank

Yesterday I had a full circle moment when I had to deal with my children's education fund. It was a reminder of how far I've come and how much I've achieved in the world of investing. I wanted to talk about it here on the podcast because I know many of my listeners are interested in investing, they see the value in it, but are overwhelmed because they don't know what they don't know. I hear you, friends!  I hope this little jog down my memory lane will help you realize you don't have to know everything - you just have to start.  Somewhere.  Anywhere! What I've realized through my investing journey is that the only 'mistakes' you can make with your money happen when you're not true to yourself and what you want your life to feel like.  And these mistakes are really just opportunities to learn more. This episode is also your invitation to book a 2 hour Clarity Workshop with me.  My clients always tell me how helpful it is to just talk about their money and their dreams with someone who understands the fear of making a mistake, who makes money conversations less intimidating and who doesn't judge you for any of it. If this episode hit home for you, let me know by giving it a rating, a review and subscribing for more!

EP 34: How To Get Out Of Your Own Way!

Andrea Crisp has been fired from (almost) every job she ever had. In this week's episode she talks about what it was like for her to finally make the decision to walk away from her two careers to pursue her own coaching business. We covered all kinds of topics like: Are you TOO BIG for your job?  The LESS you do at work, the more you seem to be rewarded How letting go of what you SHOULD do, gets you more results in life Challenges that women face in the workplace What working with a life coach feels like and how 'normal people' use them Showing up bigger in your life The joy of podcasting How to get out of your own way Investing in your life Andrea's coaching clients affectionately call her their 'secret weapon' because of her innate ability to identify their potential and champion their unique purpose. As a creative and multi-passionate woman, Andrea was driven by purpose but felt hopelessly lost when it came to bringing her own dreams to life.  With over 20 years experience as an educator, musician, and pastor it took failing time and time again and being let go from her dream job to realize that her true gifting was as a mindset and success coach. When she's not coaching, writing, or hosting her podcast, The Couragecast, you can find her taking a walk out in the woods with her rescue pup Coffee Crisp or hanging out at the local coffee shop with friends. Her first book, "Designed With Purpose" was written in 2011 to help women discover and live out their God-given purpose. www.andreacrisp.ca/media

EP 33: Speed Limit 45 with Geta Barbu

This week on FIRE Yourself First, we have our first REPEAT Guest!   You'll remember Geta Barbu from Episode 17 where we talked about our mutually favorite subject that Health is Wealth. This time she's back to talk about the challenge she gave to herself over the summer to SLOW DOWN.  She calls it Speed Limit 45 and it is so relatable! Slowing down has so many benefits.  Here are Geta's top 10 lessons from the exercise: Less parenting, more being Kids watch the small things, not the big things I set the tone for the day, nobody else can do that for me I'm deeply hard on myself and then am shocked when others give compliments Doing silent time for 10 minutes in the car gets the kids to talk and share with me On  purpose scream singing to a song I love does indeed improve mood and gets the kids to see what mom enjoys Being more present made the summer feel longer - like I created more time Slowing down is scary, but the rewards are huge Water and food taste better when you slow down to actually taste it Slowing down makes me much more confident in decision making Get the whole story by tuning in now.  And if you could relate, give us a like and review!

EP 30: Are you living in a Dilbert comic?

Corporate Change Management vs Life Change Management Hey there! Are you tired of the daily grind and constantly striving to get ahead? Well, I've been there too. In fact, I spent years in the corporate world, navigating the world of strategy development, change management, and implementation. I even have the certificates to prove it! Let me tell you, all those hours of training focused on figuring out the mission and vision statements, crafting the perfect words to rally everyone behind the desired outcome. We would spend weeks overthinking and waffling, trying to get it just right. But here's the thing - all that brainstorming and analysis was only the beginning. We would then dive into SWOT analysis. You know, that nifty tool that identifies the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to the changes we wanted to implement. Strengths - what are you good at? Weaknesses - what do you need to account for? Opportunities - what could happen if things go well? Threats - what's standing in the way? But here's where things got tricky. We would meticulously write everything down on whiteboards and sticky notes, feeling accomplished and patting ourselves on the back. We thought we had solved the world's problems! But guess what? When it came to putting those words into action, we often hit a roadblock. Teams would start second-guessing their earlier decisions, circling back to the mission and vision statements, doing everything they could to avoid taking the action that would truly make a difference. And I get it, change can be scary. There's a lot at stake, and it's easy to be afraid of taking a stand, afraid of being the one to make a difference. At my former company, I saw firsthand how ego-driven inaction held us back. Nobody wanted to champion the change if it wasn't a guaranteed success. People didn't want to make waves or upset anyone. So, we settled for the easy wins, the low-hanging fruit. We would do something small, say we made a difference, and move on to the next thing. It was like living in a Dilbert comic for 15 years of my career! But here's the thing - changing a corporate system is tough, but changing your own life? Well, it's a whole different game. You can apply the same principles we used in the corporate world to your personal life and make a real game-changing difference. When you start treating your life like a business, you can't help but optimize it. So, if any of this resonates with you, I'd love for you to tune into my podcast episode. I'll be diving deeper into the challenges of corporate change management versus life change management. It's a topic close to my heart, and I think you'll find it eye-opening. Oh, and if you enjoy the episode, I would absolutely love it if you could leave a review! Your feedback means the world to me. And hey, if you're struggling to get started on changing the business of your life, I've got you covered. Check out all the tools and services I offer at www.wendyverwey.com. Let's take control and make a difference in our lives together. Thanks for listening!

Sybil's all about offering invaluable tools, resources, and a supportive community to help her fellow educators balance life, boost their financial savvy, and boldly chase their dreams.
