Jack-of-all-trades, master of one!
Fresh-Oil Episode #09 IS THIS A SPECIALIST LOOKING FOR A GENERALIST? OR A GENERALIST LOOKING FOR A SPECIALIST? It will depend upon who is sitting at the computer! That will determine who the people in the background represent. Why Generalists and Specialists need each other. LIfe serves up an interesting conundrum. Should you be a specialist or should you be a generalist? The question was posed on a podcast that caused the hosts to ponder the answer. "Why is this episode going off the charts?" "What is so unusual about this episode?" I recently interviewed the author of these questions, Jayme Soulati, and decided to review the show she shares with John Gregory Olson. Because it begged an answer, and I was immediately struck by several considerations of my own. So... Growing up, we had a saying in Northern Ireland and across the general British Isles. He is, "A Jack-of-all-trades, but a master of none!" The idea was that they could do many things well, but no one thing with mastery. You will see that I think this should be, "jack-of-all-trades or master of one!" What I mean by this is that most generalists are wrapped around a specialty. But seldom are specialists geared the same way. I never really grabbed the essentials of this moniker until I realized something about myself. I did master one specific thing, or at least made it my specific objective to master it as much as I was capable of doing. Along the way I picked up the generalists bent. Being interested in everything and curious about too many things. I examined life, living, work, play, and more. But often I lost interest in going beyond proficiency in the matter. I know why now. There's nothing wrong with the ladder, it's the wall that needs to be moved. Comparisons of need. One inch wide and ten miles deep. The specialist. They are the one inch wide and a mile deep people. They have the intricacies of the speciality. Your customer needs this but often the generalist can't supply it. So, you go to the ladder, the specialist and barter a deal. One inch deep and ten miles wide. The generalist. They are the one inch deep and a mile wide people. They have the intricacies of a wide general competency. They have what the specialist doesn't and they need it. so you go to the wall or the ladder and or the wall or the ladder must come to you. Here are some examples to consider. Tesla and Edison Nicola Tesla was the ladder. Without him Edison could not light his bulb or safely deliver current over long distances. Tesla needed Edison to get a place to build his ladder of expertise. Edison used this to his advantage whenever he needed him. Jobs and Wozniak Jobs was the generalist that saw what the future electronic age would bring. Wozniak was the ladder that Jobs put against that wall to make it happen. Jobs needed Wozniak to build the ladder. Wozniak needed Jobs to get his expertise to market. Ford and business minds Ford saw the wall for the cars. His engineers built the ladder. Ford created the assembly line. The engineers build the ladders he saw and needed. And then there is you? Are you a specialist? Find your generalist who faces the same wall or similar. Pair up. Form a coop. Let the generalist find the walls, then bring the ladders to them. And the reverse if you are a generalist. Not so easy, but worth the work. Each specialist needs to find the right generalist or selection of generalists to work with. Same for the generalist they need their ladder building specialists as well. When this happens. Clients can be served the best. But specialists and generalists often are one man or one woman shows. The costs are too high to share the revenue of business with another. So going it alone takes its toll. Oh! of course there is always an exception to the rule. Once in a while you get an exceptional specialist who is an extraordinary generalist.

Why Love is faster than knowledge?
LOVE IS FASTER THAN KNOWLEDGE Jack Wood said that. I never forgot it. Jack Wood was many things during his lifetime. One of them was friend to people. He was a friend of mine. He had compassion for the needs of people. That sticks with me to this hour. This is not a religious examination of a few words here. I am not a religious man. At all. I do aspire to be a spiritual man. That is acceptable in this world if your spiritual aspriations are etheral, remote, internal even. What isn't acceptable is an open show of your core spiritual values. Especially if they show up, or expose the base nature of men. Today this podcast is, rather, a look at the heart of our existence. The very narrative of your human condition. In the lead picture depicting the title, you see a man aiding another man. This image is representative of a story from The Unknown Book and tells of one specific person. The Good Samaritan. It is a story that conveys another story. It shows that knowledge isn't enough. There must be more. We can excuse ourselves from just about anything with enough knowledge. And we often do! The "go and do likewise clause..." Love is an action, not an intellectual exercise to be considered. The Good Samaritan tells a story... Of course, you have to go to The Unknown Book to read of it. Go here; The New Testament. The Gospel of Luke. Chapter 10: 25-37. The Thieves. A man fell among thieves they stripped him, robbed him, left him half dead. They had knowledge, to do evil. They lacked love. They had no compassion. A Priest. A priest came by, saw him and passed by on the other side of the road. Well educated in everything religious. Disdainful of the human condition. Above it. Compassionless, callous, human failure. A Levite. Another religious man came by. He looked at him and passed by. Also on the other side. Similar but curious. Cold hearted. Without compassion. No better than the thieves and robbers. All these men lived on "The Other Side." of life. They had knowledge. They lacked love. They had no compassion. They displayed the dark nature of the human condition. The Samaritan. The Samaritan came next, saw him and had compassion upon him. Went to him. Bound up his wounds. Pouring oil and wine into the wounds to cleans and begin the healing. Set him on his own beast. Brought him to an inn. Took care of him. Paid for his care. Planned to return to pay any other costs. What you don't see here is that the Samaritan was the despised man in the story. Half breed with no real national identity. Aware of life and the burden of navigating the human condition. Living with the speed of love before engaging in the act of knowledge. The Author of love. The teller of this incident is Himself not without compassion. Always the quickest to act by loves demands before serving the effects of knowing. Giving the example of the speed of things. We learn that: Love has a first Cause... Go here; The New Testament. 1John Chapter 4:19. We love him because he first loved us... So says The Unknown Book. We see that: Love has a prime Effect... Go here; The New Testament. 1John Chapter 3:16. Hereby pereive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us... Again so says The Unknown Book. Charity is love in shoe leather... Actions matter not an intellectual understanding. Go here; The New Testament. I Corinthians Chapter 13:1-13 The list of all the pursuits that men undertake. Yet not one of them is worth anything if they aren't led by love in action. Summarized in these words: "... though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing." You're passing by on the other side. If your actions aren't building upon Charity.

Are you living through the looking glass instead of living life?
Today Alice doesn't go down the hole into wonderland, she goes online instead! Then it's bye bye... -------------------------------------------------- The problem with the looking glass is that it is the looking glass, not the living glass! A while back I was attending a social media event. It was my first of this kind. It was not my first event that I had attended, but this was a first for many reasons. The day began well. Meeting people, introductions, chat, excitment and some conversation at meeting people In Real Life away from the digital screens we use. Then it began to happen. A group I was with walked to a restuarant location near our hotels. We all wanted to eat some food. I expected more conversation, getting to know more about these professional people from various fields and careers. I did, but not as I expected. Out came every small screen in the possession of all those present. Some had two screens. No one was without. I had an old iphone 3 and was on a limited plan. Not yet birthed into the looking glass phenom' a newbee as it were. These people, googled what was being talked about. Texted or tweeted what was being talked about. Ocassionally looked up to drink, afirm, nod or laugh at something. Before deepdiving back into their looking glass. I was aghast, amazed, in awe of what I was seeing. Our server came, used to this lack of eye contact. Sorted out what people were going to eat and left. Food arrived, people ate, and continued with the hunt for the white rabbit or the Queen of hearts. No one was perturbed. I sat in wonder. Into the evening and the social gathering was organized around another venue. Pictures being taken by a photographer were being tweeted, posted, shared, emailed, and who knows what else. All live. Now. And, the people in the room who were the participants in this event were the ones recieving these tweets posts and more... It all was astonshing. I spoke the next day at this event. My 10 minute topic went trending in the city. I was being monitored, tweeted, posted and lauded live. I felt like I was in a surreal location of the world. Nope, I was in the new world that was being replicated all around me. That was four years ago nearly. Things have changed and how. No one can see around them. Smartphone addiction, particularly among children, is altering the way we interact with one another. A member of the Kwon civic group in South Korea, Kim Nam-Hee, asked a classroom of 10 year old students compare the hours they spend on their smartphones with the time they spend interacting with relatives. She found a disturbing gap between the amount of digital and human interaction they were engaging in. -Techaddiction As the screen changes so does the attention span People watch the news. It is often not pleasant. It is often unsettling. But, we have gotten used to clicking away to something more pleasing. this isn't normal. There is no time to reflect upon the atrocities, horrors and wins. Everything becomes abstract. Nothing to see here, move along. Everything is being driven by the looking glass. People are cherry picking the world in which they live in. The reality distortion of field of a famous computer executive is here now for anyone and everyone. The iPhone 5, as with many other technologies of today, invoke a variety of social problems, too. One of the main problems is the distraction from the real world. People can be so involved in what they’re doing on their phones that they can forget about what really matters and that is real life. -Wikia The backlash to digital screens is real The host collects phones at the door of the dinner party. At a law firm, partners maintain a no-device policy at meetings. Each day, a fleet of vans assembles outside New York’s high schools, offering,

7 steps to navigating the human condition!
Meet Cartoon Me: Billy Delaney Drawn by:FRITS AHLEFELDT The business of navigating the human condition. Episode #005 You either understand how to or you do not. There is no try, no college educated effort. It is always you do or you do not understand. What am I talking about? The approach Educating or Selling. Everything today is born on the field of selling. Push, pull no matter what you name it the consideration is that you persuade or perish. But can there be another way. A way that doesn't rely upon these methods. To see what happens on the internet is an education in and of itself. There, it is all manufactured. Nobody need care, you don't have to face the people you sell. Just do it! right? But... This other way is better. Educate them, instead of pitch them, hit them up, Bamboozle them into buying. And only educate the ones who meet the criterea that you know about before you start. Educate them that YOU know all about them and the problems they face. The want that is yearning to be fixed by someone relevant and Assuring. Do this and be yourself. Use the compass. Navigate instead of follow. True North Wants not needs. People have things going wrong and right in their daily lives. To answer them they go looking for help. The right help is what they want, and or need. The want often is not even known to them. They just know that they are without, and want to fix that. There is north then there is a True North. Just like in the material world of things. If you have ever looked at a compass you can see this. In todays world any north it seems will do. But, there is the True North that changes how you really navigate everything human. The human condition Begging for love earning respect. People are simple. They want something. Actually two things. They will move life and limb to get these two things. We all want to be loved. Love, ah! the expierence of that alone has moved more money than can be counted. Behind most activity people conduct is the desire to be loved. Really loved. Loved for who they are, what they are, where they are! Navigating this is the work of any and everything we engage in throughout our lives. We all want to be respected. Respect, the grail of which the human heart beats for all the long day. People want to know how this respect can be obtained, earned, kept. The validation of respect from those you admire, love associate or want to associate with is powerful. It is esteemed to be almost as important as food. Nobody can get enough of either. Nobody that wants love turns it away. Neither do they flick of respect and its validating glow. So what's a person to do? Learn how to use the compass and its related steps of application. #1. Your Business We many think we are in the business of selling, promoting or pushing something. But are we. That is a question worth considering. I think not! We are in the life business of navigating the other lives around us. Knowing how to accomplish this gives us relevance in other lives, Understanding the wants and how to meet them allows us to assure these other lives. So, how does this look to other we want to reach. In their eyes, are you a what or a why? In the words of leadership expert Simon Sinek: people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it You can learn pretty quickly which one you are. All you need to do is ask. When you know what is behind being a what or a why, everything changes. That is, if you ask the right questions. If you do ask these right questions, and you can face the truth. You can choose. If not then you get to be a fake. You don't get to be yourself. You have to create something else. #2. Your Customer

The Unknown Book, it’s place in your future?
THE UNKNOWN BOOK Episode #004 What is honored in a country will be cultivated there. -Plato. While this is an exercise in demonstrating that the inside of this Book is largely unknown. It's existence, influence, power, literary brilliance, reach, effects, appeal, and wonder are universal. What we are speaking about today is the ignorance of what lies within it pages. That is the issue. All the talk, facts, oratory, quotes and more by people show their ignorance. There is only one way to know the Unknown Book. You must read it from cover to cover, and that more than once or twice. It is a lifetimes worth of reading. Nobody ever outgrows Scripture; the book widens and deepens with our years. -Charles Spurgeon. No one, absolutely no one can claim to be educated without having truely read this Book. The question is and always will be. "Have your read it?" A Throrough knowledge of the Bible is worth moree than a college education. -Theodore Roosevelt Nothing you have heard, or been told about The Unknown Book can or will ever prepare you for what is a reading experience. It cannot be expressed by another, it is something you must experience for yourself. It ain't those parts of the Bible that I can't understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand -Mark Twain. Every person brings something to reading this Book and every person takes something away from it that only they can know. Some people are taken a way by the Book and are filled with the desire to cultivate that Book in their country. While others not so much at all. Here is a slice of both views: For the book... The Bible is the most thought-suggesting book in the world. No other deals with such grand themes. -Herrick Johnson Against the book... One does well to put on gloves when reading the New Testament; the proximity of such impurity almost compels this... I have searched in it vainly for even a single congenial trait... everything in it is cowardice and self-deception. -Fredrich Nietzche For the book... It is impossible to mentally or socially enslave a Bible-reading people. The principles of the Bible are the groundwork of human freedom. -Horace Greeley Against the Book... As far as I can remember, there is not one word in the Gospels in praise of intelligence. -Bertrand Russell For the Book... It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible. - George Washington Against the Book... The dogma of the infallibility of the Bible is no more self-evident than is that of the infalibility of the popes. -Thomas Henry Huxley For the Book... To read the Bible is to take a trip to a fair land where the spirit is strengthened and faith renewed - Dwight D. Eisenhower Against the Book... The total absence of humor from the Bible is one of the most singular things in all literature. -Alfred North Whitehead For the Book... The whole of the inspiration of our civilization springs from the teachings of Christ and the lessons of the Prophets. To read the Bible for these fundamentals is a necessity of American life. - Herbert Hoover But... To get to know the Unknown Book you and you alone have to take the time to read it. Too often prejudice against the book is won by some heralded name and intellect. But the question remains and holds court in a demanding stance, have your read the book? It takes 70 hours and 40 minutes to read the Bible at pulpit rate. It takes 52 hours and 20 minutes to read the Old Testament. It takes 18 hours and 20 minutes to read the New Testament. In the Old Testament th Psalms take the longest to read: 4 hours and 28 minutes. In the New Testament the Gospel of Luke takes 2 hours and 43 minutes to read. -Eleanor Doan. The Common trap... How many times have I heard from someone or known a person who picked it up to read. And, they started at the lists in Chronicles! Or Leviticus!!

Not Waving but drowning…
Not Waving But Drowning A poem by Stevie Smith. Not Waving But Drowning Nobody heard him, the dead man, But still he lay moaning: I was much further out than you thought And not waving but drowning. Poor chap, he always loved larking And now he's dead It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way, They said. Oh, no no no, it was too cold always (Still the dead one lay moaning) I was much too far out all my life And not waving but drowning. - Stevie Smith We don't need to look far to see this drowning. People drown within feet of help. In life most things are the opposite of what they appear. At the corner of Social and Commerce, life and living takes place. Or it is being lost with help a few feet away. This isn't an easy thing to consider. You see at the heart of life and living everything is not as it would seem. Consider this and may wisdom be given to you regarding it. Let me tell you a story... When I was just a kid living in Belfast, Northern Ireland. We had some off beat characters. Today they are called street people, homeless, or worse. As is often the truth, they are the drowning from another event. Often a war, or a trauma in their lives. One man, we kids called him "Slasher" due to the arm waving motion he exhibited when seem by people. We thought he was warding us away. Who really knows what he was gesticulating or meaning by it. But one day... He was walking by the door to my home in Moores Place, Sandy Row. My Mother often fed the neighbor soup and the like on a regular basis. He lived in a terrible conditions, right next door to us. Ours were not that much better, but we had each other, soap and water, which our neighbor it seemed did not. Anyway... I called "Slasher" over and asked him if he had eaten today. He slashed the air and told me he was hunger. He did this by gesturing with his hands of an invisible bowl and spoon he was moving back and forth from his bowl to his mouth. That was it. I asked my Mother if we could give him something to eat. Like soup. My Mother was taxed by me at the best of times, but she put some soup on for "Slasher." He stood at my doorway, not much but home, in the inner city reaches of a troubled town, and slurped his soup. Without much more than a knowing look and an open handed return of the bowl he was gone. I however was changed. I could see men like him everywhere. Invisible to those who did not seem to see anything. All before colour TV, Video, Gameboys, the Internet, pocket computer phones and more. That is were I come in... You see I am a misfit. My career has been one of testing many things. Only to be moved on by circumstances and events often well beyond my control or influence. Frustrating and hard to come to terms with. But this was to be my lot in life. As I grew, and my mind began to wrestle with the things of life: God, purpose, meaning of things I faced, War, Death. Poverty. I began the search. Oh! I searched. But meanwhile I was not waving. I was drowning. Seven years in the Royal British Navy led me to consumption of all kinds of alcohol. Lots of it. I was drowning, and not waving. But no one could see this. Except for a few, those necessary few who pulled me up and out of the waters I was drowning in. At my peak drowning moment, 19 years of age. I was thrown the lifeline. And.. I learned how to be a life guard. What kind of life guard I am I cannot say. But I strive to be a good one. I've paid my dues in the waters I have come across around the world. Here I am. Eventually I came to find my place. This place of helping. This site my life ring. This work of being a life guard. Here I show you both the wants of life, like an income and friends. But,

“FRESH-OIL” WHAT IS IT, WHO IS IT FOR?
PODCAST EPISODE #001 SO... WHAT QUALIFIES ME TO HOLD FORTH? I have been around... Living on Three Contents before I was 25. Sailing The Atlantic Ocean and several Seas. Often the first things I saw when coming to land were through a dockyard. You have no idea what that is really about or like. Unless, of course, you did too like me. I have worked doing lots of different, engaging, enjoyable, hard and trying things. You can CLICK HERE to get a broader picture of me and my bucket carrying ways. I've seen things... Things that aren't seeable anymore, because they have gone out of the world. Like climbing the mast at H.M.S. Ganges, without a safety harness, without a spotter, all on my own. Check THIS LINK out to get an idea of what I am talking about. Or living in Tripoli, LIbya behind the winter palace and living on the beach after school. Hanover Germany not too long after the war, visiting Belsen and more... LIving in the sixties and seventies in England, Ireland, and Scotland and all that change. Using a system of money that was unique in the world but ended in 1969 Living through a very uncivil war and seeing the depths of mans ways. Bloody Sunday, Bloody Friday. Bloody days all the time, and amongst the most unusual tribe on earth: Ulstermen. While living a life... I got the stamp of education on my life to liven up the journey. I was reading Huxley's Doors of Perception, Orwells Animal Farm, The Road to Wigan Pier, How to Kill an Elephant, Nietzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra, Augustines City of God, the philosopers, and just about anything I could get my hands upon that remotely interested me. Biographies of all types of human being were a staple in my jeans pocket. Soldiers, Poets, Mystics, Heroes, Inventors, adventurers and more. All before I sat down in a formal training environment. I did not have a plan in educating myself, but that turned out just fine. I learned to press fresh-oil, for myself and others like me. Along the way I got seperated from the main stream, this site will show and tell why. This is my educational journey... My education is outside the pail, and as everything about me would attest, keeps it that way. I saw a pattern in my education, I've followed it and it has never let me down. It has over time become very clear to me that there is a real need for what I do. You will learn about it here at fresh-oil. I will apply that education I received to the times we face and comment upon them, and the people we interview. So three degrees later I have this... B.Div studying the history of The Bible and the Churches it produced. This was the most unusual education a man or woman could ever get, and it is all but gone. I was educated in a small institute, that at its peak was a whirlwind of insights, scope and messmerizing knowledge. It's place in the world is gone now. But it helped shape me. Make me a thinker and a doer. A man. Th.M studying the history of Politics an the Ideologies it produced. While living in a war zone, and one that was anything but civil, in Belfast. I took on the challenge of understanding the origins and development of the Irish Problems i...
