Kimberly and Jarrod Hester, known on the trail as Hippie Chick and Poet, are the current owners of Shaw's Hiker Hostel in Monson, Maine, located about 2 miles from the Appalachian Trail. Together they thru-hiked the AT from Georgia to Maine in 2008. On this week’s episode of “Hiker Sessions” we chat with seasoned hikers Mike Hansen and Bryan Davis about their recent thru-hike of the Pinhoti Trail. I met Mike in the middle of the 100 Wilderness almost 4 years ago now, and since then, he’s introduced me to Bryan. In January of 2024 the three of us, along with other friends and family, summited Mount Kilimanjaro, and just last July we hiked the 137 mile Maine section of the International Appalachian Trail. Approximately a year before commencing my northboundAppalachian Trail (AT) thru-hike, I was introduced to the Mighty Blue on the Appalachian Trail." podcast. Instantly captivated, I was drawn to Steve Adams' genuine enthusiasm and passion for the Appalachian Trail and its community. Since then, I have been a dedicated listener and fan, with the honorof being featured on his podcast multiple times. Steve is a distinguished podcaster with over 2.5 million downloads of his renowned show. In this episode I was joined by a special guest who I met in port Clinton, Pennsylvania right out in front of the town Post Office. She was dropping off another hiker and I asked her if she could shuttle me to the next town over Hamburg, PA, which was about 2 miles away. I had been craving Chinese food, so she recommended the JA Buffet. It ended up being one of the best Chinese buffet restaurants I’ve ever eaten at, and I sat there and gorged myself for 2 hours. Fortunately, I took one of her cards and was able to text her the next morning for a shuttle back to the trail. I did a bit of shuttling after I finished my 2024 thru-hike last fall, so I was very interested to sit down with Pip and gain some insights from her about her business. We discuss how she got started shuttling, what brings her joy in doing it, what some of the challenges of running a hiker shuttle are, and what advice she would give for someone who wants to start their own hiker shuttling service. In this episode of Hiker Sessions I was very excited and honored to be joined by Janice Clain, the newly elected President of the Maine Appalachian Trail Club (MATC). If I had to describe Janice in just a few words, I would say "she gets involved!" Janice grew up in Milo, Maine, about 30 miles from the 100 Mile Wilderness section of the Appalachian Trail. She holds degrees in world languages (she speaks French, Spanish and German) and education from the University of Maine. Janice is a long-time educator who recently retired after 53 years of teaching at various schools throughout Maine. During her teaching career, she was involved in activities such as Spanish Club, French Club, student council, as well as organizing events like winter carnival, blood drives, Thanksgiving collections, and spirit week. She has been the supervisor for the Gulf Hagas Ridge runner in the 100 Mile Wilderness section of the AT since 2004, she held various positions within the MATC prior to becoming president, has visited over 40 national parks, and this will be her 6th summer volunteering on the famous El Camino De Santiago trail in Spain. In this episode, I was accompanied by Dana Thurston. Dana began volunteering with the Maine Appalachian Trail Club in 1988. During his time volunteering on the AT, he encountered numerous inspiring stories from the many thru hikers he met along the trail. Reaching a pivotal moment in his life, Dana decided to embark on a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 1991, adopting the Trail name “Stryder” as part of a group that were fans of the characters from *The Lord of the Rings*. After successfully completing his thru hike, Dana returned to Maine and continued his volunteer work with the Maine Appalachian Trail Club, maintaining the West Cary Pond section of the Appalachian Trail for 20 consecutive years. I first met Bait-A-Bear, or Bear as we would come to call him, at the one room school house trail magic in southern Virginia.I would go on to see him and his tramily of Busted, Huckleberry, and dog Wyatt many other times on my 2024 AT NOBO thru-hike.It always put a smile on my face when I would meet up with Bear, he always seemed so positive, carefree and cheerful. Alpine was yet another great acquaintance I was fortunate to make on my 2024 AT NOBO thru-hike. While I didn't hike with him for long, he was way to fast for me, I truly enjoyed his conversation and company. One of my most memorable mornings on the trail was when he and I, along with a few others, tented near Chestnut Knob Shelter (NOBO mile 570.1) just south of Burke's Garden Hostel. We awoke to this amazing sunlit fog that made us all look like zombies walking in the woods. He thru-hiked northbound to complete the trail like a lot of us did, but his finish at the top of Katahdin was in no way ordinary or regular. Pilgrim was probably the nicest person that I encountered on my 2024 AT NOBO thru-hike. In this episode I was joined by a special guest who I met inport Clinton, Pennsylvania right out in front of the town Post Office. She was dropping off another hiker and I asked her if she could shuttle me to the next town over Hamburg, PA, which was about 2 miles away. I had been craving Chinesefood, so she recommended the JA Buffet. It ended up being one of the best Chinese buffet restaurants I’ve ever eaten at, and I sat there and gorged myself for 2 hours. Fortunately, I took one of her cards and was able to text her the nextmorning for a shuttle back to the trail.  I did a bit of shuttling after I finished my 2024 thru-hike last fall, so I was very interested to sit down with Pip and gain some insights from her about her business. Kimberly and Jarrod Hester, known on the trail as Hippie Chick and Poet, are the current owners of Shaw's Hiker Hostel in Monson, Maine, which is located about 2 miles from the Appalachian Trail. Together they thru-hiked the AT from Georgia to Maine in 2008. After working as schoolteachers for a few years they decided to change their lifestyle for the betterment of their family and purchased Shaw’s in 2015.Shaw’s Hiker Hostel has been a central location for the community of Monson, Maine since the late 1970’s. Monson is the first town southbound that Appalachian Trail hikers reach after crossing the 100-Mile Wilderness. In the 1970s, Monson had no restaurants available. In 1977, Keith and Pat Shaw began preparing legendary breakfasts for thru-hikers at their home near the trail. Over time, “Old Man Shaw” and his hiker hostel became well-known among hikers up and down the AT.We sat down with them to discuss their thoughts as they approach the 10-year anniversary of owning Shaw's.
