300. Queen of May
The long-standing tradition of dedicating the month of May to the Virgin Mary began in the 13th century, though it became widely popular in the 1700s, particularly through the influence of the Jesuits. This month-long devotion's origins and historical development emphasized a christian custom that honors her as the Mother of God and Mother of the Church and highlights her role in salvation history and welcomes the spring season as a symbol of new life. May is considered the peak of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, with flowers and greenery representing new life, which is linked to Mary bringing Jesus into the world, symbolizing her queenship and purity. Gospel of Mark (Feast of St. Mark the Evangelist)
Celebrated on April 25th in the Roman Catholic, Protestant Anglican, and Orthodox traditions, Saint Mark's Day is often marked by reading the Gospel of Mark, which is the shortest of the four Gospels and focuses on Jesus as a man of action. In some traditions, particularly in Venice, where he is the patron saint, the Feast of St. Mark is a day of festive celebrations, including the custom of giving a rosebud, or bocolo, to loved ones. While not one of the twelve apostles, Mark was a follower of St. Peter and recorded his eyewitness accounts of Jesus's life. He is often depicted as a winged lion, and is recognized as the founder of the Christian Church in Alexandria, and is also the patron saint of interpreters, lawyers, prisoners, and Venice. Believed to be the earliest extant Gospel and the second of the four canonical Gospels and one of the three synoptic Gospels. Mark’s gospel tells of the ministry of Jesus from his baptism by John the Baptist to his death, the burial of his body, and the discovery of his empty tomb. It portrays Jesus as a teacher, an exorcist, a healer, and a miracle worker, though it does not mention a miraculous birth or divine pre-existence. Jesus refers to himself as the Son of Man. He is called the Son of God but keeps his messianic nature secret; even his disciples fail to understand him. All this is in keeping with the Christian interpretation of prophecy, which is believed to foretell the fate of the messiah as suffering servant. 297. St. George and the Dragon
April 23 is the Feast day of Saint George, the anniversary of his death in 303 AD (some regions & traditions observe St. George’s Day on May 6). While most famous as a heroic Dragon slayer, the patron saint of England, St. George, is also traditionally honored as a patron of Canada, Georgia, Ethiopia, Portugal, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Greece, Egypt, and Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Venerated by both Christians and Muslims, he is also widely celebrated in Germany, Palestine, Lebanon (Beirut), Russia (Moscow), and honored in the regions of Catalonia & Aragon in Spain. Saint George has specific military and civic patronages in the United States where he is recognized as the patron saint of the U.S. Army Armor and Cavalry Branch, as well as, the Boy Scouts of America, who consider him a patron saint of Scouting, with specialized awards offered by Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant Anglican networks. Unable to perform Miracles in Nazareth
MIRACLES — "A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household". Jesus said this in Nazareth, where he was rejected by his family and neighbors. The people of his home town knew Jesus well, but they didn't believe who he was. They called him "the son of Mary" to reject his virgin birth and Messianic claims. Jesus was unable to perform miracles in Nazareth because of their lack of faith. 295. Feast of Kateri Tekakwitha (April 17)
Born in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon, in present-day New York State, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-80) and her family contracted smallpox in an epidemic; she was the only one of the family to survive, but had scarring on her face. She was influenced by French Jesuit missionaries and converted to Catholicism at age 19. After taking a vow of perpetual virginity, she left her village, and moved to the Jesuit mission village of Kahnawake, just south of Montreal, Canada. There she died five years later on April 17th, respected for her piety and good works. She was beatified in 1980 by Pope John Paul II, and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Peter's Basilica on 21 October 2012. Immaculate Conception (Feast of St. Bernadette)
Celebrated annually on April 16 as a solemn feast day, the anniversary of Bernadette Soubirous' death in 1879. The Immaculate Conception’s observance began with a Papal encyclical by Pope Pius IX, when he formally defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854. The Immaculate Conception is the dogma that the Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin. This doctrine states that Mary was preserved from the "stain of sin" from the first moment of her conception through a unique grace from God, granted in anticipation of her role as the mother of Jesus. The annual Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes was established in 1890 for February 11 by Pope Leo XIII. Ee263. Our Lady of Lourdes (Feast of St. Bernadette)
Bernadette Soubirous' feast day is April 16, the anniversary of her death in 1879. The Virgin Mary gave her name to a 14-year old girl near Lourdes, stating: "I am the Immaculate Conception." Lourdes is a town in southwestern France, in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. It’s known for the Sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Lourdes, a major Catholic pilgrimage site. Each year, millions visit the Grotto of Massabielle (Grotto of the Apparitions) where, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared 18 times (between 11 February and 16 July in 1858) to Saint Bernadette Soubirous (1844-79). In the grotto or cave, pilgrims can drink or bathe in water flowing from a believed to be, miraculous spring. The annual Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes was established in 1890 for February 11 by Pope Leo XIII. Ee276. 293. Divine Mercy Sunday
Celebrated on the Sunday after Easter, that is the Second Sunday of Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday is a major feast day in the Catholic Church dedicated to the devotion of God's mercy. Instituted by Pope St. John Paul II in 2000, it stems from revelations to St. Faustina Kowalska (1905-38), offering complete forgiveness of sins and punishment, that is, a plenary indulgence, to those who receive Communion and go to confession. Holy Saturday Easter Special
Jesus was crucified and buried in Jerusalem. Christianity has a close bond with the city of Jerusalem, the Historical Jesus walked its streets and entered its building. It was in this holy city that at eight days of age, he was dedicated in the Great Temple according to Jewish custom. As a man from Nazareth, he preached at the Temple and eventually was arrested, detained, tried, crucified and buried in the city. After his death, his followers believed he rose from the dead, and the community they formed eventually became the early Christian Church, with its headquarters in Jerusalem. The ancient city has been ruled by many different empires over the past 3000 years, and has profound connections with the three great Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Ee101.
