Hunt West Podcast

The Hunt West Podcast is for hunters who'd rather wear out a pair of boots than a YouTube playlist. Most hunting podcasts give you campfire stories, gear hype, or endless tag talk. You'll get strategies for e-scouting, application hacks, mindset shifts, and the kind of woodsmanship that still matters when the Wi-Fi goes dark.If you're the kind of hunter who loves general seasons, sharp steel, glassing knobs, and planning three tags ahead — welcome home.

How To Manage Hunting Pressure | Solo Round

Using real stories from Wyoming elk camps, OTC mule deer hunts, and Nevada trophy deer tags, Jaden explains how understanding how other hunters move through the landscape can completely change your success. Sometimes the guy "stormtrooper-ing" through the woods isn't hurting your odds at all. Other times, a single serious hunter on the right angle can completely change the game. This episode dives deep into: Why "pressure" and "competition" are not always the same thing The importance of hunting angles and visibility How arriving early creates options and backup plans Why most hunters aren't actually hunting effectively When you should pivot to Plan B immediately How to structure hunts around weekdays, season timing, and hunting culture Why some of the most "crowded" hunts still hold incredible opportunity Jaden shares detailed stories about doubling on mule deer during a packed general season opener, managing guided-hunt competition on a premium Nevada tag, and learning that elk don't magically disappear just because you see other hunters in the woods. If you've ever looked at a crowded trailhead and thought, "Well… this hunt's blown," this episode will help you rethink the way you assess pressure and build better hunting strategies moving forward. Chubby Athletic & Dangerous: Always Hunt Ready with Lyle Hebel of MTNTOUGH

In this episode, I sit down with Lyle Hebel from MTNTOUGH to talk about what it really means to be prepared for a Western hunt. We dive into everything from long-range shooting and gear choices to spring bear hunting tactics and how fitness actually plays into success in the field. Lyle shares how he went deep down the shooting rabbit hole, and how chasing improvement across different skills has shaped the way he hunts. We also get into bear hunting strategy, including how to approach early vs late season bears, why getting on the same hillside matters, and how consistent effort beats "perfect timing" more often than not. On the fitness side, we break down how MTNTOUGH has evolved over the last decade from hardcore sheep-hunter prep into something that actually meets hunters where they're at. From beginner programs to full preseason prep, the goal is simple: build hunters who are always ready, not just hoping to survive their hunt. If you want to hunt harder, shoot better, and stop making excuses… this episode is for you. Spot & Stalk Lessons You Can Use This Fall: Stories from Argentina

Fresh off a trip to Argentina, this episode breaks down what happens when you treat a hunt like a training ground instead of a one-shot opportunity. Jaden spent the week chasing blackbuck with a bow while the rest of the crew hunted red stag, stacking reps in open country that feels a lot like pronghorn or mule deer terrain. The result? A pile of blown stalks, a couple missed opportunities, one clean kill, and a ton of lessons that translate directly to Western hunting. This episode dives into what actually matters when you're trying to close the distance: using subtle terrain, waiting for high-percentage setups, and not forcing bad opportunities. There's also a deep look at string jumping, including why mid-range shots can be the most dangerous and how alert animals completely change your odds. If you've ever rushed a stalk, taken a shot you shouldn't have, or felt like you just needed more reps to figure it out, this one will hit home. We Were In Elk… Now What? Archery Tactics for Sealing the Deal

In this episode, a friend of the podcast, Rob Minturn, flipped the script. Rob interviews Jaden to deep dive into tactics for sealing the deal after his crew put a full season of elk lessons to the test. The guys get into the real stuff. Thermals that screw you, bulls that won't commit, when to send it versus when to slow down, and how to actually hunt elk with a group without blowing everything out. A lot of this comes straight from situations they ran into last fall, so it's not theory, it's what actually happens and how to make little adjustments for when it all comes together. If you've ever been in elk but couldn't quite close the deal, this one will probably hit home. What the Crappiest Tags Teach You | Solo Round

In this solo episode, Jaden takes you back through some of his earliest and messiest hunts. From a chaotic first archery mule deer that turned into a full-blown river chase, to grinding through low-success elk and pronghorn units, these stories all point to one core lesson. The unit you draw isn't what determines your success. It's how well you understand and adapt to the hunt in front of you. Too many hunters spend all their energy trying to pick the perfect unit, thinking that the tag itself will solve their problems. In reality, the best hunters in the West are successful because they adjust. They read terrain, understand animal behavior, and change their approach based on pressure, access, and conditions. Whether it's shifting from timber to ag edges for elk, knocking on doors for private access, or grinding out opportunities in low-point units, success comes from solving the hunt, not drawing it. If you're tired of overanalyzing units and just want to become a more effective hunter, this episode will help you rethink your entire approach to Western hunting. Old School Skills, Big Bulls, and What Matters in Western Hunting with Randy Burtis

Randy Burtis is one of those guys who's done more in the hunting world than most people ever will, and he's still just getting warmed up. From growing up surrounded by Wyoming bowhunting legends to becoming a Pope & Young and Boone & Crockett scorer, Randy's life has been shaped by being around people who really know what they're doing. And in this episode, you get a front-row seat to what he's learned along the way. We dive into everything from traditional archery and elk hunting strategy to guiding clients and the reality behind scoring animals. But more than anything, this conversation is about what actually makes someone a better hunter and what most hunters are getting wrong. Randy doesn't sugarcoat much, and that's not only what I appreciate about him, but what makes this one worth your time. The Spring Bear Playbook: Finding Bears on a Low-Snow Year with Tyler Bales

Spring bear season is right around the corner, but this year isn't shaping up like a normal one. With historically low snowpack across the West, the typical "hunt the snowline" strategy goes out the window. In this episode, I sit down with my brother Tyler to break down how we're thinking about finding and killing bears when everything is greening up fast and access is wide open. We dig into how low snow changes bear behavior, where to actually focus your time, and why glassing more country matters this year. We also talk through practical strategies like covering ground on closed roads, using burns and open terrain to your advantage, and how to balance evening glassing with midday scouting. If you've got limited time to hunt, this one will help you make better decisions right away. We also cover the stuff that doesn't get talked about enough, like judging bears, avoiding sows, shot placement, and what to do after the shot. Whether you're chasing your first bear or just trying to adapt to a weird year, this episode will give you a simple, effective game plan to roll into spring with confidence. Tips to Staying Legal While Hunting the West

If you're hunting multiple states this fall, this episode is a must-listen. In this solo episode, I break down the most common ways hunters get into trouble across the West and how to avoid them. From access and road navigation issues to hunter orange requirements and post-kill procedures, we cover the real-world mistakes that cost hunters time, money, and sometimes their entire hunt. The big takeaway is simple. Regulations are your bible. If you're relying only on apps or memory, you're taking a risk. We dive into why tools like OnX are helpful but not perfect, and why you still need to verify roads using Forest Service maps, BLM data, and even county records. I also break down hunter orange requirements state by state, including Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming, plus what to do in states that don't require it. We cover what needs to happen immediately after the shot, including tagging, evidence of sex, and transport rules that vary more than most people realize. I also share a personal story from a Wyoming bighorn sheep hunt where I made a mistake on a unit boundary and what happened after I called it in. That experience reinforced one of the most important lessons in this episode. When in doubt, call a game warden. They would rather answer your question than write you a ticket. If you're building a multi-state hunting strategy, this episode will help you stay legal, stay confident, and avoid the kind of mistakes that can ruin a season. Some Good 'Ol Bowhunting Stories with Josh Jenni

Josh Jenni joins the Hunt West Podcast to swap bowhunting stories from the last few seasons. We dive into encounters with big mule deer during both early and late season archery hunts, including close calls on some stomper bucks, tough stalking conditions, and the lessons that come from opportunities that almost came together. Josh also shares the story of a hard-earned New Mexico archery elk that finally came together after a very good, but tough hunt. This episode is perfect for hunters who enjoy the storytelling side of bowhunting while also picking up practical lessons about patience, stalk decisions, shot distance, and adapting when hunts don't go according to plan. Public Land, Public Wildlife: Why Hunters Need to Pay Attention with Zach Lentsch & Chris Allen

Western hunting only exists because the land and wildlife exist first. In this episode, I sit down with Zach Lentsch and Chris Allen of Protect Wyoming to talk about why hunters need to start paying attention to the political side of public lands, wildlife policy, and scientific management. We dig into the growing push in Wyoming to transfer federal public lands, the ongoing fight around landowner tags and wildlife privatization, and why organizations like Protect Wyoming are stepping into the political arena to defend the North American model of wildlife conservation. Zach and Chris also explain how Senate Joint Resolution 9 recently passed in Wyoming and why it sends an important message about keeping public lands in public hands.  If you get nothing else from this episode, it should be to get out and vote during the primaries this election season. But for those who love a good conversation about the intersection of politics and what we love to do as hunters, this episode has a whole lot more.  Show Links: Protect Wyoming – protectwyoming.org Instagram & Facebook – @ProtectWyoming Sign up for the Montana Deer & Elk Webinar [March 10, 2026] >> Learn about Eastman's Elite Membership >> Check out Kifaru Gear >> Thanks to Bo DePena, a musician, friend, and avid hunter in Colorado, for the intro and outro for the show.

It's Gonna Be Harder Than You Think | Solo Round

Western hunting is harder than you think. Not impossible. Not unattainable. Just harder than most people expect when they're looking at a grip-and-grin photo on Instagram. In this solo episode, I walk back through my first archery elk in 2019 that took seven seasons to seal the deal, nearly 200 mountain miles in one September, blown opportunities on opening morning, and a full send on the final weekend. I also revisit my 2022 180-inch mule deer that required 18 days hunting one basin. The point is simple. You only see the tip of the iceberg. You rarely see what's underwater. We talk about the trade-offs that define Western hunting. Time. Physical effort. Money. Access. Fitness. Gear. Experience. You don't get to skip the cost. You only choose where you pay it. Whether that means grinding miles, investing in scouting trips, paying for trespass access, bringing in help to shorten the learning curve, or even going guided, the effort shows up somewhere. And if your goal is simply to reset, hunt with buddies, and enjoy the mountains, that matters too. Just be honest about your expectations. Western hunting will demand something from you. The question is what you're willing to trade for the level of success you're chasing. ___  LINKS:  LandTrust (Montana Hunting Access) >>  Infinite Outdoors (Colorado & Wyoming Hunting Access) >> Learn about the Bridger Reckon Presale at Bridgerwatch.com >>  Hunt West Webinar Series >> Hunt West Planning Services >>

Full Send: Bucks and Bulls with Kenneth Thrall at Kifaru

Six years ago, Kenneth Thrall cold-emailed me asking what would happen if he moved to Wyoming. Then, he bought a house in Riverton and believed if he went full send, he'd figure it out. Fast forward to today and he's a key part of Kifaru International, grinding behind the scenes and in the mountains. In this episode, we talk about what it really looks like to bet on yourself, start at the bottom, and go all in, whether it's in hunting or life. On the hunting side, we go deep into the chess match with a 9.5-year-old mule deer, the patience it takes to hunt mature bucks under pressure, and why sometimes fewer tags lead to better seasons. On the gear side, we dig into the new clothing launch from Kifaru, including innovative mid-layers, updated late-season systems, and what's coming down the pipeline for packs like the Hoodlum and 44 Mag. Colorado Mule Deer & Their Management: A 2020 Throwback Episode

This week we're doing something a little different. We're rewinding back to a 2020 Muley Monday episode with former Colorado Parks and Wildlife staff member, J.T. Romantzke to talk mule deer management, buck ratios, season structures, crowding, and chronic wasting disease. At the time, Colorado was entering a new five-year season structure and beginning to lean harder into CWD management. A lot of big decisions were being made. A lot of theories were being tested. Fast forward six years. Some things look similar. Some things look very different.  At the end of the episode, I break down where Colorado stands right now and why it's still one of the most important opportunity states in the West. If you're applying for mule deer or elk this year, this episode will help you understand what's changed, what hasn't, and how to think more critically about where you burn your points. Did this age well? I'll let you decide. In the end, I hope you gain valuable information about how mule deer are managed in Colorado and across the West with this throwback episode. Contingencies: How to Build Backup Plans with Hayden Richins

Nothing is a guarantee when you're hunting out west, so this episode is all about building contingencies that keep you in the game no matter what. Jaden and his buddy Hayden Richins break down how they plan archery mule deer seasons when draw odds are shaky, wildfires are a real threat, and Plan A rarely survives first contact.  Using their own multi-state strategy as an example, they walk through smart backup planning across Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, and even over-the-counter options, plus how to pivot once you're on the ground when glassing, terrain, or animal movement isn't working. If you've ever missed a draw, been burned by wildfire, or wasted days sticking to a bad plan, this episode will help you hunt more seasons and adapt faster when things go sideways. ____  Links:  Hayden Richins on Instagram @wynotwild >>  Hayden's Photography & Prints - wynotwild.com Check Out Kifaru's Gear at Kifaru.net >> Sign Up for Eastmans' Elite Membership >> Hunt West Webinar Series >>

The Craziest Hunting Season You've Ever Heard with Alex Aguirre

What happens when everything goes right… and wrong… in the same hunting season? In this episode, Jaden sits down with Wyoming native Alex Aguirre to unpack what might be the most unhinged fall any hunter has ever lived through. We're talking mountain goat, moose, multiple elk, a giant mule deer, a commissioner's tag, lost horses (plural), grizzly bears on carcasses, night pack-outs, and a season that simply refused to slow down. Alex walks through the full timeline, from tags "falling out of the sky" to grinding through early mornings, brutal weather, and back-to-back once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. Along the way, he shares hard-earned lessons on horse packing, dealing with pressure, and why helping others kill animals often makes you a better hunter yourself. It's a masterclass in grit and staying in the game when plans blow up. This episode is a long one, but absolutely worth it. If you've ever wondered what it really takes to maximize opportunity in the West, push through adversity, and keep showing up when things go sideways, this one will hit home. Crushing Easy-Draw Colorado Elk Hunts & the Muley Obsession with Garrison Kinsel

In this episode of the Hunt West Podcast, I sit down with my buddy Garrison Kinsel for a deep dive into what it actually takes to be successful on low-point and "easy draw" Western hunts. We cover Colorado elk strategy, the realities of the reissue list, OTC pressure, and why point creep is a trap so many hunters fall into. Garrison breaks down how elk behavior changes under pressure, how to find animals living in the cracks, and why hunting the same units repeatedly can teach you more than burning points on a so-called premium tag. We also get into mule deer obsession in a big way. Summer scouting, early archery vs muzzleloader hunts, desert bucks that migrate miles overnight, and the mental grind of staying on a master glassing knob when everything in you wants to move. Garrison tells the full story of killing his wide Nevada buck after days of doubt, missed timing, and doing things the hard way instead of the easy way. If you're a hunter trying to level up without waiting a decade on points, this episode is packed with real-world lessons, hard-earned mistakes, and strategies you can actually use this season. Gear Evolution for Western Hunters: How to Build a Smart Kit Without Wasting Money

In this solo episode of the Hunt West Podcast, Jaden  breaks down his real-world gear evolution as a Western big game hunter. This episode walks through how boots, backpacks, optics, and tripods actually fit into a smart hunting strategy over time. From trail shoes and bargain boots to purpose-built mountain footwear, from budget packs to serious load-hauling frames, Jaden shares what worked, what failed, and what he'd do differently if he were starting over today. This episode is built for hunters on a budget who want better hunts, not just better-looking gear. You'll hear practical advice on buying used gear, matching equipment to your hunt style, avoiding common gear mistakes, and investing in experiences over equipment. Private Land & Public Hunters with James Nash

In this episode of the Hunt West Podcast, Jaden sits down with James Nash to tackle one of the most important—and misunderstood—topics in Western hunting today: private land, public hunters, and the relationship between the two. James grew up on a multi-generation Oregon ranch dating back to the late 1800s, and he brings a rare perspective shaped by ranching, guiding, conservation work, and firsthand experience dealing with both great hunters and absolute train wrecks. Together, they unpack why so much of the West's best wildlife habitat sits on private land, how history like the Homestead Act shaped today's access challenges, and why entitlement from hunters has burned more bridges than most people realize. The conversation goes deep into what actually works when it comes to earning access, building trust, and hunting ethically around private land—without pretending hunters are "doing landowners a favor." James explains why timing, humility, and offering real value matter more than asking for permission at the wrong moment, and why trust is gained in drops and lost in buckets. On the flip side, they also discuss how landowners can improve wildlife habitat, reduce conflict, and strengthen relationships with the hunting public—especially when it comes to mule deer, predators, fencing, and grazing practices. If you care about access, wildlife, and the future of Western hunting, this episode is required listening. ______ Links:  Follow James Nash on Instagram @6RanchOutfitters >> Eastmans' Elite Membership Bundle >> Learn about the Bridger Reckon Watch >> Hunt West Tag Application Webinar Series >>

Hunters, Habitat & State Politics: What Wyoming's 2026 Legislative Session Means for You

In this episode, Jaden sits down with Wyoming Wildlife Federation leaders Craig Benjamin, Executive Director, and Jess Johnson, Government Affairs Director, to break down the Wyoming wildlife and hunting issues that actually matter heading into the 2026 legislative session. The conversation starts where it should—hunting stories from the past season—before pulling back the curtain on how wildlife decisions are really made in Wyoming, and why hunters (resident and nonresident alike) have more influence than they think. From landowner tag proposals and invasive grass mitigation to wildlife funding, Game & Fish resources, and the dangers of politicizing science-based wildlife management, this episode connects the dots between policy decisions and real-world hunting opportunity. The group also dives deep into Camo at the Capitol, Wyoming Wildlife Federation's flagship event that teaches hunters how to engage effectively with legislators—without the politics or pressure. Whether you hunt Wyoming every year or just hope to someday, this episode is a reminder that tags, habitat, and opportunity don't protect themselves—and that showing up is how wildlife wins. ___  Links:  Wyoming Wildlife Federation's Camo at the Capitol Event >> About the Wyoming Wildlife Federation >> Hunt West Tag Application Webinar Series >>  Eastmans' Elite Membership Bundle >> Wyoming Wild Sheep Foundation Raffles >>

2025 Wrapped & 2026 Loaded: What Worked, What's Changing, and Where Hunt West Is Headed

In this bonus New Year episode of the Hunt West Podcast, Jaden Bales looks back on an unforgettable 2025—both personally and professionally—and breaks down what actually worked in the field. From helping plan over 50 DIY Western hunts to logging 108 days afield, Jaden shares real numbers, honest success rates, and why a 50% fill rate on mostly opportunity tags is something to be proud of. He dives into the idea of the "snowball effect" in Western hunting—how consistent effort, learning the same places, and stacking skills year after year leads to more opportunity, better animals, and more enjoyable hunts, even when tags don't get punched. Looking ahead to 2026, Jaden lays out exactly how Hunt West Planning is evolving. He explains the clear path forward between Webinars, Hunt West Sessions, and the fully rebuilt Complete Hunt Plan, including what each option is best suited for and who should start where. From lower-cost group application help to A-to-Z, high-touch hunt planning with waypoints, gear checks, and pre-hunt tune-ups, this episode gives listeners a transparent look at how to invest in their hunting without guessing. No Bugles, No Problem: A Wyoming Cow Elk Story

Fresh off a late-season Wyoming cow elk hunt, Jaden breaks down one of the most rewarding—and educational—hunts he's guided in years. What started as a freezer-filling family hunt turned into a masterclass on elk behavior, patience, wind discipline, and why cow elk tags deserve more respect in every Western hunter's long-term strategy. Hunting with a family crew of three tag holders and two observers, this episode walks through three days of hard-earned success in wide-open sage flats and steep mountain terrain. From glassing massive winter herds miles away, navigating public-private boundaries, waiting out bad wind, and executing close-range rifle stalks, this hunt proved that cow elk hunting is freaking awesome.  Along the way, Jaden highlights why late-season cow hunts are incredible teachers: learning terrain, understanding herd movement, adapting when honey holes go dry, and getting real reps that translate directly to future bull hunts. With three cows down in three days—and plenty of laughs, cactus needles, and lessons learned—this episode makes the case that cow elk hunts are one of the best ways to stay sharp while building points and planning future seasons. If you're thinking about elk hunting in 2026, this episode will challenge how you view cow tags—and might convince you they belong front and center in your Western hunting plan. ____ Links & Resources Check out the Wyoming Elk Webinar >> Support Wyoming Wild Sheep & Hunt Stags with Me >> Sign up for: The Argali Clothing Project >> Thanks to Bo DePena, a musician, friend, and avid hunter in Colorado, for the intro and outro for the show.

Walking With Your Eyes: Rifle Elk, Old Mule Deer, and Hunting With Purpose with Derik Henderson

In this episode of the Hunt West Podcast, Jaden sits down with Wyoming hunter Derik Henderson—a guy who quietly stacks big elk and old mule deer without chasing trends or spot-burning country. Derik isn't a guide by trade, but for one special hunt, he's stepping into that role to raise money for the family of his late best friend. The conversation covers far more than just antlers. This episode dives deep into what it actually takes to consistently hunt the top percent of animals on the landscape in a time when elk pressure is heavy and mule deer hunting feels harder than ever. Derik breaks down how he hunts migration-based elk and mule deer, why glassing miles of country beats pounding boot leather, and how many of his biggest animals were killed shockingly close to roads—simply because nobody was looking in the right direction. He explains why patience, timing, and understanding animal behavior matter more than chasing the newest gear or walking endlessly without a plan. The episode also outlines an auctioned Wyoming guided hunt that closes January 2nd, with proceeds going directly to support a widow and two young boys. The hunt offers the chance to pursue a rifle bull elk—and potentially a mule deer—in one of the same areas where Derik has killed multiple 350–370 class bulls over the years. This is an honest, boots-on-the-ground conversation about modern western hunting—where success comes from observation, restraint, and showing up year after year, even when conditions aren't perfect. Inside Guide Life: Hunting Stories of the Good and the Bad

In this episode, Jaden pulls the curtain back on the guide life; how he stumbled into guiding, the wild hunts that shaped him, and the extremes of what really happens when you mix hunters, high expectations, and Mother Nature. He shares the story that launched his guiding career, the absolute worst guided hunt he ever had (yes, it involves shooting the wrong bull), and the hunts that remind him why guiding is still one of the most meaningful things he does. Whether you're a burnt-points elk guy trying to stay in the game, a grey-ghost fanatic obsessed with big mule deer, or a brand-new hunter stepping into the arena for the first time, this episode maps out where you should be looking—and where you might want to stay away from. He also tackles one of the biggest problems in Western hunting today: relying on "honey holes." Jaden lays out why nothing in the West stays the same—wildfire, winterkill, pressure spikes, road changes, predators, development, drought—and why the only thing that actually works is a system you can repeat anywhere, any year. If you want a clearer, smarter way to plan your hunts (without chasing rumor mills or getting smoked by tag systems), this episode is for you. Dad Bod Prevention & Post-Season Recovery with Dr. Rob

https://www.instagram.com/wifiphysio/In this one, I bring on my buddy Dr. Rob Minturn, founder of the Wilderness Fitness Institute, to answer the burning question every hunter has right about now: "How do I recover from hunting season without turning into a busted can of biscuits?" We dig into fixing tight hips, rebuilding strength the right way, why your feet feel like hamburger, when to stretch (and when not to), why foam rolling your IT band is a lie, and how to transition from full-send hunting season to sitting at a desk without wrecking your body. Rob also shares his go-to glute workout, his upcoming mobility guide for scouters and desk workers, and why every hunter should (apparently) get a pedicure. The November Muley Guide: Glassing, Weather, Rut Timing

The mule deer rut is rolling, and in this episode Jaden breaks down what he's seeing across Wyoming and Montana—early rutting in the desert, slower action in the mountains, and how weather is dictating daylight movement right now. He walks through a wild multi-mile stalk on a big Wyoming buck, a one-day Montana strike mission, and why the rut is really a bell curve you have to hunt pocket by pocket. If you're chasing November mule deer, this episode gives you the playbook: how to glass smarter, how to adjust for heat or storms, how to handle pressure, and how to keep your head straight when the plan blows up. The 5-Step Playbook for Planning Next Year's Hunts

Whether you're cleaning up bloody gear or eating tag soup, this is the time of year when every hunter starts thinking ahead. In this solo episode, Jaden breaks down his 5-step system for planning next year's Western hunts — from setting your goals to getting yourself and your gear ready to execute. He covers how to define what kind of hunt you actually want, research tags that fit your goals, truth your ideas on the map, build a realistic game plan, and start prepping now so you're not scrambling next fall. It's equal parts mindset and mechanics — the same planning framework Jaden uses for his own hunts and for Hunt West clients every year. How to Hunt Late-Season Elk in a Roaded Unit: Game Planning with Tyler Bales

In this week's episode, I sit down with my brother, Tyler Bales, to talk about his wife's upcoming late-season Oregon elk hunt: a classic roaded-country challenge where finding unpressured elk takes creativity, patience, and a little local knowledge. We dive into how he scouted a heavily roaded unit with a fresh burn, what he's learning about elk using edges between timber, burns, and private land, and how to hunt smart when you've got family (and a baby) along for the ride. You'll hear us talk through everything from reading sign and choosing glassing knobs, to camping logistics, and how to build an elk plan that balances real-life constraints with solid hunting strategy. If you've ever hunted late-season elk in places where "road access" doesn't necessarily mean "easy elk," this one's for you. ___ Resources & Links Hunt planning services & booking for 2026: Huntwestplanning.com >> Learn about the Argali Clothing Project at Argalioutdoors.com >>  Idaho Tag Draw Webinar — Nov 5 @ 6 PM MT • $47 Seat → Click here for more info Thanks to Bo DePena, a musician, friend, and avid hunter in Colorado, for the intro and outro for the show.

The Pre-Rut Mule Deer Playbook | Solo Round

In this solo round, Jaden breaks down one of his favorite times of year—the pre-rut window when mule deer bucks start slipping out of their hidey holes and showing daylight movement, but haven't gone full rut yet. It's that sweet spot where weather, timing, and patience make or break a hunt. Jaden shares what he's learned from hunting and guiding across the West, including: Premium Max-Point Migration Hunts — what true migration behavior looks like and why sitting tight beats hiking miles. General Tag Late-Season Observations — how pressure and terrain drive mature buck behavior even when rut activity ramps up. Colorado 2020 Pre-Rut Lessons — how one snowy, aspen-covered hunt taught the value of intentional movement and sticking it out. His Real-Time Game Plan — what he's looking for this week while guiding a Wyoming low country tag, from staging bucks to terrain funnels and weather windows. From elevation bands to glassing hard, this episode is a tactical masterclass in hunting the edge between bachelor groups and the rut. Beat the Odds, Burn the Gas: Two Successful Pronghorn Hunts

When you've been hunting with someone for over 25 years, you know the laughs, the screwups, and the grind are just part of the deal. In this episode, Jaden recaps a Wyoming pronghorn hunt with his lifelong friend Kain — a trip filled with highs, lows, and the kind of luck that only comes when you beat 7% odds in the tag draw. Kain flew in from Oregon with a freezer to fill, and the duo went to work chasing antelope across windy plains, dealing with wild weather, wardens, and whitetail detours. Jaden dives into what went right (and wrong) with their tag applications, how the Wyoming pronghorn draw has changed fast, and what he learned from hunting a 14% public-land unit where success required equal parts patience and persistence. From fried heart for lunch to last-minute meat-cooler math at the airport, this hunt was full of classic Hunt West moments — gritty, funny, and real. ____________ In This Episode You'll Learn: Why pronghorn draw odds in Wyoming can surprise even experienced hunters How to build a smarter application strategy for 2026 and beyond The mental grind of hunting low-access units — and how to finally connect The white-flag trick for pronghorn…and what not to do A lesson in packing meat for flights that might save you a couple hundred bucks ____________ Resources & Links Join the New Idaho OTC Elk and Deer Draw Webinar >> Check out the Argali Clothing Project >> Book your 2026 Hunt West Plan or Session >> Thanks to Bo DePena, a musician, friend, and avid hunter in Colorado, for the intro and outro for the show.

From Unfilled Tags to a Giant Bull: The Lessons That Made an Elk Hunter

In this episode of the Hunt West Podcast, Jaden sits down with Hunt West client and now first-time archery elk killer, Anthony Ortiz, to unpack a four-year journey that went from missed chances and blown stalks to punching tags on a giant Colorado bull AND a Wyoming pronghorn—all this season. Anthony opens up about what it really takes to go from hopeful to lethal: The mistakes that taught him more than success ever could (hint: wind and impatience were his biggest teachers) The shooting practice that actually matters—training in awkward, real-world positions How a smart approach to scouting, access, and persistence led to two incredible hunts in the same year Jaden and Anthony also dig into the mental side of elk hunting—the adrenaline dump, the blackouts, the heartbreak, and the payoff when you finally get it right. If you're new to archery elk hunting or just grinding for that first bull, this episode will hit home. Listen for: The moment Anthony realized he had finally done it Why slowing down and thinking for five seconds can change your hunt The best advice he'd give to anyone still chasing their first elk How preparation and planning pay off years down the line Takeaway: Success in elk hunting isn't built in one season—it's the product of failure, reflection, and sticking with it long enough to connect the dots. ____________ Resources & Links Hunt planning services & booking for 2026: Hunt West Planning Website >> Try the AI Hunt Buddy free this fall—get answers to your hunt questions, even when Jaden's off-grid. "I Love it When a Plan Comes Together" | Wyoming Elk Hunt Story

This two-for-one podcast starts with a scouting report from a tent at 10,000 feet and 8 miles deep in the backcountry before Wyoming's general season rifle opener. This gives you a look into the mind of elk hunters the night before season and how to set yourself up for success on opening day. What followed was the full execution of a big mountain elk hunting playbook — managing pressure, weather, mindset, and logistics to fill two tags on nice bulls. From lightning storms and muddy pack-outs to navigating trailheads full of other hunters, this episode breaks down how we found elk in sheep country, and what it took to execute a plan that worked — twice. Topics covered: Managing hunter pressure eight miles deep Why "checking off unknowns" matters in new areas When to walk past elk to find elk How to stay calm when people and weather test you Why mountain bull elk usually stay high, not in the valleys We hope you enjoy this episode to get you stoked for any upcoming rifle elk seasons you may have!  P.S. Late Rutting Elk Hunting Success & Tips | HW Field Report 9.27.2025

In this solo field report, Jaden breaks down the final days of September elk hunting and shares the full story from a recent guided hunt. From bumping into bugling bulls right out of the truck to finally calling in a heavy seven-point for his client Steve, this hunt was a crash course in late-rut elk behavior. You'll hear how two mature bulls in the same unit played completely different games—one running a massive herd like a cage fighter, the other hanging timid on the sidelines after taking his lumps. Jaden walks through how they set up calling sequences, used wind thermals to their advantage, and why patience in the middle of the day can pay off. This episode also looks ahead to the first rifle seasons of October: Why herd bulls and satellites behave differently as September winds down. How to adjust calling strategies for pressured, call-shy elk. What to expect from October storms for both elk and mule deer. Why staying high pays off, even after the first snows. The Mule Deer Double Story: 400" of Antlers on Opening Day with Gray Plunkett

Some hunts you dream about forever. Others just come together in a way you'll never forget. This episode is one of those. Gray and I headed into steep, gnarly mule deer country with a short window, a couple of backup plans, and low expectations. By the end of opening day, we were standing over not one, but two high-country bucks—mine a true giant, and his a gnarly, heavy buck that any hunter would be thrilled with. In this episode, we relive every part of the hunt: The brutal climb in and the storm that almost broke camp. Spotting a bachelor group of bucks and working into range. The logistics of how we hauled two bucks and camp off the mountain. Why mule deer are such addicting animals—and how this hunt stacked up to elk and turkey seasons past. It's not just a hunt recap—it's a story of two good ol' boys working together and chasing deer in country that feels more like sheep hunting than anything else. If you've ever wondered why mule deer have such a hold on western hunters, this story says it all. The Cow Elk Hunters' Playbook | Solo Round

Most folks dream of chasing a screaming bull, but let's be honest—cow elk hunts are where the odds (and the freezers) are stacked in your favor. In this solo round, Jaden breaks down the Cow Elk Playbook—why cow hunts are one of the best opportunities in the West right now, and how to approach them through each phase of the elk's yearly cycle. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why cow elk tags are often the best entry point into elk hunting. Seasonal tactics: Late September (rut): how to use bugles to find cow herds. October: glassing, spotting & stalking, and focusing on security cover. November: tracking herds with storms and hunting the public/private interface. Winter range hunts (Dec–Jan): big herds, access challenges, and how to pull it off. The biggest mistakes hunters make when chasing cows (hint: it's not as easy as some say). Shot discipline when hunting big herds, and how to handle the pack-out. Cow elk hunts aren't consolation prizes—they can be fun, skill-sharpening, meat-in-the-freezer adventures. Whether you're a new elk hunter looking to get "reps," or a seasoned veteran who just wants to hunt more, this episode gives you the playbook to make it happen. Die with Memories, Not Dreams with Chris Atkins

In this episode of the Hunt West Podcast, Jaden sits down with client and now good friend Chris Atkins to trace his rapid journey from adult-onset hunter to fulfilling a lifelong-level dream: an Alaska Dall sheep hunt. Chris didn't grow up hunting. In fact, he didn't pick it up until his late 30s while working as an art curator in Minnesota. What started with pheasants and turkeys quickly expanded into Western big game — antelope and mule deer in Wyoming, a free-range aoudad hunt in Texas, and finally the big one: a Dall sheep hunt in Alaska for his 50th birthday. You'll hear how Chris used each hunt as both practice and preparation for the mountains of Alaska — from learning body awareness crawling after pronghorn, to handling glassing and long-range shots on aoudad, to dialing in gear and fitness for the sheep mountains. Along the way, he shares the mindset, financial discipline, and community support it took to make the dream a reality. This episode is packed with lessons for anyone chasing their own "someday hunt" — whether it's sheep, elk, or just a first trip out West. The Elk Hunting Playbook with Cody Rich

Welcome to September — the month elk hunters live for. In this episode, I sit down with Cody Rich, longtime mentor and host of The Elk Hunt Podcast, to talk through the 201-level elk hunting playbook. We dive into the real differences between a "101 hunter" who's just out walking the woods and a "201 hunter" who consistently finds and kills elk year after year. Cody breaks down what separates the average Joe from the top 10% of elk hunters — and how you can bridge that gap this season. Inside this episode, you'll hear us cover: 🚫 How not to be "Average Joe" on opening weekend 🐂 Why finding people-free country often matters more than finding "perfect elk habitat" 📍 How Cody adapts tactics in pressured units vs. limited-entry hunts 🎯 Tools in the elk hunter's toolbox — when to rely on one skill vs. build new ones 🔥 Contingencies for wildfire, pressure, and weather changes mid-season 🗺️ Backpack hunting, wallows, glassing, and why "diesel sometimes kills more elk than boot leather" 🧠 The mindset shift from chasing opportunity to intentionally picking the skill you want to sharpen Cody also shares stories from his own hunts — from missing bulls on opening day to glassing elk seven miles away with binos — and gives one clear assignment for anyone wanting to level up their elk hunting game this September. No Excuses Hunting: Beating Negativity and Finding Success This Season | Solo Round

In this solo episode of the Hunt West Podcast, Jaden fires up the mic to deliver the pep talk every hunter needs before stepping into the mountains this fall. Jaden pushes back hard on that mindset with a no-excuses, stay-positive approach that will help you make the most of whatever your hunt throws at you. From wildfires and winter kills to snowstorms, hunting pressure, and quiet elk, Jaden shares real-world stories and lessons learned from years in the field—proving that backup plans, grit, and adaptability are what separate those who go home early from those who notch tags and create lasting memories. How to Be a Dialed Backpack Hunter with Brad Brooks of Argali

If you've ever wondered what it really takes to hunt deep in the backcountry—and make it back out in one piece—you'll want to listen to this one. Jaden sits down with Brad Brooks, founder of Argali, to talk all things backpack hunting logistics. From elk vs. mule deer strategies, to hauling meat solo, to common gear mistakes—this conversation is full of hard-earned lessons and straight-shooting wisdom. Brad shares personal stories (including a 7.5-mile elk packout with a camera guy), breaks down his "spoke-and-wheel" base camp method, and dishes on why quilts are overrated and your boots probably suck (unless you found the right ones for you). We hope you enjoy the episode. Watch and Subscribe to Argali's YouTube here >> _____ You can now can tap into my brain without booking a full consulting call. ABOUT THIS SHOW

The Hunt West Podcast is for hunters who'd rather wear out a pair of boots than a YouTube playlist. Most hunting podcasts give you campfire stories, gear hype, or endless tag talk. Hunt West is different. This is applied hunting wisdom — the stuff that actually helps you find critters and fill tags in the wild country west of the 100th meridian.Hosted by Jaden Bales — hunt consultant, mule deer junkie, and professional tag nerd — the show mixes solo riffs, guest conversations, and hard-earned lessons from real hunts.
