Lower Your Expectations (and Other Life Skills)

life is supposed to be neat, balanced, or filtered. In this sharply funny and deeply relatable collection, Montana-based author and humorist Katie Simpson takes listeners on a joyride through everyday chaos—laundry mountains, social-media meltdowns, bad customer service, family drama, and the occasional menopausal moment of rage. With her signature wit and raw honesty, Simpson reminds us that the secret to surviving life’s nonsense isn’t striving for perfection—it’s laughing at it. Through stories of marriage, middle age, tacos, and tactical use of sarcasm, she reveals the freedom that comes when we finally drop the performance and embrace being gloriously human. This book blends humor, heart, and truth in a way that feels like talking to your funniest friend over coffee (or wine). Because lowering your expectations isn’t giving up—it’s choosing peace, perspective, and maybe the last cookie before someone else gets to it.

    What Did You Say?

r 16 years. The idea for the book just hit me out of the blue one day. I was in the middle of my second year of teaching. As I recall, it was a day of multiple, astonishingly dense statements and questions. While in the middle of marveling at a particular set of words of wisdom, I had this thought, “I have to start writing these down”. BING! The light bulb went off, and the idea for the book was born. As time went on and I would hear quotes that I deemed “book worthy”, I would jot them down on a legal pad. Some of these quotes are aided in their humor by what I had to say in response, so I have included a few of those as well. By the time I wrote down the 175th quote, I thought I had enough material to begin typing them up. These are not the stereotypical or well-known teenage phrases.

Life Through the Eyes of a Peon

re to slap the smile off your face and scream, “You’re not crazy — the whole damn system is.” Narrated by Johnny Blue Balls — grease-stained, broke, twice-divorced, and fresh out of fucks — this ain’t your grandma’s audiobook. Go listen to some influencer douchebag in skinny jeans tell you to manifest your dreams. This is for the pissed-off, the paycheck-to-paycheck warriors, the guys who can’t afford therapy but can rebuild an engine blindfolded. Johnny’s not here to guide you. He’s here to remind you that being broke doesn’t make you broken, loyalty still matters, and the ones running this shitshow are more corrupt than a preacher with a private jet. It’s foul-mouthed, furious, funny as hell, and painfully real.

Inside, you'll learn: Each chapter is packed with faux-expert advice, ridiculous curricula, and increasingly chaotic attempts to maintain classroom control—all wrapped in a voice that’s equal parts David Attenborough and sitcom dad. Things I Probably Shouldn't Share

t stick. Usually beginning with: “Okay, I probably shouldn’t tell you this…” Inside are the kinds of stories you only admit in passing: crying because you never got to be the Monopoly dog (and always ended up the thimble), practicing Wonder Woman spins until a ceramic goose lost its wing, hauling cartons of Winstons out of a concert at age eight, getting fired and replaced by an actual stick, and watching a little girl scream “Piglet, it’s me—Trina!” in a Disney parade meltdown you’ll never forget once you picture it. With the dry wit of David Sedaris, the heart of Jenny Lawson, and a dash of Augusten Burroughs, Tom Gloude Whittaker turns awkward childhoods, messy families, bad jobs, strange vacations, and everyday disasters into something hilarious, oddly comforting, and—sometimes—surprisingly moving. These aren’t stories of wisdom. They’re reminders: that the weirdest, most embarrassing memories are often the ones that connect us. And that oversharing, in the right hands, might just be the most human thing of all.
