Why Are We Anxious? on India: A Story in the Making | Ep 50
“Change in behaviour of a child is a classical symptom of something not going well,” says Dr. Subodh Dave, Dean of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. “And if you’re not on social media, you’re an outcast,” adds Prof. JS Bamrah CBE, Senior NHS Consultant Psychiatrist, speaking about the growing pressures facing young people today. At a time when the UK is moving towards phone-free schools and debating stronger protections for children online, the bigger question remains: are we doing enough to understand the pressures, problems, and solutions behind rising anxiety in both children and adults? With 75% of mental illnesses beginning before the age of 24, and loneliness becoming a growing public health concern, this conversation feels more urgent than ever. Marking Mental Health Awareness Week (11-17 May), Why Are We Anxious? on India: A Story in the Making brings together Prof. JS Bamrah CBE and Prof. Subodh Dave in a deeply relevant conversation on: •anxiety, stress and loneliness in modern life• social media pressure, cyberbullying and children’s mental health• the debate around phone-free schools and online safety• how anxiety shows up physically and emotionally• warning signs parents should not ignore• immigrant experiences and culturally sensitive mental health care• stigma around therapy, medication and asking for help• yoga, spirituality, therapy and practical coping tools• kindness, community and why early support matters An honest conversation about the “anxious generation” and what action, awareness and compassion should look like in today’s world. India A Story in Making | The Last Princesses of Punjab | Ep 49
This is history that doesn’t need dramatising. It already surpasses fiction. How do you befriend the very Crown that exiled your family? Born to Maharaja Duleep Singh, the same ruler who, as a child, was made to sign away the Koh-i-Noor, raised in Britain, and moving within the inner circles of the empire that stripped their family of everything the Duleep Singh princesses lived between worlds. Indian heritage. Mixed lineage. Royal blood. And yet, at a time in Britain when women couldn’t vote, Sophia, Catherine and Bamba found their voice and used it to fight for the right of every British woman to be counted and heard. In this episode of India: A Story in the Making, I go inside Kensington Palace’s stunning exhibition The Last Princesses of Punjab, exploring lives that span suffragette activism, exile, empire, identity, and an extraordinary search for belonging. And behind these three women? An equally remarkable lineage. Their mother, Bamba Müller, of Ethiopian and German heritage, raised Christian. And their grandmother, Maharani Jind Kaur, imprisoned by the British, who escaped in disguise and crossed mountains just to hold her son again. These princesses lived through the most seismic chapters of modern history, India’s freedom struggle, the suffragette movement, two World Wars, and more. Their story is inseparable from the story of the age itself. They though, were never just witnesses to history, they were inside it, shaping it, surviving it. Fascinating falls far short of what they lived through. And what they did. ✨ A must-watch for connoisseurs of real-life stories that inspire. 📍 The Last Princesses of Punjab exhibition at Kensington Palace runs until 8 November 2026 ( https://www.hrp.org.uk/kensington-palace/whats-on/the-last-princesses-of-punjab/ ) EPISODE LIVE NOW ON: 📺 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@loveenatandonproductions 🎙️ Podcast – Smart Link: https://bingepods.com/podcast/podcast-rn7moe 💬 Join Our Discord Community: https://discord.gg/p2UYt9uV5d Learn more about your ad choices. Two Women. One Mission. | Ep 48
In 1919, as India stood on the edge of revolution, another quieter struggle was unfolding the fight for women to be heard, to be counted, to vote. This episode tells the remarkable story of Herabai and Mithan Tata, a mother and daughter who travelled from India to London, studied at the London School of Economics, and stood at the heart of a global movement for women’s rights. At a time when the future of India was being debated in British Parliament, they ensured one thing was clear, women would not be left out. Filmed between Parliament Square and LSE, this episode explores a powerful, often forgotten connection: how Indian and British women were part of the same struggle, shaping each other’s fight for equality across borders. Featuring insights from LSE archivist Lisa McQuillan, we uncover the documents, the voices, and the legacy of two women whose impact is still felt today. Because the fight for women’s rights was never just one nation’s story, it was always universal. Eclipsing the West | Sir Vince Cable | Ep 47
“Trump’s attack on Iran was an act of extraordinary stupidity.” In Episode 47 of India: A Story in the Making, Sir Vince Cable, former UK Business Secretary, former Liberal Democrat leader, and now Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics and in Shenzhen, China, joins me for a wide-ranging, candid, and no-holds-barred conversation. We talk about Iran, Trump, the fading power of the West, and the rise of India and China and the critical mistakes that could still slow India’s growth, from its missed manufacturing moment to the challenges of reform in a complex democracy. Cable reflects on why he believes India is already a significantly bigger power than Britain in many ways, why globalisation is breaking down, and whether institutions like the UN and NATO can still do the job they were created for. We also get into the darker undercurrents of power in Britain — Epstein, Prince Andrew, Peter Mandelson, along with Britain’s colonial hangover, Westminster’s blind spots on India, and what a new world order could look like by 2050. Drawing from his book Eclipsing the West: China, India and the Forging of a New World, shortlisted for the Westminster Book Awards and soon to be published in India by Juggernaut, Cable lays out a world in transition, and the choices that will define what comes next. By April 2025, India had the world’s second-largest road network, and NHAI built 5,614 km of National Highways in FY 2024–25, beating its 5,150 km target (Gov. of India data). There is still more to do, with 13,400 km more in the pipeline over the next three years. New Campus Conversations strand of India: A Story in the Making.
New Campus Conversations strand of India: A Story in the Making. In this episode, we ask Gen Z what the “trad wife” trend means to them and whether young men are becoming more traditional while young women move in the opposite direction. This comes against the backdrop of a global study across 29 countries by Ipsos and King’s College London, which reveals something striking, nearly a third of Gen Z men believe a wife should always obey her husband. But what do young people themselves think? From King’s College London to the London School of Economics and beyond, we speak to students in honest, unfiltered conversations about dating, gender roles, independence, money, and changing expectations in relationships. From who should pay on a first date…to whether marriage is still the goal…to what feminism really means today…this is a generation negotiating love, power, and equality in real time. And in India, the story becomes even more layered, where rising feminism coexists with deeply rooted traditions. 💬 What do you think? Are Gen Z Men and Women Becoming Incompatible?
A new global study on gender attitudes by King’s College London and Ipsos, covering 29 countries and more than 23,000 people aged 18-75, raises some fascinating and worrying questions. ( REPORT: https://www.kcl.ac.uk/news/almost-a-third-of-gen-z-men-agree-a-wife-should-obey-her-husband ; https://www.kcl.ac.uk/assets/news/iwd-2026-global-charts-final.pdf ) The findings really got me thinking. If Gen Z men are becoming more traditional, in some cases even more traditional than their grandfathers while Gen Z women are becoming more progressive and identifying as feminists, what happens next? Will they struggle to find partners? And what does this widening divide mean for relationships, marriage, and the future of gender equality? In this episode of India: A Story in the Making, Leaving Men Behind, I sit down with Professor Heejung Chung, Director of the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at King’s College London, to unpack the findings. We talk about: • Why Gen Z men appear to be moving toward more traditional gender attitudes • Whether the “tradwife” trend on social media reflects reality • Why many young women feel men have not kept pace with change • What this could mean for relationships and family life • And why India emerges as one of the most fascinating, and complex cases in the study Some of the findings about India genuinely blew me away. If gender roles, expectations, and the changing dynamics between men and women in the Gen Z world, and how Gen X, Boomers and Millennials fit into this shift interests you, then Leaving Men Behind, is the episode for you. A global study by King’s College London’s Global Institute for Women’s Leadership and Ipsos surveyed 23,000 people aged 16–75 across 29 countries. And some of the findings totally blew me away! Are Gen Z men becoming more traditional?Do Gen Z women actually prefer traditional roles more than we think? And why does India stand out in some of the most interesting ways? Released to mark International Women’s Day, the study suggests attitudes toward gender roles may be shifting, sometimes in unexpected directions. In this episode, I speak with the woman behind this remarkable research, including their work examining the “tradwife” phenomenon, a social-media trend romanticising traditional gender roles that has been exploding online, particularly on platforms like TikTok. Both, Not Half. A British Indian Story: Identity, Innovation & Belonging | Ep 44
By 2040, the world could be dealing with a wave of retired batteries, enough to fill London’s Wembley Stadium 23 times over, every single year… to what made a child feel he’s “not the right look.” This episode really is a rollercoaster of many themes woven into one episode of a British Indian journey: Both, Not Half. Dr Amrit Chandan- scientist, innovator, and CEO of Lorefully, a Birmingham boy who had to reset his A-levels, then went on to be recognised as a Forbes 30 Under 30 tech founder and win the Hawley Award for Engineering Innovation. We cut through the noise on climate and tech: the truth about EVs, the battery debate, and what “end-of-life” really means-reuse, recycling, circular design, not just binning the problem. Then we move into identity: what it feels like to be British Indian, the funny stereotypes, myths about Indian origin people in the UK, to figuring out belonging when roots are spread across three different continents across India-Kenya-UK. How a multi-generational home can feel almost radical in a world built around the nuclear family. We even get into arranged marriage, modern love… and Amrit’s one amongst many magic tricks that has kept his own marriage rock solid. Ahead of the India–AI Impact Summit in New Delhi this February, I speak to two of the UK’s most eminent voices in AI and healthcare — Prof Prokar Dasgupta OBE and Prof Ajay Shah (King’s College London) — about India’s contribution to global AI innovation, especially in healthcare, and why the country stands at a crucial juncture. Episode goes live on 23 February. Until then, here’s a small moment of joy and laughter — the kind that makes conversations (and life) worth it. My Mom Thought I’d Joined a Punk Rock Band | Shaunak Rishi Das
Hindu thought approaches life through knowledge (vidya), choice, and personal responsibility. Western theological thinking often frames life through sin and salvation. These are not competing truths, they are alternate philosophical traditions for understanding life, consciousness, and human agency. When one worldview is filtered through the lens of another, nuance can get lost and so can understanding. What happens when someone born into a Western Christian world encounters Hindu philosophy? That’s exactly what the episode, “My Mom Thought I’d Joined a Punk Rock Band” is all about Shaunaka Rishi Das, Director of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studieson India: A Story in the Making. One of my most insightful conversations with someone who considers himself an Irish Catholic Hindu. If you liked this video, the full conversation is a must-watch. Curiosity knocked me out this year — in the best way.
Here’s a little year-ender that isn’t about what made headlines… but what people quietly went looking for. Headlines tell you what happened. Searches tell you what people felt. So while the news cycle kept spinning, I wanted to see what was actually trending in people’s minds — the shifts in perception, the sudden obsessions, the new questions. In this short, snappy episode, we follow the searches that surged in 2025: about India in Britain and across the world, and within India too… with one wildcard entry that might just make your Christmas dinner conversation a little more fun. And on that note — Happy New Year. Full episode “How India Featured in Google Trends 2025: Spikes, Shifts & Surprises?” #LIVE NOW on : YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@loveenatandonproductions ️ Podcast – Smart Link: https://bingepods.com/podcast/podcast-rn7moe Join Our Discord Community: https://discord.gg/p2UYt9uV5d Please do like SUBSCRIBE AND CONNECT ON DISCORD. Next Maradona Can Be from India: An Unfiltered Conversation with Kavita Khanna | Ep 41
Love does what logic can’t. Otherwise, how does a woman not even from Punjab end up changing the fortunes of people in a border constituency This is the story of Kavita Daftary—barrister, athlete, swimmer and squash player, LSE- and Harvard-trained—falling in love with Vinod Khanna, the superstar-turned-MP, and building a bond that went far beyond romance: a shared purpose toserve, to show up, and to leave a place better than they found it. That purpose leads to Gurdaspur, Punjab—on the India–Pakistan border—a region of enormous beauty and potential, but also a hard reality shaped by cross-border narcotics smuggling. The Border Security Force (BSF) has publicly reported that along the Punjab border (Jan 1–Nov 30, 2025) it seized 272 drones coming from Pakistan and recovered 367.8 kg heroin, 19 kg ICE (methamphetamine) and 14.5 kg opium. Kavita’s answer is to turn pain into purpose. Through the Kavita & Vinod Khanna Foundation (KVKF), she’s scaling daily sport across villages—what began in 20 villages has grown to 167+, with football and volleyball programs giving children (and families) a different rhythm, a different identity, and a real alternative. Remarkably, 22% of participants are girls—a quiet revolution in itself. To keep this momentum growing, Kavita says she needs people power—support in funds or in-kind (kits, footballs, cones, gear), and volunteers who can share skills and time. No Spin, Straight Bat with Murali Kartik – Love, Life & Cricket on India: A Story in the Making
Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni have both carved history with their contrasting styles — fire and calm, aggression, and ice. But what does an insider really think of the two? That’s exactly what we ask Murali Kartik, India’s classical left-arm spinner known for his skill, grit and sharp cricketing mind, in this High Five India segment from the episode “No Spin, Straight Bat with Murali Kartik – Love, Life & Cricket,” on India: A Story in the Making. Cricket is always in season in India — a religion, many say — and now the Indian women’s team has once again put the country firmly on the global stage with their phenomenal rise. Which makes it the perfect moment to listen to a man who has worn the India jersey, played under greats, and today analyses the game with disarming honesty. I’m Not an Actor
On India: A Story in the Making, we often talk about how stories travel — and this time, we lived it across three continents. The film “I’m Not an Actor,” directed by Aditya Kripalani and starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Chitrangada Satarupa, was shot across continents — simultaneously in India and Germany over 28 days, with both actors performing live through a screen. So, it felt fitting that on India: A Story in the Making, we too brought together three continents — I was in London, Nawazuddin and Chitrangada joined from Mumbai, and Aditya spoke from Germany. Technology, put to good use, brought us together for a truly global conversation. An Indo-German collaboration, the film reflects a larger cinematic shift. Cinema has always been the world’s cultural bridge — a soft power that connects hearts before borders. No wonder Prime Minister Starmer, on his recent visit to India, announced major Indo-UK collaborations with Yash Raj Films, while Germany too has opened its arms to international partnerships through its new 2024–25 Film Funding Reforms— increasing grants and tax incentives of up to 30% to attract global productions. For Indian filmmakers, it’s a wider canvas than ever before. With India’s cinema audience among the largest in the world, it’s no surprise that Indian stories are finding new homes and audiences abroad. “I’m Not an Actor” premiered in the UK at the Bradford Film Festival and is now screening in select VUE, ODEON, and independent cinemas across the country —one more story reminding us that cinema continues to bridge continents, one frame at a time. High Five India | Shaunaka Rishi Das
What happens when Hindu philosophy is viewed through a Western lens? And why did the very land where this thought was born lose the vocabulary to study it? Shaunaka Rishi Das — founder of the first Centre for Hindu Studies at Oxford — explains how generations grew up connecting to Hinduism with emotion, but not intellect. Now, as India begins to open its own centres — from Doon University to Delhi — the question remains: Can India reclaim its wisdom before it’s reinterpreted for the world? This is the HighFive section from my conversation with Shaunaka Rishi Das — a man whose journey from Ireland to India is one of faith, philosophy, and self-discovery. Episode 40 of India: A Story in the Making — “My Mom Thought I’d Joined a Punk Rock Band.”
How did the first ever Centre for Hindu Studies open in Oxford — and not in India? Hinduism and Hindu Studies — what’s the difference? One is often approached with emotion, the other with intellect. And perhaps that’s why every time the Bhagavad Gita is proposed to be part of the syllabus, it sparks debate. I was deeply struck when Shaunaka Rishi Das, the man behind opening the world’s first Centre for Hindu Studies, explained this distinction. In our pursuit of religion, somewhere along the way, we may have forgotten its intellectual roots — the knowledge, philosophy, and wisdom it stands for. As Shaunaka points out, when Nehru kept religion out of education, generations grew up without the vocabulary to study or debate faith — and faith became feeling, not understanding. Today, we often see Hinduism through a Western lens, forgetting that it carries an entirely different way of thinking about life, consciousness, and the world. Can global thought truly be called global if Hindu Studies — with its alternative wisdom and philosophy — remains absent from the conversation? Diwali Special | “My Mom Thought I’d Joined a Punk Rock Band.” | The Story of an Irish Catholic Hindu: Where Faith Meets Philosophy | Shaunaka Rishi Das
In Irish Catholic’s journey to Hinduism. Can faith be inherited or must it be discovered?Born and raised in a small Irish town, Shaunaka Rishi Das (born Timothy Kiernan) grew up with no connection to India or Hinduism. Yet his life’s path led him to Hindu philosophy, discipline, and devotion, a journey so unexpected that his mother once thought he’d joined a punk rock band when he returned home with a shaved head. In this Diwali special of India: A Story in the Making, we step away from rituals and celebrations to ask deeper questions that many of us quietly carry: If God exists, why is there so much suffering? Can faith exist without religion? Is Hinduism a belief system — or a way of inquiry? And why is Hindu thought often missing from global conversations on meaning, wellbeing, and sustainability? This calm, reflective conversation with Shaunaka Rishi Das, the first Hindu Chaplain at Oxford University and Founding Director of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, challenged my understanding of the faith I was born into, and left me with questions that lingered long after the cameras stopped rolling. Some food for thought this Diwali — along with the mithai. Episode 40: Mum Thought I’d Joined A Punk Rock Band. Happy Diwali to all ! “My Mom Thought I’d Joined a Punk Rock Band.” How did Timothy Kiernan, a boy from Wexford, Ireland—with no connection to India or Hinduism—become Shaunaka Rishi Das, Director of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies? Founded in 1997, the Centre was among the first institutions in the world devoted to Hindu Studies. His journey is a story of the soul — of a man from rural Ireland who discovered his spiritual home in the philosophy, discipline, and love of Hindu thought — despite growing up without any ties to India. In just one conversation, he taught me more about what Hindu Studies truly means, why it matters today, and why we need it in the global narrative. Special High Five India with Shruti Merchant
High Five India | South Asian Heritage Month Special It’s South Asian Heritage Month — running from 18 July to 17 August — a time to celebrate, commemorate, and reflect on the rich tapestry of South Asian histories and identities. First established in the UK in 2020, the dates mark two defining moments: 18 July, when the Indian Independence Act received royal assent, and 17 August, when the Radcliffe Line was published — drawing the borders between India, Pakistan, and modern-day Bangladesh. Today, over 5 million people in the UK — roughly 7.5% of the population — are of South Asian heritage. In England and Wales alone, nearly 1 in 10 people identified as Asian British in the 2021 census, making South Asians the largest Asian ethnic group in the UK. To mark this vibrant month, India: A Story in the Making presents a special High Five India feature on Shruti Merchant— the powerhouse choreographer behind Come Fall in Love: The DDLJ Musical, now lighting up the stage in Manchester. Carrying forward a dazzling legacy — her sister is the iconic Vaibhavi Merchant, known for timeless Bollywood hits like “Dholi Taaro Dhol Baaje” — Shruti is taking Indian storytelling global, one spectacular step at a time. Because truly, nothing celebrates South Asian culture more than our food, our films, and our music — and no wonder Bollywood’s eternal love story Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge continues to win hearts, from Mumbai to Manchester.
