    EP 38: The Doors 🚪

In this message, we look at the beginning of Moses’ story and how God opens doors that no one can shut. Before Moses ever parted the Red Sea, God was already working through the chaos, preparing him for a calling he did not fully understand yet.Key takeaways:God can use even chaos as preparationThe enemy uses fear, doubt, and insecurity to keep us from walking through God’s open doorsMoses asked, “Who am I?” and God answered, “I will be with you”Your sin does not cancel your callingGod considers us trustworthy for His serviceThe purpose of our calling is to build up the body of ChristThis episode is a reminder that God has placed open doors before us. The question is whether we will trust Him enough to walk through. This message was recorded at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado, CA, a space so kindly gifted to us on Saturday mornings by Rev. EP 37: Seen vs. Unseen

In this message, we talk about what the unseen really is: faith.Using Mark 2 and the story of the paralyzed man carried by four friends, we look at how faith is more than a feeling. Faith trusts God’s plan, takes action, keeps its eyes on Jesus, and helps carry others when they are weak.Key takeaways:We walk by faith, not by sightEven mustard-seed faith can move mountainsReal faith does not just believe, it actsJesus cares about the heart firstStrong community and brotherhood matter in the walk with ChristYour faith can help carry someone else to JesusWe also look at Hebrews 11, the Hall of Faith, and the challenge it gives us:Will we trust God in what we can see, or in what we cannot? This episode is a reminder to keep your eyes on Jesus, trust Him through the chaos, and walk by faith when life feels uncertain. This message was recorded at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado, CA, a space so kindly gifted to us on Saturday mornings by Rev. EP 36: External vs. Internal

In this message, we walk through the story of Balaam in Numbers 22–24 and ask a bigger question: what happens when someone looks right on the outside, but their heart is divided on the inside?Balaam speaks God’s words and blesses Israel instead of cursing them, but the full story shows something deeper. His actions looked obedient externally, yet internally his heart was still drawn toward reward, compromise, and divided motives.Key focus points:Why Balaam’s journey matteredThe meaning behind the talking donkeyWhy God’s anger showed up on the roadWhy blessing kept coming instead of cursingWhat Balaam’s ending reveals about the heartBig takeaway:This episode is a warning against living with a divided heart. You can say the right things, look spiritual on the outside, and still be drifting inwardly. God is not after surface-level obedience. He wants full surrender.Do not be lukewarm.Do not live externally for God while internally serving the world. What is in your heart will show up in the end. This message was recorded at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado, CA, a space so kindly gifted to us on Saturday mornings by Rev. EP 35: A Sit Down with John | God Was in the Detours

In this powerful first testimony episode, John shares his journey from feeling lost and directionless to discovering purpose, faith, and resilience.Growing up in New Jersey, John chased identity through sports, relationships, partying, and college life, only to find himself deeper in confusion and emptiness. After a series of life-altering moments including a near-death experience and unexpected encounters that pointed him toward God, John began searching for meaning beyond the distractions of the world. That search eventually led him to pursue the Navy SEAL pipeline and later face the crushing disappointment of leaving BUD/S. Through failure, anger, and time in the Phoenix program, John wrestled with identity, purpose, and faith. But God wasn’t finished with his story. In this episode, Duke and John talk about:Growing up chasing identity through sports and relationshipsThe emptiness of partying, drugs, and temporary escapesA mysterious encounter that may have saved John’s lifeDiscovering faith and the slow transformation that followedThe pressure and reality of BUD/S trainingThe emotional impact of quitting and life in the Phoenix programFinding purpose again through faith, discipline, and brotherhoodHow God redirected John’s path back to San Diego and toward a new missionJohn’s story is a reminder that failure does not define you, and that God often works through the detours we never planned.Sometimes the reset we fear is the very thing that leads us where we were meant to go.If you want to support Iron Phoenix head to https://www.ironphoenix.org/

    EP 34: Confronted, Not Convinced

In this message, we talk about the difference between being convinced (talking yourself into something that feels “right” in the moment) and being confronted (God shining a light on what is actually happening, so you can reset and heal).Using Saul’s story, we see how someone can be deeply motivated, disciplined, and even sincerely convinced they are “doing the right thing” while walking completely in the wrong direction. Then Jesus steps in, confronts him, and everything changes.Core story: Saul (later Paul) in Acts • Highly educated, trained under a top rabbi, zealous for God • Convinced Christianity is dangerous, becomes relentless in destroying the church • Present at Stephen’s stoning and approves the persecution • Confronted by Jesus on the road to Damascus, blinded for three days • Not punishment, but a forced pause, a humbling silence, and a reset • Ananias is sent to him, Saul receives sight, is filled with the Holy Spirit, and is baptizedKey Scriptures: • Acts 22:3 — Saul’s background and training • Acts 8:3 — Saul destroys the church, house to house • Acts 7:54–58 — Stephen’s stoning, Saul’s approval • Acts 9:1–19 — confrontation on the road, blindness, Ananias, baptism • 1 Corinthians 15:9–10 — “least of the apostles” but grace defines him • 1 Timothy 1:15–16 — “worst of sinners” yet shown mercy as an exampleBig takeaways: • Sometimes God does not slow you down, He knocks you down, not to destroy you, but to keep you from destroying yourself. • Being confronted can feel uncomfortable, but it is often love in action, not condemnation. • Your past does not cancel your purpose. Saul was still called a chosen instrument. • God redirects what feels “wasted” in you and uses it for good. Nothing is wasted. • You are not trash, not too far gone, not disqualified. You are loved, chosen, and called.Bottom line:Do not stay convinced in the wrong direction. Let God confront you, reset you, and remind you who you are. This message was recorded at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado, CA, a space so kindly gifted to us by Rev. EP 33: Perseverance… and What Comes After

In this sermon, we start with a simple question: perseverance is powerful, but what’s the missing piece that carries you through when the fog is thick and the “why” feels unanswered?Using the story of Noah’s Ark, the quote “By perseverance, the snail reached the ark,” and the truth that God never designed us to do life alone, this episode connects perseverance with something deeper: community, support, and God’s presence in the fire.Key Scriptures:Genesis 6:19–20 — two of every creature, even the “small ones”Genesis 2:18 — “It is not good for man to be alone”1 Peter 5:8 — the enemy prowls, looking to devourEcclesiastes 4:9–10 — two are better than one, help each other upProverbs 27:17 — iron sharpens ironDaniel 3 — the furnace, and the fourth man in the fireWhat the silence tries to tell you:You have to carry everything aloneYour thoughts go unchallengedFear gets louderShame gets heavierHope fades fasterBig takeaway:Perseverance matters, but you were never meant to walk through trials alone. God gives you brothers and sisters to strengthen you, and He is the One who steps into the furnace with you. There may have been three in the fire, but there was also a fourth, and He is still present today. This message was recorded at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado, CA, a space so kindly gifted to us by Rev. EP 32: Truth

Truth doesn’t just inform you, it sets you free. In this sermon, we build off last week’s message on sin and go deeper into what it means to actually throw off what entangles you and walk in freedom. We talk about how sin doesn’t only “make life hard,” it distorts your mind, your identity, and your direction. It clings closely, traps you, and convinces you that you’ll never change. But Scripture says otherwise.Key Scriptures:Matthew 18:1–9 — deal seriously with what causes you to stumbleHebrews 12:1–2 — throw off sin first, then run your raceMatthew 1:21 — Jesus came to save us from sin firstActs 2:38 / Acts 22:16 — repent, be baptized, and wash your sins awayBig takeaways:Freedom starts with a decision: live or dieThe enemy’s strategy is deception, but truth exposes the lieYou won’t become perfect overnight, but you can fight differently when you understand what Jesus already didIf you’ve felt trapped, stuck, or like your sin is “too strong,” this episode is a reminder: truth changes the fight. Get rid of what entangles you, fix your eyes on Jesus, and run the race marked out for you. This message was recorded at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado, CA, a space so kindly gifted to us by Rev. EP 31: A New Resolution

Every January, people make resolutions—better habits, better discipline, better routines. But what if the most important resolution isn’t self-improvement, but freedom? In this episode, we confront the reality of sin—not as something we merely manage or tolerate, but something Christ has already defeated. Through Romans 6, 1 Corinthians 15, Matthew 18, and Psalm 51, we uncover a powerful truth: believers are no longer bound to sin—we died with Christ and rose with Him.We talk about:Why sin feels overwhelming and controllingHow shame keeps people hiding from GodWhy Jesus doesn’t ask us to manage sin, but to cut it offThe difference between religious behavior and true holinessWhat it means to live separated, not strivingThis message reframes holiness—not as rule-keeping, but as pursuing Jesus with freedom, humility, and confidence. Sin no longer owns you. You are clean, forgiven, and called to walk boldly in the life God has already secured for you.Resolution this year: stop treating sin like a pet—and start walking in the freedom Christ already won.Visit IronPhoenix.org to learn how you can get involved and see the incredible people already making an impact through this movement.

    EP 30 Opportunities with God

Everything happens for a reason—but what if one of those reasons is opportunity? This episode explores the truth that God is always near, not distant or waiting on the other side of our struggles. From discomfort and chaos to heaviness, confusion, and pain, Scripture shows that every hard place carries an invitation to encounter God in a deeper way.We walk through moments where suffering becomes growth, chaos turns into peace, heaviness into strength, confusion into wisdom, and pain into love—not because life is easy, but because God is present. This message challenges us to shift perspective:Who are you becoming on the other side of what you’re walking through?God is the potter. We are the clay. And even in suffering, He is shaping something purposeful. This message was recorded at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado, CA, a space so kindly gifted to us by Rev. EP 29: Dwelling Place

Dwelling PlaceThis episode takes us into Revelation 4, where John is invited into heaven and immediately sees the throne of God. We slow down to look at what the throne represents—God’s holiness, authority, and presence—and how everything in heaven revolves around it.Then we bring it home.Scripture shows that God doesn’t only reign from heaven—He desires to dwell in the human heart. Just as the throne is the center of all reality in heaven, the heart becomes the center of direction, worship, and allegiance in our lives.Who sits on the throne of your heart determines what flows from it.This message is an invitation to examine who rules within—and to surrender the throne to God.This message was recorded at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado, CA, a space so kindly gifted to us by Rev. EP28: Do We Have a Cloak?

This week, we dove into one of the most powerful symbols in Scripture — the cloak, or mantle, of Elijah. In 1 Kings 19 and 2 Kings 2, Elijah places his cloak on Elisha — a simple act that changes everything. That single gesture represented authority, calling, God’s presence, and divine protection. And when Elisha picked up the fallen cloak after Elijah was taken up to heaven, it marked the passing of anointing and power. But what does that mean for us today?Just as Elisha carried Elijah’s mantle, we now carry the Spirit of God within us. The Holy Spirit is our cloak — unseen, but powerful. It covers, empowers, and calls us to live differently. We explored:✨ The four meanings of the cloak — authority, presence, calling, and protection.🔥 How the mantle passed from Elijah to Elisha mirrors Jesus passing His Spirit to His disciples.💨 Why the cloak isn’t just a garment we wear, but a Spirit we carry everywhere we go.❤️ And what it means to “put on” this spiritual covering in our daily lives — walking in the fullness of the calling God has placed on us.Elijah’s cloak was a shadow of what believers now carry:You already wear your cloak — it’s in your heart, your obedience, and your faith.Don’t turn back to what you’ve left behind. Walk boldly in your calling.Scripture References: • 1 Kings 19:19–21 • 2 Kings 2:1–15 • Acts 1:8 • John 14:17 • Ephesians 4:24 • Psalm 91:4 • Colossians 1:27, 3:14 • Matthew 28:18–20 • John 20:21–22📍This message was recorded at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado, CA, a space so kindly gifted to us by Rev. EP 27: Autopilot: When You’re Functioning but Not Feeling

Have you ever felt like you’re just… going through the motions? You wake up, work, scroll, sleep — repeat. You’re functioning, but not feeling. You’re alive, but not living. In this week’s message, we explore what happens when your heart goes on autopilot — when emotional, spiritual, and mental numbness take over — and how God gently meets us there to restore what’s gone quiet inside.Through the stories of Job, David, and Elijah, we see three powerful portraits of people who loved God but still reached breaking points of exhaustion, silence, and despair. And yet, each found that when words ran out, God’s presence remained. You’ll hear:Why numbness isn’t a lack of faith — it’s often where healing begins. How God responds to burnout and brokenness with compassion, not condemnation. What to do when you’re surviving but not thriving. The practical “swaps” that lead from coping to true spiritual restoration. We also marked our fourth Saturday gathering at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado, CA, a space so graciously gifted by Rev. Michael Murphy. Week after week, God is building something beautiful in this community — reminding us that even when we feel numb, He’s not done.If you’ve been stuck in autopilot — emotionally drained, spiritually distant, or just tired of pretending you’re fine — this episode is your reminder:God doesn’t numb; He restores. He’s ready to meet you right where you are and bring life back to your heart. Here are a few key notes from the sermon slides written out for easy reference:When We Feel Numb…What God Offers Instead…1. EP 26: The Weight of Love: A Walk Through the Crucifixion

This week, we walk slowly and reverently through the crucifixion of Jesus Christ — the most pivotal moment in human history and the ultimate expression of love.In Mark 15:21–41, we see the depth of what Jesus endured — physically, emotionally, and spiritually. He was betrayed by a friend, abandoned by His followers, mocked, beaten, and nailed to a cross. Yet, every lash, every thorn, every drop of blood was driven by love.In this message, we explore:The emotional agony of betrayal, abandonment, and denial. The physical suffering of the cross — from the scourging to the crown of thorns. The spiritual burden Jesus bore as He carried the sins of the world. The love that fueled it all — love for the Father, and love for us.The powerful symbol of Simon of Cyrene carrying the cross behind Jesus — a living picture of discipleship. We also celebrated our third Saturday gathering at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado, CA, a space so graciously gifted by Rev. Michael Murphy. Each week, God continues to move through this ministry, and this message is a reminder of the heart behind it all — love that endures every cross. If you’ve ever questioned your worth, this is your invitation to see the proof of your value — written in blood, stretched out on a cross. Love is the reason. Love is the why.

EP 25: Called to Be Different: The Spirit That Sets Us Apart

What does it really mean to be different? The world uses that word to label people as strange, odd, or abnormal. But God uses it to call us unique, distinct, exceptional, and set apart. In this episode, we unpack what it means to live by the Spirit — who He is, His nature, and what He does in the life of a believer. From guiding us in truth to empowering us with spiritual gifts, the Holy Spirit transforms us to be different in the way God intended. You’ll hear about:Why the Holy Spirit is not just a “force” but a person — part of the Trinity. How His presence indwells, guides, empowers, and transforms us.Why being called “different” by the world is actually confirmation you’re walking with Christ. The gifts He equips us with to advance God’s kingdom. This message was shared during our second Saturday gathering at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado, CA, a space so generously gifted by Rev. Michael Murphy for Iron Phoenix to meet weekly. If you’ve ever felt out of place in this world, remember: the Spirit is shaping you to be set apart — not strange, but Spirit-filled.

EP 24: Crossing Your Jordan: Courage in the Face of Fear

What’s your Jordan? That place of fear, struggle, or hardship that feels too wide, too deep, too strong to cross? In this episode, we dive into Joshua 1–4 and the story of Israel stepping into the Jordan River — carrying the ark of God’s presence straight into the waters. We also share a special milestone: this was our very first Saturday gathering at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado, CA, a space so generously gifted to us by Rev. Michael Murphy. What a reminder that God always makes a way, even in the details of where we meet together. In this message, you’ll hear:Why God’s command to “be strong and courageous” isn’t a suggestion — it’s a promise of His presence. How loving God outshines even the fiercest temptation or sin.Why your “stones of remembrance” matter — for you, your family, and the next generation. How to recognize God’s faithfulness even while you’re still waiting in the current. If you’re standing at the edge of something that feels impossible, this is your reminder: the same God who parted the Jordan is with you wherever you go. EP 23: Praying When You Don’t Know How

Have you ever wondered, “How do I actually pray?” You’re not alone. Even Jesus’ disciples once asked, “Lord, teach us to pray.”In this episode of the Iron Phoenix Podcast, we unpack what it means to learn prayer—not as a performance, but as a posture. Jesus Himself gave us words to start with, and we explore how pre-made prayers, Scripture, Psalms, and even songs can become anchors when we feel tired, unwell, or spiritually dry. You’ll hear about:Why memorized prayers (like the Lord’s Prayer) still hold life-changing powerHow prayer becomes refuge, strength, and our true battlefieldWhy there’s no “wrong” way to pray—just the need to keep showing upPractical ways to build a daily rhythm of prayer, even in busy or exhausting seasonsThe ultimate aim of prayer: not to master a checklist, but to be mastered by God’s love and set freeWhether you’re just starting out or deepening your prayer life, this is an invitation to step into the quiet power of union with God.Visit ironphoenix.org to join the movement and support what God is doing in San Diego. EP:22 Our Father – A Deeper Look at the Lord’s Prayer

We’ve all heard it before—on the field before a game, in a church pew, or memorized from childhood. But how often do we actually understand the Lord’s Prayer? In this episode, we slow things down to take a deep dive into the most well-known prayer in Scripture. Jesus gave us a framework not just for prayer, but for how to see God—how to approach Him, trust Him, and partner with Him in everyday life.We unpack the four powerful sections of Matthew 6:9–13:Our Father in Heaven – What does it mean to see God as Abba, our loving Father?Hallowed Be Your Name – What happens when we worshipfully enjoy God’s presence instead of treating Him like a vending machine?Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done – How can our prayers truly make a difference in the world around us?Daily Bread, Forgiveness, & Deliverance – Why prayer is not just asking, but aligning. We also explore how false images of God—like thinking of Him as an angry judge or distant deity—can hinder our relationship with Him. This episode reminds us that prayer isn’t just something we do in desperation; it’s a way to delight in a Father who’s closer than the air we breathe. If you’ve ever felt like prayer was confusing or mechanical, this one’s for you. There’s a moment at the end where we open up a live conversation about what this prayer means for the guys in our group—don’t miss it.Let this message encourage you to pray with fresh perspective and boldness. EP 21: The Real You: When Comfort Breaks, Greatness Wakes

What happens when everything comfortable is stripped away—when you're exhausted, empty, and faced with the real you?In this powerful follow-up to last week’s episode on idols, Duke drills deep into one we don’t talk about enough: comfort. This week’s message is raw, fired-up, and filled with truth about what happens when we trade spiritual grit for ease—and what it really means to stand up and fight when all you want to do is quit. You’ll hear:Why comfort is deceptive—and how it lulls you into complacency, even in your faithWhat the Bible says about exhaustion and how it reveals who you really areHow to recognize the inflection point—the decision moment between fighting or foldingWhat Samson’s final stand teaches us about comeback power in your weakest momentHow to daily put on the armor of God and choose your new self over the old oneWhy greatness isn’t born in easy places—but in the grind, in the suffering, and in the surrenderThis one will stir your soul and make you ask:👉 What version of me shows up when comfort is gone?👉 Do I fold in the face of fear… or fight with everything I’ve got?Duke breaks down 5 core truths from a quote that rocked him during the week—and ties them to Scripture, real-life reflection, and a clear call to spiritual arms. You were made to soar like an eagle. You were made to fight. And the real you? EP 20: Water vs. Living Water – What Fills Your Cup?

There are a hundred things we turn to when we’re tired, discouraged, or chasing fulfillment—comfort, distraction, success, approval, sex, money, image, even ministry. But what happens when those things stop working? What if we’re pouring our hearts out into empty idols that were never meant to satisfy? In this raw and visual message, Duke shares the truth about modern-day idolatry—what it really is, how easily it sneaks into our lives, and how even in a Christian walk, we can end up chasing the wrong thing. Using a powerful object lesson with water, Duke walks through the difference between temporary relief and eternal fulfillment, and why only Jesus can truly fill the cup. You’ll hear about:The five categories of idols that steal your devotion and drain your soulWhy the enemy targets you even after salvation—and how idols are part of the attackThe subtle ways even good things like success or relationships can become dangerous substitutes for GodReal talk on pornography, people-pleasing, comparison, money, achievement, and self-worshipWhat Jesus meant when He told the woman at the well: “You’ll thirst again… unless you drink the living water I give.”Whether you're caught in striving, numbing out with your phone, chasing the next big goal, or just feeling empty—this episode is a call back to the only One who satisfies.Let this message stir you. If you’ve ever whispered, “I’m not enough… I keep failing… I feel too far gone,” this episode is for you. This week, we’re flipping the script—taking a raw look at five honest things we say to Jesus in our darkest moments… and how He responds to each one with unmatched grace, power, and love.We walk through Scripture that proves you’re not disqualified. You’re not too messy. You’re not forgotten. From Psalms to John, from the bleeding woman who reached for Jesus in a crowd to the shepherd who carried home his lost lamb—we see how Jesus doesn’t recoil from our weakness. He draws closer. He hears the faintest prayer. He carries us when we’re too weary to walk. He intercedes for us when we don’t even have the words. You’ll hear about:Why you’re not a disappointment, even when you’re strugglingWhat to remember when you feel spiritually silent or stuckWhy Jesus stops in His tracks at even the smallest act of faithThe truth about grace vs. striving—and how we were never meant to earn salvationHow Jesus cleanses us completely—even when we feel like giving upAnd at the end of the message, we do a live visual demonstration that shows the power of the cross in action. It’s simple, powerful, and unforgettable—don’t miss it.So if you’re crawling through the valley, feeling far from God, or wondering if He still hears you… come close. EP18: Gospel 101 – The Bridge, the Cross, and the Choice

This week, Duke breaks down the foundation of our faith — the Gospel. What is it? Why does it matter? In this powerful episode of the Iron Phoenix Podcast, Duke unpacks the spiritual reality of venom—not from snakes in the wild, but from the enemy of our souls.
