This week we reframed Hebrews 4:11, showing that “strive” doesn’t mean working harder, but being attentive and intentional so we don’t drift from the rest already ours in Christ. We also talked about why returning to rest or our awareness of union with God, can feel difficult. Our nervous system can default into threat mode, emotions may be surfacing, or we’re trying to “perform” rest. Through breath, grounding touch, and gentle awareness, we signal safety and allow the soul to soften. Rest isn’t something we earn; it’s something we remember. When we quiet ourselves like a child resting with its mother, we rediscover our true home in God’s love. Our One, Necessary Example: Jesus Lived the Life of a Son of Our Father - John 5:19-21 NASU: 19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. 20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel. Are we Flirting with a Transactional Mindset? “Am I trying to get God to do something without first asking, “What are You already doing?” “Do I feel pressure to get this prayer or ministry ‘just right’ so God can respond?” “Is my peace tied to whether this thing is going to ‘work’ or produce results?” “Do I think God is waiting for me to meet a condition before He’ll ‘do His thing?’” “Is this about something I want to control, or am I trusting the One I’m in union with?” This Isn’t a New Challenge... Isaiah 29:13-14 NASU: 13 Then the Lord said, “Because this people draw near with their words and honor Me with their lip service, but they remove their hearts far from Me, and their reverence for Me consists of tradition learned by rote, 14 Therefore behold, I will once again deal marvelously with this people, wondrously marvelous; and the wisdom of their wise men will perish, and the discernment of their discerning men will be concealed.” God didn’t quit working “marvelously” with His people. They just couldn’t recognize His work or Presence. Jesus Lived Relationally with Father: What Happens if We Live Transactionally? Key Points… Father told us to listen to His Son who He loved with the same love HE loves us (according to Jesus). Jesus lived and spoke and ministered in an intimate, relational, wholly dependent way with Father. He declared that as the Father sent Him, so He sends us. That is kind of a big deal. As the JOYLAND Community looks back and reflects on Easter, we contemplate and revelate: Using our place and timing to plug into the various stories of how those disciples, friends, followers, persecutors, and even enemies might have encountered the risen Jesus Himself—to most of their surprise—was undeniably alive again. * No one seemed to expect Him to come back to life. Should they have? * Some were quick to believe, but usually once He revealed Himself (even then some doubted…fear seemed to be involved). * Some you wouldn’t have expected to believe apparently did! Who were they? As it was that first few weeks following Jesus’ resurrection, it is not in doctrine that we are called to believe in—but a person—Jesus. Belief in doctrine DOES NOT make us Christians! The resurrection presents each of us with the invitation to believe in and know Jesus, who is alive today, right now in our lives. Jesus makes us living sons and daughters of His Father and Our Father, His God and Our God. A simple Look into one of the centerpieces of God’s goodness we can celebrate this weekend with Jesus on the cross. How can we interpret the events of the cross? First, explore what is recorded in scripture about the event(s) for us to read? Second, if available, let our interpretation be informed by any relevant teaching or prophetic scripture explaining or foretelling the event(s)… Third, recognize (and question if necessary) the influence that popular or common interpretations and theological explanations have on our beliefs… Finally, don’t fall into the trap of finalizing what you ‘believe’ without actually asking God! After all, He IS with us, He loves & speaks to us, and He was there!
