Lovesick Podcast: Let's Talk About Sex with Jocelyn Silva

From devout Catholic to spiritual and free I was raised in a Spanish speaking, conservative Catholic household in the San Fernando Valley,  Los Angeles, California. My mom is from El Salvador and my dad is from Mexico.  I attended Catholic school from Kindergarten to twelfth grade, was involved in my parish, and even wanted to be a nun at age 16. My religious beliefs significantly shaped my perception of myself and my sexuality.  I began to feel ashamed of my sexual desires and body to the point to where I was going to confession on a weekly basis to admit the "sinful" things my boyfriend and I were engaging in. It was a very confusing time that lead to a paralyzing depression and deep hate of myself.  As I entered college, and slowly left the church, my belief system shifted. The first time I had sex with a partner was at age 18 and when I tell you the skies parted and angels sang! Not necessarily because the sex was good (because the first time it rarely is), but because it was a beautiful connecting and freeing experience. I thought to myself, "How can this be a BAD thing?!" I was determined to learn everything I could about sex. I became a Sex Educator at age 21, facilitating workshops on college and university campuses. Then, earned my Bachelor's degree in Gender and Women Studies, ran a Sexual Health and Wellness boutique for 4 years, and went to grad school for my Master's Degree in Social Work.  I have been a sex educator for 13 years and now, for the past 4 years, I have been coaching women, men, and couples one on one and in group settings to support them on embodying the most authentic sexual expression of themselves.  Throughout the years and through a few challenging experiences, I have been able to develop a spiritual belief system that celebrates my sexual expression fully! This has been the driving force of what I do in my practice. Coaching and educating from a place of unconditional love for my clients and for humanity as a whole.  https://jocelynsilva.com @iamjocelynsilva

LOVESICK PODCAST: Living Your Best Life with an Autoimmune Disease in the Republic of Cyprus.

About Xenia: I went from high-achieving, thriving at my job, and living my best life to feeling like a complete failure in a matter of months. I was constantly tired and in pain, unable to think straight, work, or simply lead a normal life. I couldn’t keep up with my life anymore and felt like my bright vision for the future had popped like a bubble. Before my diagnosis, I assumed I was simply burnt out, but after countless hospital visits, blood draws, and tests I realised that all my symptoms were caused by something much bigger: my immune system was attacking my digestive system, leaving me with autoimmune hepatitis and Crohn’s disease. I wasn’t prepared to just accept that my life had forever changed. I was determined to do something about it. It took me years of trial and error to find out what worked and helped me get my life back. I spent a fortune on doctors' consultations, endless hours on research and reading, and wasted years trying different diets. Much of what I discovered was so rigid and defined that it didn’t meet my needs. I took the learning and created a bespoke plan for me; identifying my own unique requirements. The hardest part was doing it all on my own. My initial goal was to get my old life back, but I ended up gaining so much more. My diagnosis improved my life by teaching me where my true values lie, and I have been living symptom-free ever since. Now I help people like you take back control over their lives and finally start feeling like themselves again so they don’t have to do it alone. Together, we will create a solution specifically for you. #autoimmunedisease #wellness #cyprus #coaching #healthandwellness #healing #lovesickpodcast

The most important thing was becoming a self-help group leader. Currently, Dawnia is a self-help group facilitator for adults in their 20s-40s for the National MS Society. Seeing a need for a self-help group for teens, Dawnia spearheaded a self-help group for High School students and quickly spread to College Students called MS Youngsters that began in 2017. The MS Youngsters lovingly refer to her as their MS Mama. She also started a self-group for their parents/guardians. In 2020 Dawnia received the Inspirational Person of the Year Award for the Southern California/ Nevada Chapter of the NMSS. She also received the 2020 L.O.V.E. (Ladies Operating Very Effectively) Overcomer Award. Most recently she received the 2020 Volunteer Inspiration Award. Dawnia is a caregiver for her father who is also diagnosed with MS that is now bedridden. Since he lives in Pittsburgh she coordinates everything by phone, trips back to Pittsburgh to go to doctor's appointments with her dad, has relationships with every person involved in his care, and family that still lives in Pittsburgh. Currently, Dawnia is on the iConquerMS Caregivers Steering Committee member. True to her reputation, she maintained a positive outlook even after her diagnosis. Dawnia knows that God wasn’t bored one day and allowed her to be diagnosed with MS. She knows there is a purpose in every challenge and avoids asking "why me?". Dawnia's positivity can be attributed to her ability to see the bright side in every situation. She desires to show people another perspective when life presents seemingly insurmountable challenges. Dawnia is an example of what it means to make the necessary adjustments in order to continue living a fulfilling life. Dawnia is determined to not compare herself to others, but to focus on her blessings and who God designed her to be as she continues to live on the bright side!
