Sermon: On the Importance of Salvation
"He sent them into his vineyard." (Matt. xx. 2)Sermon for Septuagesima Sunday: On the Importance of Salvation"The vines of the Lord are our souls, which he has given us to cultivate by good works, that we may be one day admitted into eternal glory. "How," says Salvian, "does it happen that a Christian believes, and still does not fear the future?" Christians believe death, judgment, hell, and Paradise: but they live as if they believed them not as if these truths of faith were tables or the inventions of human genius. Many live as it they were never to die, or as if they had not to give God an account of their life as if there were neither hell nor a heaven. Perhaps they do not believe in them? They believe, but do not reflect on them; and thus they are lost. They take all possible care of worldly affairs, but attend not to the salvation of their souls."✅ For the full text transcript, visit: https://mannaofthesoul.blogspot.com/2023/02/sermon-on-importance-of-salvation.htmlPlease remember to pray for all who made these information available to you.Source:"Sermons for all the Sundays in the year" by St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, Bishop of St. Agatha and Founder of the Congregration of the Most Holy Redeemer. Sermon: Last Sentence of the Judge on the Criminal
"Many are called, but few chosen." (St. Matthew 20: 16.) Sermon for Septuagesima Sunday: "Last Sentence of the Judge on the Criminal" "Fearful words: The smaller number shall be called to the kingdom of heaven, and the greater number condemned to hell! If we blind mortals only thought of that while there is still time, that we might be inspired with a salutary fear, and so live that we may be found among the few elect! We have hitherto considered the state of the guilty sinner before the judgment-seat, and how he shall be summoned to judgment, questioned therein, accused, and convicted. There is still another and that a most terrible point to be considered, namely, how he shall be condemned by the sentence pronounced on him. "Then shall He say to them also that shall be on His left hand: Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire!" Ah, those words are enough to dry up the marrow of one’s bones! Depart from me, you cursed! Where to? Into everlasting fire! I shall speak to you to-day on the words of the first part of this sentence: "Depart from me, you cursed." ✅ For the full text transcript, visit: https://mannaofthesoul.blogspot.com/2023/02/ermon-last-sentence-of-judge-on-criminal.html Please remember to pray for all who made these information available to you. Sermon: Dangers to Eternal Salvation
"And when he entered into the boat, his disciples followed him ; and, behold, a great tempest arose in the sea." (Matt. viii. 23-24) Sermon for the Fourth Sunday After the Epiphany: Dangers to Eternal Salvation "The first means of salvation, then, is to recommend ourselves continually to God, that he may keep his hands over us, and preserve us from offending him. The next is, to cleanse the soul from all past sins by making a general confession. A general confession is a powerful help to a change of life. When the tempest is violent the burden of the vessel is diminished, and each person on board throws his goods into the sea in order to save his life. folly of sinners, who, in the midst of such great dangers of eternal perdition, instead of diminishing the burden of the vessel that is, instead of unburdening the soul of her sins load her with a greater weight. Instead of flying from the dangers of sin, they fearlessly continue to put themselves voluntarily into dangerous occasions; and, instead of having recourse to God’s mercy for the pardon of their offences, they offend Him still more, and compel Him to abandon, them." ✅ For the full text transcript, visit: https://mannaofthesoul.blogspot.com/2023/01/sermon-dangers-to-eternal-salvation.html Please remember to pray for all who made these information available to you. Sermon: The Examination of the Sinner in Judgment
"Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye." (St. John 2: 5) Sermon for the Fourth Sunday after Epiphany: "The Examination of the Sinner in Judgment" "In the judgment we shall be questioned about all we have thought during our lives. "The books were opened, and the dead were judged by those things which were written in the books, according to their works" (Apoc. 22: 12). All the secrets of men’s hearts and consciences shall then be displayed in a most vivid light. "Give an account of thy stewardship" (Luke 16: 2), shall be said to each one. Come here, oh, man! give an account of all that has occurred in your household during the time of your life. Account for the thoughts that were in your mind! Thought is free, we generally say; no worldly jurisdiction has any control over it, not even the Church herself, unless one reveals his thoughts to her. God has reserved this right to himself alone: "The Lord is the weigher of spirits" (Prov. 26: 2). What filth shall then come forth from the hearts of many who now show no mark of it on their foreheads!" ✅ For the full text transcript, visit: https://mannaofthesoul.blogspot.com/2023/01/sermon-examination-of-sinner-in-judgment.html Please remember to pray for all who made these information available to you. Sermon: On The Remorse Of The Damned
"But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into the exterior darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth" (Matt. viii. 12.) Sermon for the Third Sunday After the Epiphany: On The Remorse Of The Damned "In the Gospel of this day it is related that, “when Jesus Christ entered into Capharnaum, there came to him a centurion beseeching him” to cure his servant, who lay sick of the palsy. Jesus answered: “I will come and heal him.” “No,” replied the centurion, “I am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed.” (v. 8.) Seeing the centurion’s faith, the Redeemer instantly consoled him by restoring health to his servant; and, turning to his disciples, he said: “Many shall come from the east and the west, and shall sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of Heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into the exterior darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” By these words our Lord wished to signify, that many persons born in infidelity shall be saved, and enjoy the society of the saints, and that many who are born in the bosom of the Church shall be cast into Hell, where the worm of conscience, by its gnawing, shall make them weep bitterly for all eternity. Let us examine the remorses of conscience which, a damned Christian shall suffer in Hell." ✅ For the full text transcript, visit: https://mannaofthesoul.blogspot.com/2023/01/sermon-on-remorse-of-damned.html Please remember to pray for all who made these information available to you. Sermon: The Summoning of the Dead to Judgment
"And I say to you that many shall come from the east and the west." (Matt. 8:11) Sermon for the Third Sunday after Epiphany: "The Summoning of the Dead to Judgment" ""They will come from the east and the west, but what a vast difference there shall be between them! Some shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while others shall be cast into the exterior darkness. When shall this coming, this crisis take place? Sermon: The Glory and the Power of the Holy Name
"He humbled Himself, becoming obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross. For which cause God also hath exalted Him, and hath given Him a name which is above all names." (Phil. ii 8-9) "... there is a Name which is above all other names, a Name which we must always pronounce with the greatest reverence, with the most blissful happiness and the tenderest love; and that is the Name of Jesus. And why do we all cherish in our hearts so profound a respect, such love and devotion for this Most Holy Name? First: On account of its glory and excellence, and then (second) because of its wonderful power and abundance of grace. Let us make this the subject of our meditation in the Name of Jesus: "Who humbled Himself, becoming obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross. Wherefore God also hath exalted Him, and hath given Him a name which is above every name."" Sermon: Those Who Hear the Word of God without Fruit
"Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye." (St. John 2: 5) Sermon for the Second Sunday after Epiphany: "Those Who Hear the Word of God without Fruit" "Many hear the Word of God in sermons, but without fruit or profit; because the seed falls by the wayside. There are three causes which prevent the seed that falls by the wayside from bearing fruit. 1. The first is, because the wayside is an open public place, where the seed can easily he blown away by the wind; 2. The second, because the seed, not being covered with earth, cannot take root; 3. The third, because it is liable to be trodden under foot by the passers-by, or to be eaten by the birds." ✅ For the full text transcript, visit: https://mannaofthesoul.blogspot.com/2023/01/those-who-hear-word-of-God-without-fruit.html Please remember to pray for all who made these information available to you. Sermon: Malice of Mortal Sin
"Behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing." (Lk. ii. 48.) Sermon for the First Sunday after Epiphany: "Malice of Mortal Sin". "Most holy Mary lost her Son for three days: during that time she wept continually for having lost sight of Jesus, and did not cease to seek after him till she found him. How then does it happen that so many sinners not only lose sight of Jesus, but even lose his divine grace; and instead of weeping for so great a loss, sleep in peace, and make no effort to recover so great a blessing? This arises from their not feeling what it is to lose God by sin. Some say: I commit this sin, not to lose God, but to enjoy this pleasure, to possess the property of another, or to take revenge of an enemy. They who speak such language show that they do not understand the malice of mortal sin. What is mortal sin? 0:00 - Introduction 1:15 - First Point. It is a great contempt shown to God. 11:24 - Second Point. It is a great offence offered to God." ✅ For the full text transcript, visit: https://mannaofthesoul.blogspot.com/2023/01/sermon-malice-of-mortal-sin.html Please remember to pray for all who made these information available to you. Sermon: The Mission of the Word of God for Procrastinating Sinners
"They found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them and asking them questions." (St. Luke 2:46) Sermon for the First Sunday after Epiphany: "The Mission of the Word of God for Procrastinating Sinners" "As our Lord Jesus Christ, when he wished to show his unheard of love to men, could not wait for the time of his bitter Passion and death, to shed his Saving Blood for them, but already as an Infant, eight days old, poured out the first drops of that precious Blood in the Circumcision, so, he would not wait for the time of his public mission to instruct and convert men, but commenced his office of Preacher in the twelfth year of his age, when he was found amongst the doctors in the temple, explaining the law to them by question and answer. Ah! If we had only the happiness of once hearing, as they did, the word of life from his own sacred lips, what an effect would it not have on our hearts! But what am I saying? Although it is now nearly two thousand years since he appeared in the world in visible form, he still preaches his divine word and explains his law by the mouths of priests. Alas! I should rather exclaim, would that all Christians were diligent enough in hearing his word. Then, indeed, would Christ reap a golden harvest. 0:00 - Introduction 2:07 - I. On the Number of the Saved
Part 4, Chapter 4: On the Number of the Saved "Let me ask thee, O reader, what proportion thinkest thou of all who live upon this earth will be saved? Half? or a third part? or perhaps a quarter? Alas, I fear, and not without good reason, that the number will not be nearly so large. Jesus Christ, Who is eternal Truth, His holy Apostles, and the Fathers of the Church, all tell us that so it will be. What does Christ say about the number of the elect? His words are these: "Many are called, but few are chosen." He repeats these words when He speaks of the guest who had not on a wedding garment: "Bind his hands and his feet, and cast him into the exterior darkness. For many are called, but few chosen."" The saints are truly wise. "But, notwithstanding the greatness of his own misery, the unhappy sinner, reflecting only on the enjoyment of present goods, calls the saints fools, because they seek to live in poverty, in humiliation, and self-denial. But a day will come when sinners shall see their errors, and shall say. “We fools esteemed their life madness, and their end without honour.” (Wis. v. 4.) Sermon: On the Happy End of our Years
"When the fullness of the time was come." (Gal. 4: 4) Sermon for the Sunday after Christmas: "On the Happy End of our Years" "These words have been used and will be used of all men as long as the world lasts. Thus with the child the fullness of time may come in two or three years; that is the end of its years. The fullness of time for the youth or maiden may be in ten or twenty years, for the man or woman in thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty years; then comes the end of their years. The same words shall one day be used of us too; but we cannot say how many years must elapse till then. Happy shall we be if the end of our years is a happy one. And that is what I wish myself, you, and every one from my heart at the end of this year. Namely, I do not wish in the common mode of expression, a happy end of the present year and beginning of the next, but I wish for you and myself" 0:00 - Introduction 1:50 - A happy end of our years; the object of this wish is a happy death. 3:16 - At the end we must leave all things. 6:04 - The just man will leave all things with joy at his happy death. 9:23 - That it can and should be realized by every one, and how that is to be done. Exortation to the married people, parents, fathers and mothers to work for a happy death. 12:06 - Exortation to young men and women. 13:33 - Exortation to widows and orphans, desolate, sorrowful, and afflicted Christians 14:45 - Exortation to the sinners. ✅ For the full text transcript, visit: https://mannaofthesoul.blogspot.com/2022/12/sermon-on-happy-end-of-our-years.html.html Please remember to pray for all who made these information available to you. On the Joys of Heaven (Continued)
Part 4, Chapter 3: On the Joys of Heaven (Continued). " regard to the spiritual joys of the redeemed in Heaven, they are in such great abundance, that in speaking of them one does not know where to begin or where to end. Think of the spiritual consolations granted to eminent servants of God in this world. We know concerning some Saints that their life on earth was more that of Angels than of men, so frequently were they favoured with ecstasies, visions, interior lights, and Divine consolations of all kinds. On the Joys of Heaven
Part 4, Chapter 2: On the Joys of Heaven. "Now that we have meditated upon the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of God, we will proceed to consider the happiness which the Saints who dwell therein enjoy, both in regard to body and soul. It is true as yet they have not their bodies, as a general rule, but at the Last Day they will all have them again, and those bodies will then be so beauteous, that nothing in the world can compare with them. And this will principally be because every member will be endowed with four qualities or attributes, namely: beauty, impassibility, agility, and subtlety. By reason of its beauty or glory the body of each one of the elect will shine like a star, yet, as one star differs from another in glory, so the Saints will shine with greater or less splendour, according as their lives upon earth have been more or less holy." On the Nature of Heaven
Part 4, Chapter 1: On the Nature of Heaven "We must not, as some do, picture to ourselves Heaven as a purely spiritual realm. For Heaven is a definite place, where not only God is, and the Angels now are, but where Christ is also in His sacred humanity, and Our Lady with her human body. There, too, all the blessed will dwell with their glorified bodies after the Last Judgment. If Heaven is a definite locality, it must accordingly be a visible, not a spiritual kingdom ; for a place must in its nature be to some extent conformable to those who abide in it." On Eternity
Part 3, Chapter 8: On Eternity "The torments of Hell are all so horrible, so appalling, that they are enough to make the bravest man tremble. Sermon for The Nativity of Our Lord: God With Us
"And his name shall be called Emmanuel." (Is. vii. 14.) " The Saviour is born for us, a Saviour who will deliver us from sin, and from the thraldom of Satan, who reconciles us to God and opens heaven unto us. What this Saviour is His name tells us, that the prophet Isaias announced: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and His name shall be called Emmanuel, God with us." Yes, God with us, that is the meaning of the joyful message of the angel: God with us in His humanity, in His childhood, in His poverty. This is what we will contemplate, dearly beloved; His name shall be called Emmanuel, God with us." The Worm that Dieth Not
Part 3, Chapter 7: The Worm that Dieth Not "Our Divine Saviour says: "If thy hand scandalize thee, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter into life, maimed, than, having two hands, to go into Hell, into the fire that cannot be quenched, where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not extinguished. And if thy foot scandalize thee, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter lame into life, than, having two feet, to be cast into the Hell of unquenchable fire, where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not extinguished. And if thy eye scandalize thee, pluck it out; it is better for thee with one eye to enter the kingdom of God, than, having two eyes, to be cast into the Hell of fire, where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not extinguished" (Mark ix. 42-47)." On the Loss of the Beatific Vision of God
Part 3, Chapter 6: On the Loss of the Beatific Vision of God "And then such an eager desire will take possession of our soul to gaze upon and enjoy this supreme Good, that she will be irresistibly drawn to God, and will long with all her powers to contemplate His ineffable beauty. And if on account of her sins she is deprived of this beatific vision, it will cause her the most intense anguish. No grief, no torture known in this world can be in any wise likened to it. St. Bonaventure bears witness to this, when he says: "The most terrible penalty of the damned is being shut out forever from the blissful and joyous contemplation of the Blessed Trinity." Again, St. John Chrysostom says: "I know many persons only fear Hell because of its pains, but I assert that the loss of the celestial glory is a source of more bitter pain than all the torments of Hell."" On the Company of Hell
Part 3, Chapter 5: On the Company of Hell "There are many bold sinners who, when they are punished for their crimes and threatened with Hell-fire are wont audaciously to answer: "Wherever I go, I shall at any rate not lack company," as if the presence of others could afford any solace to them, or any alleviation of their torment. In order that these shameless sinners may see how wrong they are to speak thus, and how little cause they have to anticipate any relief from the company in which they will find themselves, this chapter shall be devoted to showing them how woeful that company will be, and how it will aggravate their misery." Some other Torments of Hell
Part 3, Chapter 4: Some other Torments of Hell "Christ speaks to us of the darkness of Hell in these solemn words: "Bind his hands and feet and cast him into the exterior darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth" (Matt. xxii. 13). Our Lord speaks of the darkness of Hell as exterior darkness, the most appalling, the most fearful that can be. A traveller who has lost his way in a forest and is benighted, feels a nameless terror coming over him. Now there is a land which is covered with the shadow of death, where no order, but an eternal horror reigns. That land is Hell. An oppressive gloom weighs upon the lost; an indescribably terrible darkness prevails." Please remember to pray for all who made these information available to you. On the Vile Odors of Hell
Part 3, Chapter 3: On the Vile Odors of Hell "In order that nothing may be wanting to the plagues of Hell, wherewith the lost souls are tormented, God has in His anger decreed that this horrible prison should be pervaded by an abominable stench, as a punishment for those who, when on earth, have taken excessive delight in the use of choice perfumes. The prophecy of Isaias will thus be fulfilled: "Instead of a sweet smell there shall be a stench" (Is. iii. 24). Decaying animal matter emits so horrible an odour that no one likes to go near it. But if we imagine not one tainted carcass, but hundreds of thousands heaped together, the air for miles round would be so infected that it would cause the death of all in the vicinity." Sermon: Penance
"Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of penance." (St. Luke iii. 8.) "This, my brethren, was the sermon which the holy Precursor of the Redeemer preached to all those who sought him in the wilderness, to learn what they should do to attain eternal life. Bring forth, said he, real fruits of penance, that your sins may be forgiven you, that is to say, whoever has sinned, has no other remedy but penance, even for those who obtained forgiveness in the sacrament of penance, there is still a punishment due, which must be atoned for, either in this world, by suffering, and all the other tribulations of this life, or in the flames of purgatory. This, my brethren, is the difference between the Sacrament of Baptism, and that of Penance; in the Sacrament of Baptism, God forgives us without requiring anything from us; on the other hand in the Sacrament of Penance, God remits our sins, and gives us grace on the condition that we undergo a temporary punishment either in this life, or in the flames of purgatory; so that man shall be punished for his contempt and abuse of grace. When God wills that we should do penance, so that our sins may be forgiven us, He demands it only to preserve us from relapsing into sin, so that by remembering what we have had to endure for our sins which we have confessed, we shall not dare to return to them again." Sermon for the Fourth Sunday of Advent: Penance 0:00 - Introduction. *1. We are not exempt from the obligation of doing penance even when our sins are forgiven. 2:35 - Conditions of receiving worthily. 6:18 - We must make satisfaction to God. 7:19 - Examples: Adam, King David, St. Peter, St. Magdalene, Penances of the early Church. *2. We must perform the penance imposed upon us by our confessor 11:40 - How penance must be done. 15:18 - The various ways of doing penance. ✅ For the full text transcript, visit: https://mannaofthesoul.blogspot.com/2022/12/Sermon-Ars-penance.html Please remember to pray for all who made these information (meditations, sermons, audio) available to you. Sermon: On the Love of Jesus Christ
"And all flesh shall see the salvation of God." (Luke iii. 6.) Sermon for the Fourth Sunday of Advent: On the Love of Jesus Christ. "The Saviour of the world, whom, according to the prediction of the prophet Isaias, men were one day to see on this Earth "and all flesh shall see the salvation of God," has already come. We have not only seen him conversing among men, but we have also seen him suffering and dying for the love of us. Let us, then, this morning consider the love which we owe to Jesus Christ at least through gratitude for the love which he bears to us. In the first point we shall consider the greatness of the love which Jesus Christ has shown to us; and in the second we shall see the greatness of our obligations to love him." 0:00 - Introduction 0:59 - First Point. On the Hunger and Thirst Suffered in Hell
Part 3, Chapter 2: On the Hunger and Thirst Suffered in Hell "Just as the crimes whereby the sinner in this life provokes the anger of God are of various kinds, so the pains of Hell whereby those crimes will be punished also vary in their nature. We know that men often sin through intemperance, greedily indulging themselves in food and drink. Consequently God has appointed a severe penalty for this sin in the next world. Christ foretells it, indeed, in the words: "Woe to you that are filled, for you shall hunger" (Luke vi. 25)" Please remember to pray for all who made these information available to you. On the Fire of Hell
Part 3, Chapter 1: On the Fire of Hell "Although in the present day many are found to deny the existence of Hell, or, at any rate, the eternity of punishment, we do not consider it incumbent upon us to bring forward a number of proofs that there is such a place as Hell. In the case of the Christian reader, for whom this book is intended, evidence of this nature is quite superfluous, because he will not have made shipwreck of his faith. Indeed, what further proofs can be required for the existence of Hell and the eternity of punishment, seeing that the prophets, that Christ Himself, that the apostles, and the Fathers of the Church, nay, the very Turks and heathens, speak of it as an unquestioned fact. Those who deny the existence of Hell must consequently be counted amongst the fools who say in their heart that there is no God who punishes their misdeeds." On the Publication of the Sentence Passed upon the Good and the Bad
Part 2, Chapter 11: On the Publication of the Sentence Passed upon the Good and the Bad "Understand these things, you that forget God; lest He snatch you away and there be none to deliver you" (Ps. xlix. 22). Yes, understand this, O unhappy sinners, and see to it that a like doom does not overtake you. Think how you would feel, were you amongst the number of these reprobates. Consider what you would then wish that you had done, and what you would give as the price of your ransom, were it possible for you to be liberated. Well, then, do now what you would then wish to have done. Confess and bewail your grievous sins whilst there is yet time, and pray God to preserve you from never-ending tormen" Please remember to pray for all who made these information available to you. On the Length of Time that the Final Judgment will Last
Part 2, Chapter 10: On the Length of Time that the Final Judgment will Last "How long will the duration of the Last Judgment be? No definite answer can be given to this question, for it is a matter which no one knows; yet it may be conjectured that it will occupy a considerable period. Some indeed say that it will be over quickly, because God could judge all mankind in a single instant. Yet this opinion does not seem to be held by the Fathers of the Church, nor is it supported by Holy Scripture, in which we find a day of judgment invariably spoken of." Sermon: On the Means Necessary for Salvation
"Now when John had heard of the wonderful works of Christ," (Matt. ix. 2.) Sermon for the Third Sunday of Advent: "On the Means Necessary for Salvation" by St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori "All would wish to be saved and to enjoy the glory of Paradise; but to gain Heaven, it is necessary to walk in the straight road that leads to eternal bliss. This road is the observance of the divine commands. Hence, in his preaching, the Baptist exclaimed: "Make straight the way of the Lord." In order to be able to walk always in the way of the Lord, without turning to the right or to the left, it is necessary to adopt the proper means." 0:00 - Introduction 0:57 - First Means. On the Reason why Christ's Appearance on the Day of Final Judgment will be Terrible and on the Heinousness of Mortal Sin
Part 2, Chapter 8: On the Reason why Christ's Appearance on the Day of Final Judgment will be Terrible and on the Heinousness of Mortal Sin "The reader may, perchance, be inclined to ask the reason why Christ, the same Christ who lived amongst us on earth in all gentleness and meekness, should wear so terrible an aspect when He comes to be our Judge? There are a great many reasons why Christ in this capacity should judge mankind with such awful severity. The principal one is because He has been most grievously outraged by the sins of men." On the Manner in which Christ will take His Place on the Judgment-seat
Part 2, Chapter 7: On the Manner in which Christ will take His Place on the Judgment-seat "When Christ, in His chariot of fire, has reached Mount Olivet, He will pause in the air, at such a height that He can be clearly seen by all men, until the Angels have prepared the throne of judgment. The prophet Daniel thus portrays the scene: "I beheld till thrones were placed, and the Ancient of days sat; His garment was white as snow and the hair of His head like clean wool; His throne like flames of fire, the wheels of it like a burning fire. A swift stream of fire issued forth from before Him; thousands of thousands ministered to Him, and ten times a hundred thousand stood before Him: the judgment sat and the books were opened" (Dan. vii. 9, 10)." The sixteenth precept, on the Sacrament of Extreme Unction
Chapter 16: The sixteenth precept, on the Sacrament of Extreme Unction "There now remains the last sacrament to speak of, Extreme Unction; from this may be derived most useful lessons, not only for our last hour, but for the whole course of our life For in this Sacrament are anointed all those parts of the body in which the five senses reside, and in the anointing of each of them it is said: "May our Lord forgive thee whatever thou mayest have committed by thy sight, hearing, &c" Hence we see, that these senses are as it were five gates, through which all kinds of sin can enter into the soul. If then we care fully guard these gates, we shall easily avoid a multitude of sins, and therefore shall be enabled to live well and die well." The Fifteenth precept, on Matrimony
Chapter 15: The Fifteenth precept, on Matrimony "The sacrament of Matrimony comes next : it has a two-fold institution ; one, as it is a civil contract by the natural law; another, as it is a sacrament by the law of the Gospel. Of both institutions we shall briefly speak, not absolutely, but only as regards teaching us how to live well, that so we may die well. Its first institution was made by God in paradise ; for these words of God, "It is not good for man to be alone," cannot properly be understood, unless they have relation to some means of propagating the human race." Sermon: On the Advantages of Tribulations
"Now when John had heard of the wonderful works of Christ," (Matt. ix. 2.) Sermon 2, Second Sunday Of Advent: On The Advantages of Tribulations "In tribulations God enriches his beloved souls with the greatest graces. Behold, St. John in his chains comes to the knowledge of the works of Jesus Christ: "When John had heard in prison the works of Christ." Great indeed are the advantages of tribulations. The Lord sends them to us, not because he wishes our misfortune, but because he desires our welfare. Hence, when they come upon us we must embrace them with thanksgiving, and must not only resign ourselves to the divine will, but must also rejoice that God treats us as he treated his Son Jesus Christ, whose life, upon this earth was always full of tribulation." 0:00 - Introduction. 1:08 - First Point. Sermon: Judge as God
"Then they shall see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with great power and majesty" (Luke 21: 27.) Terrible shall be the coming of the incarnate Son of God on that Day of Judgment! Signs shall be seen in the sun, moon, and stars; the swollen sea shall fill all hearts with dread by its roaring and rushing waves; men shall wither away with fear! But all that should not frighten us. These things are mere forerunners of the general fear that is to follow. "Then they shall see the Son of man coming with great power and majesty;" that is the sole cause of the dismay that must fill our minds. With reason does the Church sing: How men shall shudder at the coming of the Judge! And who is that Judge? He will be an exceedingly terrible Judge, especially to those who have a bad conscience. 0:00 - Introduction. 2:42 - Christ our future Judge, is an Almighty God. 3:24 - He will show to the world His justice, hitherto unknown. 5:47 - He shall one day appear as a lion. 7:38 - He is an all-knowing God, from whom nothing can remaing hidden. 10:06 - We must lead pious lives. Second Part 11:10 - In this life God shows His mercy, but hereafter they shall experience only His Justice 12:43 - The divine honor requieres that. 14:12 - An also His mercy. 15:19 - Like David we have reason to fear this Judge. 16:25 - And holy Job. 18:06 - Conclusion. ✅ For the full text transcript, visit: https://mannaofthesoul.blogspot.com/2022/12/sermon-judge-as-God.html Please remember to pray for all who made these information available to you. On the Appearance of Christ's Cross in the Heavens
Part 2, Chapter 5: On the Appearance of Christ's Cross in the Heavens "When all mankind are assembled in the valley of Josaphat, the prediction of Our Lord will be fulfilled: "Men withering away for fear, and expectation of what shall come upon the whole earth." For they will be in such anxiety and terror in anticipation of the approaching judgment that, if such a thing were possible, they would faint away. They will look up to the heavens continually with fear and trembling, and every moment that the coming of the dreaded Judge is delayed will serve to increase their apprehension of this advent. At length the heavens will be opened, and the sign of Christ's triumphant victory, the sign of the Holy Cross, will be carried down by a host of angels and exhibited to the whole world." On the Sacrament of Penance
Chapter 13: On the Sacrament of Penance "The sacrament ot Penance comes next, which consists of three conditions relating to him that receives this sacrament contrition of heart, confession, and satisfaction. They who properly comply with these three things, without doubt obtain the pardon of their sins. But we must attentively consider what is meant by true contrition, sincere confession, and full satisiaction." The Passion of Jesus
Prayer: Chapter 12.8: The Passion of Jesus "According to St. Francis de Sales, Mount Calvary is the true school of sacred love. There faithful souls come to draw from the wounds of the Lion of Juda the honey of charity. And, in fact, what is more capable of inspiring us with the love of the Man-God? When I am told that He is infinitely perfect and infinitely lovable in Himself, I believe it, but my belief does not so speak to my heart, as does the sight of Jesus crucified, a sight which is a tangible proof of the Saviour’s excessive love for me, and of my obligation to love Him in return. How wonderful it is, indeed, that, almighty and in finite as He is, He has so abased Himself as to become man, and assume the appearance of a sinner, and to take upon Himself our sins and the punishment they deserve! And then should I, after all this, fail to love Him!" Please remember to pray for all who made these information (meditations, sermons, audio) available to you. On the Manner in which the Good and the Wicked will be Conducted to the Place of Judgment
Part 2, Chapter 3: On the Manner in which the Good and the Wicked will be Conducted to the Place of Judgment "We will now consider in what manner we shall be assembled for the final judgment. If the good and the evil are found together in the graveyards and elsewhere, that will come to pass which Our Lord predicted: "So shall it be at the end of the world: the Angels shall go out, and shall separate the wicked from among the just" (Matt. xiii. 49). For since the good are laid to rest amongst the wicked, it follows that at the resurrection they will be found amongst the wicked. Accordingly, after the General Resurrection the holy Angels will come and separate the elect from the reprobate. St. Paul, speaking of this, says: "For the Lord Himself shall come down from Heaven with commandment, and with the voice of an archAngel and with the trumpet of God; and the dead who are in Christ shall rise first. Then we who are alive who are left, shall be taken up together with them in the clouds to meet Christ into the air" (i Thess. iv. 15, 16). All the good, that is to say, will be carried on the cloud with splendour and great glory by the Angels to the place of judgment." The Foot of the Cross
Prayer: Chapter 12.7: The Foot of the Cross "When we place ourselves in spirit on Calvary near the Cross, what do we see thereon? The Son of God dying for the love of us and, not withstanding His anguish and excessive pains, continuing to pray for us. This is truly a touching sight, a sight fully capable of captivating our minds and hearts and of inducing us to pray with attention and fervor. Do not, indeed, the torments, privations and insults undergone by our Saviour excite our compassion, gratitude and repentance, all of which are so favorable to true devotion?"
