Send us Fan MailWe rethink pain from the ground up with Monica Noy, separating nociception from pain and showing how sloppy language and seductive stories distort care. We examine multiple modes of nociceptive activation, challenge “root cause” thinking, and push for ethical, precise explanations that validate lived experience.• nociception as necessary for pain, not equivalent to pain• immune, neuroinflammatory, cellular, and prolonged stress pathways activating nociception• the nail-in-the-boot anecdote clarified and deconflated• risks of guru narratives and circular brain-first explanations• the pitfalls of “root cause” and regional interdependence• pain-driven movement changes versus movement as cause• clinical descriptors as mechanisms of nociception, not pain types• social determinants as context, not convenient causal levers• semantics as shared meaning that improves assessment and carePlease subscribe so you can be the first to listen to new episodesIf you enjoyed this episode, share to your favorite social media platformsPain Education No Script Provided is a self-directed course which is now available for purchase on my website, the CEBE.comIf you'd like to financially support my podcast, please consider making a small donation by clicking on the support button or visiting buymeacoffee.com/helloobThe Massage Science Podcast and my company, The Centre for Evidence-Based Education (The CEBE), are now official partners with Noterro.Partnering with them feels like a natural alignment with our mission to support busy clinicians.Get Noterro free for 44 days!Noterro makes clinic management easy with scheduling, billing, and charting all in one placeSupport the showHead on over to my website. Send us Fan MailWe examine the IASP definition of pain, why shared language matters, and how sloppy semantics derail research and care. We contrast barriers to recovery with causes, clarify differences between nociceptors and nociception, and use sensitization and nociplastic as hypotheses that guide better reasoning.• using the IASP definition to ground assessment• distinguishing nociceptors, neurons, and nociception• reframing biopsychosocial as barriers to recovery• identifying sensitization without overpathologizing• applying nociceptive, nociplastic, neuropathic as hypotheses• avoiding conflations like “pain signals” in clinic and AI• aligning treatment dosing to irritability and mechanismPlease subscribe on your favorite podcast network. Pain Education, No Script Provided with Monica Noy, ep 1. Knowledge Gaps and Ethics
Send us Fan MailWhat if pain education got the fundamentals wrong by chasing tidy scripts instead of solid mechanisms? We sit down with researcher and educator Monica Noy to rethink how clinicians learn, reason, and communicate about pain. Rather than leaning on “explain pain” narratives and one-size-fits-all language, Monica anchors care in a clear premise: nociception is necessary—though not always sufficient—for pain. That single shift reframes assessment, reduces blame, and helps us speak to people with honesty and respect.Across a candid, story-rich conversation, we explore why pain care remains under-taught across health professions despite being the top reason people seek MSK help. Monica traces the evolution of common teaching approaches, the biases that shaped them, and the real-world fallout when clinicians over-educate, over-promise, or quietly fault patients for not “thinking right.” We talk ethics, too: if pain is associated with actual or potential tissue damage, what does it mean to create pain during treatment? When does intensity cross into harm, and how do we decide with patients rather than for them? You’ll hear a grounded way to use the biopsychosocial lens without turning it into a moving target that justifies endless chasing. We discuss definitions, semantics, and why shared language matters; how better mechanism literacy leads to fewer words and better questions; and what Monica’s new course, Pain Education, No Script Provided, offers clinicians who want to be less wrong and more helpful. Expect fewer scripts, more clarity, and a renewed respect for autonomy—yours and your patients’.Enjoyed the conversation? The Knowledge Summit Series Part 2: Dual Relationships in Massage Therapy with Sarah MacAulay
Send us Fan MailSarah MacAulay, an RMT from Stewiacke, Nova Scotia, brings a fresh perspective on dual relationships in massage therapy, challenging the profession's traditional ethical guidelines that don't reflect rural practice realities. Living in a town of approximately 1,800 people, Sarah shares her journey of navigating professional relationships that inevitably overlap with personal ones, revealing how urban-centric ethics create unnecessary burdens for rural practitioners.• Dual relationships occur when professional therapeutic relationships overlap with personal connections• Traditional ethics teaching instructs therapists to "avoid dual relationships" without providing context for rural practitioners• The abstinence approach to dual relationships is unrealistic in small communities where practitioners know most patients• Research from other healthcare professions shows risks of dual relationships are often overstated• Patients in small communities often prefer being treated by someone they know and trust• The burden of reconciling practice reality with traditional ethics creates unnecessary guilt for rural practitioners• Successful management of dual relationships involves honesty, communication, and co-created boundaries• Current ethical frameworks derived from urban institutional settings don't translate to rural practice• Practitioners need education on managing dual relationships rather than simply being told to avoid them• Sarah is developing guidelines to support therapists navigating dual relationships in small communitiesJoin Sarah at the upcoming Knowledge Summit on Sunday, October 5th, where she'll present "A Closer Look at Dual Relationships in Research and Practice" – offering research-informed approaches for practitioners working in small communities. The Massage Science Podcast and my company, The Centre for Evidence-Based Education (The CEBE), are now official partners with Noterro.Partnering with them feels like a natural alignment with our mission to support busy clinicians.Get Noterro free for 44 days!Noterro makes clinic management easy with scheduling, billing, and charting all in one placeSupport the showHead on over to my website. Palliative and Hospice Massage in a Death Avoidant Culture with Ashley Brzezicki
Send us Fan MailIn this episode I have a great conversation with Ashley Brzezicki, an RMT and death doula, whose personal narrative and cultural insights bridge the gap between massage therapy and end-of-life care. Exploring this tender intersection, we shine a light on the human touch in healthcare—a touch that offers solace to those grappling with terminal illnesses and envelops their loved ones in the warm embrace of empathy and understanding. Ashley's tapestry of narratives threads through our conversation, from confronting the cultural discomfort around death to the art of finding meaning amidst life's final chapter. We delve into the vital role of hospice care, a misunderstood haven offering more than just comfort in dying—it's about living each moment to the fullest, with dignity. Our discourse challenges the medical community's preoccupation with cure over care, advocating for a holistic approach where every healthcare provider, from the massage therapist to the hospice nurse, becomes a guide in the patient's odyssey of self-discovery and acceptance. This episode calls out some of the noticeable absences in healthcare education, and we advocate for massage therapy to become a university-level degree. We dissect the ethical implications of outdated teachings and the significance of evidence-based practice, as well as the challenges practitioners face in the evolving landscape of Continuing Education. Our exchange extends beyond academia to the essence of patient-centered care, weighing the merits of various modalities against the need for genuine relief. Join us, as we unfurl the importance of compassionate healthcare and the enduring impact of a simple human touch in the profound journey of life's sunset. As a recent master's graduate and an RMT from Courtenay, BC, Nadine brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the discussion. Nadine details her journey from body worker to registered massage therapist, unveiling the pivotal role that advanced education plays in bridging the gap between theory and practice. The Future of Massage Therapy: The Shift to Evidence-Based Practice
Send us Fan MailMassage therapy in BC is changing with the recent announcement of a new practice standard for RMTs, evidence-based practice. With the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia (CMTBC) charting a bold new direction, I discuss how the adoption of this new standard come January 2024 could transform the professional landscape for therapists. With an enhanced focus on patient-centered care and focusing on the use of relevant research evidence, this should allow for a staunch rejection of pseudoscientific approaches that have lingered in the field for far too long. Join me, as we explore the commitment to integrating research, patient perspectives, and therapists' expertise, reshaping the definition of what practice competence could look like in our industry. With the EBP new standards, this signals a departure from the old guard, mandating a clinical practice underpinned by robust research and continuous professional development. I share insights on the essential role of up-to-date research in shaping treatment plans that truly benefit the patient, not the bottom line. This episode highlights the surge of accountability as therapists are now expected to perpetually sharpen their knowledge and skills with a deep dive into evidence-based educational resources. In a candid reflection, I recount my journey as an educator and the lessons I have learned from moving beyond outdated practice narratives. As we wrap up, I extend a warm invitation to all listeners to join the conversation on evidence-based practice, with a commitment to nurturing a community where professionals can confidently implement these progressive approaches. .The Massage Science Podcast and my company, The Centre for Evidence-Based Education (The CEBE), are now official partners with Noterro.Partnering with them feels like a natural alignment with our mission to support busy clinicians.Get Noterro free for 44 days!Noterro makes clinic management easy with scheduling, billing, and charting all in one placeSupport the showHead on over to my website. The Student RMT Experience with Courtney Olmstead
Send us Fan MailThis is the second episode in my series on new RMTs. Today we have Courtney, who is an RMT in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We had a great conversation about the need to adapt RMT entry to practice curriculum to make it consistent with current evidence and how the industry and more importantly the public would benefit from a shift in thinking from fixing people to providing more meaningful support and management. At the time of this recording she was just finishing her studies in RMT school. Courtney started to develop a sense of skepticism during her entry to practice education so she started to search for information outside of her school environment. This led her in a search for updated knowledge which was challenging everything she was learning in school. When presenting this new information to her instructors she was frustrated because she was encouraged to not ask questions and to simply accept the knowledge that she was being presented with.Courtney’s experience is not unique as it demonstrates some of the common problems our profession has with its entry to practice curriculum. We share a few suggestions of a better way forward which we hope the stakeholders will adopt. Some wise words to take away from this episode, the more I learn the more I realize I need to knowTo learn more about my virtual learning community, the Manual and Movement Therapist’s Community (MMTC) please visit here;https://ericpurves.lpages.co/mmtc-sales-page-1You can sign up free for your first month using the discount code, mmtcfree.Connect with [email protected]: @ericpurvesrmtIG: @eric_purves_rmtSubscribe to my email list. Send us Fan MailIn this episode Walt tells us about his clinical and educational experiences and how he made the transition from being heavily invested as an MFR focused therapist into being an evidence-based clinician. We discuss the importance of finding an acceptable balance in our understanding, our communication and how we teach continuing education. Our treatment interventions aren’t always just about one tissue or a special technique, they are more complex than that and the outcomes people experience are more strongly related to the strength of the therapeutic relationship. The willingness to embrace shared decision making is the core premise of what he wants learners to take away from his courses.Research articles:(Geri, 2019) Manual Therapy: Exploiting the Role of Human Touch(Bialosky, 2017). Mythbusting with Lauren McLaughlin
Send us Fan MailThis is an episode of my mythbusting series featuring Lauren McLaughlin, an RMT in Fredericton NB.Lauren and I discussed her journey into scepticism and how she is trying to bring more awareness into popular unhelpful myths such as "no pain no gain."When Lauren began her practice she quickly realized that the knowledge and techniques she learned in school were not working the way she was taught. This confusion and frustration motivated her to start searching for more answers because she wanted a more accurate understanding to better inform what she was experiencing with clients. She emphasizes the importance of trauma informed care how she started using Instagram as a tool to communicate with her clients but also as a way to communicate more helpful messages to the RMT population. If you would like to get in touch with Lauren, she can be contacted through her IG account under the name groundedmassagetherapy.Connect with Eric:www.ericpurves.comhttps://ericpurves.lpages.co/podcastFB: @ericpurvesrmtIG: @eric_purves_rmtThe Massage Science Podcast and my company, The Centre for Evidence-Based Education (The CEBE), are now official partners with Noterro.Partnering with them feels like a natural alignment with our mission to support busy clinicians.Get Noterro free for 44 days!Noterro makes clinic management easy with scheduling, billing, and charting all in one placeSupport the showHead on over to my website. Mythbusting with Julie Ringuette
Send us Fan MailIn this episode I have a conversation with Julie Ringuette, an RMT in Winnipeg Manitoba. Julie is a new RMT who quickly realized that much of the content she learned in school was not supported by current science. She has been using Instagram to challenge many of these unhelpful beliefs, but more importantly she is also providing constructive alternatives.Julie and I discuss some of the concerns she has about the current school curriculum, the need for a curriculum update, person centred care, adapting our manual therapy narratives for the good of the public and how she uses Instagram as a creative outlet to spread knowledge to both the RMT profession and the public.Julie’s #1 take home message. Try to make people feel like they are NOT broken and be very careful with your language.Connect with Eric:www.ericpurves.comhttps://ericpurves.lpages.co/podcastFB: @ericpurvesrmtIG: @eric_purves_rmtThe Massage Science Podcast and my company, The Centre for Evidence-Based Education (The CEBE), are now official partners with Noterro.Partnering with them feels like a natural alignment with our mission to support busy clinicians.Get Noterro free for 44 days!Noterro makes clinic management easy with scheduling, billing, and charting all in one placeSupport the showHead on over to my website. Welcome to the Purves Versus Podcast
Send us Fan MailWelcome to my new podcast, Purves Versus! This short episode outlines why I have a podcast and the objectives I hope it will help achieve. In future episodes we will discuss topics specific to our industry while exploring current trends, and evidence based content. I will be doing this through a series of solo episodes, but also I will be interviewing therapists from across the world. Some of our topics will include the value of mythbusting and I have interviews with those who use social media and other platforms to bust those myths. The new RMT experience, how did this prepare them for the real world of clinical practice, CEC providers, the educational experience going to school in an unregulated province, we will also explore modality empires and the role of professional associations and how they influence the profession and its various stakeholders. Thanks for listening! Please connect with me.www.ericpurves.comEmail: [email protected] to my mailing list and get notified of new episodeshttps://ericpurves.lpages.co/podcastMy socials:FB: @ericpurvesrmtIG: @eric_purves_rmtTwitter: @ericpurves1Support the showHead on over to my website.
